I see Kelly is beginning to clean house at UND. Harmeson back to the Business School. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Anonymous said...

Noticed there was a house fire right across from the football field of Valley Middle School this morning.

Anonymous said...

I hope you will all hear about the heroic efforts of the first police officer on the scene. Another fine example of good work done by our police department. He went in and helped get the elderly female out of the house. He suffered smoke inhailation and had to be taken to the hospital. I hear he is doing fine, but I also hope his efforts are publicized and credited to him. (anyone from WDAZ reading this?)

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, from listening to phil harmeson, he is arrogant. I don't care for his holier than thou attitude.

Anonymous said...

Harmeson is a bag of gas. My deepest sympathy to he college of bus/admin.

Where do I find the daily clues at for the Hugo’s Potato Bowl Pete Hidden Medallion Contest?? I can't find them on the Herald's website or on the Potato Bowl's website...

Anonymous said...

Apparently, we aren't done with the last open thread. We'll be back as soon as we are done with #93...

Anonymous said...

This town could use a children's thrift store like they have in Fargo. I think that type of business would be very profitable in this community.

Anonymous said...

I believe you have to actually purchase a newspaper to get the clues. I don't think the Hugo clues are located on-line.

Anonymous said...

clues on KNOX, turn to 1310. Mack.

Anonymous said...

The clue was also read on XL93 this morning I believe they said they would read it at 7:20am or around there

Anonymous said...

I have the paper and I can't find the clue in it anywhere. Help!

Anonymous said...

I want to hear more about the Harmeson Demotion.

Unknown said...

Clues are found also at Hugo's locations in the produce section (near the potatoes).

Anonymous said...

The harmeson demotion should have happened a long time ago....

Anonymous said...

"I want to hear more about the Harmeson Demotion."

Sounds like Kelly wants to choose his own yes-man.

From today's Strib:
"The movie theaters at the Mall of America are undergoing a makeover that includes love seats for snuggling, a VIP theater with food and liquor service brought to moviegoers' seats, and 3D capabilities.

The theaters, their operation passing from AMC Theatres to mall management, have been closed since Sept. 1 while upgrades are made. The changes will debut Friday afternoon.

All 14 theaters will have "high-back rocker love seats," meaning each seat can "fit more than one person," Bridget Jewell, a mall spokeswoman, said this afternoon.

Alcohol will be available on a limited basis, Jewell said, in the 170-seat VIP theater. VIP patrons will have individual tables attached to their seats and be offered food and beverage service. That theater is restricted to moviegoers 21 and older."

Oboy. I can't wait to see the posts now! :o) No, wait; we'll have to see if Fargo follows Mlps first!

That's how Clifford lasted out there more then 20 years. But finding people with that qualification wasn't easy.

Non-stop flights from Orlando to Fargo! Woot!!!

It's about damn time! Now, coming home for some snow at Christmas won't cost so much.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I think you should stay in Orlando. If you cant come home for snow from orlando like everyone else, without whining, then you can't afford to come home.

Anonymous said...

OK, I'll be the first to post about your Strib story. Who gives a rat's ass!?

Anonymous said...

I went to Hugo's on S Washington today and could not find the potato medallion clue. As I went through the checkout, I asked the cashier and got a vacant look and this reply: "Uhh....I dunno. It's supposed ta be hangin' up someplace."

Nice. I was on my way to my second job and didn't have time to waste asking to speak to a manager.

Wow - if Hugo's goal for this promotion is to waste their customer's time and make them angry - it worked!

Anonymous said...

Yup, I was at the meeting and the GM at hugos couldln't emphasize enough the importance of wasting customers time, especially yours. He was also quoted as saying that if they could make customers angry, it would only be a bonus.
You need to relax and stop wasting your time at the store and start listening to the radio, that is where they actually read the clue to you...

Anonymous said...

I went to mcdonalds for breakfast and my order came up to 3.75. First of all, the order came up to 4.06 because she didn't listen when i made the order. Second time in days that she did that. So when i pull up to the next window, i gave her 2.00 in quartes and a 1.00 bil and 4 dimes. 3.80
I said, "dont I get change?" She said, "didnt you give me 3.75?"
I said, "didnt you count it?"
She shrugged her shoulders. I said "that figures" and drove to the next window. Do you think it makes sense to tell the manager? Wonder what you think?

Anonymous said...

let me correct myself please. Now that I write this, I realize that I short changed her. Well, hell, never mind then. Everything worked out fine...

"Personally, I think you should stay in Orlando. If you cant come home for snow from orlando like everyone else, without whining, then you can't afford to come home."

Ok, so... um.....what the Hell are you talking about?

Exactly how was I whining about anything? I'm just glad I can take a non-stop flight from FL to ND now. I've always had to stop in Atlanta or Minneapolis in order to fly up there. Now, I don't have to.

Jeez, this blog HAS gotten rough lately. Wow.

Anonymous said...

If you are eating at McDonalds two days in a row you deserve to get short-changed.

Anonymous said...

>You need to relax and stop wasting your time at the store and start listening to the radio, that is where they actually read the clue to you...

Sorry - my workplace forbids radios during the workday. Gee, forgive me for doing exactly what Hugo's wanted - getting customers into their store - and then complaining when they don't follow through. My bad.

Anonymous said...

To anon at 8:21

Read what you said you gave the person at McDonald's. My math comes up with $3.40 not $3.80 as you suggest. Who got short changed?

Anonymous said...

Kelly-
I was happy to see the new flights to Orlando also!! Come home anytime.
Bring that sunshine and Florida goodness!

Man, that Alerus Center concert fund issue must be an ugly one. The Herald won't touch it and the City Beat reporter deletes any mentions on his blog immediately.

"If you are eating at McDonalds two days in a row you deserve to get short-changed."

Anonymous said...

RE: "Gee, forgive me for doing exactly what Hugo's wanted - getting customers into their store - and then complaining when they don't follow through. My bad."

I don't think Hugo's is trying to screw you over. You spoke with ONE unknowledgable employee who may have been brand new or just back from a vacation...who knows?!

Certainly there must have been other cashiers or bag boys you could've asked? It seems to me that you're just looking for a problem here.

The medallion game is supposed to be FUN. Calm down and lighten up.

Anonymous said...

The Herald is doing a wonderful job of publishing letters to the editor slamming Republicans this election cycle. The childish vitriol is way over the top. I wonder how these people will feel when Obama gets smoked come November. Dems nominated a candidate unfit to be President. Plain and simple. That's why they lose.

When you're "fit" for office, you don't keep fighting a war based on lies. When you're "fit" you know the difference between Shia and Sunni. When you're "fit" for office, you don't turn your back on the very veterans you claim to support. You seem to have a very odd definition of "fitness".

Just FYI...there is a LOT of traffic in EGF at 7:30 in the morning. This is when kids are on their way to school. I saw a kid almost get taken out this morning and he was crossing in a crosswalk. Please be careful out there. I know everyone thinks EGF is a tiny little nothing of a town and they can just speed through it but our children's lives are more valuable than getting where you're going 1 minute sooner. Please slow down.

Gilly's is the worst bar ever created. that tiny little bouncer with the napoleon complex needs to get a boot to the face real quick. some of the stuff that guy does is ridiculous. gotta make up for all those shortcomings somehow i guess.

Anonymous said...

Re: 8:47 AM, September 11, 2008
turning your back on veterans would be pulling out of iraq before the job is done. If you do what obama wants, you would also be turning your backs on the families of lost soldiers.

Anonymous said...

RE: Seb

Gilly's is reserved for skanky, diseased-ridden females and the men who love to contract their diseases.

I went there once and if it weren't for my friends wanting to stay there (might I add the only reason for that was because it was a Monday night and they kept getting free drinks from the "beat the bartender" game), I would have walked right out.

I'd rather give my business to the Toasted Frog.

Anonymous said...

Yes, that damn little short bouncer is soo annoying! He takes his job seriously, is diligent, and makes an effort to keep out minors and other people who cause problems for his business. He almost never resorts to violence and will give you an explanation for anything. He needs a boot to the face so he can learn to be like other bouncers who let in all the 18 and 19 year old freshman. Also not prevent fights but make sure to "clean" them up. (cough cough Joe Blacks)

Anonymous said...

If you do what obama wants, you would also be turning your backs on the families of lost soldiers.

Yeah - more deaths of US soldiers is the answer. Who will be the last to die for our mistake? The "insurgency" is Iraqis. The Sunnis are Iraqis, The Shia are Iraqis. They all want us out.

Anonymous said...

8:23, The Herald widely covered the concert fund story at the beginning. The story was, The Alerus Commission convinced the City Council that small to midsize arena acts were bypassing Grand Forks. The council gave them $200,000 to promote their own shows. Well, a year later, the funds were gone and The Herald was very excited to report that The Alerus made a profit. There wasn't ever any coverage about the fund. They never produced any shows. I suspect the funds were just washed into operations and the citizens were scammed out of 200K.

And I have to ask, why WAS the WTC attacked? I know it was people who hate America..but why do they hate us so much?

Anonymous said...

"but why do they hate us so much?"

Start with propaganda; it's worked for millenia. In this case, take advantage of the Mideastern belief that "My enemy's friend is my enemy." Then feed people a constant diet of the US keeping Israel afloat...supplying arms which kill innocent Arabs. Doesn't matter how accurate it is; most people won't bother to do research. After that, it's pretty easy to achieve another central aspect of Mideastern culture: vengeance.

Anonymous said...

ec99, I agree. As Bill O'Reilly stated we are in Iraq because of Jewish Lobby in USA and Isreal. That is the reason they hate us ! greenglass4

Anonymous said...

Hey greenglass4,
Iraq didn't crash planes into the United States... In case you weren't aware of that.

Iraq hates us because the US wouldn't mind their own business and stay out of the Iraqi war... This is from the mouths of Iraqi citizens.

anon 6:45,
i was with a group of friends and unfortunately some of them wanted to go to gilly's. the guy carded all of us, but looked at one of our friend's ID for a very long time...grilled him about every little thing on the ID, and then he said " I don't believe you" and threw my friend's ID on the road. Yeah he's just doing his job right? My friend looks nearly IDENTICAL to the picture in his ID, it was ridiculous. He was going out of his way to be a jerk. My friend was completely civil during all of this, walked in the road to pick up his ID and we went somewhere else. Go ahead and assume that there's more to the story, but I can assure you that's it. He could've just not let him in, but no he had to be a tough guy and throw his ID in the street. Real classy establishment they run at Gilly's.

When did they stop having the Potato Bowl parade?

Anonymous said...

"I know it was people who hate America..but why do they hate us so much?"

Because we are infidels. They will continue to hate all of us until we convert to Islam. It's the cornerstone of their religion and repeated throughout the Q'uoran. Some of them are more serious about the Q'uoran than others and those are the ones that convince others to fly airplanes into buildings.

Saddam Hussein was a known supporter of the those that supported killing infidels.

Saddam Hussein had a secular government that tolerated religion but it wasn't a theocratic state. Iraq today is much closer to becoming a Islamic state than it ever was under Saddam.

As for Iran, we helped overthrow a democratically elected president...Mossadegh (not sure about spelling) because he was going to nationalize the oil industry.

Can't we admit, as both John McCain and Sarah Palin have, that our foreign policy is governed by oil. Yet all we can think to do, is drill, baby, drill. Sad.

There are other religions in Iraq. There are Catholic churches for sure and I believe a couple other. I know an Iraqi interpreter that goes to a Catholic church in Iraq.

@ 5:45: read Assassin's Gate by George Packer or Political Islam: Revolution, Radicalism, or Reform? by John Esposito for Iraq's history under Saddam.

Then turn on the news.

Saddam only tried to go away from secularism near the end of his reign because he was afraid of the Shi'a in his own country.

Today there is a great divide between Sunni and Shi'a in Iraq - one that you never really saw before because Saddam oppressed their animosities toward one another. Muqtada al Sadr and Ayatollah al-Sistani are very much in control of large portions of Iraq.

Exactly,

Saddam was a Saddamist. He built palaces and statues to honor himself, not Islam. Saddam saw an embrace of Islam as a way to rally support against UN sanctions and our impending invasion.

does any one know what the big blinking X out by the airport is for? Its on the other side of the runway over where the construction is going on. Just curious.

Wonder why the breakin at Andy's Cycle wan't reported ? 2 glass front doors were broken this morning before 6 am. What is missing ?

Still Fighting It said...

@ 3:30

There is an existing North-South runway behind the new East-West runway under construction. It's close enough to the new runway and also involved in the construction (via connecting taxiways and such) that it warrants being closed. The X tells pilots not to land there.
