Al's Grill moving to Capone's building

Al's Grill and Catering is moving into the old Capone's Restaurant building (previously Fire Island, previously Highway Host).

I've never eaten at Al's Grill, but I get the impression that it should be a much better fit for the building than Capone's was. Whoever thought that this building was a good location for one of the most expensive restaurants in town should have their head examined. "Located on scenic Gateway Drive across from the beautiful, aromatic Simplot factory!"

This stretch of Gateway will soon be home to two new restaurants: Al's and the Northside Cafe (which is going into the old Westward Ho building). By the way, isn't it kind of odd for a restaurant called "Al's" to be going into a building previously occupied by a restaurant called "Capone's"? That's bizarre!

Al's is wonderful. Especially their caribbean chicken wrap and chicken wild rice soup.

I think its great that he is moving into a larger location and closer to me for lunch. mmmmm Als BFO. In the past one would have to get ther eearly to go to lunch and then when it would get full people would then have to stamer for a second choice for lunch. I thought what a bummer for his business but then again he was doing well by keeping it full, but who doesnt want to accomidate as many as he can at peak times.

I've never eaten at Al's, but this sounds like a good fit for that location, and I'll bet they get a lot of Simplot's lunch crowd (all shifts).

Post some more menu items and price range, please.

Al's has great food! I'm sure they'll have more room over there but it's going to be a less convenient location for me. They are actually my current favorite place in town for delicious food at a great price.

Mmm Al's tips and toast can't be beat. I'll be visiting early and often. Glad to see he is experiancing success.

Al was the head cook at Southgate for years so if you like anything off of that menu, you can find it at Al's (but better because it's done by the master). Red potatoes in cream sauce, tips & toast, walleye, the burgers, onion rings and soups! Can't stop without mentioning his chili... Anytime you want to get a great homestyle meal at a great price (it's very affordable), go to Al's. He is well known for his catering also. I hope this will be a great move for Al and request he extend his hours a little with the move - he currently closes a little early for me.

What's up? anon posters can post again?

Evidently.

Unrelated, but would love an open thread or topic on GF property taxes. With the valuation letters being delivered, some people out there are sure to have an opinion!

Question: Where is the current Al's Grill and Catering? I hadn't ever heard of them before. But then I'm only up in GFK a few weeks a year.

It's currently in the little strip mall at 13th and Washington Street, same building as Mexican Village.

On a side note, that strip mall on Washington is supposed to be getting some rather extensive exterior remodeling this summer.

It looks like the strip mall has a new "rock" facade. Perhaps that's all there is to the remodel?

I LOVE Al's grill. Get there early for lunch or you won't find a spot. That's how good it is. I will miss the cozy setting, but wish Al and the crew success in their new location.
