Open Thread #49

I apologize for neglecting this blog over the last few days. It's been a very busy and stressful week for me. For now, here's a new open thread to tide you over.

Does anybody else think there are to many subway restaurants?? I was counting lastnight and I counted 8, and I am not sure if the one at UND has opened back up. which would make 9.

Does anyone know who was killed on Saturday night and the name of the perpetrator??

Anonymous said...

I do know who was killed Saturday night at the Broken Drum. His name is Joel Loveland (sp?). My condolences to his family, his daughter, and his fiance, whom I am acquainted with. This cannot be an easy time for them. From what I understand, they do not know who the perpetrator is at this time.

No Subway on campus, in the Union or the Fulton/Johnstone residence hall, anymore. The Union does have Dakota Deli, which is essentially the same as Subway.

Anyone want to take a guess at the quid pro quo extortion, er, I mean, monetary settlement, His Horse Is Thunder will demand from UND for use of the Sioux nickname?

Comments like that oughta help.

And people wonder why it's such a tense situation. Sheesh.

Neither side is willing to back down nor merely compromise, lest they lose face. It stands to reason that negativity will follow. Is it possible to rise above that?

Anonymous said...

"Is it possible to rise above that?"

You can. But you have to start with the premise that both sides are just altruistic champions of the Native Americans.

The stoplight by Perkins/USBank/Altru... 13th and Columbia I believe...really sucks, It seems like it stays green longer for people traveling on 13th Avenue while it constantly backs up Columbia. It's even worse at night... there won't be anyone waiting on 13th and then it will turn red and you have to sit there for an unnecessarily long time.

Anonymous said...

I wish they could find a way to mark lanes on streets that can be seen when it rains when the streetlights are on. I've seen people get confused at some of our stop light intersections when it's wet after dark since the lanes can't be seen very well.

What a tragedy at The Broken Drum. The owners and management aren't talking to Police. What the hell is up with that?

Anonymous said...

They are keeping their mouth shut for legal reasons. I am sure they are cooperating with the police, but they cannot say anything to the public. Their words can be used against them in a court of law.

Anonymous said...

who are those people on the wash/demers street corner every weekend?

Unknown said...

The people on Washington/DeMers are Ron Paul supporters. I love how their signs say "honk if you hate taxes," and every person who honks while driving by is driving on a road paid for by... wait for it... taxes.

Also, I'm so tired of hearing people suggest that the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes just want a pay-off of some sort. Only nickname supporters bring money up as a potential solution, as if racism can be bought or respect can be garnered if X% of proceeds go to the tribes. The fact that it's even being suggested is proof that the name needs to be changed, and I hope the tribes stand firm on that.

I applaud the blogger who posted a message about the stoplights. The stoplights in Grand Forks are horrendous. I am not sure who is the traffic engineer in this city, but that department has been neglecting lane painting, the deteriorating condition of Columbia Road, and the stop light timing.

I am very sorry if I frighten anyone next to me when I am screaming at the traffic signal! I and many others I have talked to are frustrated with signals that give one side a green arrow to make a left-hand turn when no one is waiting to make that turn (i.e. intersection by Buffalo Wild Wings on Columbia)! There are also intersections that turn red when no one is waiting from that direction. I think everyone can agree the traffic does not flow well at all in Grand Forks and it would be nice if everyone would voice their concerns to the city. I emailed them in the spring when virtually all roads had no painting on them and the Canadian tourists were frequently making turns in the wrong lane...of course no reply from the city on that email.

Anonymous said...

There's a particularly nasty spot on Columbia right by the turn to go to in between Borrowed Bucks and the FedEx/Kinko's plaza... Southbound on the far right lane there's a huge pothole... didn't notice it until I was about to drill it...thankfully my car didn't sustain damage, but that needs to get fixed. quick.

Did Big Tom bump his head?

Anonymous said...

Too Tall Tom is going to KXMB CBS 12 in Bismarck, and KXMB's meteorologist Hutch Johnson is coming to KVLY NBC 11 in Fargo, where Tom got fired from.

Anonymous said...

There are a few roads (such as leaving Happy Harry's onto 32nd), where there are 3 lanes going one way, and 1 lane going the other. When the paint is faded, you can easily turn into the wrong lane. Nice planning City!

Ralph E and his family/foundation has 95% of the issue solved. Do you think Ralph was able to work with the Mafia, Mob, and Labor Unions to build 1,000's of houses, NASCAR Race Track, several Casinos and not to be able to work with the tribes of North Dakota. It is a done deal. No name change or logo, rest assured my friend. Now onto The Death at The Broken Drum: 4 clowns dressed up in Halloween costumes may have killed Joel L. Hard for police to find 4 clowns, need a stool pigeon. Be mighty careful , may be a very rough crowd. greenglass4.

4th Ave S and Belmont goes down as an idiotic stop light. I'm frequently waiting there for long periods of time while there is no traffic coming from the other direction. Are there even sensors that detect vehicles at this stop light?

Still Fighting It said...

I think the light at 4th & Belmont is run by timer only, same as most lights downtown. That's the case in most "dowmtowns" I've been to.

Anonymous said...

I think that one guy was saying Paul wants to get rid of fed. income tax and thats probably what they meant by their "honk if u hate taxes" sign

Amy said...

Our downtown lights are ridiculous. Hit one red light.... then green and go... for one block. Hit one red light... then green and go... Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. If I remember right, the city's planning on "fixing" the timing of these in the near future, but in the meantime, I'm resisting the urge to pull my hair out.

the owners and employees of the Drum are absolutely cooperating with the police investigation...the lack of cooperation is coming from the people on the pary bus where the suspects likely went. The ownership has provided video and other things asked for by police...they just haven't talked to the media, which is a good thing. The owners were out of town on a vacation the night of the assault. The bar did everything to cooperate on Sat. and has continued to.

Good to see I am not the only one who gets goofed up by the delay and hits enter twice.

Rumor has it the dog park is finished and open for business. Anybody tried it out yet?

Anonymous said...

The dog park fence is up and there's a sign at the gate that says "under construction, enter at your own risk". It appears construction is done, though. We let our dog roam around the new park on Sunday. There's also a doggie height water fountain inside, but it's not running yet. A nice little touch.

Anonymous said...

where is the doggie park at?

I'm very disappointed that nobody has had the courage to turn in the perps of the "Broken Drum" Murder. I'm sure others witness this autrocity. They need to do the right thing and turn them in.
As for the UND name. UND is such a great school with so much to offer, but lately they've spent way too much time and energy trying to preserve the Fighting Sioux history, tradition and identity. When the tribes obviously could care less.
It's unfortunate, but it's time to move on. UND needs to get to more pressing matters like the move to DI and continued improvement in all academic areas.
By the way, any more news on tom Buning. Seems to me he was ganged up and didn't stand a chance.

"I'm very disappointed that nobody has had the courage to turn in the perps of the "Broken Drum" Murder."

I think it's despicable...if it hasn't happened yet. Reminds me of drug- and galn-related crimes, where even family of victims won't cooperate because they're afraid of retribution.

That settlement was not very good.
Horrible is the word that comes to mind.

I was a Valley Junior High Warrior.

I was a Central High Redskin.

I was a UND Fighting Sioux.

Personally, I HATE Indian nicknames because they are BORING!! BORING, BORING, BORING!!!

I would much rather see the school change it's name because the mascot IS nothing special. Central got it right when they changed to the Knights -- majestic, charasmatic, exciting!

UND will come up with something much better I will be happy.

Anonymous said...

That is so funny ! bloggers are concerned about the seconds it takes for traffic lights to turn; when there is news about a murder, trial of Moe Gibbs, and UND Sioux name. Very ironic I must say ! Or lets discuss the Report on high taxes in GF. greenglass4.

Tammy Osbourne calls president 'mister'.

Below is an email I send to her. How can this get to air? Why did she call him 'mister'?

Tammy,

In your piece about Ed Schaffer on tonights news, you spoke of 'mister' Bush. The last time I looked, he was our
president. Being in the news, you should put your political affiliation aside, and report the news. Maybe it was just a slip, I don't know, but I hope you are not trying to emulate Keith Olberman.

Jeff

GrandForksGuy said...

Are you joking, Jeff? Since when did "Mister" become a disrespectful thing to call a man? I seriously doubt that Tami (you don't even know how to spell her name...) meant ANYTHING one way or the other by calling him "Mister" Bush. Bush is lucky to have anyone refer to him with something as respectful as "Mister." Just be glad she didn't call him what he actually deserves to be called. Please...get a life.

Anonymous said...

I suppose you call your father 'mister'. And when talking to your mother, you call her 'mrs'. No? Why not?

Then you rip on me for misspelling Tamis name? I didn't mean ANYTHING one way or the other by misspelling her name.

Please...get a life.

Guess we know you are voting for Hillary. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Is it disrespectful to call someone mister? My four year old son refers to everyone by Mister "Joe" or Miss "Melissa" Im confused...

Anonymous said...

It's a petty little game played by the predominately left-leaning media. Call a Republican President "Mr" and then fawn all over a former Democrat President and call them "President".

Anonymous said...

I did apologize to Tami. I was way off base there. I had a bad month.
I should have never compared her to Olberman.
Also after researching the "rules", I found out that it is normal to call him president at the first mention in a news story, and then after that call him "the president" or "mister bush".
That is what she did. She is right, and I am wrong.

Anonymous said...

anon:

It is disrespectful to call someone 'mister' if they have a title that is 'higher' than that.

I don't know if I am explainging it good enough, but that is what I think.

Anonymous said...

Ah I understand now Jeff

The fact that you would get so worked up over that enough to write a letter to WDAZ is troubling.

hahahaha okay buddy...yeah i must've gotten "worked up" over tom szymanski, which HAD to be what compelled me to choose this moniker.

(sarcasm if you couldn't tell)

Sorry if I hit a note, Mr. Jeff.

A nice day to you as well.

I bought a iFrogz Luxe case when I purchased my iPhone. It is a pretty nice case, but I wanted to know if there is something better out there. Since the iPhone is a really expensive phone with no insurance, I want to make sure I get a case that provides excellent all-around protection, while not damaging the phone itself (like the screen/back of phone).
