I am glad the GF County Fair is now back at the fairgrounds, but a county with a population this size should have a nicer fairgrounds. TRF, and even Fertile have nicer fairgrounds than GF. It would be great if the county would step up with a plan to improve the fairgrounds with landscaping and some more buildings for animals and exhibits.

We walked around last night, lots of mud ! Races cancelled and small midway. Kinda boring night. News item in todays paper : EERC Director Gerry Groenewold charged in County Court for Disorderly Conduct with confrontation with Manvel Firefighters "get my shotgun" . Next court date August 2, 2007. And free food at Sanders Cafe on Sunday and free music 3 to 9 pm. greenglass4.

Free food if Kim Holmes gave you a ticket. It sounds like a nice event but to block off the street for a private party, considering Sanders received a $250,000 grant-not a loan- from flood monies it would be nice to throw a party for more than his regular customers. I like the place but it still seems he got a big gift when most of us had to rebuild on our own.

I won't touch the issue of a grant of loan because I have no knowledge of that. I will say that anyone can make a request to block off a street for any type of party. All you have to to is make a request to city hall and as long as they have no great problem with it and you're not requesting to block off a major street like Demers or Washington St it will get approved.

Anonymous #3, You make it sound like Kim Holmes is some ungrateful jerk who is out to screw people.

I'm sure it wasn't like:

Good Ol' Boy Network: "On behalf of the city, I would like to present you with this suitcase filled with 250,000 non-denominational $1 bills as a token of our appriciation for you just bein' YOU, you magnificant bastard!"

Kim Holmes: "Thanks, Good Ol' Boy Network! And as a token of MY appriciation, in a decade, I will hold a private party that only my friends can come to. I want to have free food and music, and I want to have it outside so I can make all the other flood-stricken people of this community feel jealous of my personal connection to the cartel that runs this city from the shadows."

Good Ol' Boy Network: (Laughing menacingly)"THAT will show them!! HA HA HA!! Can I have some chicken?"

Kim Holmes: "Sure, do you have a Golden Ticket?"

Cut the guy a break, his business is vital to downtown, and he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Kelly...
We did cut him a break-$250,000!!
His business is an important part of downtown-I still feel he could have paid back a loan with a low interest rate. I wouldn't go anywhere soon either if I had the city covering my back in a disaster. I don't think he is "an ungrateful jerk..." but I still think it should have been a loan. My opinion.

I sometimes block off my street and just sit in the middle of the road in my underpants....

Kim got a cookie. There are many, many others that got bigger cookies.

Well I got a grant from the Wynn Consulting Group, not anything like $250,000 Kimmy got, nor the $330,000 that a certain TV Store received to stay downtown and rehab building, you might notice TV Store is now in a new building on 32nd Ave ! As any business downtown knows, Wynn Consulting screened the applicants for free money, and when 10 or more grants were given to the city council, they were automatically approved. Maybe more loans should have been taken out instead of outright grants. Think about it. greenglass4.

OMFG - If you think GFK doesn't have a Good 'Ol Boys club... bury your head in the sand more. It's the reason why you probably, more or less, make the standard < $10/hr job in GFK. Oooh, you might even be one of the privileged ones and snob down at others because you are in the 40-50K salary range.

Got news for you, if you are not a small business owner you probably are not making a decent living -- Aside from the obvious Dr, lawyer,e tc. Albeit, there are plenty of lawyers and PhD's stock shelves at Target. Kudos Asshat.

If Kim got a cookie-the rest of us didn't even get crumbs. While business owners, especially downtown merchants needed help-there was a lot of "gifts". How about Mary Seaworth getting a grant to start a coffee shop? What in the hell did that have to do with rebuilding a law office on the corner of DeMers and 5th? And it wasn't long after a bagel shop move into the space. I know someone who signed a deal so the Samson brothers could get funds to develop space in the area near the Dacotah Hotel-knowing full well the business would never move in. I know this is old stuff-but let's not make Kim Holmes some kind of recovery wonder. He's got a good restaurant and draws people who can afford his prices. They are the ones who will be sitting on the closed street tomorrow. The rest of us will be grilling weiners in our back yard. And I feel pretty good that my back yard was paid for with my own hard earned dollars-not to mention the weiners.

Aside from the obvious Dr, lawyer,e tc. Albeit, there are plenty of lawyers and PhD's stock shelves at Target. PhD's in Feminist Studies, Indian Studies, Music History, Sociology. Some of them are so indoctrinated into a hate culture that they can't stand anyone but themselves.

Anonymous Who Called Me "Asshat",

I don't live in GF anymore, and my salary is more than $10/hr, for the record.

The bottom line is that if you believe that there is an organization of cigar-smoking fatcats pulling the strings in GF, and you don't like it, maybe you should....I don't know.....RUN FOR OFFICE?!

The other option is to get on the internet and blather anonymously about conspiracies involving your pay-rate being kept low because "The Man" won't let you soar like the high-flying eagle you truly are.

shit happens...if you were not "in the shit" it ain't anyone's fault...

Greenglass, you like to talk about your past business dealings. Just what kind of business or businesses in town have you owned in the past and what is your line of business these days?

I agree totally with your statements, Kelly.

Would anyone care to explain how it is possible that Sander's is celebrating their 125th anniversary as was repeatedly stated on DAZ tonight? Just how old is Kim Holmes?!?!?

Anonymous said...

Sander's got its name from the original owners-her grandfather was Sander Johnson and the original building on Kittson avenue displayed that name, I believe. Maybe by a stretch they are claiming to date back to the original building??? Or maybe it's just DAZ reading it wrong...again.

Anonymous said...

~From Sanders website ~ SANDERS 1907 has been serving dinner since July 15, 1982. Bob & Lynda Evenson started the restaurant, then at 312 Kittson Avenue. We still have the booths that Lynda painted. The building was completed by Sander Johnson (Lynda's Grandfather) hence the name SANDERS 1907.

It looks like it should be a 25 year anniversary.

Try the comic book store.

Anonymous said...

Comics have their own bookstore?

Anonymous said...

c.y.

Comic book store-a place where one buys comic books. One may find greenglass there. My hunch.

What is going in west of the Dairy Queen on Columbia Road?

The biggest problem GF has is that the the City Council always has buttered the bread of local businesses (whether locally owned or not) at the expense of economic development and quality job creation. The last three Mayors (Polovitz, Owens and Brown) have been very passive when it comes to economic development and pretty much have let the Council do whatever it wants. LM Glassfibre and Cirrus are pleasant exceptions to this rule, but for the most part better jobs and higher wages are kept out so that local retail and restaurant establishments don't lose underemployed workers to wage competition. UND and it's increasing research endeavors are creating most of the good jobs in GF, not the Council.

Anon, I understand - just a little sarcasm snucked out!! ! :-)
