Open Thread #65

Sorry guys...I've been out of town for the past few days.

maybe we should give credit where credit is due. After a one-sided article that made the GFPD sound pretty bad in the Herald (possibly rightfully so, but I don't think anybody REALLY knows all the details yet) - they bounce back with a quick and what sounds like a good arrest for attempted murder in that weekend stabbing case. Sounds as though they also handled a pretty sensitive case with EERC director and state senator/county commisioner pretty well... just a thought that we don't all have to be making negative comments like were on here and the Herald site last week.

I like Olive Garden.

I like Gerald Groenewold.

I like Marilyn Hagerty.

I sorta like Greenglass4.

I don't like domestic violence.

Positive enough?

Anonymous said...

I wasn't looking for a eutopian response. Being positive with the police department in fact means admitting we live in a place that is far from a eutopia. (I was speaking directly about the comments generalized to all police officers and the GFPD) You like Gerald Groenewold? Too bad, I am guessing most don't (or shouldn't)after learning about the man's character!

Stabbing Suspect Arrested - COMMENTS

Here is an opportunity to praise the police. If comments were enabled on this article by the Herald, I think it would add some balance.

I believe readers should be able to comment on everything in the news, including obituaries! More freedom, more speech, more thought, more education.

More opinions, more rumors, more gossip, more "toughguy" libelous mouthing off from the safety of an anonymous moniker, more general stupidity.

Yeah, we DEFINATELY need to have the ability to comment on EVERYTHING in the news.

Get a blog if you feel the need to give your opinion on everything.

Too funny ! All the positive comments. And thanks to the"word cop" for corrections. I agree let comments flow on news articles, more freedom, free speech, free thought, and education. By the way lets include opinions, rumors, and gossip, I don't like either one of our "power couple" Connie or Gerry, a couple of whiners, if you ask me. Connie is a tough cookie, maybe she is the agressor ! A novel thought, greenglass4.

Anonymous said...

If you ever get a chance, look at the Bismarck Tribune online ... they comment on almost everything there and it is terrible how negative and immature and uneducated the comments are. I'm glad the Herald isn't set up like that.

Anonymous said...

"maybe she is the agressor"

Funny you should bring that up. See voting record for Constance Triplett on this issue:
http://tinyurl.com/ypo6kf

2007 HB 1238 Domestic Violence Bill regarding law enforcement shall consider the predominate aggressor in cases of domestic violence.

Constance Triplett voted against adding the predominate aggressor language to NDCC 14-07.1-01, but it passed anyway.

Anonymous said...

yeah, really funny...lets blame the victim in a domestic violence case...I would certainly expect that from greenglass (right Gary?) but from others? Wow!

Anonymous said...

How does considering predominate aggressors "blame the victim"?

Anonymous said...

The County Commissioner attempts to hide her political doings from the media. Then, when it benefits her, she turns into chatty Cathy to get back at her husband. What an expose of her true charcater. Give it up, get a divorce, pick up the pieces and move on!

Anonymous said...

I wonder how many more wife beaters we have reading this site?

Anonymous said...

I wonder how many of us posting comments over the past few days were actually at the location and saw with our own eyes where the police allegedly abused someone when they were stopped or were actually in Connie Triplett's house and saw with our own eyes what happened in that incident? What was that? None of us where there and have first hand knowledge of what took place? Maybe we should all just leave the second guessing and personal opinions to those who don't live in glass houses...

Anonymous said...

We shouldn't "blame" anyone. This is a sad situation involving two significant and wonderful people in GFK. We are a better place because of both of them.
What we should do is give both of them our prayers, or "thoughts" if that is your way. Neither need any negative energy from any of us.

I love the GF bus system. It takes me where I want to go. For not much money with a smart pass.

THANKS for a decent bus system and pretty cool drivers!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm glad to hear you and the two other riders of the city bus system are happy with the service. For what it costs you should be...

Anonymous said...

^^ what a whiner.

Have you ridden it? Or are you too busy trying to squeeze out an extra mile/hour of speed in the posh luxury of your comfy autostarted truck, blaring tunes all the while.

Wake up.

Cities need public transportation, and GF does great with what it has. Is this a city or your own private isolationist, tax-free oasis?

Get a clue and use public transportation occasionally at least. I have most often found that city dwellers who never use public transportation are usually those who shiver with fear at the thought of actually having to interact with fellow community members in an unfamiliar setting. Is that you?

Anonymous said...

I tend to agree about the city bus. It's a nice fall back. I recently left my lights on in my car and drained the battery (I know, what a dunce) No one had jumper cables handy and I needed to get home to pick up my daughter at school, which is within walking distance from my home. I simply walked two blocks to the city transit hub, jumped on, paid my fee and the bus took me to within feet of my front door. Others need the bus all the time; I like the fact that it is there when I need it, since my tax money supports it. Oh, btw, there were 10 others on the bus with me at 2:30 p.m. on a Friday.

Anonymous said...

I think, like in any city, the city buses are packed when people are going to work and school or when they are coming home in late afternoons and evenings. The empty buses arguement that the anti-public transit crowd likes to drag out from time to time are those that run in the middle of the day. They are not empty by a long shot, as I ride them frequently, but they are not nearly as full as they are during the rush hours.

Anonymous said...

I heard a rumor that Grand Forks City Accountant, John Schmisek is running for county commissioner. City government want to take over the county??

Anonymous said...

Do buses run in EGF? Either I'm an idiot or they don't. I think having a couple different stops in EGF would be great. I know I would use it.

Anonymous said...

well sorry, you are an idiot...they run and make several stops in EGF. Check it out.

Anonymous said...

Terry B was correct in his claim that the buses run empty, except for the driver. The reason for paint on the windows and the ads is to hide the fact of no passengers. New story on the "power couple" more investigative work on Connie and her leg record. Were in the heck is CVIC when you need them, says Connie to Hubby Gerry. greenglass4

Anonymous said...

Gary/greenglass-you should know a lot about CVIC now shouldn't you? Shame on you.

Anonymous said...

"Do buses run in EGF?",

'bout halfway down on the left side.

"The reason for paint on the windows and the ads is to hide the fact of no passengers."

LoL. Is your tinfoil hat channeling aliens as well? :-) You don't suppose that acquiring non-fare revenue might have something to do with it?

BTW... busses in most major cities also use the ads on windows idea.

I've taken the bus many times at various times of the day, and I know I've never seen it empty. UND's Student Government sponsors free rides for UND students, so it's how those of us who have car troubles or no car at all can still get around town.

Anyone else going to Carmina Burana tomorrow at the Fritz? I can't wait, it's going to be one heck of a show!

Received in inter-campus mail:

From: und.announce@und.nodak.edu
Subject: Statement from Gerald Groenewold

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The news media has recently reported on a personal family matter regarding my wife, Connie, and me. Because of our positions in the community, the media has given this situation considerable attention. It has been suggested that this media attention has caused embarrassment to the UND community. In response to that suggestion, I feel compelled to provide a few comments regarding this situation.

Without going into detail, I would first point out that this is a personal issue and not an employment issue. I am well known for my intense personality, which sometimes contributes to misunderstandings. I am committed to working to remedy that situation. To the extent that this issue has caused discomfort to anyone in the University community and our many friends and colleagues, I offer my sincere apology.

Gerry Groenewold

Director, Energy and Environmental Research Center

RE: EERC Director Gerald Groenewold. Is this a personal issue, public issue, or employment issue ? In new article it is reported the "Power Couple " have no contact ie restraining order for Connie, also Connie had a black eye ! Did she hit the floor or door knob ? UND Pres K should suspend him for assult ! Did he not suspend hockey coach for
"the finger" . This may be employment issue ! Embarrassment to UND and EERC. Plus 50 guns of Gerry have been seized by GF Police and Sheriff. greenglass4.

Anonymous said...

If your going to rant you need to learn how to spell. Proper sentence structure wouldn't kill you either...

Anonymous said...

greenglass-Was it an employment issue when you got in legal problems for a much more serious and abhorrent crime involving a family member? Knock of the sensational headlines. We all live in glass houses, no pun intended. The guy needs help and I trust his employer will encourage and support him if he seeks and accepts help.

Are GFG and Ryan Schuster one and the same? Why do they end their blog postings the same way/style? Why have all the breaking business tidbits now gone over to Biz Buzz? Why? ;)

Anonymous said...

Do you have a problem with it being over at Biz Buzz? Just asking. No, Shuster and GFG are different people. I usually check both blogs, so it's not a big issue for me.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry about the buses. Soon we'll all be travelling on the previously announced monorail. I am sure they will be starting it any day now...

Anonymous said...

That monorail was never unvieled as a guarantee...just a few people's vision for tomorrow. It was more symbolic than anything else, that's how I took it. If you took it as anything more than that, I want what you're smoking. A monorail, pshaw!LOL!

Anonymous said...

Yay for support of the bus system, and ditto the great bus drivers. There are a couple that seem to always be grumpy, but the friendly ones make up for it. A lot of mentally-handicapped people use the city bus, and that puts people off -- Isn't that shameful? Someone wrote an article in UND's Dakota Student paper about how other people on the bus were creepy... Way to go, discriminating and ignorant UND student.

Does anyone know if Denny's has wifi yet?

Forget Terry Bjerke, is anyone as sick of Marhula as I am. This guy will run for anything. Good thing we don't elect a dog catcher!
