Only moving here recently, I have noticed that Grand Forks has a large problem with drinking and driving. Has anyone else noticed this? I wish that they would have more officers patrol late hours to attempt and catch those drinking and driving.

Anonymous said...

from 10 pm to 3 am they have a double shift on...and good luck getting the people to pay more taxes for more officers...that has already been discussed here! from time to time they will have an enforcement blitz that is publicized too. GF has a drinking problem as a whole.

North Dakota has a drinking problem. It's almost a deviant culture.

What is with the building (old Y annex) on the corner of North 5th St. and 2nd Ave. North? Who owns it and why hasn't the city told them to clean it up? Quite a message to send to the students of Central High School (they have to look at it everyday) that it is o.k. to own a property & board up the broken windows with plywood! Also, the sign has had the same message on it for several years! It is in total disrepair and who is responsible?

I think Dale Lennon should move on to coach the Minnesota Vikings.

His overall performance coaching the Sioux is exactly what the Vikings need to inject some certainty into an otherwise uncertain team.

As a person of Norsk heritage I am offended by the name "vikings" and the negative aspects brought to my proud people...

Dress us up in purple?!?! and loose?

ec99 said...

"and loose?"

They're only loose on Lake Minnetonka. But they do lose a lot.

No more Farmers Market for this year. That's one of my favorite parts of Grand Forks. Hurry up, Spring!

What was the demonstration/march all about on Sunday afternoon? I saw a drumline followed by about 60-70 people marching down Columbia, but I have no idea what their issue was. Pretty ineffective, if you think about it. None of the signs related to an obvious issue. Unfortunately it was all very opaque...

Anonymous said...

Were those the same guys standing on the corner of 2nd Ave. N. and Columbia (by the new UND Parking ramp) holding signs saying "Google Ron Paul"?, etc.

Anonymous said...

You should Google Ron Paul. He is a amazing Republican presidential candidate. He just raised $1,000,000 in seven days to end the quarter. Last quarter he had more money on hand than John McCain. He also usually wins the Fox News Debate Polls afterwards. But they discredit the polls and RP for being "internet spammers."

Anonymous said...

There was a walk for suicide prevention, led by a drumline. The group is called TEARS. Perhaps their signs were related to personal loss?

Anonymous said...

Ron Paul is too honest for American politics. (humor intended for those humor illiterate political correctness activists)

Anonymous said...

Hey Mike Peterson, the Steelers suck!

Matthew said...

Yeah, I'm going to vote for someone just because they can raise a lot of money. Woopee.

Anonymous said...

Don't you know that money = success and infallibility?

Come on...Bush? Eh?

Anonymous said...

I love how Ron Paul supporters seem to always talk to you as if they are spreading the Gospel to the ignorant. "Google Ron Paul!" "Look up Ron Paul and check for yourself!" I find that these people are usually political neophytes who are overly impressed with their sudden knowledge of "how things should be."

They remind me of the first year philosophy students that used to sit on the lawn at my college. They'd have signs that said "Ask me about God" and "Did you know there is no Heaven?" I get it, you read the chapter on Nietzsche. Now get over yourself.

What is the name of the company behind the Current Apartments being built downtown?

Anonymous said...

The developer of The Current is MetroPlains. i don't know if they are the leasing agents, though.

From wikipedia: "(Ron) Paul is opposed to federally funded flood insurance .... Paul opposes farm subsidies..."

Jeez, and to think I was contemplating voting for him. Thanks for pointing towards the Internet for some more information!

Anyone know of a great place to find apartments/condos/townhomes in Grand Forks?

Anonymous said...

I heard that the GF Herald is making two new destination websites. One for those that are coming to, or are located in GF, and a Canadian one too. Any thoughts? What would we want people to see and know when thinking about visiting?

Mike said...

If you are looking for a place to live you can check the newspaper and the yellow pages. Or I believe two of the major apartment management companies are Goldmark and IMM. Go to www.goldmark.com or http://immapartments.com/ ... Hampton Management rents townhouses too but they do not have a website. I live in one and it is really nice.

"Diesel prices set record in Grand Forks on Sunday
By Ryan Schuster, Herald Staff Writer
Published Tuesday, October 02, 2007"

Didn't Greenglass have a post referring to rising diesel prices last week? Could be he knew what he was talking about this time.

It's scary.

Anonymous said...

Even the delusional have occasional bursts of clarity. But, it is scary.

dale said...

Actually, he said that they were out of fuel and that harvest was in jeopardy. Not exactly the same thing. Contrast crops rotting in the field due to inability to harvest with higher wheat prices because of rising energy costs (across the board, not just diesel fuel.)

Neither is a particularly happy scenario, but, in the first, local farmers go bust because they get zero for their crop, while in the second, the rest of the country/world gets dinged for higher bread costs.

Anonymous said...

Will ND Gov declare "emergency" concerning fuel shortage ? ND Ag Com will give ideas today. Most farmers have several 1,000 gallons of fuel on farm. But truckers passing through will have problem, since they only carry 200 gallons. Fuel rations like in 1979 ? There is not a fuel shortage nationwide. Our latest shipment came from St Paul. Will farmers be mixing tractor fuel and truck fuel ? greenglass4.

Legacy apartments=lazy management said...

Do NOT rent from IMM-Legacy apartments anyway. Since they changed management, it has really deteriorated in those buildings. Not friendly at all.

I lived in a property managed by a company not mentioned here, and it was AWFUL. I thought they were a really reputable company because they have been responsible for a lot of high profile projects, but they simply didn't provide the support you expect from property management. I often waited a long time for maintenance concerns to be addressed, and my reserved parking space was rarely available once the visitor parking in our lot was reassigned as resident parking for another building. I don't want to name names, but this unnamed company was terrible to work with as a tenant.

If anyone out there hasn't been watching The War on PBS over the last two weeks, I urge you to check out the final installment which airs tonight at 7. This documentary has been incredibly moving. Tonight's episode covers the death of FDR, the discovery of Nazi concentration camps, the end of the war, and the homecoming of our troops.

GrandForksGuy said...

Greenglass, when you already have your own blog, how come you post "news" on my blog instead of on your blog?

Anonymous said...

Because your blog is SO MUCH better!

GF Park Board Meeting tonight. Agenda was "Dog Park Rules" but they passed over that and talked about CCFC Financing. The new Center Court Fitness Center. 3 groups of bank reps spoke. Bremer, Alerus and Wells Fargo. These 3 and 3 others are willing to be the "lead banks" to finance the whole project. Tax exempt financing about 5% plus a service fee for lead bank. There was 5 other plans for financing presented by John S. See on Ch 8 or GF Herald Wed. greenglass4.

Hi ok, i'm not sure if this is where I should bring this up. But we have wind energy blades built in town, we have wind, any body thought that getting those babies cranked up in the area would be a good idea? We certainly have acsess to the grid. They cost money, sure. But over the life of wind turbines, the benifits outweigh the liabilities.

I had to comment on Chuck Haga's Leevers article which appears in Wednesday's paper. Haga used to write for the Herald, but moved to Minneapolis in 1987 to write for the Star Tribune. It was recently announced that he would be returning to the Herald, but it wasn't announced exactly what position he would hold. The article lists him as a "Herald Staff Writer." If this first article is a sign of things to come, I'm excited to see Haga back at the Herald. His writing and reporting appears to be of a caliber that we aren't often treated to. The Leevers story not only got the message across that "Leevers is closing very soon" but it did so in a very engaging manner. I'm happy to see this style of reporting come to the Herald. For once, Minneapolis' loss is Grand Forks' gain.

I just watched Jessica Dugan's WDAZ report on charitable gaming at the Canad Inn and, once again, DAZ is making news out of no news. The basis of the story was "Will the NCAA be ok with a portion of the charitable gaming dollars being used to fund UND athletic scholarships?" That is a very good question that I hadn't thought about, but it was far to premature to air a report like this...Jessica Dugan had nothing to go on at all. WDAZ had contacted the NCAA asking them this question, but the NCAA had no answer at this time to give DAZ. Why air a story when the NCAA has no answers to give you? Why not wait until the NCAA is ready to at least make some sort of statement regarding the gaming dollars? Above and beyond that, why did the story put such an emphasis on the fact that the NCAA has a policy against student athletes betting on games? As far as I know, every reputable sports association has a policy like that. Players betting on games has absolutely nothing to do with what is being talked about here so I have no idea why Jessica Dugan decided it did. I couldn't help but notice that, after the story, Milo tried to emphasize that the type of gambling Jessica was talking about - athletes betting on games - had nothing to do with the type of gambling that will be taking place at the Canad. What a pointless story and what a poor way to start the evening’s newscast. I just couldn’t help but point this one out…rather frustrating.

WDAZ is Bush league reporting at best. I haven't come to expect anything less. You'd think since they are owned by Fourm Communications they could afford some more modern technology and improved talent...

"Haga used to write for the Herald, but moved to Minneapolis in 1987 to write for the Star Tribune."

I get the impresion that Haga is a victim of downsizing at the Strib. As for his journalistic abilities, they are excellent. When he left the Herald, he published a superb parody of MH's restaurant reviews. It was hilarious. If anyone still has a copy I wish he'd post it here.

Anonymous said...

I liked Haga's writing but had an encounter with him on a professional level once. I still liked his writing...

Anonymous said...

Forced retirement. Haga joins the masses. A sign of this era, unfortunately.

Minneapolis' loss; our gain.

Welcome back home, Chuck.

Rumor is that Marilyn Haggerty will be riding in one of our sugar beet trucks Fri. Hope she survives the bumps and uses her seat belt. It will be one of her best articles and I promise there will be no mention of the usual nonsense. Stay tuned. greenglass4.

I agree with Grandforksguy - greenglass, go post your news on your own blog. Your posts have nothing to do with the current topics on the thread and are very annoying.

Can anyone recommend a good rental agent? I am looking to rent an appartment relatively close to UND with courteous management and of great importance a place where I do not have to listen my neighbors through paper thin walls. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Dear fellows!

Is it a deal to convert iTunes to mp3? I say NINE :) Its really annoying not being able to play iTunes tracks with my $300 iriver!
Digging for a solution brings certain results. To convert iTunes to MP3 I used this tool drm removal (drm-removal.com or something like this, please ask me - will find that web again). I don't care what is drm - what I read, its something dealing with protection and nothing about iTunes.
But this tool really works for me and it converted quickly my iTuines entire library, including video files!.

How do you convert it? Why iTunes makes this inconvinience? I didn't like ipods at all! They simple stuck and suck!
What is that drm that I loose converting my itunes to mp3?

thanks in advance!
