Denny's is now open! went by there at about 4 pm and they looked pretty busy!!!

Great News ! Denny's is open. What a deal. Lets celebrate. Grand Forks has finally arrived. Yippee. greenglass4.

WTF? Denny's has been open for about 30 years now?? Not sure if this is some kind of joke, but they are always busy around 4:00. That's when all the old-timers head over for their afternoon bump. But it's smokey as hell in there. And dark. but the lady bartender is a good 'ol gal and she is always quick with a hello and a smile that makes you feel like you're one of the regulars. The jukebox ain't much to brag about but the dart boards are top shelf.

Not Denny's the tavern, but Denny's the restaurant. If you weren't intent on just going to the bar, you might see it down there on 32nd!

Boo!

You tried to come off as an old clueless coot, but your "WTF" gave you away.

Why'd you delete my previous comment GrandForksGuy? Heaven forbid someone makes fun of your buddies at the Herald. Lovin' the censorship. Keep it up, which I'm sure you will.

Anonymous said...

jg, what was the topic of the comment? Just wondering?

People need to realize, The Herald is not primarily a newspaper. They are simply a broken business entity scrambling to survive and protect their large real estate investment.

Has anyone heard anything recently about the "Shops at Aurora" strip mall? Is it under construction? Have they found any tenants yet?

Anonymous said...

Matt, you're a tough grader. B- ?. Dang. You're right about the "WTF" though. I should have left that out.

I'm going up to Winnipeg this week and I'll be headed back on Friday. I've heard rumors that the border crossing can take a really long time on Fridays and Sundays when the shoppers are coming through. Does anyone know if this is true, and the times to avoid it? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

AKM- I haven't heard anything specific about border crossing times, but I imagine it would be busier coming south on Friday, and north on Sunday. Most of the shopper traffic is Canadian so you'll probably be safe.

I wonder if you tip them, put clothes back on the rack, and clean up your table when you're finished eating if they will accuse you of being a rude yankee? LOL. Juuuuust kidding.

The Canadian loonie is valued under a dollar again.

Won't be long and we'll all long for the days when we could bash the influx of our Canadian neighbors.

I am a displaced nodak to texas and will be coming back for my wifes 20th reunion in aug. I was just wondering if some of our old digs are still there. I know that the john barley corn is closed and heard that the shangri la was closing, what about sensations, the down under, the red pepper, fat alberts, mexican village? It has been about 5 years since we have been back.

Anonymous said...

Fat Alberts, Red Pepper, and Mexican Village still exist.

Anonymous said...

The Down Under Pub still exists also. Long live $1.50 pitchers of Keystone Light every Friday!!!!

what no more quarter taps? how different has the town gotten since the flood?

GRAND FORKS NEEDS A STRIP CLUB...I REPEAT GRAND FORKS NEEDS A STRIP CLUB...TIRED OF DRIVING DRUNK TO THE ONE IN SHELLY.

Anonymous said...

Is the one in Shelly still open? Does it do good business? I find that hard to imagine in a small town.

Anonymous said...

east grand forks had a strip club it was called the blue moose but they shut that down pretty fast

Anonymous said...

Anyone else hear that At&T is coming to Grand Forks??

Anonymous said...

Does anyone else miss the girls from the good old Plainsman Motel? Twenty bucks a crack. It was a great deal.

Anonymous said...

Sensations is also open, but only occasionally for tribute bands, etc. usually during the school season. For the strip bar guru, I heard there is a topless bar opening/open? in Grafton...but please don't drive drunk to either one...that is just plain stupid..Bring a sober friend and give him 20 bucks to "spend"...way smarter all around.

The economic rescue package bottomed out rather quickly: from Bush's bravado suggestion of $800 to the more obvious $300.
Even in GFKS, three hundred dollars doesn't buy a lot of anything.

Anonymous said...

Yes, $800 would be better than $300, but I'll still take it...

$300 would pay for my utilities this month.

Anonymous said...

"Anyone else hear that At&T is coming to Grand Forks?"

What do you mean "coming to GF?" As in bringing new jobs?

Anonymous said...

he ment as in cell service.

Anonymous said...

FYI - when looking for Fat Alberts make sure you look under Slap Shot Pizza - they own it now and it isn't in the old location.

and as for the "The economic rescue package bottomed out rather quickly: from Bush's bravado suggestion of $800 to the more obvious $300" Serously! its essentially FREE MONEY why are you complaining? When was the last time someone just gave you $300?

Anonymous said...

Free money that should further devalue the dollar? This seems like a bandaid on an open chest wound.

The thing that will help the economy the most? That's easy, the countdown until inauguration day is under a year. FINALLY.

Anonymous said...

Are you implying Dems will help the economy?
You're an idiot.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the information I am looking forward to seeing the old stomping grounds again

Anonymous said...

"Are you implying Dems will help the economy? You're an idiot."

Hey, who got us into this mess in the first place?

And you're calling ME an idiot?! *L*

Anonymous said...

Oh please ... not political talk on here too ... please no ... we're inundated with politics everywhere ... can't we talk about other stuff here!?!?!?!

Anonymous said...

What we need is a public works bill that will repair our aging and decrepit infrastructure, which has been ignored for almost 50 years. That'll create jobs and get us back on our feet again. Otherwise I'm afraid we're in for more I-35-type disasters.

And as long as this is an open thread and no one is abusive, "politics" is just as valid as any other topic. Unless you'd rather talk about the napkins at Denny's.

Anyone know where that 100-150 billion dollar economic package is coming from? A little bird told me that the Federal Government doesn't actually have any money, and that they are taking out a 100-150 billion dollar 'loan', probably from China, to cover the package.

That 'free money' is coming out of your pocket. Bush is making a $300 loan in *your name*, begging you to blow the money on shit you don't need (money which will line the pockets of the CEO of whatever big box retailer you blew your loan at), and once the economy *really* falls to pieces, you'll be paying that loan back in spades...

Wait, I'm wrong. You won't be paying the loan back, because you won't have a job.

No problem. Your kids will take care of it. Or mine. Really, who gives a rip. This plasma tv is awesome.

Goofy Governor Ventura once sent out a rebate that had people raving. Then the economy tanked and the people who thought he was a breath of fresh air realized how stinky he was. Sure I'd like a rebate. Problem is-most people should pay down their debt, which is not the the government's hope. They want us to spend like drunken sailors to stimulate the economy.

Anonymous said...

Want to correct the problem of the economy? Reverse the trade deficit. You can see this problem daily in Fargo. Containers are loaded with goods in China, get shipped by boat to Seattle, unloaded onto trains and brought to big centers for distribution, around here it's usually Chicago (via Fargo). The trains are usually 100% full going to Chicago, but very empty coming back. Watch and read-

Like it or not, the days of the USA being top-dog are numbered unless something drastic changes.

The middle class is being decimated by the global economy. If you can pay people in Malaysia or China or Vietnam a small fraction of what you'd pay them here, you shouldn't be surprised when that's where the jobs go. As a result there's downward pressure on wages in all of the developed world. You may be able to buy jeans for $9 at Wal-Mart, but you may not be able to afford them because you're out of work. And the investment class just keeps getting richer. Dickens anyone?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the elementary information. Did you forget to add your solutions for the poor downtrodden?

Let me guess, government.

Anonymous said...

Well, obviously even the most "elementary information" is being ignored by this president and Congress, so a tutorial might be in order. Thanks for the idea.

Anonymous said...

Quite seriously: how has the current president (and his arrogant second-in-command, for that matter) escaped impeachment?

Anyone have any thoughts regarding that?

Anonymous said...

Luck? Apathy?

Anonymous said...

...Blind devotion from others in his party.

Hey - I think the economic stimulous package is a terrible idea. We're 9.3 Trillion dollars in debt. Where are we getting the money to refund taxes?

As a farmer, a low value of the dollar really helps me out, but I'm proud to have lower middle class friends. This package will help in the short term, but in the end it will cause way more damage than it prevents. I think its time to let the US economy fall apart, and then we can start to pick up the pieces. It's time for all Americans to make some horrible decisions, and I question if we have the ability as a country to come together and try to save ourselves.

Anonymous said...

Like Bill or not (and I admit I've grown tired of his behavior on his wife's campaign trail), he left the office without a debt.

It doesn't speak well for the people of a country that would continue to blindly follow a doofus who keeps borrowing to compensate for his bad choices.

Frankly, I'm a bit frightened when I think of what our choices are nowadays.
