I am wholeheartedly against bad grammar, but I am even more against idiots policing grammar incorrectly.
There is nothing wrong with "a historic" in fact, it's correct. "An historic" is used often enough (usually pretentiously) to be considered passable, but I'd love to see you produce a citation to support that one.

Certainly, the issue is muddy enough for Still Peeved to be in the wrong for bringing it up.

Still Peeved, I questioned whether it should be "a" or "an". The city website had "an", but that looked wrong to me. I spell checked it in Word and it said that it should be "a" and, since that one looked right to me, I went with that one.
