Open Thread #6

As the semester starts to wind down at UND, I'm just too busy to do much blogging.

This will have to do for a day or so. What's on your mind?

Topics covered: downtown chimes, flags at Perkin's, Opera House Lofts, opening of Bobbie's, "Heels Boutique North", new Westward Ho tenant?, new downtown establishments

Two things: A church in downtown plays the Star Spangled Banner around 5:00pm. Love it! Gives me a patriotic boost every time I hear it. Secondly, why don't both Perkins fly the flags that they used to? Miss them......

Anyone hear if a restaurant has signed on for the space in the Opera House apartments?

"Secondly, why don't both Perkins fly the flags that they used to? Miss them......"

People were calling complaining that they were sucking up all the potential wind power.

Okay, as for the previously mentioned piano bar in the last thread, I believe it is going in the St. Johns building on the corner of Demers and 4th. I'm sorry if I've got the streets wrong, but it is down the block from Joe Black's, Gilly's, etc. Also, I heard a rumor at one time that the Parrot's Cay was building a downtown location, possibly in the Operahouse apts. Again I apologize if I'm misinformed.

Any word on what type of restaurant is going into the old Westward Ho?

Has anyone been to Bobby's? What kind of prices do they have?

They stopped flying them? I hadn't noticed. They were nice looking flags, but weren't they a tad on the big side? I always had the nagging feeling that the restaurants might have been flying the huge flags in an attempt at saying, "Look at us. We have a huge American flag. We're very patriotic, so you should give us your business." Maybe they never had any motive other than actually showing their national pride, but I did wonder from time to time...

I've heard rumors about this piano bar coming downtown, but I hadn't heard a location yet. I have heard from time to time that something is coming to the St. John's Block so maybe that is this piano bar. I once heard that a gourmet grocery store was also looking at space in the building. I wonder if a piano bar would be able to make a go of it downtown. I would think a grocery store might have better businesses, but who knows.

As far as the Opera House. Yes, it seems as though the Parrot's Cay was going to move in there, but then got scared off by the high rent. Too bad. That space has sat empty for far too long. As far as I know, all of the apartments are rented.

BTW, this might sound totally dumb, but I haven't been downtown for weeks. Has construction started on the new apartment building ("The Current") next to the Uptown/Downtown?

There does seem to be some work going on at the old Ho property. I can't believe that anybody would want to rent/buy that space. It seems like it would be so much better if somebody just tore the building down and built something new.

Bobbies pricing is what is to be expected for high-quality womens clothing. $60-$80 for a nice pair of pants, sweaters from $50-$150. Just depend on what you want.

Parrots Cay did have plans to move into the Opera House at one point but got some VERY good advice and stayed away based on rent.

I'm interested in hearing more about a piano/war bar in St. Johns Block. If it's done right, I could spend some time in there. Sanders is always so busy and Toasted Frog is great but lacks the piano ambiance...

What sets a place like Bobbies apart from, say Macy's at a similar price point, is that you can get to know the buyer/owner and she you. That means you can have an affect on what she buys. Plus I like the idea of buying local.

Anyone know anything about a Pizza place coming downtown? The old Sanders spot near the Urban has a builing permit sign in the window and I think it says something about pizza.

Rhombus Pizza...great place...two entrepeneurs from Thief River Falls who established an above-average restaurant there and a pizza place in Mentor, near Maple Lake.

Hmm... piano bar. Anybody know anyone local that actually does the piano gig or are they going to be hiring bands?

There is enough talent locally to fill the need for entertainment...
People like you Matt!

Glass Half Full...

Thanks!

Do I know you?

Anyway, the reason I'm asking is to find out if the proprietors have anybody in mind (I would if I was starting a piano bar) or if I should approach them.

Cool concept, I hope it flies!

Try living down there. It's not a church that plays it, and they play either the Star-Spangled Banner or God Bless America every hour on the hour.

It drives me more crazy than the trains.

A new shoe store called Heels Boutique North is set to open in March 2007 next to Bobbie's.

Mattfacingsouth -
If I were you I would approach the owners/managers of the piano bar. I don't know who that is tho...
If they aren't local they would not be aware of local talent.
Go in the building someday and ask the contractors who is in charge.

What building downtown plays the songs? I always thought it sounded like a church - Do they even play it late at night??

I love to hear all the chatter about downtown...

I believe the bells come from the speakers on top of the ?office furniture store? at S 4th and DeMers. I could be wrong. I live right there, and have not seen a church in the area so far.

I believe these are the bells that are on top of the Norby's bldg. Is that ture? They're still functional? For a little history lesson...This is the old Grand Forks Federal Bank bldg and that's where the system originated. Us old Grand Forkers know these as "The 5 O'clock Bells".

Anonymous said...

Ah, we are Grand Forkers, aren't we?

;)

GrandForksGuy said...

I was never sure if those bells were coming for the Norby's Work Perks building or from St. Mary's just south of downtown...

Anonymous said...

Some bells and music comes from the church across the street from the mission (what used to be Dakota Science Center).

I heard the Parrot's Cay was looking at the old Planet Pizza building, but Rydell's outbid them. It's good to see that that huge lot will be used for something, even if it is another autoglass place.

Matt BK said...

I'd be happy enough if they only played the bells at 5 o'clock, but I've heard them just about every hour from 8 a.m. on.

True or False?

After registering for on-line access to The Forum, or The Herald, when you log on to an areavoices blog, and post as an "anon", the area voices blog administrators can verify your identity?

I was told this is true.

Holy cowinky-dinky...

The base of the "bells" are visible in this picture.
I believe they were gifted to the bank by Armin Rohde.

I think that building looked a lot better as a bank ;-) . . . but still didn't llok like a bank.

Yup, those are the so-called 'bells' I am talking about.

Whew! Thank goodness that's been solved.
