What is going on with the recent spike in crime in Grand Forks/East Grand Forks? It's scary!

With the now long presidential campaign season, what do you think are the chances of GF getting a visit from a viable candidate? I'm thinking there's still not much chance-Fargo or Bismarck may get a few who feel obligated to put a foot in every state, but other than that, I expect ND is off the map.

I don't remember the last time North Dakota voted for a Democratic presidential candidate, and with a mere three electoral votes at stake, there's little need to campaign here beyond wanting to support (or get the support of,) our congressional delegation.

That said, as an independent voter, no one either party is throwing out there holds a lot of interest. Obama, a little, although he seems a little too "packaged" to me. Everyone else is either "ho-hum" or "no thanks, the country is messed up enough already."

anonymous,
what spike in crime? Did you live here in the early 90's????

When will Frontier Airlines announce their new routes?

The crime rate in GF/EGF is still very low. There might be a spike lately, but it's nothing unusual and nothing that the police won't stop.

I still don't see why people think there is a "spike"...one bank robbery? Is that what it is about? Hardly a spike, just an incident that happens here every couple of years. Look at the police departments annual report, and you will find there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about.

Maybe it's the ATM heists, which all seem to be the same person.

There is probably a good chance the person that had knocked over the ATM at Simonson might have knocked over the ATM up north.

I still don't see the state of ND going to a democratic. I pray every day that Hillary won't get elected. Almost anyone but Hillary in my opinion.

Goon - I'm about as blue as you can get, but I have to agree with you about Hillary. Unfortunately it's one of those visceral things, not necessarily her policies, most of which I would support. I just think she's one of the most disingenous politicians to come along in a long time. And that's saying something.

How about the hilarious fact that WDAZ reported the new Canad Inn building to be "the second tallest building in North Dakota"?

Lol.

"Second" as in "right behind" the State Capitol Building, the Fargo Radisson, the Fargo High Rise, the Bank of the West Tower (Fargo), the Black Building (Fargo).

So really, it's the seventh or even 8th. But nah, call it the 2nd tallest.

Noone is checking facts at WDAZ anymore, so fuck it.

Is it taller than the State Elevator?

I heard you can see all the way to Minto from the top of The 'Nad.

Thank you Fair Board! Moving the fair to the Alerus sucked!

It's back where it belongs.

Thank you Fair Board! ... It's back where it belongs.

I have to agree with that, although the old location is a bit of a dump, or was the last time I went to the fair there. My memory is of mud all over the place and mosquitos like you've never seen.

If they can fix up those two issues, it should boost attendance. Who likes going to a fair in a parking lot?

"It's back where it belongs."

Maybe this will be the beginning of the unscrewing of the North end of GF. The next step should be returning the Potato Bowl parade to University Ave.

According to next week's GF city council packet, the Gateway Drive McDonald's is going to be remodeled. They did some minor inside remodeling a couple years ago so hopefully they will now be working on the outside. I wish they would make it look like the McDonald's located north of West Acres in Fargo. They recently redid that one and they gave it a 1950's retro diner look on the outside. It's cute looking.

Hey, what possessed WDAZ to recently bring back a "reporter" who can't get through a few short sentences without getting totally lost and just giving up? Did anybody see the 6 PM newscast tonight? I could understand very little of what this "reporter" said before she got lost and WDAZ was stuck with at least 10 seconds of dead silence while she just spaced out. Is this a high school speech class or is it a local newscast? I'm not naming names here, but I think you all know the who I'm talking about.

Regarding the WDAZ reporter, I'm afraid the situation, and reality is, that's what you get in a small, isolated, "hick" community. The U.S. is a very large, amazing country, with many spectacular places to live. The sad reality is, talented people, in any industry, generally, won't want to put roots down here. In many cases, people do because of family issues, they're from here, etc. But, in general, very talented people hanging in G.F., I just don't see it.

If the adage you get what you pay for is true, WDAZ must have the lowest salaries in the country. I've often wondered why Wheeler and Pat have stayed around so long. They're pretty good at what they do.

I noticed that the reporter anonymous was talking about had a story on tonight's news, but didn't get to do a live intro or end to her story...probably a good idea! I have to agree that, even when she is doing a recorded story, her pronunciation and enunciation - for lack of a better term - stink. WDAZ can do better...

I have no idea about the second, but John Wheeler doesn't live in Grand Forks -- he's WDAY in Fargo's weather guy, he (and all other weather people on 'DAZ) prerecords the "Grand Forks Local" weather report about fifteen minutes before he does the Fargo weather live. If you have Directv, you can flip between channel 6 and 8 at 6:15PM and see the same guy giving two totally different reports.

From the Simpsons:
Superintendent: "Why is your lunch lady doubling as a nurse?"
Lunchlady: "I get two checks this way."

Oh, I know he's based in Fargo. I'm just wondering why he never left WDAY/Z for greener pastures.
