As for McCain's VP pick's daughter being pregnant...crazy. I'm surprised that he knew about this before he even picked her for a VP and didn't think it would affect his campaign. Personally, it wouldn't make any difference in my decision, but I'm also not a McCain supporter. I do wonder what all the hardcore religious supporters of McCain will think.
I've got something. Has anyone seen that blonde female panhandler who hangs around the intersection by Walmart and the guy who frequents the intersection near Target? Well apparently they're a team who drive away in a white car once their 'workday' is finished. My husband is working on one of the construction sites near there and one of the other workers told him about them and their white car. He actually saw them drive away, and then, believe it or not, ran into them at the Gateway Hugos where they were buying chips and...surprise, surprise... a big bag of ice. Everytime I see those people beggging for change on the southend I want to give them the address of LaborReady; anyone can get a day's work there. And apparently they can drive on over in their white car.
Any thoughts on the Mayville couple that call themselves "swingers"? Both were having "flings" with others, but now she claims it was "gang rape" when she met up with some guys at a bar and went back to their apartment. I think County Social Services should take their 4 children (ages 4 months to 14) and look at foster care for awhile. Father was in SD on grain harvesting crew while mother was bar hopping during a street dance. Friends have seen 7 page statement she wrote, 4 guys not charged yet. What is up here ? greenglass4
what is up greenglass is really hard to tell...the Herald for some reason turned into Penthouse Letters for the Sunday edition. It is awfully hard to prove that she didn't consent to the activity when she says she "blacked out". She was looking for a fling and found one, I suppose. Beyond that the stories I am sure conflict between what she says and what the males have said. It is awfully hard to prove otherwise, I would suppose.
Hey, there's a new business (website) in town that's offering a VERY affordable way to advertise with online TV ads. They'll also show businesses how to use internet advertising and some other tips to drive customers to their businesses. You might get a kick out of it: www.BuzzGrandForks.com
Isn't the teen pregnancy rate in Alaska higher than the rest of the U.S? I thought I read that somewhere.
I also think it's hilarious that the guy that once worked at Dunkin' Donuts (Obama) is being painted as an elitist, while the guy that owns 12 houses (McCain) is supposed to be sympathetic to the working class.
capitalize on tourism. capitalize on the wind...it is not rocket science Take what you have and utilize it for your benefit. Geesh
Does anyone notice how many Manitobians there are here on the weekends??? Where there are shoppers there will be capitalism...duh
I would rather drive the 2 blocks to EGF than the hour to 2 FAR 2 GO in order to shop or eat or have a little fun so building a mega mall in EGF WOULD be profitable...contrary to opinion of locals that have never left the farm.
Some of you have your facts wrong. Target no longer owns their old space at Columbia Mall and now has no say over what can and what can't go into that space. Target sold the space to GK Development (the mall's current owners) a couple of years ago.
On an unrelated note, I wanted to thank you folks on the boards here for the dentist recommendation. I saw Dr. Swanson today for the first time and was very happy with the outcome.
So what is the holdup with GK developement? What are the current projects in work here in Grand Forks?
I thought it quite interesting to read in the Herald yesterday that the developement of the wind turbine project in Cuckaburrayaya? was being held up by the fall harvest. What? All progress shall halt to thresh? Then it will halt for winter, and then for spring thaw, and then for spring planting...there seems to be a pattern emerging
Maybe in another 100 years GF will be up to the speed of...nah it'll never be there
It's quite pitiful really that so many Canadians pass by on their way to FARGO and this town has nothing more to offer
I find it funny how some people have such a complex on this board. I'm not sure if you think Grand Forks should have as much to offer at Minneapolis, New York City, LA or what? If you hate GF so much, please leave.
The place isn't that bad, it's a nice little town with great summer weather, very safe, affordable cost of living, and everything is 15 minutes or less away. The people are generally very nice, and the work ethic around here is very impressive.
However, the reason I'm leaving as soon as I get my MA completed is that I just don't care for how it's not very diverse here and most people are only comfortable with clean-cut persons exhibiting exclusively Christian beliefs.
Not that you'll be lynched here..but if you're a Buddhist, homosexual, Muslim, punk rocker, Pagan, ect... this place gets very lonely very fast. Even some of my African-American friends have said while they aren't directly discriminated against here, people are more closed-off to them here than any other region. It's really a problem with this region as a whole (and is WAY worse in the small towns), but it's still a problem affecting GF. The attitude around here needs to shift to more of a "live, and let live" philosophy.
...and call me crazy, but I just don't care for Football or Hockey. I don't have anything against sports, it's just not my thing, and I'm definitely not the only one who feels that way.
I am one...but obviously not the only one that is frustrated with GF.
Problem is I've TRIED to leave...unless I want to spend every penny of years of savings to get out from under the house that we purchased a year ago when there was no other decent housing available...and in the middle of winter with 3 kids housing is a NEED not a WANT. We are kinda stuck here for a while to wait it out until things change...it could be a while so forgive me if I am interested in actually spending that time not driving to Fargo.
GF is a very decent town, good friendly people for the most part but there is a bit of a generation gap in the mentality of the pace of modernization. For the older generation it is growing too fast, for the middle age seniors it is growing just right, and for all others it is just stagnant.
There is NOTHING for kids to do around here...the kids that don't like hockey anyway. GASP, COUGH GAG Yes, its true there are people (aka tax paying citizens) in this town that DO NOT LOVE HOCKEY!!!
If there were a way outta here you wouldn't have to hear me whine but since I am stuck in this hick hole of a town for a while I have the priveledge to share my 2cents too.
Maybe you can sell your home as a FSBO. What are the nearest cross streets and what do you think the market value is at this time? What do you owe? Are values in the neighborhood declining?
I once thought the same about Grand Forks and I left this town, thinking I would never see it again, but as my life and experiences moved me across this country I realized Grand Forks was a much better place than I had previously thought. It definitely lacks diversity as others have pointed out. It isn't big enough to offer a lot of the activities some people want and need. But I find the positives far outweigh the negatives. "The grass is greener my ass"
I am not a native of the area...but have been here for 10+ years...and all the things anon said at 1001 am post in the first paragraph is why I like this town. I want to raise my kids in an open frame of mind...but in an area where there is not much differences between myself and the neighbors...sameness is a good think to me at least. That doesnt mean at all that I am against anyone different from moving in...but overall I feel a closer knit community is one in which people share similar values (similar does not mean same).
What there is to do in town for kids is something I have seen/heard throughout my years living in other areas of the country, including outside metro areas. The city has many many programs for kids and others warm and cold season. I guess when I grew up there weren't so many structured activities and kids just played outside in the backyard digging holes, or playing dogdge ball or hide n seek or whatever.
I guess I would like to know what people want for kids to do? I can think of the zoo in Fargo as something we dont have that Fargo does...but whatelse? Their mall is bigger but their play area for little kids is not much bigger (if not smaller). Cant kids nowadays just hang out at home and have fun?
Just my rambling thoughts...
Nothing wrong with improving the community and all ideas are worthwhile...but I do wish some would stop trying to make GF into something it's not. It is a small town/small city nothing more nothing less.
We have considered FSBO but we have put more into trying to fix all of our homes issues than we could ever hope to recoup which is one pill but to market it right now in an oversaturated market would mean having to take a cut on the price we paid a year ago. Its a no win situation for us.
We purchased in winter when we couldn't see, touch and feel a lot of major issues that we are facing right now. We feel our realtor "influenced" us to pay a higher price than what we though was reasonable because we were desperate to find housing at the time. There wasn't the selection of houses that there is now so we chose what we thought was the best at the time, knowing it was a temporary thing and hoping we could turn around and at least break even when we needed to move.
We've lived all over the world and while GF certainly has a LOT of potential and a lot of good things going for it, it could be so much better. I am sorry for being so negative, I grew up in a farm town, got out as soon as I possibly could and never thought I'd be here in this place in life that I find myself. Not being able to do a darn thing about it really sucks. This place is very depressing. There is no place to just go hang out with your family and have some fun other than the mall and it stinks (literally)
Most people under 50 that I've talked to in this town share my sentiments about there being a lack of things to do around here. I just don't understand why.
A lot of people talk about the greenway but I don't really see what there is to do there? It's a bike trail/walking path, a couple small playgrounds and toilets... Sorry, but that's not much. My 1 1/2 year old isn't into bird watching or fishing and there are plenty of mosquitoes. (Child is allergic) Am I missing something on this oh so famous greenway????
Maybe this has been answered, but what do you like to do? You won't go out if it is dark, windy, rainy or snowy. You don't like the mall (because it smells?). What in god's name will you do?
What do I want???? Hmmm...let me think for a sec...
Parks, Zoos, Toy Stores, Indoor playlands that are cleaned on occassion, indoor pools, Malls with multiple levels and activities, Restaurants (other than Subway) GO CARTS, Indoor kids playland such as Jeepers or miniture versions of the mall of america would be great...I know that is asking a lot but it is a great dream. I'm sure I can think of more such as educational classes, scouts, childrens museums, etc.
Hansen cycle marine has been sold. Sold to the owners of revolutions based out of minot.... look for a new buidling coming up by revolutions in the next 4 years. this is a fact not a rumor.
At least things will be much better for us that like grand forks when the whiners leave... As for you with the one and a half year old that isn't into bird watching or fishing, what is he into? I'm sure it is not much at that age. Don't let the door.....
You guys forgot to mention rape, robbery, murder, prostitutes, pimps, drug houses, gangs, car jackings, etc. There may be a time you wished you were back in grand forks...
uh wasn't there just a case of gang banging/rape in the news this past Sunday? What about the murder on the greyhound bus? This state isn't perfect. Crime exists everywhere. I've lived in big cities and I felt quite safe there.
I trust the protection of our police officers and I'm very thankful for their sacrifice on behalf of my families safety.
I don't see what that has to do with having FAMILY oriented entertainment here. There are plenty of bars, banks and sports arenas, what about other interests? Why is that such a horrible thing to ask for?
For all the people who don't enjoy staring at a river the greenway is a waste of money. For those who do, why don't you move out to the country if that's what you love so much. I enjoy GF in general, I just hate the greenway.
haha...just because you leave grand forks for a bigger city does NOT mean that you'll be raped, murdered, mugged, stabbed, shot, or have any other crazy shananigans happen to you
Pretty funny: growing diverse cities, but you get car jacked, mugged, raped, stabbed, murders, robbery, pimps, shot, drug houses etc. etc. And all you Greenway Haters: get a life outdoors ! The Greyhound Bus was in Canada and the "alleged" gang rape in Mayville no charges yet, she went looking for a "fling" just setting things straight. Waiting for Gov Palin's speech! greenglass4
"For all the people who don't enjoy staring at a river the greenway is a waste of money."
Its there because of the dike, doofus, its not as if the city has a choice. They could probably save a couple of bucks by not maintaining it, but then you'd have people complaining about the mosquitos and poor image that it gives the city.
I like the short commutes, low violent crime rate, and friendly people people in Grand Forks. I wish the entire population of the f-ing planet would move here so they could enjoy these things too.
Re: Sorry, but that's not much. My 1 1/2 year old isn't into bird watching or fishing and there are plenty of mosquitoes. (Child is allergic)
How about this for your 18 month old. Coloring books, lincoln logs, barbie dolls, tinkertoys, take them to a movie, blah blah blah. What do you have for your kid to do at HOME? I would bet not much because it sounds as if it is our responsibility to entertain your kid. Start at home. By the way, please answer that question that someone posed to you. What do YOU do for entertainment? When you leave, please remember this website and please report back as to what you find for you and your kid to do.
You've lived all over the world and you finally decded to buy a house in grand forks? A place that lost all of it's entry level housing to the flood. You could have rented an apartment and dont tell me there isnt anything available, that's b.s. You bought a house here because you planned on staying here. If not, why did you buy the house? Let's face it, you didnt know what you were doing when you bought your house, so quit blaming everyone else for your miistakes!!
I am the one with the 1 1/2 year old and I am NOT the one wanting to move. I just hate that everyone loves the greenway so much when it costs millions of dollars for it to have a paved bike path. Mow it, set out some picnic tables, and be done is my opinion. I find plenty to do in this town with my child. There are parks not located on the greenway that we frequent (much bigger), we go to story time at the library, I spend a couple bucks in quarters and he rides the little rides at the mall, occasionally we go to the indoor play area at the mall, there is a play area in the library we visit, and we go to the water park on university. If there is something in this town for children to do that I am missing please someone post it. I am always looking for new ideas NOT ON THE GREENWAY.
Life is full of trade offs. You want the big city activities you get the big city traffic, crime and all that comes with living in a city. I would love to know what communities have it all. Anyone?
I knew the apartment card would be thrown out eventually. Yes, we could be spending the same amount on an apartment as we do our home, possibly a bit less and have the option to leave when we want to...but I could list a hundred reasons why not to rent an apartment. We checked out rentals, townhouses etc upon arrival to GF and found that they are way overpriced and very run down. Sorry that we have standards. Being our third home purchase you'd think we would have learned how to not get suckered but alas there is a lot to learn about buying a house here. Building codes do not seem to mean a whole lot, nor does quality. If we had known what we know now we would not have purchased a home here because no we do not now or did we ever plan to stay here longterm.
As far as things to do, no it is not the taxpayers job to entertain the community...having entertainment would be an asset to the taxpayer, bringing in valuable revenue and possibly lowering your homestead taxes. Why not have more businesses that can share the load and take some of it off the homeowners shoulders?
speaking of crime and traffic...there was a gosh awful LOT of traffic in EGF this morning. And my kid almost getting ran over in the street may not be a crime but it is a major concern of mine. Still think small towns are safer?
That just has to do with the absent minded way grand forks drivers wheel around town. I can't ride my bicycle for more than a few miles without having to yield to people who aren't paying attention.
I just moved back from TX 3 months ago (for good this time!)so I don't know if my opinion counts but I have a 21 month old and we find plenty to do around here. I live right beside the greenway and don't use it much either. It's good for biking and walks though. I plan on using it a lot more next summer because I was planning on getting one of those trailer things you pull behind your bike. I will just make sure and stay away from the guy in the last blog who might hit me. Here is a list of things we have found to do in GF with kids: playgrounds all over town, outdoor water park on University, indoor playground at the mall, we walk through the humane society and look at the puppies and kitties, the libraries play area and story hour, 2 motels with indoor waterparks, YMCA pool and play area, I think the gymnastics place by center court has open times during the week, and I am out of ideas. Small children can't do movies without ruining it for others, the theatres should do a family night at one movie. I know we would go! The only place I can think of that has tons to do and no crime is Fort Hood, TX. We just moved from there and that post is great for families. Too bad you can't just live there! I am always looking for more to do so if someone could post any other ideas please do so!!! My child has a sensitivity to mosquitos too so I know what it's like for anon 3:05, but there is lots to do indoors and not on the greenway. I am also not afraid to let people know who I am.
What's the general opinion of Sarah's speech last night???
I think she rocks! Her views are right on target with what we need in America. (I read the speech, did not watch it or listen to it so as to not have a visual impression, just wanted to see the facts and not the show) And for those that jump on the family issues bandwagon...let those without sin cast the first stone.
anon 10:47 - no one is without sin, but obviously it's a concern to the nation when someone that will be intrinsic to policy making and decisions that affect all of our children and teens could not teach her own child the simple facts of life to prevent her from being pregnant at 17.
That is what teaching "abstinence only" gives children - no less desire to experiment sexually, but way less education to use to protect themselves while they ARE experimenting.
Did anyone else hear about her baby-daddy's myspace page? The frequent f-bombs and referencing himself as an "effing redneck that doesn't want children and loves to drink and effing party"? LOVELY. I smell a future politician there.
I don't really care what political party inhabits the white house - I would just like to see someone with half a brain.
TLH said... Life is full of trade offs. You want the big city activities you get the big city traffic, crime and all that comes with living in a city. I would love to know what communities have it all. Anyone?
Bismarck-Mandan. Similar size but has a lot more family activities. The only downsize is that they don't have a major university.
11:11 - Just because someone has a good speech writer (did you think she was speaking from the heart?) doesn't make them a good choice for office. Just something to consider.
I don't think it appropriate to judge the future VP by her children's friends morals. These kids will eventually grow up and become our leadership. It is kinda nice to know they have actually had to face some of the real life issues we face instead of living in a white glove world that seems to be required for today's leaders.
Not speaking from the heart? Well that speech touched mine so if it wasn't "from the heart" that just means that there is more good stuff to come. I can't wait!
Plum, Precisely, vote the issues. Unaffiliated voters will decide this election, like all elections. They're smart voters and will study the issues and make informed decisions. That's what will put the McCain ticket over the top.
BTW, Obama's VP decision was a knee jerk decision, obviously. The decision came on the heals of his MAJOR gaffe over the Russia/Georgia conflict. He plummeted in the poles after that misstep. It exposed his foreign affairs cluelessness. Biden was a reaction to this major F-up. His miscue on this issue will cost him the election, and should.
There is nothing fresh about Obama. Same-'ol-same-ol'. You are just a sucker.
That being said, it's silly to discuss the Pres election on a Grand Forks Life blog. McCain carries ND, case closed.
Re: could not teach her own child the simple facts of life to prevent her from being pregnant at 17.
That is probably the most ignorant comment I have read here. How do you know she taught abstinence? Abstinence means not doing it you moron. So what is wrong with teaching that? Quit being a dumbass.
Obama Leading in North Dakota by 3 points in Aug. 23-27 poll. Hoeven leading by 44 Points date syndicated: Sep 3 2008 12:37PM
A poll conducted from August 23-27 by DFM Research of 400 likely voters shows Obama leading 43% to 40% with 5% Other and 12% Unsure (margin of error +/- 5%). This is the first ND Poll since February showing Obama Leading in North Dakota.
I am sick of women saying that other women should be proud of Palin because she's a woman! I am a woman and would never ever vote for her.
I am scared of how much worse this country will get if McCain/Palin are elected. I tried hard to keep an open mind listening to her speech last night, but I gave up quickly. I don't agree with her opinions, views, ideas...oh, wait, what are they again? I guess maybe the only thing I really got from her speech is that she thinks voting for Obama is a stupid decision, and if you aren't a conservative republican then you will go to hell. Obviously she was not trying to gather support from undecided non-republican voters. She was just pandering to hardcore republicans. I understand why she would do that, but before her speech I never felt more hated by someone I've never met and has never met me than I did last night. The way she was insulting Obama ended up insulting many more American citizens.
Gov Palin hit a home run last night ! A hat trick for the Hockey Mom ! She has and is living all of her points she made in her speech. Obama is a empty suit ! I still like the question of Obama "What have you done and what have you run " ? ZERO, NADA, NOTHING. greenglass4
Re: Remember a comment about three months ago about this blog dying in a month? I don't think GFG needs anyone to apologize to him. I am glad that you are outta here, the sooner the better. I don't care for all the useless comments, yours and mine included, but we have the right to express them, or at least I thought we did. I am sure you wont see this, as per your comment about being outta here, you won't be missed.
I think this blog is great! And since I am comment #90 I guess others must too. Too bad everyone doesn't know how to play nice and some act like children when they get their feelings hurt. We'll miss you sweetie!
As far as women saying that women should be proud of Sarah...that is your personal choice to like her or hate her but I for one think she ROCKS! What exactly is it that Obama has done or said that holds any merit? I am listening. I love to know the whole truth before making an opinion of someone so I do not hate him just because I am not voting for him. I think it is childish to slam a person that you disagree with just because that person doesn't agree with everything you believe in.
I have a Grand Forks question. What does Hugo's triple fresh, ground three times daily mean? Do they grind the same meat three times a day? Is the meat purchased at 4pm fresher than the meat purchased at 10am? Is someone going to be cooking ground beef three times a day? I just don't get it. What happens to the meat that was ground first? I know this is an oddball question but I've always wondered what the slogan means...anyone?
10:11 Bravo! I just read his nomination speech...is it just me or did he totally dis the Native American people? He mentions blacks, whites, Hispanics and Asians but no where in the very racially biased speech did he mention Native Americans...I just thought that a bit odd since he is tauting the unity of AMERICANS
Let's face it, McCain and the Repuglicans are the elitists: Tax breaks for big business (incl. big oil) and the rich. Meanwhile, if you're gay you can't serve in the military or get married. If you're middle class, your real income will continue to decline as it has under Bush. And if you're uninsured, well, don't get sick. 80% of the American people think we're on the right track. So the last thing we need is more of the same. See the light. It's not too late.
Democrats like to feed the nation at the expense of the taxpayer
Republicans teach the hungry to fish, encourage them to feed their families and neighbors, sell the leftovers for extra income and THEN give a small portion (about 10%)back to the government
In response to the hugo's question ... i think they grind it at 3 separate times to meet demands throughout the day ... but don't let that slogan fool you ... that does not mean the meat is fresh, only that whatever meat they chose to grind and however old it is, is now freshly ground up ... i don't care for hugo's at all ... usually at hugo's a "sale" = "expired".
Does anyone know where to take their compact fluorescent light bulbs that have burnt out? They have mercury in them so I can't just thrown them away in the garbage.
Here's what pisses me off about Hugos. Heres an example, if they have a sale on corn chips for example, they will pull all the chilli cheese flavor corn chips till the sale is over. Maybe it is frito lay that does that but still, it ticks me off.
concerning the florescent bulbs...they are considered hazardous waste due to mercury. For hazardous waste and electronics there is a yearly disposal done in early May at the time of the annual city cleanup. Last year you could bring electronics and other hazardous waste to a disposl place in front of Super One foods.
I have had nothing but positive experiences at the Hugos EGF store. The store manager there as always been very good about taking my family's request for special food for our allergic young son. And there is rarely a big wait there as compared to the 32nd store.
I don't get the draw to Sams for produce. It looks wilted and I've put items back after finding mold growing. I didn't renew my membership this year and probably won't again. I am insulted everytime I have to stop to have someone check my cart yards from the checkout lane to see if I have paid for all the items. Membership fees, having to buy in bulk (not always cost effective), hassle leaving the store and lack of bags are not my idea of a good shopping experience. And Walmart simply frustrates me everytime I go there.
I understand the Sams thing, but why does walmart frustrate you? Walmart frustrates me because I have to wait so long in line to get checked out. Other than that, it is better than the kmart/sears store.
Um, how about the amount of creepers and foreigners in Walmart. Somedays, it looks like we are in Iran, Mexico, or the state penn.
Hahahahahahah
Go to any other location in this country away from the Dakotas and come up with an opinion. Our Walmart probably has one of the least diverse shopper pools...
Re: 1:31 pm You have to be the most pathetic person to ever leave a comment here. I think you see a lot of canadian traffic here... The more I think about what you said, the sorrier I feel for you. You've obviously been in the penn to know that. Loser.
What is the story behind the elderly man in a wheelchair that has the big German Sheppard? I've seen him at Walmart lots of times, this would make a great human interest story.
1:31 What exactly is a "creeper" or a "foreigner" in your opinion? Are only certain people allowed out in public here? If so, what are they?
i dont think 1:31 is on the city council. I cant imagine anyone making a statement like that. what 1:31 said has to be the most retarded thing i have ever read here. He is retarded and obviously dangerous.
The "not as elderly as you think" man in the wheelchair is a vietnam vet. He makes his way to walmart from EGF. To think that people complain about how long it takes them to get there by vehicle...
I think 1:31 probably has only a 5th grade education, just by the way he abbreviated penitentiary. I think that the city councilmen all have at least an 8th grade education, so please don't put them in the same category...
Re: too cool to be on mtv. no, you are not hip, your'e not even cool. you are an idiot, bigot, not to mention a dumbass. You wouldn't know hip if it hit you in the ass. Did I mention you were a fool? Your'e a fool.
I don't remember anyone saying anything about hating your own skin color but you shouldn't hate other skin colors... Everyone looks the same under the skin. You should learn English if you want to live in America. I am not saying forget your first language but don't look at me like I am the dumbass when I don't understand Spanish, French, etc. No one should vote for Obama because he is black. Maybe all election stuff should be done over radio so we can't use that with our judgement. We need to choose a president based on views and what that person can do for our country. Who is suffering because of a white man. I am a 24 yr. old, white, and very hip female.
To the two parents (males or females) who were commenting about their children being allergic to mosquitoes and swelling up, get a grip. They are little kids and any new kids to this part of the country go through their first few summers with swelled mosquito bites. This does not make them allergic forever! They are just reacting to the toxins in the bite. Once their body absorbs it and gets used to it, they won't have that problem again. This swelling would happen even in Florida, Oklahoma, Texas etc. It does not make ND a bad place.
I never said ND was a bad place because of mosquitos but I am not going to encourage my child to get bit by one so he can absorb the toxins and be miserable for a week. Yes, a person can stay allergic forever. My 22 year old sister still swells up from bites. This isn't a little red dot it's a swollen knot and a secondary rash also.

Guess I'll be the second in deference to the Obama supporter that posted first.
Just announced.. John McCain's running mates 17 year old daughter is knocked up... Any thoughts...
I think that anyone who votes republican this election is the opposite of intelligent.
I'm not supporting either but her her daughter's life is none of my business. The issues are.
What possible difference does the girl's pregnancy make in the campaign?
Geesh. This blog has really sunk to a new level of crap.
It's windy and hot and humid here, and it sucks. Those with AC don't have a right to complain.
And apparently they can drive on over in their white car.
For all the people that are always asking for a Olive Garden resaurant, guess what? Bismarck is getting one...lmao
I heard they were making a movie about it already:

Anybody know where a guy can get a good taco in town?
Closest place for a good taco would be southern California. Good luck.
To anon @ 9:26 PM :
If a poster like that was directed toward Obama, you'd be yelling "Racist!"
To anon @ 9:26 PM :
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
This town blows and yet its too stupid to even capitalize on that one thing that it has going for it.
How stupid/blind can you be?
Oh also, GF sucks.
Is it true that Target is blocking the developement of their old space? Who runs this town morons?
Just curious...what is the population here on the weekends?
Manitobians rule!!! I tried to do some shopping but the shelves and racks were pretty bare.
I wish I had a million dollars... I would open a mega mall (in EGF)
too stupid to even capitalize on that one thing that it has going for it
wind?
to anon@11:41
You, my friend, would be a complete moron to open a megamall in EGF.
Don't be a dumbass...
You must know what a good taco is, so make it yourself...
What is grand forks suppose to capitalize on?
By the way, that's a pretty big word for a 12 year old...
capitalize on tourism. capitalize on the wind...it is not rocket science Take what you have and utilize it for your benefit.
Interesting.
Someone finally has the real facts and no one has any more to say.
Thanks, GFG, for getting things back on track in your blog.
"The City Beat" has become "The City Advocate".
Sad.
I don't have anything against sports, it's just not my thing, and I'm definitely not the only one who feels that way.
my sentiments exactly Anon 10:01
Are you telling me the City Beat isn't the official mouthpiece for the tax and spenders of city hall?
Anon 12:05, If you are looking for a place to hang around with the family, you should try the greenway.
Yes, while the greenway is a truly awesome place I agree it is beautiful, what about after dark, and during inclimate weather - wind, rain, snow?
I'm sure I can think of more such as educational classes, scouts, childrens museums, etc.
you better move to Minneapolis or some other city that is comparable in size to get all of those things on your wishlist.
Don't let the door.....
anon 12:01 and 12:05
You guys forgot to mention rape, robbery, murder, prostitutes, pimps, drug houses, gangs, car jackings, etc. There may be a time you wished you were back in grand forks...
Re: Anonymous said...
"The City Beat" has become "The City Advocate".
Amen.
Citizens of growing diverse cities get bored too. They also get carjacked, mugged, raped, stabbed, shot, etc. etc. Be careful what you wish for.
uh wasn't there just a case of gang banging/rape in the news this past Sunday?
Re: 12:05
@9:52
My opinion on Palin? It's really pathetic how the republicans are pandering. It's an attempt to get votes..not get a leader.
11:07 is a Dem who has already made up his mind.
Why don't you people understand how transparent you are?
The speech was fantastic. Every woman in America should be VERY proud.
Get used to her folks, come November, she will be our VP.

Bismarck-Mandan. Similar size but has a lot more family activities. The only downsize is that they don't have a major university.
11:11 - Just because someone has a good speech writer (did you think she was speaking from the heart?) doesn't make them a good choice for office. Just something to consider.
The "speech writer" argument? Are you serious?
What a putz!
Candidates have speech writers. Get over it.
It's silly, childish bs like above that will cost BHM the election.
Grow up!
Just saying, don't try to buy my vote with the "every woman and person in america should be proud of that speech" crap.
Vote based on policy and who would be operate the best, not who had the best buzz words.
Plum,
Precisely, vote the issues.
OMG! Get Robert Gibbs out of the media. This guy is complete idiot! He is not helping Obama!
A Dem Rove wannabe (at best).
so no one in ND is suppose to have an opinion? It's still frikin AMERICA buddy and everyone's opinion counts.
It is NEVER "silly" to discuss the future of our country!
You have just opened a can of something...
The city sure is smelling better than previous years.
11:56, look down.
"Grand Forks Life", get it?
What an idiot! Anon -vs- anon.
What is more insignificant?
Nothing.
Anon 11:56 - What? You didn't appreciate the "I think I stepped in something smell?" LOL
Anon - 12:00 Weather and politics...is there anything else in GF of significance to talk about???
This town is in serious need of the "bubble" surrounding it to be popped...join the real world.
Re: could not teach her own child the simple facts of life to prevent her from being pregnant at 17.
That is probably the most ignorant comment I have read here. How do you know she taught abstinence? Abstinence means not doing it you moron. So what is wrong with teaching that? Quit being a dumbass.
It may not hold up, but we can dream, can't we?
Obama Leading in North Dakota by 3 points in Aug. 23-27 poll. Hoeven leading by 44 Points
date syndicated: Sep 3 2008 12:37PM
ZERO, NADA, NOTHING. greenglass4
Remember a comment about three months ago about this blog dying in a month?
It looks like it happened, if the continuing absence of valid posts is any indication.
I'm outta here; and am removing the addy of this blog from my list of favorites.
Apologies to GFG; you gave it a great try, and a lot of patience. Unfortunately, I've run out of that.
"Gov Palin hit a home run last night"
Yeah, She's the last best hope for anti-abortion, anti-environment secessionists everywhere. We're doomed!
you kind of sound like that what's her name on the radio. Oh how I cant wait to see who wins this one...lol
Can't we just get along?
to: 8:49 PM, September 04, 2008
Thank you.
I just read the Obama speech and I don't get it. Can someone please translate it for me?
I have a Grand Forks question. What does Hugo's triple fresh, ground three times daily mean? Do they grind the same meat three times a day? Is the meat purchased at 4pm fresher than the meat purchased at 10am? Is someone going to be cooking ground beef three times a day? I just don't get it. What happens to the meat that was ground first? I know this is an oddball question but I've always wondered what the slogan means...anyone?
I was at Obama's speech. Here's a translation...
Talk about members of his and Michelle's family.
Highlight how they are very successful.
Then, transition to how F'd up this country is that no one can persevere and succeed. (See above point). Silly, huh?
Next, highlight all the things Government is going to do for all of us. Promise the world.
And finally, go through every Dem principle since the beginning of time and push them.
Change? Hope? Who thinks so? I don't.
Face it, 2 things have pushed this guy to the top of the Dem ticket...
Bush Derangement Syndrome and Elite Dems seeing the Clintons as hillbillies that crashed their party.
Oh...he filled some time by slamming McCain to trigger big response from the crowd. I was there, the slams BY FAR got the most crowd reaction.
Partisan politics of old.
Open you minds people and "get it". It's crystal clear.
Sorry, meant to say 80% of the American people think we're on the WRONG track...
Don't forget the french fry feed at University Park on Thursday at 5pm. That's some place to take your kids, etc. Check it out!
Democrats like to feed the nation at the expense of the taxpayer
Republicans teach the hungry to fish, encourage them to feed their families and neighbors, sell the leftovers for extra income and THEN give a small portion (about 10%)back to the government
Our nation needs to learn to fish
In response to the hugo's question ... i think they grind it at 3 separate times to meet demands throughout the day ... but don't let that slogan fool you ... that does not mean the meat is fresh, only that whatever meat they chose to grind and however old it is, is now freshly ground up ... i don't care for hugo's at all ... usually at hugo's a "sale" = "expired".
Does anyone know where to take their compact fluorescent light bulbs that have burnt out? They have mercury in them so I can't just thrown them away in the garbage.
Are there any options in town other than Hugos?
Super One.... They have awesome sales!
I would call the public info. office and ask them what to do with your bulbs. 701.746.INFO I bet they tell you to throw them in the garbage.
Here's what pisses me off about Hugos. Heres an example, if they have a sale on corn chips for example, they will pull all the chilli cheese flavor corn chips till the sale is over. Maybe it is frito lay that does that but still, it ticks me off.
We do the majority of our grocery shopping at Super One
Target is the best for groceries ... Sam's club is the best for fresh produce and meats.
concerning the florescent bulbs...they are considered hazardous waste due to mercury. For hazardous waste and electronics there is a yearly disposal done in early May at the time of the annual city cleanup. Last year you could bring electronics and other hazardous waste to a disposl place in front of Super One foods.
I saw a lady that works at hugos buying groceries at wal-mart. I chuckled...
I have had nothing but positive experiences at the Hugos EGF store. The store manager there as always been very good about taking my family's request for special food for our allergic young son. And there is rarely a big wait there as compared to the 32nd store.
i seen walmart employee at hugos

Re: 1:31 pm
You have to be the most pathetic person to ever leave a comment here. I think you see a lot of canadian traffic here...
The more I think about what you said, the sorrier I feel for you. You've obviously been in the penn to know that. Loser.
i think 1:31 pm is on the gf city council. he knows who he is
What is the story behind the elderly man in a wheelchair that has the big German Sheppard?
In response to 1:31, you are the only creeper that I have ever seen at walmart
That's right, anon @ 1:31 must be ignorant and out of touch for not embracing diversity.
Diversity is SOOOOO hip. Only the coolest of kids can hate their own upbringing and their own skin tone.
America sucks. Obama is our savior. Yea for Hannah Montana.
Am I hip now too? Or does having an opinion apart from yours make me too evil and stupid to sit at the cool kids table?
Diversity is SOOOOO hip. Only the coolest of kids can hate their own upbringing and their own skin tone.
Do you realize America was founded on diversity (i.e. melting pot)? It goes way past skin tone. Has nothing to do with being liberal, Obama, etc.
Re: too cool to be on mtv.
no, you are not hip, your'e not even cool. you are an idiot, bigot, not to mention a dumbass. You wouldn't know hip if it hit you in the ass. Did I mention you were a fool? Your'e a fool.
to anon at 1:31
You should be the poster child for retroactive abortion.
"Do you realize America was founded on diversity (i.e. melting pot)? It goes way past skin tone. Has nothing to do with being liberal, Obama, etc."
Key words are "melting pot" which seems to escape the 'new immigrants.' Say no! to any flag except the US flag if you want to live here.
(and I don't care who is in WalMart)
Oh yeah, learn English too!
I am a 24 yr. old, white, and very hip female.
and very hip female. That's TBD. ;)
In all seriousness, I agree with the above posts. You live in this country, you should be able to speak the principle language.
"You live in this country, you should be able to speak the principle language."
Does this logic also apply to knowing the difference between "principle" and "principal"?
5 and b~
please move to canada... we don't want you here.
You sure told me.
I think sending that a**hole to canada would be considered an attack on their country. They don't deserve that...
"Does this logic also apply to knowing the difference between "principle" and "principal"
Dang... I better deport myself now!
uowxguesser, I think you made an honest mistake, so stay here and we will send anon 1:31 instead...
