Spent 7 days in Sturgis, SD area. Home of the 68th Motorcycle Rally. Has really changed over the years to almost 500,000 riders from all over the world. Women now are in big numbers owning/riding their own bikes ! Highlight was bikes, babes, and beer contests all over; the campgrounds, Buffalo Chip was the best with bands Kiss, ZZTop, and John McCain and wife cindy. greenglass4

Same ol bs. What did you expect from Sturgis, anyhow?

More about Sturgis and the standoff between 50 police and a motorcycle club ! #81. But off to kayaking on the big lake and big river: Lake Itasca and Miss R. Later. greenglass4

Has anyone noticed any changes at restaurants that might be due to the higher cost of food, etc? The last two times that I went to a certain popular Mexican restaurant in Grand Forks, the margaritas seemed way watered down. I've heard the same about this restaurant in another city, too.

This is off topic, and I'm not entirely sure anybody here will be interested in this, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway.

I'm producing the sixth annual performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Empire Arts Center this October and I have it cast for the most part, but I still need a Dr. Frank N Furter, a Rocky and an Eddie/Dr. Scott.

If you folks know of anybody who is interested in being in the show, please let me know. I'll be holding auditions when I get up there in early October, but if there are any interested parties I'll give them first preference.

All of our rehearsals will be in Grand Forks at the Fire Hall Theatre this year, so no need to blow gas on trips to Fargo anymore. I'll be happy to work around anybody's schedules.

We have a cast of veterans who are a blast to work with and all in all the experience is great fun!

If you have any questions, just let me know!

Off Topic??

Hell, you were just preceded by two of greenglass4's posts. There ain't no topic.

A Rocky Horror Picture show, give me a break, that cult classic needs to be laid to rest along with the mob movies and shows. No wonder why violent crime is still a problem, because we haven't cleaned up our culture yet. Where in the world is American decency!

OUWxGuesser said...

I enjoyed Rocky Horror last year. Will look forward to it again this fall! I'm not the actor type, however, so I'll stick to the audience.

I want to talk about Iraq. And why the hell we're still there.

Anonymous said...

We are in Iraq to protect the "good guys" from the "bad guys".

The Black Hills of SD is becoming just another playground for the rich & famous.

This weekends Heritage Parade in EGF was nice. The kids had a great time grabbing up the buckets of candy being tossed out and the weather was perfect. I loved the monster trucks. Even the Farmers market was nice but they did not have the local honey stand that they had last year...anyone know where I could find locally produced honey?

Anonymous said...

newntown-
SInce North Dakota is the leading honey producing state in the nation, there is a good chance anything you buy in the store would have came from here.

Hey Anon 3:31pm Aug 18. Your comment about the Black Hills. For 150 photos of bikes at Sturgis, babes, and ZZTop go to: rapidcityjournal.com/sturgisstreetblog. And red and white are the colors and 81 is the number (alphabet 8=h and 1=a) name of group that was locked down by 50 law enforcement officers at Rally on Tue. greenglass4

They carry local honey at Amazing Grains-I am sure there are other places also, but I am certain you can get some there.

anon 1:17pm Aug 18? Why are we in Iraq ? Bill O'Reilly recently stated it is because of Jewish lobby in USA and the State of Isreal.

Anonymous said...

I want to talk about the kickass cream puffs and chocolate croissants I got at the farmer's market on Saturday! They were so good.

Anonymous said...

Why we're in Iraq? There's a company out there on contracts worth billions and billions..and check who their CEO was from 1995 to 2000..

Coincidence huh?? Nothing like war to make the rich richer.

RE: Quality of life in the Valley

Interesting article in today's Herald on Joseph Duncan; an eye-opener about how society has changed our lifestyle, even in this rural area.

Our family of eight kids grew up alongside Highway 2, and the folks never once locked the door. In fact, I easily recall feeding many of the fellows that walked the Great Northern tracks across the highway, or came up from the state road itself for something to eat or a drink of water.

Sad, how things change, sometimes.

I was reading the heralds website this morning regarding underage drinking and changing the laws to 18 here were some of the comments:

Do you think the drinking age should be lowered?

Mike H.
Grand Forks, ND
8/19 11:18 AM If they have the option to draft you into war when your 18, then you should be able to have a drink. I also think 18 years old is quite young to put your life at risk and but you don't receive all your freedoms. So why dont they start drafting adults 21 years and older to fight in a war. Allot of young adults sign papers to join the military not understanding what they are getting into as well. Is that the same as having a drink? Not understanding the risks. So maybe we should better educate our you adults and give them a chance.

Richard R.
East Grand Forks, MN
8/19 10:37 AM America's laws seems to think that the age of 18 is a adult.. If the law thinks that 18 is a adult, then the law is the law.. So lower the drinking age to 18 then.. Many of our 18 year olds died in that stupid war in Iraq.. Were they adults? If 18 year olds commit a crime.. They are treated as an adult.. So if the law jails 18 year olds of a crime, I will support the 18 year olds choice to drink.. I know too many stories of people in the ages of 30-50 who are just as stupid as a 18 year old when they drink.. All adults are treated the same by the law.

Bob M.
8/19 10:19 AM 18 years of age; vote for leaders; be drafted into war; responsible enough for your actions to be put to death, or sentenced to life; can be held legally responsible for your own actions, can enter into contracts; can get married without permission; its about time this issue was revisited.

Denise S.
Mandan, ND
8/19 10:08 AM 18 is too low, as some kids that age are still in high school. I would favor lowering it to age 19.

John S.
Mesa, AZ
8/19 9:58 AM Those Presidents need to study more on the effects of drinking at a early age. I know I've been there. They are looking at ways to make their job easier. John S

Source GF Herald Comments. So who else has opinions on this?

Lowering the drinking age will put more drunks on the road. No Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Well than 18 year olds should not be in the miltary then and you can put your life at risk protect yourself from the terrorists...

Anonymous said...

I say that if you have a military I.D. then you can drink at 18, plain and simple...

Anonymous said...

"Lowering the drinking age will put more drunks on the road."

Uh - Nooooo Stupid people drinking and thinking they can drive puts more drunks on the road.

Its NOT the alcohol, guns or drugs that is the enemy here its the misuse of them that causes the problems we have in our society.

No one should drink if they are not mature enough to handle it responsibly...doesn't matter if they are 5 or 500 years old.

Alcohol has helped soothe many babies teething pain when used responsibly but I wouldn't give a bottle of beer to a child...there is the accountability factor involved that many people just don't stop to consider.

"the standoff between 50 police and a motorcycle club"

Didn't happen according to a friend that was working as an officer in Sturgis, SD.

Anonymous said...

The minimum drinking age should be raised to 30.

Anonymous said...

anonymous - that is brought up by greenglass, who would rather believe the Hell's Angels outlaw motorcycle gang than published news reports and also what Sturgis police reported.

Anonymous said...

anon 2:10 pm aug 19. Your friend posing as a officer in Sturgis must have been the cop sleeping in the alley behind "One Eyed Jack Saloon" near garbage cans ! Apparelntly UND and NDSU presidents did not get onboard with the other 100 presidents even though they were asked too. Good for them!!

Anonymous said...

Well greenglass4, there are a number of ND officers that work the street during Rally Week in Sturgis. Some in uniform and some in plain clothes. You don't think they have a big tattoo of their home state on their forehead do you? I know one that's been working there for about 5 years now. He takes vacation from his local law enforcement job to work there. He was there for 10 days and there was no standoff between HA & PD. You need to quit hanging around behind One Eyed Jack's.

Anonymous said...

Illegal drinking is tons more fun than legal drinking. Before it was legal for me I was drunk 3 nights out of the week. That stopped about a month after my 21st....

Seriously..the "forbidden fruit" method of trying to stop excessive underage drinking doesn't really do anything at all.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 11:20, I can literally count all the times I've drank since my 21st birthday (and mind you i'm no longer in my 20s), but would have no clue how often i drank before it was legal.

I don't think that changing the age to 18 is going to cause more drunk driving. That is absolutely absurd, if a person is irresponsible enough to drink and drive I don't think that the legal age to drink is an issue.

Jimmie said...

I vote for lowering the drinking age to 19. While I definitely agree with the "If I can go to war, I should be able to have a drink" mentality, I think that since most 18-year-olds are still in high school, it puts too much burden on the schools and parents to deal with their high school students being able to drink.

I do realize that SOME 19 year olds are in high school, but probably not too terribly many.

Anonymous said...

If Manitoba can handle a 18-yr-old driking age, why can't North Dakota?

Anonymous said...

In Europe the legal drinking age is 16. Maybe if Americans proved themselves to be responsible adults the law here would change...don't see that happening.

Anonymous said...

I'll support lowering the drinking age when we adopt Norway's, or perhaps Saudi Arabia's drunk driving laws.

Anyone heard Scott Hennen's new radio station at 1100 AM? There's a few billboards in town.

Scott Hennen's new station : WZFG-am The Flag is at 1100 on am dial and on line at : www.am1100.tv. The building/office/studio is at 64 Broadway with large windows and outside speakers, it is called "The Eagles Nest". Tough first day last Tuesday his transmitter/tower was hit by lightening out in Sabin, Minn. Several reviews by John Lamb in Fargo Forum. greenglass4

Prohibition works. Many people who would use coke/heroin/ grass etc. don't because it is illegal. Prohibition worked for boos contrary to common beliefs. Large #s didn't drink because it was illegal.

Raise the legal age for drinking to 25 , 30, whatever, and you will decrease drunk driving and save lives. Of course the murder rate will increase because of turf battles by gangs.

I agree with jimmie. Schools don't want hungover students and there are a lot of 18 year old seniors. The guys coming back from Iraq deserve a drink (even though I have never met one who doesn't drink before legal). 19 year olds are just as responsible as 21 year olds. If they aren't responsible by 19 they will never be.

What it really comes down to is proper parenting which starts at a young age... I suppose you could always end up with a demon child (don't want to jinx myself in the future), but I'd like to see the statistics related to parenting situation, etc.

You're actually very wrong; my neighbor is a police officer and he has worked in Sturgis, also there are many different Law Enforcement agencies patroling the Sturgis during the motor cycle rally, FBI, DEA, other Federal Agencies, local, state (ND and other states...)

Anonymous said...

When will the Alerus Center pick up some good concerts?!? UND football just ain't cutting it and Cher sucked. How does the process work to get someone in the alerus?

Anonymous said...

The Alerus make more money on corporate gigs than they would on concerts. Thats why you don't see many concerts going through all that often.

Would you rather take a 10,000 dollar corporate rental. Or put your neck out in the hopes to make 10,000 on a tour to come through?

Corporate is where the Money is at. Big Business will pay major bucks to make their large meetings look cool.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Goon, for making my point ! There may have been many FBI, DEA, and other Federal Law Enforcement in Sturgis Area, but they would not fall asleep in alley ! I asked for directions to one Sturgis Cop : where in Chamber of Commerce (because my car was parked intheir lot) he did not know where building was ! So maybe he wasn't local cop ! He couldn't even find it on city map. He would have been over run at any of the campgrounds. greenglass4

Anonymous said...

But I'll bet he remembered where his car was!

or at least could find the lot where he left his car without asking someone for help.

I'll bet he's posting on some blog somewhere about the dumb SOB that couldn't find the chamber of commerce parking lot.

how can you not find the chamber of commerce in sturgis??

I thought this blog was about Grand Forks NOT Sturgis, SD!!!

I'm guessing this is his first time hearing about/going to Sturgis. That's why he can't stop talking about it.
