Anyone know if Olive Garden in Fargo is serving tomatos?

Unfortunately the Olive Garden is still not serving tomatoes. I drove down to Fargo yesterday and did not eat there because of this.

Where can I find swamp coolers here in town?

You don't see many swamp coolers usedin this region because they not nearly as effective as they are in the SW and others places that lack humidity.

anyone still have any pictures of/at the westward ho?? my dad worked there for like 15 yrs. but lost all memorbelia in the flood. I though a few old pics of the joint might be a funny gift. remember the Palace before it was a sports bar, the Palace dining room i think...the chuck house tokens, the boot shaped pool, the round green couch and the player piano. that place was an icon. id love to see any pics of the westward ho. thx

Regarding The Westward Ho, eBay usually always has some great historic post cards for auction. Also, ash trays and glassware. It's true, the Westward Ho was a phenominal local landmark. I'm also very sad to see it go. The lobby alone on a Saturday night was the best show in town!

What was the Westward Ho?

Also, does anyone know if the University of North Dakota Medical School, or lawyer school are any good?

I stayed at the Westward Ho, and I recall they had antique phones on the wall.

Widespread price fixing in gasoline sales! Widespread collusion among local gas retailers, result in criminal charges against 11 companies and 13 people . Over $2 million in fines ! This was in weekend GF Herald "The Canadian Report ". Could actions that happened in Quebec, Canada happen in GF ? Keep your gas receipts and lets sue them ! greenglass4

Anonymous said...

I was in Fargo last Thursday, and gas was 20 cents a gallon cheaper than here in Grand Forks on the same day.

Anonymous said...

Gas in California is almost 5 bucks for a gallon of super unleaded. Grand Forks is next. I am going to buy a bicycle and in the winter I will ride a dog sled to work. I must first get good dogs though. Does anyone know where I could buy like 30 purebred Chuwawa's, the real thoroughbred type. I figure they are small and fast and I wont have to feed them very much. Does any one have any experience with Reindeer? Do they make good sled-dogs? What about high schoolers? Has anyone ever heard of High school kids pulling a sled. I would be willing to pay like 1 dollar per mile. My daily commiute is like 3 miles round trip. Has anyone ever tride to make a rocket propeeldd snow shoes?

The should fast track those plans for the GF Monorail!

Aww... 'The Ho' is gone?!?! I had so many memories of that place... When I was a kid my aunt worked there so we would get a free room on the weekends once in a while, the boot shaped pool ROCKED! I went to supper at the Palace for prom my junior year (if WAS a fancy place at the time). Saw Martin Zellar there for the first time many many moons ago, his "Born Under" CD cover was a picture of him at The Ho.

Also, does anyone know if the University of North Dakota Medical School, or lawyer school are any good?

The Med School is better than the Law school, but my opinion is based on friends that have went to both (one nurse, one lawyer). They both have good facilities - I would suggest going to Boston for law as my cousin did (much better school). If tuition is an issue, then go to UofM for law.

How about other affordable protable AC units besides the hardware stores?

Check craigslist or another website for a good deal. They're everywhere. You might want to try a pawn shop as well - there are a few spread throughout GF.

There's also a website in Fargo called "Freebee", which is a free listing service for people wanting to get rid of things (for free). You probably don't live in fargo, but I would suggest taking a look anyway. You'd be surprised at what's on there (I saw a 52" TV once - the guy was "moving" - maybe to jail, heh)

Anyone know if Olive Garden in Fargo is serving tomatoes?

As far as I know, they will be serving them again within the week. The only reason they stopped was precautionary, and they were probably okay to begin with, but just precaution.

anyone still have any pictures of/at the westward ho?? my dad worked there for like 15 yrs. but lost all memorbelia in the flood. I'm sure someone reading this blog can dredge up some pictures for you.

As for the last time I was there, it seemed slightly run down. Of course I was at a rock show, so I didn't see much of the building, but I remember going in there a few times that summer and being unimpressed.

But of course, good pictures tell all, and someone has to have good pictures. Try Google Earth as well.

I understand that outof staters can buy fireworks in ND sooner the NDers. Is this just urban legend? If not, is there some reason for this law?

Anonymous said...

Fireworks should be illegal because they are dangerous and irresponsible people buy them and end up starting fires, blowing their hands off, or hurting other people.

Anonymous said...

It's been a while since I bought any (I have a number of fireworks aficionado friends from Minneapolis that invite my family to their annual display north of Grand Forks,)

You, and your family, are invited again this year. I'll be up on the 30th and will probably talk to you more after that...

but I always liked Generous Jerry's on South Washington (Highway 81, really.)

That's been our first stop the past couple of years getting fireworks. Have walked out of there with the money spenders happy with what they got.

Fireworks should be illegal because they are dangerous and irresponsible people buy them and end up starting fires, blowing their hands off, or hurting other people.

So, those of us who know what we're doing with fireworks should give up our fun because of a few people who can't handle them? Why should my right, or my friend's rights, depend on the actions of idiots?

1. This chapter does not prohibit:

b. The sale of any kind of fireworks for shipment directly out of the state.

I think they have to provide ID saying they are from out of state and
may have other paperwork.

It doesnt matter if there is an exception in the NDCC if you live in a state where fireworks are illegal, such as California.

gjb:
There is no "right" to buy fireworks. The State of North Dakota can pass legislation at any time banning fireworks, which they should do because of the irresponsible individuals who mainly use them. There is no need to buy fireworks when you can just enjoy a professionaly operated fireworks show on the 4th of July.

Matt BK said...

Considering how few people I hear about dying every year from fireworks, I doubt this is pressing legislation to pass.

Considering also how many of the yearly injuries or deaths are probably directly connected to the use of alcohol or other mind-altering substances, and that most of those people probably hurt themselves rather than others, my opinion is to let natural selection take its course and eliminate those form the gene pool who are just too dumb to be safe about things.

I hope my 4 year old doesn't blow her hand off with her box of snaps.

It should be illegal for those without common sense to use fireworks. The people who get hurt are usually one's who are irresponsible and reckless, or let their kids use fireworks that they are too young for.

Anonymous said...

Why should we watch that video? Because Jenny McCarthy thinks there is a link between vaccines and autism? People are so quick to point the finger at external causes because they are afraid to admit that their kid could have autism without outside influence.

There has been study after study done on this subject, and there has yet to be any proof of a vaccine-autism link. Just because autism symptoms often appear around the same time as MMR vaccines doesn't mean they are related.

By the way, my own kid is on the autism spectrum.

That's too funny!!!! LOL

There's a of crap being spread around here without any links to provide some evidence

How about some numbers, how many are vaccinated and how many of those have reactions.

How many vaccinations have prevented even more problems than those supposedly caused by them?

Since when is the world supposed to be perfect and something must be blamed for every situation?

Anonymous said...

The only reason the small number of you parents can run around without vaccinating your children is because 99.9% of us ARE acting responsibly and vaccinating our children to avoid widespread activity of diseases.

If you want to take up a "natural parenting" cause, then pick on something that actually makes sense not something that has saved countless numbers of children worldwide, or perhaps you'd like to go back to the days where a large % of the children died due to preventable illnesses????

So many of you "natural parenting" people drive me nuts because you get on your soap box about vaccines, giving children OTC meds, chemicals in their shampoo, etc. Yet, I see you feeding your children hotdogs, soda, dyed foods, watching tv, etc. Gimme a break! Obesity is the worst threat of all for your children, not to mention the recent scientifically proven link between high consumption of dyed foods and hyperactivity ...

... so, why don't you take the hotdog and multi-colored goldfish crackers away from your child and actually go get them immunized to save their life.

Ahhh, since Eve ate the apple. Where've you been?

I presume the above was directed at C.Y.'s last question.

1983- 10 vaccines given in first four years of life. Autism 1 in every 10,000

2008- 36 vaccines given. Autism 1 in every 150. 1 in every 94 boys.

6000% increase. My guess is that autism is coming from the genetics of all the parents who don't have autsim. Whose family never had a person with autism. It is for sure not the vaccines. What the hell ever!!!!!!!

Antifreeze
Formaldehyde
Aluminum
Mercury

The reason autism rates are increasing so much is because of several factors:

1. Acceptance of using a "label" nowadays. The increased rates of autism were probably always there, but we just knew those children as different or slow or not like us.

2. Parents are much more likely to seek out help for their children nowadays.

3. The diagnostic label of "autism" is necessary to pay for many special services and extra help for the child.

4. Over diagnosis by doctors and therapists, not just on the autism spectrum but on many different disorders (i.e.adhd).

5. Children spend more time than ever in daycare centers, school programs, etc and are not at home with mom most of the time, so these children are exposed to many more caregivers and thus the symptoms are much more likely to be noticed, diagnosed, and tended to.

Shall I go on???? There are many many things that have changed in the past 20-25 years in the mental health world, the medical world, our home environments, etc. that have led to increased diagnoses. My best guess is what you are seeing in these "increased rates" are an increase in identification and treatment of a spectrum of disorders that has been there all along.

Thank you,
A Family Therapist

Anonymous said...

Who are you? What do you really know about this subject? What the CDC considers safe for mercury is what the EPA considers UNSAFE for standard tap drinking water! For get about monkey brain for a moment- lets discuss ANTIFREEZE. What other product in the United States intended for human indestion contains antifreeze?? Other than vaccacines, of course.

If the senate deems it neccesary for a federal investagation on steroid use in MLB, why wont they investagate a 6000% increase in autism?

If it takes $500,000 to make these kids indistinguishable from their peers at the level of kindergarten, But takes 3 to 5 million to take care of them for a lifetime if we don't do anything. Then we all can expect health insurance to keep climbing to unreal levels. They won't pay for autism but they will pay to institutionalize these people. THink about it?????????????????????

Anonymous said...

I watched the video and I honor that family for sticking up for what they believe in. All this negative crap needs to stop and be happy that this family loves their son so much and take a posative proactive approach to make him better. Interesting conversation. A Family Therapist makes great points. The methodology of diagnosis has changed enormously in the last 20 years. Comparing autism rates today with those from 1983 is not a valid approach.

Anonymous said...

DALE

HAVE FUN READING THE SIMPSONWOOD MEMOS! " the link is undeniable"

Why is being institutionalized different then general autism. BOTH cost millions a year to treat.

The majority of which is paid for by state medicaid, does everyone enjoy paying a lot of taxes?!

"If we take the mercury and rat dung or whatever out and 10% of the people who take the vaccine die from the disease anyway, is that a good trade off?"

How do we know that taking it out will raise death 10% in those people. I think its a very valid reason to study it but no one will.

Let me remind you that most of these people especially at the Green our Vaccines Rally are not anti-vaccine. They are anti toxin. So why are you all assuming that they won't give any vaccines.

Anonymous said...

You can't tell me in 1983 that when your kid stood in a corner spinnig wheels on toys, went years without talking and had severe sometimes self injuring behaviors that you would be afraid of putting a label on it. Or even be afraid to have your child seen by a doctor.

Anonymous said...

Autism is a cluster of symptoms linked together on a whole spectrum ... where we are seeing huge increases in diagnosis is on the lower end of the spectrum, this does drive the overall rate of the disease up considerably. I am not referring to the children who suffer from severe forms of autism, they probably have always been diagnosed as such.

ATTENTION DALE AND THIS GUY:

before you post a link you should read and understand what your preachin. There are 11 shots that contain thimerosal. And there is an article on antifreeze as well.

So Dale, why didnt you look at the CDC web site? or the simpsonwood memos. Your pretty hush hush on that arent ya?

"thimerosal has been removed from or reduced to trace amounts in all vaccines routinely recommended for children 6 years of age and younger, with the exception of the inactivated influenza vaccine."

Do you remember when smoking was good for you? Believe what you want. I guess its just to much to ask to clean up our vaccines.

I still think the video was great and applaud that family for what they did.

Okay, "lets discuss ANTIFREEZE."

This is used all the time as a talking point by people that can't tell the difference between Propylene glycol and Ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is poison. Propylene glycol is found in too many common daily used products to list here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol

I actually use propylene glycol to mix with ivermectin to get the proper dose to control heartworm in my dogs. I buy it at the local compounding pharmacy. You can lick it off you fingers without danger, not that I would choose to do so.

At the same time I am very cautious to keep any "anti-freeze" off the ground as dogs will lick it up like sugar and it can kill them.

Supposedly there is one molecule difference between margarine and some plastics. I guess that one molecule is pretty important and I don't see any hysterics to ban margarine.

Martin Zellar of the Gear Daddies put out a solo album several years ago and the photos for the album were shot at the Ho. He must've had a soft spot for the place since the GD's played there so often.

Visit the Tuel Shed (now known as The Shed) to see actual memorabilia from the Ho. There are a few items on the walls.

Not sure where to get other stuff from the Ho. It was quite the entertainment spot back in the day.

Most of the Ho's equipment and decor went in a public auction a few years ago.

I ended up with the circular couch from the lobby. It sat in my house for about a year, and I sold it off before moving. The damn thing was too big to move with me.

I think one of the partners at Curt D Johnson Auction Co. ended up with the totems and other woodworks from the Chuck House and I think he got the bar from the Speakeasy as well.

Incidentally, I had to bid on Nine and Numb's property that we left at the Comedy Gallery a few days before the place closed in order to get it back. That sucked.

Whoever, thanks for the memories. I saw some of my heroes there and then met up with them for breakfast the next morning in The Chuckhouse. The place was beyond amazing.

"Kelly, Bremer Bank seized your shit. No one else. Get a clue."

Um...ok. I wasn't pointing any fingers here, just saying how having to bid on my own property because of someone else's problem sucked.

I'm not going to get into a never-ending pissing match over the Ho all over again. You're anonymous, which makes you instantly not worth the argument.

Plus, the Ho is LONG dead. Nobody cares anymore. Try looking forward for a change.

Greetings... I was doing some research on your area and ran across your site. My wife and I are traveling from Wisconsin to Winnipeg soon and we thought it would be fun to try to find out what off-the-beaten-path or can't-miss stops local folks recommend in different places along the way.

We have a blog started at http://08-road-trip.blogspot.com/ - if you've got a good word for something in your backyard, let us know... Thanks in advance!
