Wal-Mart adding 200-240 jobs

As work continues on the Grand Forks Wal-Mart to turn it into a Wal-Mart SuperCenter by this summer, word on the street is that the store is looking to fill between 200 and 240 new positions. A lot of these jobs will probably be in the grocery department of the store, but all departments should be getting additional employees. Nice to see more jobs coming to town. I know that there are plenty of people out there who have bad feelings about Wal-Mart, but they do provide jobs to a lot of people. A city like Grand Forks needs all types of jobs and it's great to see more employment opportunities out there.

They may bring jobs but they don't bring benefits, so taxpayers end up with the bill for their employees' healthcare...while they earn record profits! THAT'S not ok.

Those employees must not care because they apply for those jobs.

It's a false choice to say that without Wal-Mart those jobs wouldn't exist.

Hah, your first blog spam. Awlright!

And a lot of people apply for Wal-Mart jobs not knowing that they'll have no medical care. Many of them are elderly and/or just seeking part-time status anyway.

Costco also provides jobs, and they're doing a much better job. Benefits, 401k, etc. the results are proven - employees stay a lot longer. Turnover is lower, and along with that, the company is profitable. Wal-Mart is the bottom of the barrel.

Drunk Dude, I'm on your side :)

The previous blogger implied Wal-Mart jobs are better than no jobs. I meant THAT'S a false choice, because if Wal-Mart didn't occupy that low-cost niche, another more conscientious retailer probably would.

If people didn't apply for jobs at low-cost niche, their wouldn't be a low cost niche.

If people didn't apply to work at Wal-Mart in GF it would have to shut down operations.

Any job is better than no job for an economy. You have to try and look at the whole picture. It creates more OPTIONS. There will be at least one higher paying managerial position and that is excellent news one more than before. Those low paying jobs people dont' have to work at they can quit anytime. There is only so many people in GF and the area and when a new business opens they need to fill positions. When an economy has a low unemployment rate the only way to get people to work at your business is to HIKE up your WAGE. If people are leaving KFC to go work at Bostons Pizza...KFC will have to increase their average starting wage to compete. Comprende?

Someone doesn't understand the concept of "false choices."

It's like saying, it would be terrible if a tacky casino were built in GF. Well, then don't let a "tacky" casino be built. Make sure it meets certain standards, incorporates certain limitations, etc.

If Wal-Mart wasn't here, there's a distinct possibility that a more conscientious competitor such as Costco, Trader Joe's or another Target would take its place.

Can someone please list the stores that closed because WalMart came here?

Make sure each of them also provided benefits.

Anyone know if the cashier or janitor at Hugos gets benefits?

How about the cashier or janitor at Kmart?

How about the cashier or janitor at Green Mill?

How about the cashier or janitor at Sanders?

How about the cashier or janitor at Dominos?

How about the cashier or janitor at Italian Moon?

How about the cashier or janitor at Happy Harry's?

How about the cashier or janitor at Menard's?

How about the cashier or janitor at Boston's?

How about the cashier or janitor at Whitey's?

How about the teller or janitor at Community Bank?

How about the waitress or janitor at . . . . . I think you get the message.

A lot of the Mom & Pop places that closed didn't provide benefits either.
