Carmike update

Remember my recent post about all of those seemingly forgotten movie theater projects that were once slated for Grand Forks? Well, it looks like at least one of those projects should be taking place after all. I recently received word from a corporate manager at Carmike Cinemas stating that the remodel/retrofit of the Carmike 10 in Grand Forks is still planned. However, no timetable seemed to be available. Still, the representative seemed genuinely sure that the project would take place in the near future. Let's hope so.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who has been complaining about the less than adequate movie theater experience Carmike has been providing the citizens of Grand Forks. I've heard that there have been several visits from representatives of the Carmike home office in Georgia to the Grand Forks theaters lately. I'm guessing that complaints have been rolling into the company in recent months as the theaters seem to be going a little more downhill all of the time.

I really hope the Carmike 10 project gets going before too long and I hope that the Grand Forks theaters can get there act together. Then again, I'm probably being far too naive...

Maybe I should raise my standards, but I don't fret too much about the Midco 10 being remodeled. I go when there's a decent movie playing and I'm really just there for the movie.

Staduim seating, personal arm rests, reclining seats, etc. are all very nice, but I am most concerned about the quality of the film and its presentation. Is it playing at the right speed, are there any distracting holes or patches in the screen, and is the rattling bass of the movie next door going to intrude upon the quiet scene in my film? These are priorities to me.

But, if they're going to put any money the place they may as well do it right and all at once - and relatively quickly as the likely substitute theatre of Columbia 4 is an even poorer state of affairs.

Oh god, Carmike is terrible. The 10 used to be alright, but now it is a sorry excuse for a theater, what with dirty theaters, slow service, and extremely high prices.

They sort of have a monopoly for theaters in town. Since they own the 4 and the 10, there's really not any competition.

What about a "cheap" theater. Went to the Safari in Moorhead and saw a good movie and paid $1.75. At that price I don't mind paying the high price for the popcorn and pop. Plus I don't mind if the movie isn't a new release. I can wait for it to come to the cheap theater.

I just got home from attending a movie at the Midco 10. Don't they know what heat is, it must have been 40 or lower in the theater. When I talked to someone about it they said it would be taken care of. During the show it just seemed to get colder. When I tried to find someone later the building was empty.

Anyone have a heated blanket? I'll need one the next time I go to the 10. It was extremely cold there tonight. Terrible service and now cold theaters. How much do we need to complain before the theater is properly run.

Carmike in Grand Forks has to be the worst. Its dirty and smells like farts. The concessions are all nasty and way overpriced. Plus its overrun with smarta** punk kids that think they can serve people. Save your money and time and drive a little further to Fargo for a good time.

Hey, half-hour drive away, Crookston's two-screen Grand Theater recently came under new management and updated the former opera-house-converted-to-film to a stadium-seating theater. The renovations continue, but the management is doing what they can to maintain their claim to "The oldest continuously running theater in the US." Prices for both matinee & evening are about half what you'd pay for the same time in Grand Forks, with movies that are either "on the break" or released within the last few weeks. Concession prices are also better than other theaters, as well as sports venues, etc. It is actually affordable to bring a family of five to a movie in Crookston, without taking out a second mortgage on your house.
