New Gateway McDonald's

The McDonald's on Gateway Drive will close early next month in preparation for a major building project. The existing building will be torn down in early May. A new McDonald's building will be constructed on the property and will open about three months later.

The existing Gateway McDonald's, despite being seemingly very busy, is a small, outdated building. I'm personally happy to see this building replaced with a new structure.

I hope the north end isn't too dangerous for a new McDonald's.

My friend's girlfriend was looking for an apartment the other day, and checked out one on 18th Av S.

The landlord of the building told her "she should take any apartment on the south end, because the north end was too dangerous".

Ha! I live on the N. end and I don't think of it as dangerous at all. But, hey whatever everyone has there own opinions. I've been in the same duplex for over 3 years and never had an issue nor heard of an issue in my direct neighborhood.

As far as the McDonald's, I'm glad they are tearing it down and doing some improvements. However, it's the closest fast food place to me house where we can run to for a quick bite besides BK which I can't eat.

What does is it say about a city when a McDonalds is greeted with excitement?

It is Grand Forks, the only thing to talk about is new restaurants and businesses coming and going......and floods.

people - give me a break. If you hate these blogs, get off of them. If you haven't noticed, there has been talk of a new hospital, economic development, jobs, etc. on this blog - as well as open threads.
The fact that a restaurant in town is re-building is good news. It means that the business has been good and that the company sees the city as a good investment.
And by the way - I really hope they do something about their driveway...it is an accident waiting to happen.

" If you hate these blogs, get off of them."

This is a variant of the chronic North Dakotan reaction to criticism: "If you don't like it here, leave." It seems to imply that everyone must march lock-step with the opinion. Get rid of the other side and all you have is group of like-minded people nodding yes to everything.

Further, I think it's a stretch to McD's a restaurant; it's a fast food place. And it's hardly a symbol of the economic health of a community. But, I guess, we should be happy with the way it will boost the number of good paying jobs in GF.

You know what else is a chronic North Dakotan reaction? Constant pissing and moaning about how bad life is up there without actually DOING anything about it. If you do not want to "march lock-step with the opinion", man, DO SOMETHING!! There are some of us who didn't like it up there, so we packed up and left. The difference between myself and others who turned their back on GF is that each year I return to try to bring something fun to town that I wished was around when I lived there.

I'm the guy who produces and directs the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Empire every year for Halloween. I am aware that Rocky is not everyone's cup of tea, but I at least did something about what I thought was wrong with GF. I felt that GF lacked any real entertainment, and I figured that maybe there were others up there who felt the same, and so I decided to produce an annual show that I figured would be different from the regular offerings up there. It turns out that my gamble has worked out well, as we get pretty consistant crowds each year, along with "Thank You's" and messages of encouragement for us to "Please keep coming back".

My point is that if you want something done about life up there, come up with a list of what you think would make GF a little more palatable, and then pick one item and RUN WITH IT! In all honesty, ec99, if you want to try something new, let me know and I'll try to help you either implement it, or search for the information you need to implement it yourself.

Less talk, more action!

Thank you Kelly!

And amen about the Mcdonalds driveway, how often do you drive away from the drive thru only to 'nearly miss' another car tryin to plow through instead of using the mini mart way?

The main thing I see with the rebuilding of the Gateway McD's is if it wasn't a viable business it wouldn't be rebuilding.

It has to be generating revenue and with it's location I'll bet most of the $$ it generates are from out of town.

I've had two of my cousins that were given the chance to prove their work ethic at that specific McD's that have gone on to be very good at their adult jobs. Call it what ever you want but it definitely has it's place in the community.

On somewhat of a side note, the Gateway McDonald's had a fire last night...no kidding. There was a fire with the french fryer at about 10 PM. The place was surrounded by four fire trucks, two ambulances, and several police cars right around the time the storm sirens were going last night.

This means no more french fries at this McDonald's for the time being...probably not until the new building is finished. Must be a pain for the employees..."No, I'm sorry, you can't order french fries...we don't have any..."

They definitely need to figure out a decent traffic flow in and out of that McDonalds. They also could use two drive-throughs, as it is impossible to park with a line stretching back towards the Mini-Mart waiting to get through the Drive-up. They could also take a cue from Burger King and have a rope system in place so it is operated on a first come, first served basis. It is impossible to know who has already been served as it stands now.

lol I was there saturday morning and they wer changing out a fryer for a new one.

I for one am very ticked off about the new Mcdonalds coming in. THAT PLACE IS A LAND MARK!! someone who would trade history for quality is an idiot. I for one prefer a little mold and rats in a restaurant building.

Well sorry old chap, why i must say, i disagree. Now McDonalds is one of my finer diets, I mean 1$ mcchickens and double cheesburgers are very deluctable. They really need new building though. But on one condition. US TAX PAYERS DONT PAY FOR IT!! I'M SICK OF GRAND FORK'S TAXES GOING UP AND UP AND UP AND UP, WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO DO STEAL US OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME INTO THE NEW MCDONALDS?!?!??! PLEASE TELL ME WHY THE TAXES CONTINUE TO RISE 10 YEARS AFTER THE GAL DARN FLOOD?!?!?!

Yeah ! ! !

Where is scott hennen when we really need him. He will convince veryone the city is just fine and our taxes are just like all the other cities in ND and maybe less than their's.
