Open Thread #39

Some of the more popular threads had 70-80 comments this past week...that's amazing. Can you keep it up?

Does anyone know the details regarding the UND Johnstone-Fulton Subway location's sale? When I moved my sister into Johnstone for the year yesterday, she and I found a sign on the door saying the location was not going to be reopening because negotiations between UND and the owner failed during the summer months. Is there any real possibility that it will reopen, or will it simply become an empty space in the middle of campus until UND can stick a Seattle's Best or Dakota Deli in there?

Like there isn't enough Subways in town already. Jesus they are on every corner...

Is anybody else wondering when they are going to light some of those signs on the Canad complex? The lack of lit signs doesn't exactly seem to be hurting the property (that place is busy!), but I think it's a little bizarre to spend $40-$50 million on a building but then never bother to actually put light bulbs in the building's signs. Odd things like this really bother me...

Also, can anybody who works at the Canad or who otherwise has some familiarity with the complex confim that the company is seriously looking into that second tower? That would be something...a 400 room, 26 floor (2 towers at 13 floors each) hotel in Grand Forks.

Why can't Canadians seem to figure out you're supposed to throw your food away, not just leave it on the table or floor?!?!

Anonymous said...

I agree with them not throwing food away. It's very aggravating!

I see remodeling and a building permit at the old Hardee's location on Gateway Drive. Anyone know what's going in there? The Subway that left the campus maybe?

The CVIC building downtown is quite nice on the alley side...I guess that is what they use as the main entrance. The 4th street side, the one most people associate with the building, is a wreck. Pull some weeds! It is a social service business and I hate to say it, but I like most people, associate looks with everything! That block is bad enough with the empty old jail on the south corner and the ugly, black, shiny building on the north corner. As the saying goes, "You can tell a lot about a man by his garden."

Anyone know what is happening with the old Ponderosa/Bonanza buidling?

They had a rummage sale in front yesterday and I saw the owner of GF Subways moving things around...

Maybe we are getting a "Giant Subway"?

Still Fighting It said...

I've heard that in Canada there are workers that are hired specfically to follow customers around and pick up after them - especially in clothing stores, where Canadians often just drop whatever they've been looking at right where they stand. I'd think that applies to the food service industry as well.

Anybody have any confirmation/insight on this?

I saw Debbie Conneran (the old owner of Subway) locking up the empty Big Lots store doors on Friday aft.

Has anyone seen Cliff Coss recently, owner of Twin Cities Motors ?

I believe Little Caesars/TCBY is going into the old Hardees.

I hear that Americans allow millions of their citizens to go without health care? Is that true? Can anyone shed any lilght on THAT?

We do some pretty ugly things too. Why all the Canadian bashing? If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have half as many retail and restaurant establishments as we do.

I love our friends from the North!!
They are enjoying their strong dollar and we enjoy some of the benefits

Anyone else notice greenbrainless4/hangslaben back- pedaling in his letter to the GF Herald this morning? Trying to save what little credibility he thought he had. Poor boy.

Still Fighting It said...

I hope my comment wasn't taken as Canadian bashing. I'm trying to validate a blurb I discussed with someone and wanted to gain a little understanding from it, if it's true.

Understanding by way of communication rocks!

MSBerlinger said...

I heard from someone who works at the TCBY/subway/little ceasers that they are going to make the old hardees a Subway... Just what we need huh?

But who knows....

Anonymous said...

Isn't the old Hardee's just down the street from the existing Subway that's undergoing renovation... although that hasn't them from building one on top of another so far.

Lynsey said...

While there may be plenty of Subways in GF, the one missing from campus is going to leave a BIG hole. There wasn't much variety in dining options on campus as it was, and now our only central campus dining option is gone. It was also one of the few places you could get food on campus after about 8 p.m. on the weekends.

If the old Hardees on Gateway is going to become a Subway/TCBY/Little Caesars, is El Roco going to expand into that space they rent now? I notice work on the Hardees on Columbia. There was even sign people there, is it going to become a Carl's Jr. since Hardees has such a bad rap. Same company, different name.

Anonymous said...

Just drove by the Hardees on Columbia, it is just a new Hardees sign going in.

GFG, looking forward to seeing your face amongst the 5,000 at UND this afternoon. What color t-shirt did you have on? :o)

Anonymous said...

Was there 5,000 people at the UND photo session ? I think there was, they ran out of t-shirts. I was first given an x-large green one on University Ave. then as we were waiting we had to put on a gray shirt over the green one. Nice Champion brand authenic athletic apparel, UND 125 1883. From Tradition To Tomorrow. On the back of shirt : UND Barnes and Noble U Bookstore. By the way, Barnes and Noble paid for the shirts so they deserve free advertising. Watch all of us on Good Morning America on Tuesday, WDAZ was filming. Lots of chanting, hollering, and arm waving. This photo and video will be used throught the year for celebrating 125 of UND. Will be nationwide. A few wore orange shirts, they are the flame in the photo. Only thing missing was free burgers, french fries, and sweet corn. greenglass4.

"Caller: Why I feel 'Mac Talk' went too far". This was the headline on todays editorial page (Monday, August 20, 2007). Did Mac go to far, I think so. You folks need to read the article and/or hear the tape of Mac's ranting about his form of justice. No trial, no DNA evidence, just guilty and a bullet to your head ! Sounds like vigilante justice to me. So what is the difference of hanging in an oak tree or the Point Bridge 100 years ago and Mac's fantasy of just a bullet to your head ? So this is the rest of the story that was not in your GF Herald. If the "perfect world scenario" is what Mac and his "followers" want, maybe you should watch the movie "Escape From LA" where roaming gangs kill and blow up things. That's not the Grand Forks I want, I am sure 98% of the people agree. So was this "Mac Talk" or was it Hate Talk", hate speech, a hate crime, a violation of civil rights, or inciting a riot ? (the GF Herald letter to the editor was edited ) greenglass4.

Greenglass says "the GF Herald letter to the editor was edited".

Hmmm, what would ever posses the Herald to edit a letter by such an articulate writer?

I understand UND ran a full-page ad in the regional edition of Sports Illustrated. Anyone know what something like that costs?

Anonymous said...

With all the development on 32nd, still can't figure out why they can't fill the old Target spot. They say the box store concept is wearing, and people are returning to the comforts of shopping indoors at malls.

I have no idea what that must cost but it must be quite a bit. They also have a full-page ad in the current issue of Time. Talk about spreading the word! Does anybody know how large of an area this version of SI or this version of Time reach?

What's going to go into Target? That's become an age old question these days. Don't ask me why it could possibly take this long to fill a space like this in one of the busiest commercial neighborhoods in the tri-state area.

I'm not sure about indoor malls coming back. From what I've heard, the lifestyle mall concept is the current trend in shopping center development. The only thing we currently have like a lifestyle mall in these parts is the Shoppes at Arbor Lake in Maple Grove. Urban Plains in southwest Fargo may eventually get to be somewhat like a lifestyle mall and there is another such development in the planning stages in Fargo. I'm expecting to hear something about this type of development coming to GF in the next couple of years. It's too late to develop University Village in this type of way, but I think something like a lifestyle mall will probably be built somewhere south of 32nd Avenue in the near future. At least, that's what I'm guessing.

Still Fighting It said...

UND also ran a full-page ad in Newsweek. I thought the pictures looked familiar...

It happened to run in the "best colleges for x and y" issue.

We should invite Mac to blog on here, maybe it'll help keep the moron greenglass off of here.

Greenglass says "the GF Herald letter to the editor was edited"
What part was edited, the part where you were the only person that mentioned Moe Gibbs and you bear the blame for getting the trial moved?

Or did they forget to add the part about your court case?

http://www.ndcourts.gov/court/opinions/920366.htm.

"Delores H. Oliver and Gary were married in 1980, and a daughter, Christine, was born in 1981. Delores and Gary received a divorce in Clay County, Minnesota, in 1982. Delores was awarded the sole care, custody and control of Christine.

"In violation of an order awarding Delores temporary custody, Gary absconded with Christine in August 1982 and failed to return her until June 1983. During the interim, Gary took Christine to various states and foreign countries. It was later determined that Christine was subjected to emotional and sexual abuse, and that '[t]he preponderance of [the] evidence was that the sexual abuse was sustained by the child at the hands of the Respondent [Gary]. ' Gary was charged with kidnapping in a Minnesota trial court, found guilty, and received a stayed imposition of sentence. Thereafter, a restraining order was issued against him."

Let us know Gary Greenglass4

Anyone visit the downtown Greenmarket last Saturday? I was amazed at the crowds. Wall-to-wall people around noon. I know some of the traffic was parents dropping off UND students, but there was an energy I haven't seen downtown in decades.

Well it is old news. The first "false allegations of spouse and child abuse made by my ex-wife was made up at your local Rape and Abuse Centers in GF and Fargo, I found this out because their fax numbers were on each page. This was all reviewed by Att Gen Heitkamp, Dean of Social Work Dept at UND, Director of GF Social Services, staff in SW Dept at UND. . Current City Councilman Doug Christenso was one of the lead attorneys in the divorce case. A current $5 million dollar civil suit is pending against attorney Beryl Levine etc. If you libel, slander, or defame a persons character you are liable, we may end up with nyour house and paycheck, you may be living at the GF Mission. Over 14 year period and $480,000 spent justice did prevail. My former spouse killed herself and boyfriend in 1996. So no hassels in last 10 years. I made a pledge to get even with your local Rape and Abuse Center in GF and Fargo. We sued in Fargo for $53 million and settled out of court. This is old news, I discussed all of this on KNOX Radio with first program with Dakota H and Kevin in a 2 hour program. just a few facts. greenglass4.

The Hardee's on the corner of Columbia and 17th is being updated and acutally receiving some support from their corporate headquarters finally.

The Johnstone-Fulton Subway is closed because Subway was demanding too high of a franchisee cost. Currently, UND Housing (those people in charge of Dining Services and the Residence Halls) does not have anything planned for filling that location.

I think greenass4 just threatened anyone that confronts his lies with a lawsuit.

funny...if you google Gary Hangsleben you don't find any of the court rulings he claims. Just the ones already posted. Not old news to most of us,greenglass4.

You prevailed by the death of your ex-wife and mother of your child?

Wow, success!

I'm getting a little tired of hearing about greenglass/gary and his past exploits. Can we move on to something interesting now? You know, I can shut down further discussion on a particular thread.

Anonymous said...

I kinda enjoy the exploits of greenass4. A little change over the exploits of Taco Johns don't you think?

Anonymous said...

I'm a little tired of all the "what's going in where" threads. I know its your blog GFG and I enjoy reading it but as long as greenglass4 keeps posting his nonsense-do you expect us to just keep talking about the retail in GGF? Thanks, but I'll move on.

Anonymous said...

Just an idea: Greenglass, how about starting up your own blog? Then perhaps we all can get some relief in here from hashing and rehashing the same ol' stuff all the time.

This is a great blog...but I agree with anonymous just ahead of my post, here: it becomes redundant with the bashing and constant inane reposting of the same darned court case over and over...and ditto to the monotonous tone that accompanies "what's going in where."

We want the "what's going in where..." We just need to think before posting yet another personal viewpoint that has been stated in this very blog time after time.

Surely someone can offer something new regarding Olive Garden or Famous Dave's if they take a moment before hitting the keys.

P.S. Grand Forks Guy:

You do a great job of moderating, btw; no complaints there.

I seriously love visiting this blog several times a day, love your positiveness in pointing out the pluses of a great community. I hope you never tire of maintaining this source of communication.

GrandForksGuy said...

Thanks nick.

I don't have a problem with discussing a variety of things in open threads...heck, that's obviously what they're for. I'm just concerned that, if we spend to much time trying to argue with greenglass, that will soon become the focus of way too many threads and his antics will overshadow other news and discussion. I'm not sure that greenglass is worth wasting time over. I never bothered to bookmark it (I don't know why anybody would!), but I believe that greenglass does have some blog out there...something with some inane name like "Single Dad Nascar" if I remember correctly...I'm sure he'll tell you all about it if you want to know. I think greenglass would be smart to stick to his own blog. He'll just have to be careful to not get kicked off of that blog platform like he was kicked off of Area Voices.

Don't worry about me tiring of this blog. I don't understand the burnout rate with blogs and discussion boards. Vastlane is dead and almost every other local blog is practically dead. As for me, I'm not going anywhere anytime soon.

Let's talk about the Art and Wine walk. Did anyone go last weekend? Has it been a successful venture for the participating businesses?

Anonymous said...

I've only been to the art & wine walk once this summer, but if I get a chance I will try to make it in Sept and Oct. The one time I did go it seemed like it was quite popular.

Last weekend we drove through downtown and it looked like there were quite a few people walking around with maps in hand. It actually surprised me how many people I saw, so I can only imagine the other times have been busy as well.

You must have missed a previous comment I made about this. I emailed Dakota and asked her these questions. She didn't exactly give me any reasons why the blog was shut down, but it is indeed shut down...at least for the time being. She seemed to suggest that she may go back to it at some point, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Anyone know why the city decided to put up traffic signals in front of the Alerus? 42nd St. used to be a nice way to get to the north or south end of GF without having to stop every 2 blocks! I thought the signals may have been installed for traffic control during large events at the Alerus, but they are on all the time. Fine if the city wanted to put a traffic signal to allow those coming from 11th St. (Valley Dairy) to turn onto 42nd, but install cameras so the signals do not turn red when there is no traffic coming from 11th St.!

P.S. Also, why are they installed on wooden poles? It gives performers and out-of-towners a cheap image of GF when they visit the Alerus.

Anonymous said...

"Also, why are they installed on wooden poles? It gives performers and out-of-towners a cheap image of GF when they visit the Alerus."

There are so many things in this town (and I use that word intentionally) that scream "small town". Not quaint, charming things like the Kegs or Smiley, but downright ugly things like the wooden poles the previous blogger refers to, or my personal pet peeve: steel buildings. They should be restricted to industrial zones.

Anonymous said...

Your getting worked up about traffic signals? They're on wooden poles because they are temporary until the permanent steel supports arrive. A look at all other traffic signals in town should tell you that none of the others use wooden poles so why would the city start using them here?

Since the cost of servicing an iPhone is outrageous and monopolized by one company. I'm wondering if jailbreaking is true, if its something you should/can do yourself, or should you buy one already 'jailbroken'?

Well I am currently a T-Mobile customer and am planning on buying an Iphone 3gs. Problem is, I hate AT&T. So I've heard of this thing called "unlocking" and what I assumed unlocking was is that you switch from AT&T's sucky, expensive service to T-Mobile. But by doing this unlocking wouldn't you risk losing your Data plan and have a "dead" iphone? Please tell me more about unlocking and what happens when you do it.
