Just curious, with gas prices these days, what do your readers drive? I used to be a pick-up man but finally went to a more fuel efficent car. Afterall how many days in a year do we really need a huge tank, one, two?

Anonymous said...

I have a 5.7L Chevy 350 pickup truck...and love it!

I see Columbia 4 closed. I guess people won't even pay a $1 to go in that theatre.

Anonymous said...

I drive a Honda Civic so I get fabulous gas mileage, however it is to small for us and we are looking to purchase an SUV. We often need a bigger vehicle and it gets old borrowing from people but will keep the Honda for day to day driving.

Anonymous said...

I drive an 03 Buick Park Ave. At 65 mph with no wind I get 35 mpg. Probably 85 % of my driving is on the highway. It takes a wind in excess of 20 mph to drop below 32 mpg.
I buy a 3-4 yr old car with as much as 100K miles. put on another 80-100k miles. Never had even $10K invested in a car. Never paid more than $800 total in repairs on any car. Always worth at least $2k when I trade it in.
Cars are cheap if you do that. No comparison in quality of ride. Think I do more than my share in minimizing my "carbon footprint"

Gas in Erskine was 3.09 on Sunday and when we got to GF it was 3.29. It was 3.19/3.21 in Bemidji on Saturday.

Anonymous said...

Hey. If you can afford to have a place at the lake, you can darned well afford gas.

No sympathy from this quarter.

Anonymous said...

whats the deal with LA Suits? I walked by their the other day, and the whole store was empty. Hope this doesnt mean another business going down...

Anonymous said...

Anon 11:08,

I'm not looking for sympathy or complaining about the high cost of gas. Just pointing out that is cheaper elsewhere. Have a nice day.

Anonymous said...

Someone asked in the last thread about the Columbia Mall Theatre. Yeah, it closed...

LA suits has closed but they will be opening again sometime in early 2009 as a tux rental store. I also believe they will be relocating as well.

Anonymous said...

LA Suits was a joke. Gangsta styles from the 80s/90s. I expected Joey the Shark to walk out of there at any time.

Anonymous said...

Did anybody enjoy the small lake in the Columbia Mall parking lot near the Ground Round this afternoon? It was at least a good 6 inches deep. I was suprised I didn't see any Canadians swimming in it thinking it was a new water park!

Hey, Anon at 1:11,

What, do you think I'm funny? Funny how? Funny like a clown, I'm here to amuse you, funny? Funny how? What's so funny?

I commute to the office in my V16 Cadillac Devastator. It gets 1.2 soldiers per mile...sorry, i mean miles per gallon hehe. It barely fits under a highway overpass and has never carried any cargo bigger than a 20 oz. diet coke. But it makes me feel manly and I can afford the gas because my HELOC is a bottomless pit of free money.

Why do so many local folks express such sarcasm and disdain in regards to the Canadian clientele? They infuse much-needed cash into the local economy and drive much of the weekend business.

It's not very neighborly of us. Dare I say, it's embarassing.

I have heard that the Columbia 4 Theater has already been sold and that an Olive Garden will be build on the property.

Canadian chicks are hot. I remember when the Antique was still around and I was a young lad about 22 years old and me and my buddy picked up some Canadian gals (they spoke French). Man, I remember her beautiful brown hair and the cute belly shirt she was wearing. That was a fun night.

This is how I feel about Canadian shoppers. I have worked retail and fast food for many years in Grand Forks. I like that they contribute to our economy, thats great. I do have a promblem when they are rude, don't pick up after themselves, and think becuase they are spending money here they can treat you how ever they want. I have so many stories and not enough time to get into it. Dealing with them 5 days a week in emotionally draining.....

Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcases

And we have to clean up after them
And our saddle sores are the best
We proudly wear womens' clothing
And seering sand blows up our skirts

And the buzzards, they soar overhead
And poisonous snakes will devour whole
Our bones will bleach in the sun

And we will probably go to (censored)
And that is our great reward
For being the

Why are we now just learning that our information has been stolen (UND alumni), when it happened last month? I guess a little notice right after it happened would have been nice. They can say our SSN and credit card numbers were secure, but computers can be cracked...

And we Americans are loud, opinionated, judgmental, racist and cultural and historical morons. But you don't hear everyone in town complaining about us as a nation. Why do you feel a need to lump all Canadians together?

Anonymous said...

"Why are we now just learning that our information has been stolen (UND alumni), when it happened last month? I guess a little notice right after it happened would have been nice."

"Last month" was a week ago. What difference would it have made? Was your identity stolen in the meantime? Are you Batman, ready to go after the nefarious evil doers when you see the Bat Signal in the sky?

Maybe, after reporting it to the police promptly, they were trying to get a clear understanding of the situation so as to let you know what was happening without a big scary cloud of "we don't know what this means".

It's not like this sort of thing is a rare occurrence, meriting some kid on a street corner shouting "Extra, extra! Hear all about it"!

Anon @ 8:41: I agree with you. I worked at a very popular full service hotel for 3 years and by Sunday afternoon, I was usually pretty pumped to see most of the Canadians headed back home.

I do appreciate the fact that they give a boost to our local economy. I try my best to be as "neighborly" as possible. There are a lot of painfully nice canadians I've come across, but they hardly make up for the bad ones.

Working at the hotel, the biggest thing that bothered me was their sense of entitlement. A lot of the canadian visitors felt that because they came "all the way from Canada" that we should roll out the red carpet for them. They also feel the need to barter EVERYTHING. They would fight tooth and nail just to get $5 off their final bill. You know how many times they would pull the "Well the lady on the phone told me my room rate was $50", but I was the person who took his reservation and told him several times the room rate was over $100?

I think the worst were canadian hockey parents. All day long they would nag about everything. One family from the team would get a $50 discount per night because they had a few problems, so then the entire team would be at the desk demanding the same discount.. nothing would be wrong with their room, they just felt like that's how it should work. Then, as soon as the game was over, the parents and the kids would hijack the pool area, the parents would get insanely drunk and the kids had free reign of the hotel.. playing hockey in the hallways and crap. I know this sounds harsh, but we had to kick entire teams out of the hotel because they absolutely would not listen to us.

I could go on, and on, and on.. but you get the picture. As much as a lot of you do not want to admit or acknowledge, there is a down side to our large number of canadian visitors.

Flame me if you will, but I was a slave to these people for three years.

I had to laugh about the comment of the 22 yr old picking up a Canadian woman at the Antique. I'm 39 now, and when I was 21, I also picked up a Winnipeg woman who was 29 at the Antique. I thought she was ancient! She came back to my pad on 2nd Ave North. I promptly got rid of her early, she got a cab and went to whatever hotel she was staying at.

Gosh knows they've really hit a new low.

Let's all try and see who can make the most stupid comment. (And yes, save your energy; I realize some people will refer to this very one.)

Heaven help us if visitors judge us by the childishness here.

Anonymous said...

Maybe bartering is more a part of the Canadian psyche and culture than here. So be it. Consider it part of your "international training," since you probably have no interest in traveling outside the US.

We all have to deal with difficult people in our personal and professional lives. But we don't have to look for ways to lump them all together.

Anonymous said...

I worry about that too Wayne. That people will read this in hopes of getting a good idea of our town and find a bunch of drooling idiots whining and crying and throwing out racist rantings like a bunch of monkeys throw sh*t. I used to sign my name when I would comment on this blog but I refused to be associated with such ignorant idiocy.

Anon@2:54: You might read the comment one more time, slowly.

Sometimes it takes a few people a little longer before they "get it."

The comment was intended to direct the crumbling of what was once a relatively reliable foundation regarding life in Grand Forks, something that 'DAZ even judged credible.

It's a combination of anonymous posting and pointless topics. This was once a source of interest, now it's a wasteland... looks at watch... I'm guessing that it's about time for another wonderful "pet peeves" or "I love Grand Forks" thread.

Theres nothing to talk about here, and even if there was, a lot of the semi intelligent posters left because of the hostile environment that anonymous posting (and the dickheads that hide behind it) promotes.

I have to say "God Bless" to Winnipeg when I was in my teen years... I came to UND, a virgin, awkward, naive, never traveled anywhere really. My freshman year at UND, in October, 4 of us took a weekend trip to Winnipeg (1987). I am still in awe of this.. Got to see a Winnipeg Jets game for $8.00 (with the Queen's painting in the background), got to go to strip clubs legally (I was 18 yrs old, 5 months), and I was introduced to some "escorts" (ahem) by my sorority brothers... 2 at once when I was 18! holy cow... let's just say my 1st semester bank account was drained by November... you seniors at GFC and RRC, do you have any idea what lies 150 mies to your north? The first guy thinks a moment then laughs and replies "Sure, I suppose you could eat it."

In today's Herald there's an op/ed by Vernon Lambert from Fort Totten. He suggests a reconsideration of the Sioux nickname debate. Part of this consists of a package UND should offer the tribes. While some seem valid, and concern education, his first two pretty much bear out what many had thought would be the crux of the matter: give to the tribes a percentage of both all logo products sold, and a percentage of the gate from sporting events. Seems like money is the aloe which relieves the sting of "hostile and abusive."

Anonymous said...

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think that the profit is large enough on the Sioux merchandise to make a difference to the tribes. Now if a $10 fee was tacked on to hockey and football tickets and a $5 fee to other sport tickets the University could give the tribes millions of dollars per year and if a $1 fee per beer sold was collected it would be even higher.

Anonymous said...

"Now if a $10 fee was tacked on to hockey and football tickets and a $5 fee to other sport tickets the University could give the tribes millions of dollars per year and if a $1 fee per beer sold was collected it would be even higher."

What's the difference between this and extortion? If the Sioux name is so hurtful, how could any amount of money salve the wound? Unless it was all a hoax leading up to a demand for dollars.

Anonymous said...

The only way the tribes will agree to the use of the Fighting Sioux name is if they have something to gain.

The Florida State Seminoles have little trouble with the use of their American Indian name. This is because the Seminole tribe gets a cut of the merchandise profit. They even have a mascot that wears face paint.

See: http://seminoles.cstv.com/#00

I don’t care if they keep the logo or not, but if they want to keep it they will have to give the tribes something that will benefit them.

Anonymous said...

"they will have to give the tribes something that will benefit them."

Jeeze, they already have an Indian Studies Dept at UND, plus Indians into...medicine, law, business.

Anonymous said...

The Indians into programs are a benefit to all American Indians. They also benefit the University by bringing in lots of Federal dollars.

You need to look at the logo issue like a business person would. If you have a camping product that you want to market, you can pay the Coleman Company, and they will allow you to use Coleman name and logo.

So if we are marketing UND’s sport teams and want to use the Fighting Sioux logo and the tribes agree to a yearly payment, why not make the offer. Of course the issue will come up, “who owns the name?”, and if it were up to me, I’d say the Chippewa (who coined the phrase) would be the owners. Of course UND has the trademark on it already.

I do like the current UND Fighting Sioux logo and will hate to see it go.

Anonymous said...

Don't you think it would be insulting to offer a monetary compensation? If the name is so offending and abusive how could any amount of money justify using it? I may be mistaken but didn't they allow us to use it and then decided later that they didn't want it being used? It just doesn't seem like a very good idea. It will raise the prices on everything to cover the lost profits and it just seems greedy for both parties if it were to be excepted.

Anonymous said...

"So if we are marketing UND’s sport teams and want to use the Fighting Sioux logo and the tribes agree to a yearly payment, why not make the offer."

This is all well and good. But, as alluded to above, it does sound more like extortion than a business deal. The tribes were adamant about not supporting the nickname. What kind of hypocrites would they be portrayed as if they now sold out for money?

Anonymous said...

"It will raise the prices on everything to cover the lost profits"

I wonder how many diehard Sioux hockey fans would pay a premium on ticket prices, knowing it's going to others who hold their beloved nickname hostage?

Anonymous said...

Sure, it is insulting to offer monetary compensation and if it’s offensive and abusive to the tribal leaders, they will say NO. But the offering of money will be the only way in which support will be obtained.

So I say, make an offer and when it is refused, move on with a new name and era. If an offer was accepted, then it would have to be negotiated every so many years and yes, it would be held hostage and the tribal leaders would be hypocrites, but those hypocrites could use the money to help their members live a better life.

Of course this will never happen. The logo will go away in 2010. How about the Fighting Bubble Heads! I herby promise to take no offense.

Anonymous said...

Bubble Head - you haven't been to the reservation lately, have you? Tribal leaders are among some of the most currupt people around. They take the profits of the casinos while the rest suffer and get next to nothing from it. One chairman will say one thing, and then the next one will say something completely different. There is no way this nickname thing is going to be overwith, ever. Might as well change it and move on.

Anonymous said...

Anon 2:11,

I spend lots of time on the White Earth Reservation (and not all of it in the Casino). There is corruption on the Reservations. Google the name: Darrell "Chip" Wadena. The current leadership there seems to be on the up and up.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit Fort Berthold Reservation. I enjoyed my visit, but learned that it is a different world there. You are always hearing about some kind of corruption on the Reservations.

It’s a lot of who you are related to and who is in control of what and who has the purse strings.

You are right, there is no way the nickname issue will go away.

Anyone try finding a beer mug, wine glass, flask, etc. with a Sioux logo on it? Good luck. I've been told by a friend who was looking for one that they've stopped making them. Instead any such items can only have U. of ND on it.

Anonymous said...

Hey, like I said before. "North Dakota Fighting Irish". You don't have to give my kids a leg up with their medical or legal education, have an Irish Studies Center or give me any profit from Fighting Irish sports. And I would be honored. Please.

Anonymous said...

Don't you think it would be insulting to offer a monetary compensation?

Not if they ask for "monetary compensation."

http://tinyurl.com/sioux-buy-out

Here are several items our tribe could request in return for letting UND use the Sioux name.

** A percentage of all gross sales of clothing and merchandise sold by UND or associates with the Sioux name or logo on it.

** A percentage of the total gross revenues taken in from Sioux athletic events. These revenues should be earmarked for tribal education programs, primarily to expand on our ancestors’ oral civilization philosophy and education system and to manage the agreement.

** Continued support by UND of the Indian Studies Department, as well as a new “Sioux oral civilizations” concentration to be added to the department.

** Recognizing and teaching the Sioux (Dakota, Lakota and Nakota) language as an accredited foreign language.

** An ambassador-type position for UND from the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes. The ambassador would oversee the agreement, have an office at the UND Indian Center and help represent our students at UND.

** Expansion of scholarship programs for tribal members from the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock tribes.

** An alliance between UND and Cankdeska Cikana Community College and Sitting Bull College, forming a big-sister-type relationship.

(and some people said the Fighting Sioux name wasn't for sale)

Anonymous said...

"Here are several items our tribe could request in return for letting UND use the Sioux name."

The guy proposing this has no authority to carry it through. If money is what it is all about, maybe UND could just pony up a few million for a 30 year contract, and add it to one more student fee. That way, the tribal leaders ger their lucre, UND keeps its nickname, and the students get screwed again.

"Hey, like I said before. "North Dakota Fighting Irish". You don't have to give my kids a leg up with their medical or legal education, have an Irish Studies Center or give me any profit from Fighting Irish sports. And I would be honored. Please."

Oh really? Were you born in Dublin? or possibly Limirick? How about Cork or Kilkenny?

NO? Then how could you be Irish?

What you mean is you are an American who has Irish heritage. That makes it a hell of a a lot easier to accept a symbol, nickname and logo, such as the Fighting Irish (which, by the way, as an American of Irish descent, I love and adore). The New York Yankees are probably a better analogy to use. Although, again, as a member of the majority population, it is easier to accept a nickname that refers to "us" with a disparaging term than it is for a small race of proud people, such as American Indians, to accept a stereotypical depiction of themselves. They simply don't enjoy the strength in numbers that the white majority does to just shrug it off as good clean fun. It's like how it is OK for an American baseball team to be called "Yankees," but it's harder for us to swallow when a Brit, or an Iranian or a Frenchman refers to us as a "Yankee." It just feels different and almost disrespectful when it's coming from them.

Bottom line is that the people we refer to as Sioux are Indian through and through. They speak the Lakota language, they observe the religious rites of their ancestors and honor their blood lines. It is their identity and not just their heritage. There is a difference.

Contrast that with wearing green on March 17 so you don't get pinched, and then going out and getting drunk on green beer and wrapping yourself in Shamrocks once a year. If that's what it takes to be Irish, I think St. Patrick would turn over in his grave.

I love the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, but I think ignorant comments like the one above only do a disservice to the people who want to keep the name and logo and truly honor the tribes at the same time.

Anonymous said...

No, I wasn't born in Ireland. My grandparents were. They and their families left due to famine and when they arrived in Canada and the US, they were discriminated against.

I resent your comments about green beer and shamrocks. I am not a St Paddy's day Irishman. I value my heritage just as much as any other culture. So look who's ignorant now. My point was Native students are afforded more amenities and frankly, opportunities than students of other cultures. I don't think those opportunities should be taken away. I want them to excel and hope their children and grandchildren do as well. But at some point I feel there has to be some accountability to take care of oneself. That isn't calling names. So, you're not Irish, then? I think anon@9:26 was right in calling you out, Mic. He/She made some great points. It makes us look like racists to act the way we do when we make statements like that. To a people we say we are honoring, no less.

Anonymous @ 3:39:

Ahh. The last famine in Ireland was in 1852, at the latest. So, if your grandparents immigrated to the U.S. as a result of famine when they were, say, in their mid 20s, that would put your parents child rearing days between 1868 and 1890. Say, to be generous, you were born on the latter end of that spectrum, in 1890. That would make you 117 or 118 years old. You have got to be the oldest person on Earth, and on top of that, you use a computer. Very impressive.

I'm sorry. I'm going to have to call B.S. on that one, pal.

Anonymous said...

Notice I said they arrived in Canada and the US. And they were great grandparents and grandparents. They settled in Candada, had children and eventually moved to Minnesota. My grandparents were born in the early 1890s, pal.

I didn't say I was Irish. I am of Irish descent. And I'm not offended when you call me Mic.

Pollstar.com just listed hard rock band Disturbed as playing the alerus center on 12-8-08...should be a hard driving great time!

Anonymous said...

I think you made the point for the person that originally tried to set you straight when you say, "I didn't say I was Irish. I am of Irish descent."

They intended to try to point out that you are not, in fact, Irish, and that you are far removed from being Irish, even though you hold some sort of fondness in your heart for having been descended from true Irish people.

I think the point they were making was that American Indians are not just descendants; they are actually the ones being objectified. That makes it far more personal for them than it is for you and your Irish analogy.

Sorry if I am patronizing you. I think you understood without my interpretation. I just thought the person made some interesting points.

Anonymous said...

"I think the point they were making was that American Indians are not just descendants; they are actually the ones being objectified. That makes it far more personal for them than it is for you and your Irish analogy."

So American Indians on the reservation have the same culture as they did 100 yrs ago? Absurd. The Irish analogy fits.

Doc said...

Re: 9:26 AM, October 11, 2008
Your post was right on. The irish analogy doesn't fit.
And to this: American Indians on the reservation have the same culture as they did 100 yrs ago? Absurd. The Irish analogy fits.
That's bullshit. You probably meant to say, 165 years ago because a hundred years ago, we had already FORCED the indians onto reservations. Why is it that just about the whole country can see the problem, but us white folks living in the same region don't get it. Not only are we offensive, but ignorant too.
