The Fargo-Moorhead Blogosphere has arrived!

Hey all you Grand Forks Life readers out there, I just came across something that I wanted to share with you. You remember my post the other day about all of the Grand Forks blogs that have popped up in recent months? Well, apparently someone from our neighbor to the south read it and didn't like it.

What follows is a post from something called "The Very First Fargo-Moorhead Urban Life Blog". Gee...I wonder where they got the idea of using the word "life" in their blog...

Here's what someone posted from a Grand Forks blog:

"When I consider the emergence of so many Grand Forks blogs, it makes me wonder where the "Fargo-Moorhead Blogosphere" is. Aside from a couple of blogs at the Fargo Forum's Area Voices website, there doesn't seem to be many blogs that primarily cover Fargo-Moorhead issues. I guess it's just another area where we have Fargo beat, huh?:)"

Funny, funny shit. Well, I all I have to say to that is this:

1) Grand Forks is a town that's on a fast 3:15 train headed to Nowheresville. There are NO well-paying jobs, the town is dirty, it's depressing, it's full of drunks, the population there is declining (unlike the boom we're seeing in F-M) and the place is about 99 percent white.

2) Putting the respective universities aside, there is absolutely NOTHING in ANY category that Grand Forks has that can even COMPARE with Fargo-Moorhead. F-M is on a completely whole other level than Grand Forks. The flood in 1997 did more damage to that town than people think. That flood pushed Fargo-Moorhead ahead of Grand Forks in almost every aspect more than any other instance in history. The F-M urban area has almost three times as many people as Grand Forks, and our metro area is more than twice as large. This is like someone from Oklahoma City telling someone from Minneapolis that they have the Twin Cities beat in most everything. Kinda sounds silly now, huh??

3) About the lack of Fargo-Moorhead bloggers: Well, we're here. And there's nothing to stop us.

I just figured you guys had to read that. It made me giggle.

Update - 6/19/2006
I see that the guy who started this blog is the guy known as "The Bisonator" at the bisonville.com website...check this thread out.

GFG, please get a clue. You took 20 minutes to set up a blog. Now, you've promoted yourself to Rockstar.

Just what Grand Forks needs...another self-professed community leader.

Funnt shit.

You go boy!

The part that made me laugh is where he said that the Fargo blogosphere does exist. Well...yeah. You exist. Great.

But who reads you?

Any doofus can set up a blog. Actual bloggers get read.

Though, if you want to talk about bad blogging scenes, you should see the Minot blogosphere. There's no one up here. Just me, though I don't do local stuff very often. Just some state-wide stories when they catch my interest.

Nice logic, URBANFM.

1. Last time I checked, there are plenty of well-paying jobs in GF. The EERC, UND medical school and Altru are just a few of the high-rollers. Obviously, URBANFM hasn't seen the megamansions around King's Walk or along the river south of town. The population is NOT declining and the population is NOT 99 percent white.

2. There's nothing in GF that can compare with FM? I didn't know Fargo had world-renowned hockey team OR an events center like the Ralph. I also didn't know GF and FM were competing to be "better"
(ambiguous definition) and didn't know that a larger population equals "being ahead." With that logic, Dhaka Bangladesh "has us beat". Now THAT kinda sounds silly.

I'm giggling right along with you GFG!

The Fargo-Grand Forks rivalry is ridiculous...it's like a 3rd grade level deal. If there is a rivalry, know what? We're getting our ass stomped on. Yes, they both have their positive and negative aspects but, to now go here..."we have more blogosphere activity, na, na, na, na, na". Now that's just ridiculous.

GFG...how old are you? 3rd grade?

If so...I apologize.

Where I come from, learning to click the "publish your comment" button once is taught in the second grade.

The owner of the FM Urban Life blog is almost certainly the poster known as "The Bisonator" on the NDSU sports web site: Bisonville.com.

The Grand Forks hate mentality on that site is, sadly, legendary. The owner/moderator of that site would have preferred the total destruction by fire / flood of GF, as seemingly many of the NDSU fans. If being a Grand Forksian was an ethnicity, that site would be officially a hate site. Thankfully, the vast majority of the citizens of Fargo are not like that.

"...and the place is about 99 percent white."

I can't say that's a bad thing. Having lived all around the world, I can safely say: diversity is vastly overrated.

Ok you guys, settle down. Both Grand Forks *AND* Fargo/Moorhead are a lot more interesting than most of the cities here in California.

Yes, I mean that. I've been all over this state, and I find a lot more to do out there in the midwest. So all of you, quit bickering and taking jabs at each other and live in peace. And look at the bright side - you don't have 81 Starbucks like the city of San Francisco does. Did you know that SF is only 14 square miles? And there are over 80 Starbucks locations. Literally dozens of McDonalds locations too. Y'all have what SF claims to have, and that's culture.

Laugh all you want, but I'm looking forward to moving out that direction.

I agree with drunk... the midwest is the place to be. Good education, low crime and pollution etc.

I don't agree at all. I moved to New York this past year and it is much better then GRAND FORKS! So much more is out there in the world but everyone in the Grand Forks area never leave because they think there town is so great. I think Grand Forks is so boring! You can go get drunk and go to a Sioux game. To bad all of you will never believe it!

Hey I just got on here and I was wondering if anyone heard the rumor that Joe Blacks was closing? I heard it one time three weeks ago and I thought no way and then I heard it again yesterday. That would be really fast if it is true. Does anyone know if they are going to close?

Garrison Keillor of Prairie Home Companion may have said it best during his appearance at the Fritz. Something like:

The people in GF believe in Evolution, because they've been to Fargo and they know Intelligent Design doesn't exist.

Could the small number of FM blogs relative to Grand Forks have something to do with the fact that there are things to do during the summer in Fargo?

Anonymous said...

Somebody needs to call the census, as they estimate that 337 people left Grand Forks between 2000 and 2004.

" moved to New York this past year" ... right, because the filthy place called New York City is so much better. Maybe because it has more lights and a camera shop run by the Russian mob every 200 feet. *snort*
Upstate NY is nice. But NYC? Ick. Been there, got out as fast as I could. if you like the dirty cramped city lifestyle, more power to you. But some of us look forward to clean air, fresh food, and the ability to buy a house with a yard for less than $900,000. :-)

sorry this is off topic but im hopeing that you all may know (because you seem to be in the know). Any clue of what is being built between the comfort inn and fairfield inn on 30th ave south near the columbia mall. hopeing for a good resturant or some other form of entertainment. Hope you know cause i would like to know

Fresh food? The food in GF sucks! it is all chains. NY has real food that is not chains. The city life is great and there is always something to do here. I can see why you are in GF. It is the #1 binge drinking place in the US.

Good Ol' Boy said...

Where's John Hoff? He could tell us we both suck, GF and F-M, then we could be united in our loathing of HIM. Real uniter, that guy... hahahahahaaaa....

Have a nice weekend kids.

The parcel on 30th ave so is owned by art greenberg. The best guess is Space Aliens, a project that has been on greenberg's table for 5-6 years. It could be something else, though, I haven't seen the hole.

Actually, I'm south of San Francisco, CA. SF is yet another overrated town with its fake 'culture.'

And last time I went down 42nd street, I sure saw a whole lot of chains. Chevy's, Applebees, McDonalds.. more chain restaurants than I could shake a stick at!

I go to S.F. every year and houses aren't to cheap there buddy. I think you are UND college kid making stories up.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone could answer that question that I left about Joe Black's. I went by today and it seemed open. Does anyone know if they are closing soon?

GrandForksGuy said...

Anonymous, this is the first that I've heard about the possibility of Joe Black's closing. I doubt that the owners would close so soon after opening and before they have done advertising or truly know how the establishment will go over. Does anybody know how there business has been?

Anonymous said...

I know One of the workers who puts in alot of hours and they said it has been really slow. Plus they have had to kick people out because they were under 21 so that hasn't helped. I don't know if there closing but they aren't doing what they thought they would.

Anonymous said...

It is my understanding that Space Aliens is going in the OTHER greenberg development behind Lowe's. I think that area has been platted for 6 or 7 commercial lots. Don't know about the other spot.
My take on Joe Blacks: I would hope that they would give it a real try before closing...

Anonymous said...

I have been to Joe Black's and I just don't like there theme. I can see why it wouldn't work. They can't compete with South Gate. Plus there menu is not very good. Well I guess if they do close maybe we can get a good chain to go downtown. I heard famous Dave's was looking for a spot downtown!

Anonymous said...

Famous Dave's in that building would be great! When is Joe Black's closing?

Grand Forks Sucks.

You know that Grand Forks has the Ralph and the Alerus, and a Hockey Team. Big deal. Fargo has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more to offer then sports. Has anyone in Grand Forks ever heard of art, theatre, or maybe something called locally owned restaurants?
