Welcome to Grand Forks

As I write this, Senator Barack Obama's plane has either touched down at Grand Forks International Airport or will do so very shortly. From there, he will make his way to Grand Forks' Alerus Center where he will give the keynote address for the North Dakota Democrat-NPL convention. While he is speaking, Senator Hillary Clinton will make her way to this "grand city" where she will also address her supporters.

I have no doubt that the next President of the United States of America will be speaking in Grand Forks tonight. I'm not sure if that leader will be a black man or a white woman, but I feel that either candidate would make a great president and their election would be a historic milestone in our nation's history. Tonight, we will see the future of our country in our own backyard.

Of course, as many of you probably know, there are numerous other events going on in Grand Forks tonight and over the next few days. In all, tens of thousands of people will be attending the various events that, together, are turning this into one of the most historic times in Grand Forks history. Welcome to all who are in Grand Forks for the first time or who are making a return visit.

And again, a very special welcome to the two inspirational individuals who will be addressing our city, our state, and our nation this evening. Welcome to Grand Forks!

McCain will be the next President. Dems haven't realized that they can't traipse across this great country hammering our past, present, and future about how flawed the country is. People don't want the hear that. What kind of a message is that? "This country is flawed in every way, it's not the greatest country like everyone says, it can be changed, I'm the only one who can make that happen". Such B.S.

Yes, Perot got Bubba in. I'm sure he thanked him.

The Republican candidate gets to campaign across America stating quick bullets on why this is the greatest country, and then address areas where there is room for improvement.

The only thing that could blow my theory is the young vote. Who knows if they come out. But, I'm sure they'll be offset by independents and moderate Dems who vote for McCain.

It's my opinion Barrack knows he will never be President, he's just trying to salvage a career as a Civil Rights leader.

Google his pre-election Senate questionaire. It is amazing.

No parental consent for 14 year olds to have an abortion.

ALL manufacture, sale, and posession of firearms should be outlawed.

I don't care what his ethnic background is; he's a flake and pos.

Barack Obama said this today:

"I think it’s important to spread the message that Dr. King’s work is unfinished in places like Indiana and North Dakota."

Hear that, you white dummies? The Almighty said we need us some edu-ma-cation out here in the boonies.

C'mon, Crackers! The Almighty has come to redeem our sins! Let's get our guilt on!

Anonymous said...

"The Almighty said we need us some edu-ma-cation out here in the boonies."

Ummmm....I don't think he meant THAT.

I think he just means that MLK's work is still unfinished, and that as he is going to be in North Dakota, Indiana and Montana today, he will just bring that message to those places today.

There was a beutiful rendition of the National Anthem by students from Grand Forks' own Kelly Elementary. And yes, everyone, stood and placed there hands on their hearts. Dems love America, too. They love it so much that they wont sit idly by and tell the Emperor he has beutiful clothes, when in fact, he's naked.

It's not unpatriotic to point out shortcomings. It's our duty, and will only help the nation get better, no matter who's running the country, Republican or Dem.

Adversity like his own cocaine habits? Adversity like his Atheism-turned-Black-Panther-racism? Adversity like the shady $1 million earmark he secured for his wife's workplace just before she got a $200,000 raise? Adversity like his relationship to domestic terrorists like Bill Ayers?

Yeah, he's a real inspiration.

Im definitely voting for Obama because I dont want to feel safe from those who want to destroy my way of life, I want the Federal Government to redistribute my hard earned income to those who are too lazy to get an education so they can get decent jobs and support themselves and I most definitely want the next President of the United States to have absolutely no experience in relevant politics. I definitely think we should be choosing the next President based on the fact that he's black, or at least hald black.

You don't have to tell your kids that cocaine is OK under any circumstances, but you also don't have to condemn everyone who was wrapped up in a massive cultural ethos in which smoking weed and trying coke was completely acceptable by a wide segment of intelligent, educated Americans who were disenfranchised or disillusioned by the Vietnam War, the late '60s riots, and Watergate. Check out where they are now -- productively employed, not using drugs, and with grown-up children, trying to do what's best for the country they still manage to maintain loyalty to.

It was like "old home" week in Grand Forks ND. On Thursday we are visited by a domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers and then on Friday, one of his friends, Barack Obama.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8630.html friends

"In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn."

Neither Ayers nor the Obama campaign would describe the relationship between the two men. Dr. Young described Obama and Ayers as “friends,” but there’s no evidence their relationship is more than the casual friendship of two men who occupy overlapping Chicago political circles and who served together on the board of a Chicago foundation.

But Obama’s relationship with Ayers is an especially vivid milepost on his rise, in record time, from a local official who unabashedly reflected a very liberal district to the leader of national movement based largely on the claim that he can transcend ideological divides.

This could be a little deep for some, but but if a candidate on the other side of the political spectrum was to associate with the folks Obama has surrounded himself with, there would be a media firestorm like we've never seen before.

As someone stated earlier, "God DAMN America"

May be what he supports, but not going to happen in a bipartisan government. Besides... these issues are so low on the totem pole of importance right now. These are the decisions I have to make when being a moderate. Which issues are most important and which do you think will take precedence under the future administration?

Anonymous said...

Wow...I'm sensing some Republican jealousy...

If you don't like Obama or Clinton, ok fine. We get that. Now actually *support* your argument with someone substantial. Oh wait, there will be rampant abortion, no more guns, he didn't wear the flag lapel pin, he only SAW his father once, and, wow, OH MY GOD, OH NO, HIS MIDDLE NAME IS HUSSEIN!!! RUN!!!!

In ND you get the pleasure of being able to regularly avoid problems such as widespread poverty, you don't really see the negative impact China is having on our country, you don't see many ND jobs being shipped overseas, you don't see families who escaped from Iraq after half their family was killed by a mix of American and anti-American soldiers...if you don't get what I'm trying to say- basically in ND you get to live in this nice little island separated from the rest of the country/world...and that's why it's such a red state (although, last night's turnout and the group of retired military sitting around me made me re-think that). It's time to start looking at the big picture ND.

Anonymous said...

It was a wonderful evening, and I'm glad I went. Both Obama and Clinton were extraordinary speakers, and I came away with renewed hope.

Backtracking on comments:
1. Obama's site does say Grand Forks.
2. The URL someone gave for a site giving the "truth" about Obama--check the source. It's the Daily Mail, which is basically a tabloid in the UK. Not exactly the NY Times. Or even the GF Herald.

Anyway, back to last night. They were great speeches, and my son, who attended with me, asked me a lot of excellent questions, and learned so much from being there.

It was worth that looooong wait outside!

Gee Willikers, Thanks a lot.

And howdya think the 2nd amendment is an "issues are so low on the totem pole of importance right now." that our forefathers put it second in the bill of rights. When is it going to be important? Would that be back when Hillary's husband proposed house to house searches without warrants to remove guns from "the projects?"

"We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the
rights of ordinary Americans. . . . "
Bill Clinton (USA TODAY, 11 March 1993, page 2A)

"You know the one thing that's wrong with this
country? Everyone gets a chance to have their fair
say."
Bill Clinton May 29, 1993

"The Constitution is a radical document... it is the
job of the government to rein in people's rights."
Bill Clinton on MTV - 1992

"The most effective means of fighting crime in the
United States is to outlaw the possession of any type
of firearm by the civilian populace."
Janet Reno, Speaking at a B'nai B'rith Meeting,
Fort Lauterdale, FL, 1991

And there's a whole bunch more.

Now who's gettin'the freakin "big picture ND?"

How did you explain to your son that in one instance Obama says those that make more money than you do are evil and then in the next breath says he will help you make more money by taking it away from someone else?

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, did your son ask for a definition of 'warmonger" when Ed Schultz described John McCain??

Anonymous said...

I'm always amazed by the variety of interpretations people can have of the exact same words... each party hears what they want to hear.

Anonymous said...

I think the only place you really need a gun is either out of town for legal hunting purposes, or one or two in your home for personal protection. However, I do believe in a screening process to keep guns away from the wrong people, and I do believe in laws that punish people who did not keep their weapons under a reasonable amount of lock-and-key, and as a result others were able to obtain them.

The hunter with his rifle or shotgun will be the very last to have his firearm taken away, and nobody's going to do that in the foreseeable future. It's the "gangbangers" in the cities that have been the modern reason for gun control in the first place (take a visit to south central LA or East St. Louis to see for yourself) ...so shouldn't the law-abiding hunter have no problem with a law like that and a screening process? I don't...and on that note I'm going to go target shooting for a little while before the snow hits tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

variety of interpretations?

How do YOU interpret "warmonger"?

How do YOU interpret "typical white person"?

How do YOU interpret "We're going to have to take things away from you for the common good."

I don't know, I think those are kind of inflammatory.

The actual text of the 2nd Amendment defines the "right to bear Arms" as a means to arm the civil militias, without actually having to provide the people with weapons, in order to secure the freedom and safety of the States from England prior to the Revolution. It nowhere says anything about your right to own weapons for hunting, personal protection, etc. -jt

In principle, universal health care sounds like a great idea and a moral obligation like Hilldawg suggested... ASSUMING everyone is a great citizen and works their butt off.
Unfortunately, universal healthcare has weaknesses... what about those that slack off and don't do jack. (live off welfare etc.).

Another issue is what is covered? Why should tax payers pay for people that as an example... smoke and then contract lung cancer?

Anonymous said...

""A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

In the rest of the Bill of Rights, the phrase "the people" has been interpreted by the Supreme Court to mean the general population. There is no reason to believe the phrase means anything different in the Second Amendment. Thomas Jefferson said "the people" is everybody but politicians.

Anonymous said...

These much wiser gentleman can state it way better than I:

"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." - George Mason, during Virginia's Convention to Ratify the Constitution (1788).

"No free man shall ever be de-barred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain their right to keep and bear arms is as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government." - Thomas Jefferson

"The said constitution shall never be construed to authorize congress to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms." - Samuel Adams(not the beer guy)

"Americans need never fear their government because of the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation." - James Madison

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." - Richard Henry Lee, Founding Father

"Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property . . . Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them." - Thomas Paine, Thoughts on Defensive War (1775).

tubbabutta said...

According to that definition of the preamble, the "people" are considered a collective and (up until recently) federal courts have viewed and interpreted the amendment as a "collective right" to bear arms necessary for the security of a free state, not for individuals' benefit. 9 of the 11 U.S. Court of Appeals still use the "collective rights" model opposed to the "individual rights" model

tubbabutta said...

I'm not trying to argue about this, because it truly is up to interpretation (and I don't necessarily feel overly strongly one way or the other). We can quote Federalists/Anti-Federalists all night, but in the end we will all still have our views and opinions that fit our mores. The only reason that I got into this discussion is because I truly believe that your right to bear arms will never be repealed or in jeopardy, no matter who is in office. We have WAY bigger issues to consider these days my friend. Cheers, jt

Anonymous said...

Oh my gosh. Thanks for the reminder of why I have forgone politics for all these years. This is nearly as bad as people arguing about religion. Talk about a lot of hot air and extremist BS. Frankly, if anyone voted for Bush and STILL believes he is doing well in office, you ought to have your head examined. I want to believe that Americans will do the right thing come November, but I am starting to worry about the ignorance of America when I read comments like some in this thread. I have always been an Independent, but Bush has made a Democrat out of me. And last night was a pretty exciting one for Grand Forks. Hillary's speech blew Obama's out of the water with or without fact checking. I could tell similar stories that I KNOW to be true because they've happened to people I know. Even fiction, if that's what the anecdote proves to be, can tell the truth.

Anonymous said...

"so you're trying to say nothing like that ever happens?? "

No, I'm not trying to imply that it never happens. I just don't like the idea of candidates using sad stories as a way to win votes. She should be able to get her facts straight. That moment in her speech was very poignant...almost effective and knowing now that half of it is a lie puts a huge blemish on her campaign, in my eyes. She lies to win votes. Not the first time it's happened. And sadly, I don't think she has to get people to agree with her healthcare plan by using theatrics.

Anonymous said...

For what it's worth, when the republican party sent a request for a donation I returned it with a note that said "Until you guys get your head out of your ass, the little I have to give will go the NRA.

Anonymous said...

This is why people didn't discuss politics with others "back in the day". People become ridiculous and ignorant. Everyone hears what they want to hear and become angry and defensive when they hear things they disagree with. I think everyone should stand up for what they believe, but why can't anyone understand that everyone is not going to agree with them?

I'm an independent going for Obama. At the same time if Hillary is in the running I will probably vote for McCain. Why doesn't everyone look at both sides? There will never be 1 candidate who makes everyone happy on both sides (republican/democratic).

If Hillary or Barack is elected president it will be historic for obvious reasons. At the same time I don't feel people will vote for them just because they are black or a woman. It just happens to be that they are black or a woman.

I've had friends tell me they are voting for McCain because he is a POW. Really? That's your reason?? That's as lame as voting because someone is black or a woman.

I think this is an amazing presidential race that can either bring the country together or rip it apart because certain people are not ready to have a country that is truly run democratically without favors given to those who do not need them.

Anonymous said...

So Hillary made another mistatement? She must have mis-remembered like Roger Clemens, although I would think that shaking hands with kids is a far cry from dealing with sniper fire. I guess I don't understand people who can have their minds changed by speeches, because in the end for the mostpart, you either have convictions that one party caters to, or you are wandering aimlessly.

Anonymous said...

What I heard in the speeches the most is 180 degrees from JFK's great speech. They are basically saying Ask not what you can do for your country, but what your country can do for you. Doesn't everyone want teachers to be paid more? The question is who is going to pay for all of this? And as for the government getting involved in healthcare, they pay $1000 for a hammer for goodness sake. As for being a uniter, I am so sick of people ripping on people paying the majority of taxes in this country, then being told they are being favored. Seems like devisive politics as usual to me.

Here's something interesting that was said during the delegate's discussion on Saturday:

Friday night, there were more people in favor of voting for a Democratic president at the Alreus Center in Grand Forks than were at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2006.

Are you really better off than you were eight years ago?

Anonymous said...

No, I hardly know anyone who's better off now than they were 8 years ago. And the sad part is the outlook for the future is just as bad...Dubya had the ball in his court but he fudged that up way too much.

As far as the Clinton hospital story- it's no worse that Bush telling us stories of if he isn't elected, it's immediate and serious terrorist destruction...atleast Clinton had her story grounded in a bit more truth.

Anonymous said...

Clinton was repeating a story that was told to her by the host of a gathering in Ohio. Probably should have checked her facts. I work in healthcare in the area. People needing referral to Mayo Clinic for specialty care often asked for a down payment up front if they are not insured. And most of them need life sustaining treatment. So it does happen.

I just check some polls Between McCain Obama and Clinton. All pretty close with a slight lead for McCail in all of them. Grand Forks life guy assumes the US is ready for a Black man or a Woman to be President. Are we? I'll bet Carl Rove is licking his chops for either of them. I personially think ther is still alot of racism in the US AND Obama will struggle in November. That's why I suppport Hillary. And besides she has Bill who will be in the White House with her. Smartest President in many years.

When President Clinton left office:

1- Oil was $20.00 a barrel

2- The budget was balanced

3- There was a surplus of money in the treasury.

Say what you will about his personal habits, there are very few people who wouldn't want even one of those factors still in place today. Listen - this fall, whoever wins the election will face tasks that most seasoned presidents would rather not take on. Every American is trying to make their family cash flow, and more and more are finding their salaries not up to the task. The answer from the Republicans: she's a woman and he's black. They're going to need much more horsepower than that to get the job done in November.

Anonymous said...

Oraotr, you talk about having enough horsepower. Believe me the republicans will come up with something. They always do. And they'll find a way to get middle class americans to vote against there own best interest. Or have the middle class finially had enough. It's going to be very interesting. It's slso very interesting to me to see McCain get there nomination. It tells me the Republicans know by the mood of the American people he is the only one of them who stands a chance in November. Most Repubs I know hate McCain. How did he get the nomination? Was it fixed? I would put nothing past Carl Rove and the rest of the dirty tricksters.

Anonymous said...

Come on. Karl Rove has NOTHING to do with McCain's pre-emptive nomination.

McCain has enjoyed his place in the process by way of the AARP, you know, the people who actually vote in every election?

"The answer from the Republicans: she's a woman and he's black."

BS. The Republican answer so far has been "She's a Socialist and he's totally unqualified."

BTW, I love the way Liberals have attempted to hijack the Civil Rights platform from the Republicans, it's priceless. Democrats have some BAD skeletons in their closet when it comes to race relations, and now they come at the subject as if they INVENTED civil rights?! HA!

Read history. Republicans have LOOONG championed Civil Rights. Charlton Heston is a perfect example of that.

We don't disagree with Obama because he's black, or even because he's a Democrat. We disagree with him because he's all talk and no action. Look at his (short) record. Look at his associations. Look at the way he handles himself during crisis.

Good God, even the people in his OWN campaign disagree with him on how to handle Iraq.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Clow I havn't talked to that many Republicans about McCain just a hand full. About everyone said don't like him not conservative enough for me. Or he went against the tax cuts. Every Conservative talk show I listen to they say nothing good about McCain. How about you was McCain your choice? So the AARP controlls the Republican party? ya right.I do give you alot of crediit for posting your name though.

Anonymous said...

"How about you was McCain your choice?"

He was in 2000. As for THIS election? Alright, I'll bite the bullet and take the ridicule for this one...I was officially signed with Fred Thompson's campaign down here. There, I admitted it. Let fly the stones! ;)

I am not really overjoyed at McCain's nomination, but he's the best choice I have now. I would MUCH rather have seen Colin Powell in this.

"So the AARP controls the Republican party?"

Nope. The AARP controls ELECTIONS. No matter WHAT party they collectively vote for. You can't deny that the population over 50 in this country are the most politically active. God bless them for that.

I genuinely hope MY generation will start gearing that way soon. Too many people my age don't care one way or another. Sure, they put bumper stickers on their cars and can debate the issues intelligently, but on Election Day you ask them who they voted for and half will say "Today was Election Day? Man, I forgot. Where do I even vote anyway?"

Anonymous said...

Kelly thanks for being honest. Do you even know if any of your Republican friends who supported McCain? I doubt it. I just don't see the support for him. But he keeps winning. But maybe this is just mindless babble. Who really controls us. Theres an old saying follow the money. I think they love it when us peaons argue back and forth. Nobdy is watching the crooks.

Anonymous said...

"Do you even know if any of your Republican friends who supported McCain?"

Actually, I know of quite a few who did. But, to be totally forthright, as an actor, I don't HAVE that many Republican friends!

I'm pretty involved in the Party down here in Tampa, and it seemed a lot of them were going for McCain. Tampa is a military city. We have MacDill Air Force Base, aka CENTCOM, here in town, so it's pretty Pro-Iraq around here.

"Who really controls us."

If he was running for dog catcher, you could overlook gaffes like that, but he's running for frickin' Commander in Chief!

And will someone please tell me why McCain won't support the new GI bill, while Democratic "troop-haters" Obama and Clinton are signers on the bill?

Anonymous said...

What is the difference between a piece of Shiite and a Sunni day?

I see you are just passing on the Democratic talking points sent to you be Howie Dean:

Dear Kool-aid drinker,

John McCain is so wrong on Iraq, he can’t even get the basic facts about the situation on the ground correct.

Today, as he was questioning Gen. David Petraeus, he again confused the difference between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

At least five times as a candidate John McCain has stated that Iran (a Shiite nation) is supporting Al-Qaeda (a Sunni group) in Iraq. This is not some minor mistake, but a significant gaffe. He clearly does not understand the sensitive political dynamics in that region of the world.

What’s worse is that he’s done it at important times when you’d expect him to be at his best—he did it today in the Senate while questioning the commander of American forces in Iraq, and he did it on a recent trip to the Middle East.

If John McCain can’t remember such a simple fact at crucial times, how will he be able to do it as President?

We have to stop John McCain from taking control of the White House, and stop him from taking over George Bush’s war in Iraq. Can you write a letter to the editor of your local paper letting voters in your area know just how confused John McCain is?

http://www.democrats.org/gaffes

Once is misspeaking—five times is a dangerous lack of understanding. John McCain so badly misunderstands Iraq that he’s content to stay there for 100 years, something he’s said multiple times. He has also failed to explain how he would pay for a war that is now costing you and me $12 billion each month—money we could be using to help our economy here at home.

John McCain wants us to believe that his decades of foreign policy experience make him the natural choice to lead our nation at war with terrorists.

We just can’t afford someone who just doesn’t understand Iraq—it’s too dangerous.

Thanks for your support.

Howard Dean

"While the crowd was indeed diverse, some students at the event questioned the practices of Mrs. Obama’s event coordinators, who handpicked the crowd sitting behind Mrs. Obama. The Tartan’s correspondents observed one event coordinator say to another, “Get me more white people, we need more white people.” To an Asian girl sitting in the back row, one coordinator said, “We’re moving you, sorry. It’s going to look so pretty, though.” "

I did NOT receive Howard Dean's talking points, nor do I need them, because anyone with half a brain can figure out that McBush does not belong in the White House.

And, in fact, your response is typical of Republicans, who have nothing new to add to the discussion. Instead of pointing out where you found Dean's logic to be flawed, you chose to attack the blogger.

Look for that tactic to be used frequently throughout the campaign, because the overwhelming majority of the American people prefer the Dems positions on issues, so that leaves them with their one hope - destroy the messenger.

You weren't attacked, your message was attacked. Democrats, always the victim.

Republicans like to tout themselves as the party strong national defense. Most people don't know this but more money was spent by Ken Starr going after Bill Clinton than Bush and the Republican congress spent to investigate 9-11. Where are these peoples priorities? It's no wonder they lost control of congress. And people were just plane sick of all the debt.

How can McCain and the Bush White House claim to support the troops and not support the new GI bill? They're eager to send our soldiers into harm's way, but have no use for them when they return. Shameful!

So? More money was spent on Watergate than the Warren Commission. Dems play politics too, you know.

THE CLINTON IMPEACHMENT WAS NOTHING BUT A PAYBACK FOR NIXON. HE DID LIE UNDEROATH. COMMON SENCE WAS NEVER PUT INTO PLAY HERE. WHAT YOU LIE ABOUT SHOULD BE PUT INTO CONSIDERATION. LIEING ABOUT SEX SHOULD NEVER CARRY THE HARSHEST PUNISHMENT. IF I FOUND OUT BUSH LIED UNDER OATH ABOUT AN AFFAIR WOULD I THINK HE SHOULD BE INPEACHED. HELL NO.

He was impeached for lying under oath, not for having sex. Poor Democrats, always the victim.
