"Beyond the Blogosphere"

Television ads have started airing on WDAZ for reporter Jessica Dugan's upcoming series "Beyond the Blogosphere" about the local blogging community. The two part series will air this Thursday (February 1) during the 6 PM and 10 PM newscasts.

Jessica wanted to have me on the series, but I told her I was too shy/fond of being anonymous to go on camera. She then offered to put me in the shadows and distort my voice, but I still had to decline. Can you imagine me going on television and having my face and voice obscured? That would be really creepy!

Why didn't I want to go on? Like I said, for one thing I'm too shy to go on the news. I can't bear the thought of tens of thousands of people watching me and listening to what I have to say...It would just kind of "freak me out" I guess. Still, that's not the only reason. Being an anonymous blogger is kind of my gimmick or shtick. No one knows who I really am, so I don't have to worry about my blogging life getting in the way of my real life or vice versa. I have found that you will actually get more leads and tips if people don't know that they're talking to someone who is going to blab everything they know on a blog. I'm just too fond of being the "deep throat" of Grand Forks to give that up.

I'm looking forward to Jessica's series...and the surge in blog visitors I hope it brings with it. You better be nice to us, Jessica!

Grand Forks Life: the best of the local blogs, with frequent updates and insight to the goings on in the area.

As much as I'd like to know you, and know how you manage to get the scoop on so many developments, I'm sitting back and smiling with the realization that you'll remain anonymous. It adds to the enjoyment of reading this doggoned blog a couple of times a day!

I hope you never tire of the contribution.

I wish I'd started my blog anonymously pretty much every day.

Going on camera my jeopardize the scoops you provide the readers everyday.

Hopefully the news series will bring more readers and tips to the blogs.

Huh, she didn't ask me if I wanted to help with her story, and I've been one of the more outspoken bloggers. In fact, I even got a member of the "Capone's" family to call me a "d-bag" for suggesting that their restaurant was a terrible concept, and would fail within a year (I was right).

How many other bloggers can say that they had open warfare of words with such prominent (and unarmed) opponent?

And how many truly useful restaurant reviews have we seen in the blogosphere or the newspaper?

I guess I need to blog more. :)

I appreciate the blogs. GFG, and jgs, are the most prominant. But...I would hope that you guys will someday discover the high road and be more critical of Grand Forks, and stop the self congratulatory masturbation. The "I broke the story" crap is so bad. Can't you just do it, and not point it out? It is such a childish sign. Judging by the ego-motivated posts in the past, I'm sure it was very difficult for you two to pass on appearing on TV.

Yeah! How dare you guys post whatever you want on your personal blogs!

Anon said that he/she appreciates the blogs. You know, lets get real, the kids took 20 minutes to set up a blog template; now, they cry out for recognition for their work.

I agree with the anon above, it takes away from their effort to turn around and ask for credit.

Those are two very different things lumped into one request: 1)bashing Grand Forks 2)not advertising myself or this blog in anyway.

As far as the first one, dream on. I love Grand Forks and I want to see it grow and prosper. I call them as I see them. I am often critical of choices the city government or a business makes. If you read my blog for any period of time, you will find that I don't paint just a rosy picture of the community. Still, I refuse to devolve into the "I hate Grand Forks" or "There's nothing to do in Grand Forks" vein so many decide to travel down.

As far as the second item, I personally don't feel that I congratulate or promote myself all that often. Still, why shouldn't I? This is my own personal blog. And how many times have you seen the Herald or WDAZ bragging about themselves or saying "You heard it here first"? It's part of the game.

I think the measure of a blog's value is the information it contains, not the design.

On the other hand, there's this:

"I have found that you will actually get more leads and tips if people don't know that they're talking to someone who is going to blab everything they know on a blog."

I'm sure, GFG, you didn't mean for it to sound as if it's a betrayal of trust, or something like that. But I think you should weigh carefully the context in which you receive your information. It's OK if we're talking about a piece of info that's widely known within an industry but it's questionable if the info is of a more confidential nature, even if it were not absolutely top secret.

Tu-Uyen, thanks for pointing out the errors of my words. You're right...I really didn't mean what that probably sounded like. In all reality, most of my "tips" come as emails from readers of this blog and emails from other people within the community. Those stories that I don't get email tips on, I stumble across by myself. So no...I don't betray anyone's trust on here. If I knew something was truly confidential, I wouldn't put it on the blog. What I said in my post just sounded really bad. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify that.

Strangely quiet in this blog the last while; c'mon, folks...are you really afraid Channel 8 is watching YOU? :o)

This afternoon I heard a small snippet of Dakota's radio show and guess what she was talking about...our local blogs. So much media coverage lately! Thanks for the shout out, Dakota! You should advertise us all more often.

A snippet of any talk radio is enough...:o)

On a similar thought, anyone know of a radio station that actually plays music different from the norm?

Thinking about the cold weather approaching; couldn't help but notice the wooden Indian outside The Big Sioux on I-29 South. His arms are folded across his chest, like he's freezing as he stands in the northern crosswind.

90.7 is the shizzle. If you don't agree, you have to take a long, hard look at yourself. :-0

Seriously, it's an amzing resource for little-old Grand Forks. Maybe even the coolest goin' for this sleepy town.

Anon: I too love 90.7, it's my favorite station in town.

Anyone try 90.1...especially on Sunday afternoons?
