Hugo's to enter liquor business

Hugo's, Grand Forks' locally owned grocery store chain, will soon become the city's newest liquor retailer.  The company is applying for a Class 2 off-sale license from the city to operate a liquor store in a portion of the Hugo's on South Columbia Road.  Floor plans seem to show a liquor store with its own outside entrance and exit separate from the grocery store space.

What do you think of this news?  Do you think Hugo's will have success in the liquor business?  What does this mean for Grand Forks' locally owned chain of liquor stores, Happy Harry's?  Do you think that Hugo's is planning to add liquor stores to their other metro grocery stores?

There goes the neighborhood. :o) Hugo's, for liquor; who'd have thought!
I wish them well, but it sure seems like an odd combination.

common all over the country.

I agree, common all over the country. No big deal and I like the idea. I hope they do it on 32nd and give columbia and hal a little competition.

Anonymous said...

It will not hurt Happy Harrys. The only way you could put a dent into their sales is to open up beer and wine sales to all grocery stores.

Justin said...

VERY common in the rest of the country... I lived in MPLS where you could do it and in Sioux Falls where you can, plus just got back from driving down to the southern tip of Texas and about every gas station and grocery store we stopped in along the way you could buy alcohol.

Minot's Albertson's grocery store has (or had, it's been awhile since I've been there) a liquor store attached, with a separate entrance to maintain 21 & over customers only.

The Hugo's addition will do well, one stop shopping in a sense, but one store won't make a dent in the Happy Harry's sales.

I've yet to see a grocery store in the US sell hard alcohol as well as beer & wine. Many grocery stores I've visited in Europe and South America carried darn near everything one could ever want.

Anonymous said...

The grocery stores I have been in, in Iowa sell hard liquor in them. One whole aisle dedicated to booze.

Anonymous said...

It would be nicer if they could incorporate the off sale with the grocery so you could just put all of your groceries and booze in your cart and checkout once. Like other states that have liquor in the stores.

Anonymous said...

I agree, that would be much more convenient But they probably don't want their grocery clerks carding shoppers.

Anonymous said...

Just spoke with Happy Harry (Hal) and he is looking to go into grocery business and give Hugo's a run for their money ! Go Happy Harry ! We may have a gas war here with Harry and Hugo and Walmart ! greenglass4

Anonymous said...

I don't like this idea. Hugo's is a "family marketplace," not a place to buy alcohol. This is a bad idea for their image, in my opinion. Sure, other "big city" supermarket chains do this, but this is Grand Forks, ND.

Anonymous said...

The state law in ND prevents sales of liquor in a general grocery store. It must be in a separate enclosed shop. BTW, Minot's Wal-Mart also has an attatched liquor store, which I hadn't seen before.

deadstick said...

Wally's in both Devils Lake and Grafton have attached liquor stores. Pretty common on a weekend or before a holiday to have to go grab some groceries and wine/beer - I personally would start going there when that's the case vs. going to Super One and then Happy Harry's.

I agree though that they should have a separate entrance (probably required by state law anyways) and have a wall separating the two.

Anonymous said...

It's about time.

North Dakota is the only place I've been to that doesn't have beer and wine in the grocery stores and gas stations, save for a few dry counties in Tennessee I've visited.

I'm sure there must be other states like that, but I've never been to them.

Now, if only you guys could erase that silly "closed before noon on Sunday" law for retailers!

Anonymous said...

With GF being a binge drinkers capital ... I think they'll be plenty of alcohol sales to go around ... I don't see Hugo's interrupting any of the other liquor stores' business.

Anonymous said...

"I don't see Hugo's interrupting any of the other liquor stores' business."

The only way they won't have an impact on nearby stores is if they create NEW drinkers, which I'm guessing wouldn't be a good idea.

If they're successful, they'll probably run Columbia Liquors out of business next door, as there's no near great reason to go there over anywhere else. Harry has selection and (sometimes) good prices.

It would be nice if they went for more of a "drinks to go along with your dinner" kind of thing, like a higher end wine shop that many cities have, rather than a "get your whiskey, rum and tequila here!" party atmosphere. There are many that will talk down any level of sophistication, but I think that the binge drinking crowd is already being served by other establishments.

Anonymous said...

Now the Hugo's jingle will be more meaningful to the kids who sing along,"You're gonna find more great prices and more great stuff when you go to hugo's. beep beep"

There seems to be confusion about which location this is happening at. When I initially heard about this I thought it was the South WASHINGTON location, the initial post by gfg says south COLUMBIA, and anon at 8:52 seems to think it's the one on 32nd ave South (by referring to columbia liquors next door). I'm pretty certain it's the south COLUMBIA location across from Altru since that is what both Ryan Schuster was reporting in the Herald and what gfg thinks. Can anyone clear this up? If not for me then at least for other readers here. Thanks

Anonymous said...

10:40 am

I dont think you are confused. As a matter of fact, didn't dagwoods have an offsale establishment close by at one time? So, a liquor store would not be new to the area.

Anonymous said...

Both grocery stores in Williston have liquor stores attached, with NO problems. But then again, Williston also has a strip club, so folks out west are more open to businesses.

Anonymous said...

Greenglass, we know that is a bald faced lie because hal g. wouldn't stoop so low as to give you the time of day. You are now a certified Loser...

Only in Grand Forks does this make front page news in the paper. Who CARES??!! Sure a little story in the business section is reasonable, but front page?!

And for the person that says this will ruin the 'family image' of Hugos, give me a BREAK! This isn't the 1940's anymore. What's wrong with going to the grocery store buying some backyard BBQ items and a case of beer on a warm summer night? Come on people.....

Anonymous said...

joe,

I like to get wasted every once in a while like everyone else, but I do not believe Hugo's and alcohol go together. Is this really a necessity, anyway? There are liquor stores all over this city. Does Hugo's not make enough money already? I guess when money greed sets in, you forget about the simple, foundational things which made your business successful in the first place.

I like Hugo's because it's a well-organized, friendly place to shop for groceries. By adding a liquor section, it's like putting a tattoo on a beautiful little baby, hahah.

Anonymous said...

I don't think Hugos makes enough money, just look how much you spend on a 'normal' shopping trip. I can easily spend $20-40 more at Hugos than Wal-Mart or Target. That definately adds up over the course of a year. Sure I get my groceries bagged and I do enjoy the friendly service, but I don't think it's worth the extra money.

Back to the topic....

The Hugos on Columbia (across from Altru) has very good potential to add a liquor store due to the amount of homes in close proximity and for people coming out of surgery that want some hard stuff to go along with their pain medication (half-way joking).

I don't know, I just see it as a business trying to expand their base in these hard economic times. Having everying under one roof is alot more appealing these days instead of running all over town and facing the crappy traffic lights in this town. Although 32nd Ave has gotten much better.

It's hard for me to comprehend how people think it would turn the grocery store into some sleazy place that you all make it out to be.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Joe. Hugo's is insanely overpriced. I rarely ever go into a Hugo's. I wonder if they are going to overprice their liquor as well? I will continue to give Happy Harry's my business. They have a large selection and everytime I go I find the staff quite friendly and helpful.

On another note, though.. does Grand Forks really need another liquor store? I'm all about competition, but seriously. Aside from churches and elementary schools, I am almost certain there is some type of liquor establishment (or two) everywhere in this town. I think there's more to do in this town than drink (though I'm sure a handful of people will tell me otherwise).

Anonymous said...

You cant be serious. Who cares how many liquor stores are in this town? Who cares if we NEED another liqour store in this town? It's private business trying to expand. It's no skin off of anyones nose as far as I can tell.

Anonymous said...

There used to be a liquor store in that complex years ago when Dagwoods was there. So, it is nothing new in that area. It was probably missed and hugos is filling that void. I say good for them, now get over it, please...

brooks_87 said...

I also have trouble seeing how Hugo's is a family place. What kind of family goes to get groceries together for fun? I grew up in Minot, where some of the grocery stores have always had liquor stores, along with Walmart. I've never had a problem with it and I have no idea how it could turn a store into a sleazy place. I really wish we would get with the times and let grocery stores and gas stations sell booze inside. If you see it all the time, it probably wouldn't seem like a such a forbidden fruit. Its funny to hear posters whine that we don't need another hotel or liquor store. Obviously whoever is building them has done research before they will invest their money into it. Lastly, the profit margins for grocery stores are tiny. If they have another way to make money thats great.

Anonymous said...

I think it will be nice to be able to pick up a bottle of wine to go with the dinner you just bought in one stop. I don't shop at Hugo's much and I drink even less so I could really care less but it is a nice thought.

Anonymous said...

Hey Joe ! you are correct, Hugo's is way over priced compared to Target, Walmart, etc. Hugo M family needs more money, so booze and homeless will change the store and run paying customers to Super One and Walmart. That's bus buzz ! greenglass4

Anonymous said...

Anyone who shops for their food at Target or Walmart are cheap individuals. Groceries should be purchased at a grocery store. End of story. Why don't you guys just move into Walmart if you are worried so much about price.

If you prefer Walmart to other stores, then I guess we can't have a civilized conversation about "values" here either way.

Anonymous said...

Wow... a post about a liquor store more having more comments than a post about the Alerus Center?

People in Grand Forks must just like to complain...

Anonymous said...

"Anyone who shops for their food at Target or Walmart are cheap individuals. Groceries should be purchased at a grocery store."

Super Target and Super Walmart ARE grocery stores, idiot. Just because they're a national brand instead of a local one (Hugos) or regional one (Super One) doesn't mean anything, aside from probably better prices on some things.

I hate Walmart and refuse to shop there, but Targets produce is waaaaay better than Hugos, and Super One beats them both on produce and meat.

I love people who say that you should buy from local people to keep the profits local... how many houses / cars / toasters do you think the Magnuson family needs to buy? They're just a small group of people, any profits that they're "spending in Grand Forks" probably don't amount to much.

If you want to have an impact on the city, you should buy from whoever pays and treats their employees the best, and whoever donates money back to the community, whether they're local or not. If thats all that matters to you, shopping at Hugos probably isn't having the impact that you think it is.

Anonymous said...

hey greenglass, finally a comment about something you know, homelessness. Your comment is ignorant. You said that hugos will run paying customers to superone and walmart. What is a non-paying customer? Shoplifters? I think your mother threw away the kid and kept the afterbirth...

I don't drink a lot either but agree that getting the occasional bottle of wine or spirits on the same stop would draw me to that Hugos instead of one of the others and a trip to Happy Harrys. Nothing against the latter but it is more convenient.

Anonymous said...

Wait til the Walmart or Sam's Club liquor stores come...finally we'll have some competition for Happy Harry and hopefully some price wars.

And a lot less Canadians in the parking lot at Hugo's too. Sometimes when I'm up the Happys to get some whiskey it look like I'm in Manitoba. Then I see the smokes aren't 8 bucks a pack and I know I'm okay.

"Anyone who shops for their food at Target or Walmart are cheap individuals. Groceries should be purchased at a grocery store. End of story. Why don't you guys just move into Walmart if you are worried so much about price."

I shop at Wal-Mart. There. I said it. I absolutely dread going there (especially on the weekends), but I save a lot of money if I shop there. When I say a lot of money, I don't mean a dollar or two.. I'm talking about $15-20. To me, that's a lot of money. My husband and I are living off only one income and we have two babies. I would rather shop at Super One, but right now I just can't.. I need to save as much money as I can. So am I a "cheap individual?" I guess if that's what you want to call it, then fine. I look at it as cutting corners where I have to so that we can survive.

Also.. if Target and Wal-Mart is going to sell groceries at a noticeably lower price than our local grocers, why not shop at Target and Wal-Mart? I know most people look at Wal-Mart as an evil corporation, but if they are going to sell you the exact same product for 30-40% cheaper, what's the big deal? I guess I don't understand why it upsets you so much. If money isn't a problem for you, then fine.. shop where you want. Big deal. Who cares? Not all of us have the luxury of not having to worry about money.. therefore we buy what we need at whatever store is going to sell it to us for less, reguardless of its name.

Anonymous said...

"if they are going to sell you the exact same product for 30-40% cheaper, what's the big deal?"

Because they screw over the company that makes the product to get the 30-40%, or they screw over the country by getting it from slave/prison labor in China, India or other third world nations. It's not like Walmart makes 30-40% less profit than Target or someone else does.

Enjoy your blood money. Walmart is a scum corporation that lives on the misery of others. Prove that you're better by not shopping there.

Anonymous said...

"So am I a 'cheap individual?'"

Yes. Sorry about your situation, but you are. Even the smell of Walmart is disgusting.

RE: "I love people who say that you should buy from local people to keep the profits local... how many houses/cars/toasters do you think the Magnuson family needs to buy?"

The REAL question is how many decent jobs does the Magnuson family provide for people in the community?

I once worked at Hugos, and it was WAY better than slaving away for Wal-Mart. I'd rather take a smaller, family-run company over a low-paying corporate behemoth.

Plus, Hugos often sponsors local organizations and events. Wal-Mart does very little for the community.

Anonymous said...

We shop at Wal-Mart too, and we make a 6 figure income and have graduate level degrees. If you think that Wal-Mart is the only company out there screwing their supply sources, countries of origin, etc., than you're not very bright. Most of the stores in GF carry primarily Chinese made products. Wal-Mart gets hit the hardest by criticism because they're the big dog on top. If you refused to go places because of corruption and greed, then you might as well stay at home, oh wait, most people couldn't even claim their home as free from those sins.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the people that shop at walmart. I shop there and I like it. I know some people that work at walmart, so don't tell me they pay less than hugos pays to it's employees. You can get on that anti-walmart bandwagon, but you are not proving anything to me.
As if you really give a rat's ass about the 3rd world countries. Give me a break.

Anonymous said...

"We shop at Wal-Mart too, and we make a 6 figure income and have graduate level degrees."

Sure, you do. Oh no wait a second, we make a 7 figure income and have PhDs, and we shop at Kmart. Woo-hoo, we wins teh Internets!

If you really have higher education, make a decent income and are proud of the fact that you buy cheap crap at a retailer that is well documented for its unethical treatment of employees and suppliers, you are a big part of what's wrong with this world.

You whine about politicians trading scruples for money, while you're doing the same thing. Save a couple of bucks (that your supposed income would imply you don't really need to do) and who cares where that savings came from. At least a politician tries to make a fortune by selling out, you're doing it to save 50 cents on a picture frame and a nickel on a bag of chips.

"As if you really give a rat's ass about the 3rd world countries. Give me a break."

Believe it or not, some people really do care about people other than themselves. You should try it some time.

Anonymous said...

*sigh*

WILL YOU PEOPLE GROW UP?!!

Anonymous said...

"unethical treatment of employees and suppliers" - regarding to Walmart. If this was true then why is it that the majority of people working there have been there for 10+ years? If it was sooo bad then they wouldn't stay there. Walmart is also one of the the only places in town that will hire someone with a disability to do something other than clean floors. I think Walmart is crowded and messy but the brands are the same brands you will find at most any other department store, just at cheaper prices.

Anonymous said...

What kind of car do you drive? All of the car makers contract parts out of the country for years. Are you gonna start riding a bicycle year 'round? Ever buy anything from KMart? They buy tons of stuff made outside the USA. Of course everything in Target is A-OK, right?

Have you read the signs at the check-outs at WalMart? They are hiring and the benefit list looks pretty good.

Now since you know so much about local companies, tell us what their benefits are.

Lets see some actual comparisons and not just repeat bunch of left wing liberal bull $hit.

Anonymous said...

A lot of people's beef with Wal-Mart is that they led the way into cheap product/labor. If others hadn't followed, others wouldn't be in business.

Obviously there is a consumer demand for cheap stuff made at slave wages, which is too bad.

The ripple effect from this has caused a lot of consequences for consumer goods in general.

I lived in CA for five years and all grocery stores and gas stations sold alcohol - beer, wine & liquor. I really don't see an issue with this, and only in a very conservative community like GF would this even make the front page of the page. Seriously.

Target has excellent produce, and I shop at Hugo's for meat (Target has terrible meat, imo) - I don't hit up Super One because I don't like the layout of the store, but looking at their ads, I always feel like I SHOULD because they have good sales and coupons.

And Wal-Mart is so ghetto, I wouldn't shop there if they handed me $20 on the way in the door.

Anonymous said...

You still haven't shown where WalMart pays more or less than local business or compared benefits with local businesses. Lots of businesses have paid fines over the years, that's how we learn. What, you think that the Grand Forks Walmart is locally owned and operated? The procedures or attitudes in place in California, Pennsylvania and where ever else they're running afoul of the law are CORPORATE policies, not the result of some sort of rogue office.

Show me where Hugos or Valley Dairy or Simonsons Lumber have been sued due to these sorts of policies, and I'll concede that you have a point. But so far, I'm the one showing the facts of past and likely current behavior, and your only response is to say that the facts don't matter, because they have a sign at the cash register saying that they have health insurance.

You forgot the rest of the article, which points out that it works out to an average $800 / employee on the 401k, which is probably a match for what the employees put in (like most companies do), the stock purchase plan amounted to $65 a person (at the current price, that's a whole one share per person), probably $700 in bonuses per employee (they don't break out how many employee qualified for that piece) and the remainder is "discounted merchandise" that every retail outlet provides.

Woop-dee-doo. The discounts and stock, who cares, the 401k match they probably have to do, and they don't say who got the bonuses. This, from a company that made an 11 billion dollar PROFIT in the last year.

Nothing wrong with making a profit, but don't fool yourself, thinking that they're all generous giving what you've posted.

"This may piss you off, but people just don't care what they pay the workers in China."

I don't really care that much either, but the fact that they've moved all of those jobs overseas (the US used to have one heck of a textiles and clothing industry, and our electronics were second to none. We now produce neither in any meaningful amounts) should alarm anyone with a brain.

And I will say it again, I worked for both Hugos and Wal-Mart. I'll share my experience in simple terms:

Hugos: family run, personal, good benefits, flexible, makes LOCAL community contributions & sponsors LOCAL events

Wal-Mart: behemoth, machine, zero flexibility, pathetic benefits, gives back very little to the local community

As for people working at Wal-Mart for 10+ years, did it ever occur to you that they may have NO CHOICE? Wal-Mart has single-handedly destoryed small town America by setting up shop and shuttering virtually everything else. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Low prices come at a high cost.

Yep. I don't shop there, period. Haven't for years, once I decided that I disagreed with their business practices and would not support and encourage them. I suppose it costs me something, but it's worth the extra expense, to me. If its not for you, that's fine.

Anon @ 7:53, you missed the point:

Wal-Mart led the shift to the "low-prices at any cost" on the part of both consumer attitudes and distributor practices. If Nash Finch didn't follow, they'd be out of business. It's not to say WM was THE first and ONLY - far from it, but they were the biggest and most influential in leading the way down.

Think of it as a run on the bank that keeps running.

I will spend more money, willingly, at local places, in a seemingly vain effort to do something about the problem.

Pardon me, but if you read your post, it seems you would probably be in the non english speaking category. Go back and finish 3rd grade before you try to post a comment here. The way you talk about Canadians and Mexicans makes you sound like a retard...

There needs to be another 'open thread' this is getting way off topic. Any chance of having like two a week? One on Monday and one on Thursday? Even once a week is fine too. Just something to keep it fresh. Thanks!

Guess you missed the time in Hugos when one of the bosses was berating an employee in front of customers. It was pretty sick - I don't go back there unless I can't find something elsewhere.

RE: "...here are a list of jobs around town.. Menards, Sears, JCPenney, Simonsons, and McDonalds"

Ah, a whole world of career opportunities. Thank you!
