Bank Forward to open two GF banks

According to Monday's Herald, a Hannaford, North Dakota based bank will soon be opening two locations in Grand Forks. Bank Forward, which has eight North Dakota locations and three Minnesota locations, plans to open a pair of Grand Forks locations - one on the north end and one on the south end.

The southern location will be at the intersection of South Coulmbia Road and 47th Avenue South. Currently, that intersection is basically undeveloped and contains no commercial presence. It will be interesting to see this intersection develop. I wonder where the northern location will be...University Village?

These aren't the only new banks coming to Grand Forks. Choice Financial is opening a second location and Well Fargo has announced plans to open a third location. Both banks will be located in the new commercial development taking place on South Washington Street across from the Aurora Medical Park.

I've always heard that it's a good thing to see new banks open up in a city. More people and more money in the community = new banks. During its 1990s growth spurt, it seemed like many new banks opened in Fargo. Hopefully, so many new banks setting up shop in Grand Forks is a sign of growth.

Update - 3/26/2007 - 2:00 AM
Here's an interesting story about the new Walker, Minnesota Bank Forward location. A sign that the bank put up in front of this new location proved to be so controversial that a city council member even resigned after a debate.

Note to Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission: look very carefully at any signs that Bank Forward wants to erect!

Wells Fargo isn't going to be in the same commercial space as Choice Financial, which is a stand alone building apart from the strip mall / office on south Washington. Wells Fargo looks (at least according to their sign) to be building their own facility on the corner of Washington and 47th.

Regarding the Walker article,

Good ol Boys club, indeed...

I said both banks will be located in the new commercial development. By "development", I meant the overall development that is taking place in that area. Any word yet on when Wells Fargo is going to stat their building?

Or, for that matter, the new Valley Dairy? They're going to have to tear apart that farmstead before they build the new Valley Dairy...

I wll bet anyone a hundred dollars that no one at Choice knows Lou Pearlman!

The sign has been there for two years with absolutely nothing done, so who knows. I guess we can make a guess, based on whether the guy plants his beets there this spring.

Or, for that matter, the new Valley Dairy?

They were doing some prep work over there a couple of weeks ago, I would expect the house to be gone shortly and full blown construction by May. Maybe they'll torch the house and let the fire department use it as a training exercise... can't imagine that it's worth moving.

The real question in this vicinity, though, is whether 47th and Washington will be getting a stop light this summer, whether they'll give 47th west of Washington the "lower and widen" treatment that the road east got last year, and whether they'll put the speed limit back to 35 on the new section.

I've seen the arguments, but the current speed limit is ridiculously slow, particularly when both feeders are 40MPH.

It's not a particularly safely-designed road for how busy it is. I take it every day and reflect on just that.

One problem you'll never get around is that there's a middle school right there and it's being encroached upon by houses from each direction. Thusly, you may never see the 40, but FWIW, I agree.

Except that the 40MPH is on the road that has the middle school. They turned the road (the "east of Washington" bit) that has no school or driveways (well, there are two, but still,) and dropped the speed limit from 35 to 30. Makes no sense, and very few people drive 30, because it's a long strech of fairly empty road.

I would think that there must be a traffic signal and road construction in the works for that area. I also take that road nearly every day and in the last couple of years traffic has gone from a trickle to being quite a bit. Sometimes it is like playing Frogger to get onto/across south Washington from 47th. With all the new construction underway and what is planned, I hope the city is taking steps to plan a safer intersection there.
