Mooddyz Bar and Casino

A new business by the name of Mooddyz Bar and Casino may soon open in the former Westward Ho building. Currently, the only business in the former entertainment complex is the Northside Cafe.

The bar's request for a liquor license has been at least temporarily denied due to the way in which one of the potential owners answered the question "Have you ever been convicted of any crime, in this or in any other state, or under Federal Law?" in the liquor license paperwork.

In the paperwork, the man reported a 1979 arrest for marijuana possession, but according to the Grand Forks Police Department's Criminal Investigation Bureau, he failed to report several other crimes. These include a 1998 arrest and conviction for DUI, a 2005 arrest and conviction for reckless driving, and a 2005 arrest and conviction for harassment.

Mooddyz is appealing the liquor license application denial at this evening's Service and Safety Standby Committee. Check out the meeting packet which contains all of this and more information.

I hope Moodyz goes away.

The liquor license app is an example of what is left unsaid speaking louder than what is said.

Yes. I would be willing to bet Moodyyyzzzz (my God, what a stupid name) would be a black mark on whatever part of town it existed in. Good riddance.

Where are these guys from that they think a DUI, reckless driving, and harassment represent "a couple of minor offenses?"

Interesting that a permit to run a business depends on a criminal record

It's not just a business, it's a liquor business.

Big difference.

Someone with convictions like these this recently tries to start a liquor business. Outrageous.

and then lies about it in the application...sounds like this one is a non-starter.

This one belongs in Hazzard county with Boss Hogg. Wyckyd name.

The packet is an interesting read. I can't see how it was a simple misunderstanding based on the language in the question in question: "Have you *ever* been convicted of a crime, in this or any other state, or under Federal Law?"

Also, on page 10 - is there a church, school, hospital, or library within 300 feet of the place? I wasn't aware.

And as a personal aside: I hope they're not planning on having a band on that stage. 45 square feet on a triangle, no less, is enough for a solo act or a comedian and that's about it. It almost always follows that a venue like this ends up wanting live bands and they're grossly unequipped for it, which ends up causing extensive and expensive remodels. Is there no outside consulting going on or what?

I wouldn't go to Mooddyz based on the name alone.

Something about bad spelling is really unattractive to me.

Not only is the spelling atrocious, but I just love the way their business stationery reads: Mooddyz Bar & Casino - At "The Ho"

...this will be a classy joint, eh?

Service and Safety Standby Committee meetings aren't televised, right? Are the meeting videos archived and available on the city website? I don't think so, are they?

That would be pretty cool.

Maybe the should open an Olive Garden there.

hey - instead of looking for video for 30 minutes, how about you get off your duff and go to the meeting if it is that important to you!

Agreed. Why complain when you can actively stop what you want to stop?

But I do agree...the name is awful, and the fact that the guy(s) involved have a shady background is probably going to kill this business before it ever gets off the ground. Which is probably good, because GF doesn't need another Broken Drum - and I say this with limited reservations because even the Broken Drum has "classed up" their act judging from what they've done to their building and the surrounding area.

I might even visit the Broken Drum after a race (if I was into racing).

Who knows - maybe these guys just want to have something to gain stability in their lives? It's hard to say except for the fact that they (or one of them) has really recent legal troubles...

I'd say "no", but purely based on that fact (if it were up to me, solely)...

Maybe the chamber of Commerce might say something different, or the City...

Who's "complaining"? Just inquiring if the meetings were available on-line.

Maybe I enjoy my reality television to be actual "reality".

Criminal records? Look up some of the current bar owners in town on ndcourts.gov and minnesota's court website. You might be surprised at what you'll find.

Um, like who?
