Anyone interested in organizing a triathlon in the spring?
What's on everyone's wish list for Grand Forks?
Me, I'm wishing for more diverse shopping and restaurants, such as Ann Taylor, Urban Outfitters, a GF branch of Ristorante Isabella (a fab Italian place in Fargo) and some smoothy and bagel shops.
I'm also wishing for Center Court and the Wellness Center to get pools, for someone to donate money to turn the railroad thingamajiggy in the river into a fabulous fountain, and for a rec rental place (bikes, skis, sleds, etc) to open up near the river.
Revitalise downtown. Starting with a triathlon.
Bagels, bagels, bagels... a store would do so good in Grand Forks... hard to believe we don't have one in a city this size.
Jamba Juice
Bagels...Jamba Juice...excellent suggestions. And an authentic pizza place. Think of it: all the pizza venues in town, yet, not one with atmosphere AND a memorable product. The triathlon would be yet another tool to get folks to come to Grand Forks...and it'd be easier to carry out than the Dragon Races (but it'd be wonderful if they haven't forgotten that, too).
Most of all, my wish is that everyone takes time to enjoy their neighbors. You've got a great little city, with tons of wonderful people.
There was a Chesapeake Bakery here 6-10 years ago in the strip mall on the NE corner of 32nd Ave and South Columbia. And due to any number of reasons local (then a lack of street entrance into parking lot) or national (http://www.chesbagel.com/), they don't exist anymore in town, and have gone from 200 stores down to fewer than 10 nationally.

Jamba Juice.
Is there any word of what is being built next to the Kohl's? Maybe I missed something in here, but I noticed this today while driving up to the new Verizon store. At initial glance, I thought to myself, "ah, those Kohl's people have already noticed the store is a bit small..." then realized it's a completely separate store being erected there. Hmmm...
Matthew, that would be the new Ashley Furniture/Furniture Outlets USA building (I haven't heard which of the two formats they decided to go with). This is just one of two large furniture store developments currently under construction on the south side. The other is the Furniture Row development being built behind Lowes. GF shoppers are going to have plenty of choices for furniture shopping come next year. So hopefully they can stop going to Fargo!
What is it with this Jamba Juice anyways? Why is it so great? Even though I like to think I am pretty well versed in national franchises, I can't say I've ever heard much about it. Do they just sell juice?

It is a great fruit smoothie place. One of those things that once you try it, you get addicted to them. Everytime I head to Minneapolis, I always have to stop a couple different times.
Smoothies, Juice, wheat grass, a few baked goods selection.
They are a pretty big chain. Over 500 locations in over half the states.

How could I have forgotten bagels? I've been complaining about the lack of a bagel shop for almost a year now.
I still think that downtown is where these small stores need to go--there's nothing cool about being in a strip mall, especially since you still have to drive to six different ones to get what you want, and so the purpose of having the small stores together is lost.
I believe there was a downtown bagel shop too - locally-owned New York Bagels on the corner of 5th and Demers. They didn't make it either.

By the way, not to rain on anyone's parade with these messages, but my point is that GF has had bagel shops, but they didn't survive. Either they were run poorly, don't make enough money of just bagels, or GF doesn't have the market for them. That's all. Jamba Juice on the other hand ... that's just pure deliciousness.
It would be nice to have a decent deli (like Schlotzky) here, which would have the bagel component.
The bagel place downtown was okay, but pretty pricey, we went every once in a while when we were down there for some other reason.

They are definitely addicting.
I think a triathlon would make a great annual event. Unfortunately I'm not livin in GF so probably won't be much help. Where would the swimming be? The Mighty Red?
I'd like to see a GF-Fargon in the middle-of-winter run competition. We could bring in the hard-core types from all over the country. The folks who are into the 100-mile trail-running stuff etc.
I was thinking (as poor as this would be) that the swimming could be at the YMCA, which is right downtown anyway.
Myabe some day the river will be clean enough to swim in . . .
I once worked at a bagel shoppe on Long Island, and I can tell you without a doubt that the bagels served at New York Bagel can't even walk in the shadow of the bagels made at Superior Bagel.
I really liked the bagel place downtown (NY Bagel) although it was pricey. With recent growth downtown I would hope someone could give it another try...
I'd hope Dakota Harvest would read this. With their dedication to quality (I don't work there, really) bagels would be done right.
Has anyone else noticed that Dakota Harvest has changed lately? Outside of the fact that their holidays items have overtaken their regular items - how about the fact that everything now tastes like Panni oil (and you smell like it too when you leave the store). Yuck - install a vent!
Swimming in the Red River is not a good idea...even if it had sparkling water, it has really tricky currents that would make a swimming event pretty tricky
