What should we talk about?

I know it has been said before but the Columbia Mall sure needs a shot in the arm. Minot's mall kicks butt to West Acres and Columbia Mall.

Anonymous said...

Minot's mall rocks, with a newly expanded Scheels, a nice multiplex, an attached Barnes and Noble and a real food court, an attached hotel with waterpark and Oh, and Target!

Anonymous said...

They should tear down the old Target, and use the area to build a free standing store (not to mention, use some of the empty parking lot space that they don't need). I see they are also trying to sell the land north of Sears...good luck. Nobody would see the store hidden behind the mall (just like the old Best mall).

GFG, Maybe a possible story blog would be taxi service in town. I went to college here, moved away for a couple of years and then moved back. In the last two years, I've seen new taxi service by Red, White, and Blue shuttle service and City Cab Taxi service. Of course, there is still the old standby of Nodak and Grand Forks taxi. Is there a reason for the new companies? Are they any good? I've never read anything about them in the Herald. Is there that much of a demand for taxi service? Any ideas?

Jess said...

Columbia Mall really needs to do something with the Target space and the empty parking lot behind it. It's time to expand. They are losing out on a lot of potential revenue by leaving the old Target store empty.

Regarding taxi cab service, I would just like to give HUGE kudos to NoDak Cab for their CAB Crawler service. For those unfamiliar, it is a service that provides UND students with a $1 cab ride anywhere in GF/EGF. I think it's really great that they would agree to do this, since drunk driving is a huge problem in the area. I'm sure there have been many times in the past where people have (unacceptably) decided to drive home drunk because they want to save money on a taxi ride, but with this service there's no excuse to wait for a cab and get to where you're going safely.

I'm not being paid by NoDak to say this stuff either, I'm just a UND student who makes good use of this service every weekend...Anything to keep drunk drivers off the road is good in my book.

Anonymous said...

Taxi services in the daytime may not be in high demand, but they keep very busy after GF bar closing at 2am. Whenever we've needed a cab at the end of a night out on the town, we've waited on average about an hour.

Anonymous said...

The $1 cab service is a very good idea. My understanding is that its underwritten by UND's student government.

From what I understand, Columbia Mall doesn't own the former Target space. Target still owns it. If that's the case, you can see why it's sitting empty...Target doesn't want one of their competitors building into the mall.

Anonymous said...

I believe the mall does own the Target space, but Target only sold it if the space were used for a non-competitor. I agree the mall needs to find something for that spot. The mall in Minot still works because the owners have constantly put money into it. Malls in general are a dying breed... West Acres, Columbia Mall, and even Kirkwood in Bismarck are seeing decreases in tenants. If the mall can't lease that space, then tear it down and find something different. A hotel, indoor park, Hobby Lobby, whatever will draw people.

The mall in Minot works because its "big box" stores are attached. They were afraid to build AWAY from the mall. In larger towns, like GF and Fargo, and Twin Citiies you'll find the Old Navys, Best Buys and Bed Bath and Beyonds as stand-alones or anchoring their own "marketplace."

Anonymous said...

The mall in Minot works because it is the only place to go in Minot.
I used to live there.

is there a strip club in Minot?

The Yellow Rose IN minot used to have strippers from what I have been told.

Here's a little rant. I went to Super Target in Grand Forks today. The place was packed to the rafters with people. They have 32 check out lines and 8 of them were open. I stood in line for 20 minutes before checking out. Once I did get there a good 5 minutes of the checkout experiance was the clerk asking if I wanted to save 10% with a Target credit card. I said no, she persisted. I got short with her and left. I went to McDonalds a little later in the day and while going through the drive thru was asked if I wanted to donate to the Ronald McDonald house. What's with all the asking to save, asking to donate this, that and the other? All I want is my stuff without having to listen to a sales pitch! I feel better now that I have exercised those demons.

Anonymous said...

Drove by the future Country Inn Hotel. Looks like a 4 storey building. A bit out of the way though. They should have built next to the mall (old Target spot, or take up some of the parking lot). I guess it will be quiet next to the funeral home they will be beside.

Anonymous said...

A bit of the way? I take it you really do mean a bit, since it's a whopping block off of 32nd avenue and within easy walking distance to the Menards strip mall and Dennys.

Anonymous said...

There definetely needs to b a change at the stores lately. I went to kohls yesterday not long after they opened and stood in line for 20 mins just to buy one shirt, that was the 3rd time I had been there so I decided to just suck it up and wait this time. Gordmans is the same way lately. Then again now that I think about it with Gordmans and Kohls all of the checkouts are open its just a matter of more people out shopping I guess.

Anonymous said...

I think WalMArt has the crappiest lines, I have waited over 30 minutes numerous times, over the last 3 months when I have beeen shopping there. Not only that the cases in the deli are usually empty, because they dont have enough people to make the sandwiches! Which is pathetic, if you cant have enough employees, then dont build such a big store.

Anonymous said...

Quit asking me if I want to open a charge account to the store. If I want to, I'll let you know!

Anonymous said...

Speaking about Walmart lines, when the new grocery section opened, so did self checkout. I enjoyed breezing past everyone standing in line to have a cashier check them out while I checked out and was on my way out in seconds. I dont know what kept people from doing self check out. Now the self check out lanes are crowded and it pisses me off.

Anonymous said...

As for the Target charge account, I believe the cashiers have certain quotas to fill. I knew someone who once worked there.

Anonymous said...

I have noticed lines at Target in the late afternoon. They should have management help with the rush hour. The clerks often ask if I want to open an account and save...but I've never had anyone persist. I also find they are the most friendly and attentive (to the task at hand) of all the stores in town.

Coffee Guy said...

"easy walking distance to the Menards strip mall and Dennys"

Like anybody patronizing a Denny's is going to walk anyplace in their lives.

dale said...

The lines at retail (with a singular exception) are due to the problems that they are having in finding enough employees. There aren't a lot of stores in town that don't have a "help wanted" sign up.

The singular exception is Sam's Club, which seems to thrive on long lines -- I've seen huge lines, two registers open, three employees chatting at the "manager stand," and a couple more just wandering around aimlessly. Maybe they don't train everyone to run a till, but it's pretty annoying and doesn't leave you with a good impression of customer service at the store.

Anonymous said...

"Which is pathetic, if you cant have enough employees, then dont build such a big store."

Anyone notice that almost every single place is hiring in town? Too many businesses, not enough people to work. This will end up being a longterm problem considering a large portion of this job sector is made up of HS students. With each business that starts (Denny's, Canad Inn, etc.), the employment pool gets spread thinner and thinner. What we really need is REAL decent paying jobs to attract people. Then they can reproduce and create more kids that will eventually work at McDs, BK, etc.

Anonymous said...

The reason that they can't fill those jobs is two-fold. The reason that was just stated, as well as the fact that the industrial park has been so successful in adding new jobs. Those jobs pay 10-12+ to start, plus benefits. With so many of those jobs available, the people that generally would be working in the service industry go to the manufacturing jobs that pay benefits. This leaves the pool even thinner for the service industry.

Anonymous said...

There are no restriction on the use of the old Target space. GK, who owns the mall, bought that property, as well as the JC Penny building, with no strings attached. They don't own the Macys or Sears property, however. Herbergers has wanted the old Target space for quite some time. I'm not quite sure why GK hasn't struck a deal with them yet. Maybe they changed their mind?! I agree GK needs to do something and do it fast. The vacancies inside the mall are alarming. I hope they can turn it around.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the Grand Forks Herald this morning.

There is a sexual predator on the loose in Grand Forks. A 13 year old girl was assaulted on the North end of town on Sunday.

BUT...does the Grand Forks Herald cover it on Monday...didn't see it. Where's it at on Tuesday. Half way through the first section (5A). This isn't a front page story? Instead we get some bull about the L.R. Heritage Center in Devils Lake closing. THERE IS NO WAY THIS SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PRECEDENCE to a sexual predator on the loose.

With the stories about sexual predators here and elsewhere gracing our front page, how does this case merit a 5A story.

I have lost what was left of the little respect I have for this lame newspaper. As a parent of one and another on the way, this saddens me that a story about a guy preying on teens can't even make the front page and have some decent print on it.

Shame on the Herald and it's staff for doing this disservice to the residents and children of Grand Forks.

A concerned citizen...

Does anyone have an update on when the River Cinema will be open?

Anonymous said...

GF needs more service sector jobs...(sarcasm).

Also, the reason Walmart is understaffed is because they choose to understaff. It's the same reason why when you start working at Walmart, they give you a big packet full of information on how to get on gov't assistance programs (welfare, WIC, etc). They pay so little in wages that you are probably either going to have to work overtime, or get on public assistance.

Hope saving that $5 makes it worth it. Fuck Walmart, and fuck everyone who shops there...

dale said...

when you start working at Walmart, they give you a big packet full of information on how to get on gov't assistance programs (welfare, WIC, etc).

Source?

I don't like Walmart, and do not shop there, but that bit seems a little far fetched. I remember Northwest did something vaguely along those lines (although now that I look at it, it's even more idiotic,) and caught a lot of crap for it. Can't imagine that anyone would think it a good idea to tell new hires they'll need to go on welfare.

Regardless, poor service (intentional or not) will eventually be met with less revenue, and the shop that skimps on staff will suffer. That's the way capitalism works. For Grand Forks' sake, though, one hopes that poor service results in people bypassing the city entirely, not just avoiding a few stores.

dale said...

Oops. "results in people bypassing" in that last sentence should read "doesn't result in people bypassing," of course.

Anonymous said...

Whew!

Glad you took care of that, Dale; I had my poison pen ready!

I heard that River Cinema plans to be open by Thanksgiving... so next week if all goes well. Rumor has it that tickets prices will be about the same as Carmike, but concessions priced cheaper. Guess we'll have to wait and see... but I'm very excited for another movie theater choice, especially since the only movies I've wanted to see (i.e. pay for) in theaters as of late have only been playing at the Columbia Theater - which is a sticky-floored, raggedy seat dump.

I agree about the sexual predator on the loose and barely any coverage. This should be all over the tv and papers.

This story was at the beginning of WDAZ's newscasts yesterday. Didn't see any updates today though. I was surprised too that it was buried in the Herald this morning!

May I just say that "Taste of the Holidays" at the Alerus tonight is the BEST hidden secret in Grand Forks!

Pretty much every restaurant in town was giving out delicious food, and then between Happy Harry's and El Roco, there was far more wine, beer, and liquor than one could imagine. All for a $10 entry fee.

Well done, event organizers!

lets just say that the powers that be in the city don't like the "bad" news that sometimes comes from the police press releases. There was an armed robbery home invasion that I covered last year that was on the news at 6 but not at 10, on page A5 of the Herald, and never heard of again. A guy had his house broken into, a knife held to his throat, and money taken. I covered a guy getting nearly beaten to death on the bike path near the hospital, and it received nearly the same treatment. Both times concerned city councilmen called one of the captains and asked that the police dept try to not make it sound like they were random acts of violence. I guess some people want it to seem like a peaceful little hamlet, even when there should be (as in this recent case) coverage since people need to look out for themselves sometimes.

Anonymous said...

As long as the new theatre has stadium seating, I don't care if the prices are the same as Carmike. Stadium seating is the best.

Anonymous said...

If the Canadian dollar stays strong, I think we'll start to see the mall fill up-hopefully even the old Target space.

I agree with the comments ripping the Herald for not covering this story more... I was wondering where it went and I seriously forgot about it until I read your comments.

The Herald should be ashamed of themselves, terrible job on this one.

It's time to wake up and realize that yes, even in quiet little Grand Forks there is violent crime. I'm sick of people denying it. Is there less crime here than in the Twin Cities? Of course, but is there NO crime in GF/EGF? Of course not. Instead of trying to lull people to a false sense of security, Grand Forks news outlets should have a RESPONSIBILITY to cover these kinds of stories to make people more aware, and also to catch offenders on the loose.

The Herald really screwed up on this one.

Anonymous said...

Who cares about the Herald? I mean all we do is bitch on here about the Herald. You know there are other media in town. You'd never know it on here, though. Maybe a glancing reference here or there, but then, back to the Herald, Herald Herald! I'm sick of hearing about that paper.

It's Herald this and Herald that. C'mon. Wow. Why put it on such a pedastal all the time. They must love all the free advertising that they get on here... like PT Barnum said (and I am paraphrasing) "any publicity is good publicity." It's like we can't wait to read the next edition so we can have something more to write about or something to bitch about. People, it's not as important of a rag as you make it out to be. Or am I wrong?

Is it that powerful of an entity in town that it's all we have to talk about? I mean seriously.

Ok, gotta run, got to get back to reading the paper.

Bye

I'm a little late in posting, but as far as lines go - Target and lots of other stores have been very busy lately, in part due to the Canadians. That's good though because a lot of the country is a little slow lately.

I wouldn't worry about 20 or 30 minute lines once in awhile during busy shopping seasons. I lived in Gillette, Wyoming where the minimum wait, at midnight on a tuesday, at any given grocery store was 45 minutes. Good luck getting fast food or a hotel room.

I don't think people are putting the Herald on such a pedastal right now. They are bitching about the fact that a little girl was sexually assaulted by someone who is possibly running around GF/EGF at this moment assaulting other little girls. Yes, the Herald has their faults. Yes, they are not the greatest paper in the world, but the immediate issue, if not crisis, is that the Herald is not reporting more about what happened to this little girl, and neither is WDAZ.

Even if there is no new evidence, news, thoughts, whatever...the story should be in the publics mind constantly in case someone thinks of something or remembers something that could help solve this case and catch a piece of shit who would hurt a little girl.

WDAZ obviously reads this blog. Someone asks about new taxi companies, WDAZ runs a story on City Cab taxi, someone asks about River Cinema, prices and phone number are listed, the next day, it's on WDAZ. Coincidence?

Anonymous said...

Yes

Lynsey said...

If WDAZ reads this blog, then I'm calling them out here for showing Dakota Commercial's Campus Place complex in a story about how UND Apartment Resident managers will possibly need background checks in the future. This is just one example of their filler footage often being marginally relevant, if not completely irrelevant, to the story.

Anonymous said...

Funny, I was just commenting to my friend at work about that whole WDAZ/Blog thing. There is no question about it that they monitor this blog for story ideas the same way that they mine regional smalltown weekly newspapers for stories. If it's in the Crookston Daily Dissapointment, The Exponent or the TRF Times on Monday morning, you can bet it will be on at 6 p.m. that night on their newscast. (Which amazes me, because the core audience that would be interested in these stories would have already seen them in those papers long before they hit the air) A better things would be to take stories from these papers and see if they could be developed into something with broader more regional interest.

I also notice they take a lot of stuff from KNOX radio news. They lean to much on other media sometimes instead of making their own waves.

I am not saying that monitoring blogs is a bad thing, though. It's actually smart. Because this blog is just another way to get a good sense what the public is thinking about. All media would be stupid not to monitor this and other blogs.

But it is interesting to see how desperate DAZ seems for stories sometimes by the stories it does choose to do off of this blog.

I mean, really, a new taxi service or having your main source for a story on the cinema's grand openig be a telephone answering machine message. That is pretty weak journalism. But, it's what we've all come to expect from the kids at DAZ.

There needs to be more military discounts in this town. I always hear of discounts and incentives for college kids but barely any for military members and their spouses. Well thank goodness, Moe Gibbs is found guilty. At least he got a somewhat fair trial in Bis which he couldn't in GF. As far as blogs and Herald/WDAZ they have quoted us several times and so has Tom Dennis. greenglass4.

Anonymous said...

Which is fine, greenglass, right? Blogs are just another place to gather news. And with the wider more established news net that the Herald, DAZ and KNOX can cast, it serves them well to jump on stuff they find in the blogs. They will get it to a larger audience than the blogs ever could fathom. Simply because they have been around longer and are entrenched as the news sources of the area. That could change over time. But that is the case now.

Blogs are the next best thing to the tipster calling in a big scoop. The media isn't getting it directly, but at least they're getting it.

In any case, at least it's not out in another non-central location anymore.

I read a comment in the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead about Gibbs being found guilty. Morgensterns's mother commented "there's two lives lost." Not only was a young woman murdered by Gibbs, but it also should be noted that the rest of Gibbs life will be spent in prison. Not a pretty picture for him. I agree with what she said that two lives were lost. Before this murder, Gibbs had a life and a future. It sickens me when people trash this guys dignity because of a serious crime. Yes, he committed a vert serious crime and took the life of another person who had a future and was loved. And, yes, he deserves what he got, and, yes, he also disrespected life by taking a life. But this doesn't give us a reason to trash this guys name and dignity. He's human like the rest of us. Unfortunately, his life went down a very dark path.

I don't see a lot of dignity in someone who murders and rapes. He is human. He does not have dignity.Maybe when he was young, but not now. I hope he finds "dignity" in prison.

Regarding the Broken Drum investigation...my wife works with the mother of the girl whose fiance (Joel Lovelein) was killed. I was told that the police are close to making an arrest but the person of interest has hired lawyers and the PD want to make sure they have a strong case before the arrest. The mom told my wife that the person of interest is a college student and that blood on his costume matched Joel's blood. Also apparently the person or persons of interest were involved in a fight earlier that evening (at the same place or not I dont know).

Anonymous said...

dan - I hope you are right. Unfortunately, charges like this are brought by the State's Attorney's Office. That office is often the most gutless organization that there is in the county. If you look at past homicides and investigations, they do everything they can to get a plea bargain to avoid trial, even if it means innapropriate sentences. In the serial rapist case a few years ago around the UND campus, and again recently with the man who tied up and beat a 75 year old lady in her own home, judges have called the plea agreements innapropriate for the level of crime committed.
The sherrif's department has DNA evidence in a homicide that happened in 2001 (Belgarde double homicide) just outside the city limits on 32nd Ave. South, but the State's Attorney has refused prosecution. Police wanted to bring charges agains their suspect in the Lovelien case when the blood and DNA evidence came back with the victim's blood on the suspect's clothes, but that is not good enough for the State's Attorney, as they now forced the police to send off the victim's clothes again to double check if the suspect's blood in on those clothes.
Then there is the case of the beating death back in 2001 where a son beat his father to death in the Southwinds Apartments. The son went off after the homicide to South Dakota and was sentenced for burglary and received a few years in prison. The GF State's Attorney then charged him with Manslaughter upon his realease from SD - got a plea agreement where the State's Attorney recommendeda sentence that ran at the same time as the burglary sentence in SD. The result? A man who beat his dad to death served TWO WEEKS in county jail for this crime.
Just some things that need to be publicized as this is an elected position!
Justice in GF County is very hard to come by.

Anonymous said...

wow insider, assuming all this stuff is true it is amusing how none of it is really covered in the media...People hear all about the crimes, but they never hear about the actual punishment. Everyone assumes they get harsh punishments when in reality they end up with a slap on the wrist...the two weeks sentence for the Southwinds murder is ridiculous.

What a country we live in.

Anonymous said...

Very true, as well. Since the victim was a Native American there was a bit of coverage on the Turtle Mountain Reservation, as well as a very little bit in the local media. Sambursky (the UND rapist) was offered a sweet plea deal, but luckily the judge (I believe judge Braaten) denied the deal. The incident with the elderly lady getting tied up and beaten has been in the media, but very sparingly. It would be interesting for the Herald to start up some sort of court report. That is the only way I see the public taking an active interest in the matter, and since the judges and State's Attorney are elected positions I would think the Herald would have good reason to start one.

Therefore, whenever you feel like it’s now your time to stop its preference you should consult to your physician regarding your query because they normally want you to reduce its intake gradually before allowing you to stop its intake completely.

So I just got a voice mail from my girl friend that she has been fucking around with my friend!!! So like any pissed boy friend I have choosen to post every hot clip I have of her to the internet. I have posted the pics here: http://www.GF4Free.com/
Just search for sexyerica344, enjoy!

I used to be able to access my hotmail account on my iPhone and it would appear as it does on my computer. I could view the messages AND the images in a clean interface. Now when I try to access it I'm taken to the 'mobile' version - which just displays the text - no pics. How can I get back to viewing my hotmail messages with having to view them through the 'mobile' view?
