Hana Japanese Grill opens

As Herald reporter and fellow area blogger Ryan Schuster previously reported, there is a new dining option at the Columbia Mall's Dakota Cafe food court. Hana Japanese Grill opened earlier this month and serves Japanese food including sushi, chicken dishes, and seafood. It's owned by the same group that owns the Magic Chopstix location in the food court.

Has anyone tried out this new restaurant yet? If you have, please share your thoughts. Are we talking about a carbon copy of Magic Chopstix here or is this place unique?

I'm glad to see another restaurant open at the food court. What other types of restaurants would you like to see open up in the remaining spots?

its a carbon copy, only difference is that they have sushi

Ah, but the Canadian neighbors are happy!

If only they could snag a Famous Dave's in the beautiful food court, though...or a place to get a simple hamburger.

I'm willing to try it after our yearly horrible, and horribly expensive, experience at Kon Ichi Was a week or so ago.

To the person who says they have sushi: what did they have? Do they have anything that's not made with surimi (the fake crab meat), or is their only offering California roll?

I went there after seeing it mentioned in the paper last week. Ugh. Definitely a carbon copy and not "Japanese cuisine" like they bill it as (I guess when you've had enough of the real thing, it's hard to go to something like this).

But even for food court food, I would've rather had some other place similar to it (like a Panda Express or Maki of Japan). Undercooked rice, weird noodles for the yakisoba. No thanks.

I didn't have any sushi, but they didn't have it just sitting on the counter. I imagine it is pre-made and not made fresh in front of you.

If you do go, ask for a cup of water and try to find out where it comes from.

As for coffee guy's horrible experience at Kon Nechi Wa's [sic], I'm also not surprised. ;) The fried rice at lunch is good, but I didn't like anything else I've had. Yuki Hana in Fargo is pretty decent if you're there and for landlocked sushi, I had no complaints.

I would like to see a Sonic go into the mall food court. They have been really successful in malls in Oklahoma and Texas, and since we are tempted with the commercials up here anyway, they might as well come on up here! :-)

I have tried both resturants and I think they offer a different slection of menu options.(Not a carbon copy)The foods I have had are all good and tasty. both places are very clean and food is hot. Not like a few of the poor quality buffets that are mostly carbon copy restaurants. Not a one
buffet in town is clean or have hot foods and worst of all the bathrooms are gross.
We should be thankful for the Hana Grill and Magic Chopstix they have hot food from a clean restaurant.

Taking exception. The Royal Fork---and I know some will shake their heads---but it remains static in turning out foods that are kept hot, served in a cleam facility. Granted, they slip up on occasion with a smaller choice of options, but overall their buffet retains an above average rating.

The above poster mentioned clean restrooms. I'm wondering why the restrooms become so bad in the first place. Perhaps we need to train some of the potty goers better.

I shake my head vigorously at the Royal Fork. My wife went there once and there were ants crawling on the buffet line. There fix was to just brush them aside. Hard to go back after that type of experience. It makes you wonder what you don't see.

I think it's about time for Subway to open up their second mall location.

It looks like to me the poster was speaking about the buffets that are
serving chinese food not meaning the royal fork or the golden coral.
Neither would I eat in again. The have really bad cleaning habits and yes the bathrooms are nasty in both locations only lead one to beleve the kitchen is as bad. Why would the Mall need another subway.

What the hell does remain static mean either the food is hot or not.

Subway in the mall was awful today. Yes it was very busy, but when you have to remind the person to put the meat in your sandwich (it's in the microwave) 5 times between 2 sandwiches, I get annoyed.

Also, when I say I want "tons and tons of onions" what does that mean to you? Why does that seem to mean only a pinch of onions to every single Subway worker in the world? And when I see that your first "handful" of onions is really just a pinch and I proceed to tell you to triple that amount and you proceed to take another tiny, tiny pinch...what the hell is wrong? Maybe they should just allow customers to put their own toppings on. And why is it so funny that I like tons of onions??? Every single time I go there the person making my sandwich ALWAYS makes a face that they don't believe I really want that many onions, and without fail the customer in line behind me always laughs that I want that many. Seriously, are a million onions on my sandwich that funny???

In summary, when someone says "tons and tons", that does not mean 2 strips of onions.

In short, yes. And remind me to never stand too close to you after you've been to Subway!

I agree with you. My family has eaten at the Royal Fork off an on for years and the place has indeed remained static. The only thing that has changed in recent times is the price...it has become a little too expensive for what is offered. Also, they stopped having all of those good coupons. I've never seen any of those alleged ants...I've always thought of the Royal Fork as a clean restaurant. They had a much higher rating than the Golden Corral in the recent inspection ratings.

Usually I wouldn't care about this sort of thing...BUT...is it a pre-req to be messed up or stoned while working at Subway? I'd go into the story of what happened today to me and everyone else who showed up at this time, but I'm not that mean to a local business with local employees. Never again, that's all I'm gonna say.

I'll join in on Subway complaints.

First the good: service at the downtown location.

Now the bad:

Service on Washington (with TCBY,Caribou, etc.) has been lackluster during our past couple of visits. To keep it short, the sandwich maker line has been chaotic.

Note to employees: if you are advertising a brand new sandwich, please learn how to make it.

I'd take Royal Fork over Golden Corral any day of the week, GC does not impress me...the service sucks, and though they have more food... it's just not good (to me at least).

As for Subway, the worst experiences I have are on the Columbia Subway by Green Mill...The girls that are working there never seem to devote their attention to the customer, talking to eachother about last night's parties and whatnot, and they always screw something up and I end up with a messy sub. I couldn't take it anymore, I stopped going there. Now my Subway of choice is the one on So. Wash (caribou coffee), I've never had any bad experiences there.

And to the poster that loves tons of onions, that's disgusting, and I would also laugh. I also hope you have a lot of tic-tacs handy for the sake of your significant other! (no offense, just giving you a hard time)

Subway-my daughter worked there a few years ago. The owner then, some blonde, told the employees to scrimp on the toppings, or charge extra. Maybe the new owners are following suit.

Royal Fork-I quit going there when on three separate occasions they ran out of roast beef and offered me slices of grissle and fat.

I was the one who posted about lots of onions.

I don't carry tic-tacs, but I do have lots of gum. :) I realize lots of onions is not "normal", but I've seen worse. A friend of mine gets olives and pickles and cheese on her sandwich. That's it!

I like lots of onions too. Funny that people find that so breath offensive. Garlic breath makes me drop.

I love lots of onions also, and I've been with a man who HATES onions for almost 8 years.

You may laugh at my onions, but I may laugh at your bad luck in love. ;)

Please bring Sonic to town!!! Anything other than ANOTHER Village Inn- Denny's-Perkins...enough already. Heaven forbid we have some ethnic restaurants, like Indian food. How about Scandinavian food??

Anyone seen ants at Sanders 1907 ? Kim says he has none.

I ate at the Italian Moon buffet and this restaurant should not be in business. I was sick for two days after eating at the Italian Moon. Bad thing for them is It was the very first time I had eaten there. NEVER AGAIN THE PLACE IS DIRTY AND MADE ME SICK. Back to the Hana Grill because of all the talk about it I tried it today and the food was overpriced and luke warm at best. I paid just about $10
bucks for a plate of food, very small portions and a drink.
So if static means hot food they need some.

Anonymous said...

Static means non-changing. The reference was to customary hot food at the Royal Fork, not Hana Grill.

The Subway in the Holiday station by Menards is by far the worst one in town. One of the workers ate a piece of cheese while making a sandwich for a customer, plus they are extremely slow and hide in the back room.

Joe DiMaggio's!!!!!!!!!! I miss that place!!!

Was this a fourm on all the bad place to eat in Grand Forks or the
Opening of a new place in the Columbia Mall. As for me the Columbia Mall is a great place to shop and eat. The new Japanese Grill is AWESOME TRY IT!!!!

Went to Italian Moon once... once being the key word.

It's a Subway policy to give certain amounts of veggies on a sub, 1 ounce is the amount to be put on a footlong sub. Be patient with the person making your sub, everyones definition of ALOT is DIFFERENT, I use to work at a Subway, and many times someone would say I want a lot of whatever, so I would put what I considered to be alot of the product on, and then they would complain because I put to much on.

As for the new restaurant in the mall, the food was good, but its basically the exact same as Magic Chopstix, in my opinion anyways.

I walked by Hana Japanese last night. It looked repulsive.
