New poll: smoke free UND?

Closing the old poll...
The old poll question was "Do you support UND's decision to sue the NCAA?". Click here to view the results. Of 126 voters, 52%(66) answered yes, 45%(57) answered no, and 2%(3) were unsure.

Opening the new poll...
The new poll question is "Would you like to see smoking banned on the UND campus?". Happy voting.

Rather than banned, limited would make more sense. Curious what prompted this poll, was there something in the news recently or is it a proposal on campus?

The Board of Higher Education is slowly pushing all campuses to go smoke free. Minot State and Bismarck State already have gone smoke free.

Since smoking was banned by law in all fedral, and state owned and operated buildings and facilities years ago, this should be a mute subject. The individuals in charge of the university should be enforcing the policy. This should also include the state owned dorms, hotel, and family housing units.

Whoo-hoo! Let's take away yet another liberty, cloaked in "public health." As an ex-smoker, you'd think I'd be in favour of this, but no.

Smoking is already banned in buildings, the intent of this is to prevent you from lighting up outside, so long as you're on U property. Smokers will be driven to stand out in the street.

Pick your favourite "vice," folks. Drinking, trans-fats, television, religion, whatever. Trust that there's someone out there who's thinking about how to ban it for your own "good." Smoking's the tip of the iceberg.

And, it's ultimately stupid. No one is going to go to a particular college simply because they ban smoking. But there are those who (wisely) will NOT go there for that very reason (whether because they smoke, or in protest of the Big Brother nature of such a ban.)

Pardon the cynicism, but given that UND pulls in money in the high 6 figures for parking violations every year, don't be surprised if this is just a ploy to hire smoking police to hand out citations too.
