This question got lost in the riff raff discussion, and I'd appreciate some feedback.
I need to switch from T-mobile to another network. Can anyone tell me what is the best provider to go with for bare-bones cell service in the area?

Matthew Hartman said...

I'm sure there are supporters of other services, but really, I've never had a problem with Verizon around these parts. And given I travel around a good portion of the area through the spring and summer (storm chasing), I've only had one hiccup in coverage... That was out west of Devils Lake, between Knox and Rugby. For the most part, however, I've been very happy even when using data services through them. My two cents, anyway...

What is the latest date/month it has ever snowed in Grand Forks?

Anonymous said...

December 31 ... mulitple years. LOL.

From the past thread, didn't anyone listen to their parents when growing up? When something annoys you, bothers you, makes you mad, just ignore it. The secret word there is ignore. If its something that causes physical harm to you, then do something about it on your own, and don't be a cry baby about it.

In 1992, Saturday, May 23, it was 30F with a 20+mph wind and snowing heavily at noon. Corey Ihmels from Williston, ND ran a 9:03.65 in the 3200 meters at the State Track Meet, a new state record by almost nine seconds.

That event always helps me to remember the latest date--in the first half of the year--that I remember snow on the ground.

My mom has told me when she was a kid, she remembers snow on the ground in the first week of June. This may have been during the spring of 1966 following the massive snowfall that year. Looks like it would take a while for that to melt.

Anonymous said...

In 1997, it snowed in June. I believe it was June 13th when I woke up to snow on the ground.

Different topic: What do we need to do to get the city to do something about the lane markings on our streets? Accidents are waiting to happen and are happening.

Anonymous said...

What lane markings? I can never see them cuz theyre covered in snow for 8 months out of the year.

The best thing that Grand Forks could do is to build an undergroung subway system, like they have in New York and San Francisco.

Snow sucks and so do hippies.

If the last several days of posts are to serve as examples, this blog is doomed.

I give it another month.

Sad, too. It used to actually be reputable.

Wow, what a great way to start a new thread already!! Such deep thinking open-minded anonymous people we have! My favorite thing is people are so nice and genuine. My second is they don't try to hard to make intelligent conversation, it just comes out so easily.
I think spring fever is making everyone a little hot, time to take a few Dayquil, wash it down with a beer and have a timeout with a blanky and pillow and wake up when it's 80 degrees out.
I think fixing the roads would be a better use of the money it would take to paint a few lines on it that no one even sees 80% of the year. Verizon is amazing. And Anon 12:29 PM, please don't date. God forbid you should reproduce.
Any other hypocrites like me on the board today ready for some good worldy conversation?? sheesh

Did anyone catch Tom Brosseau at the Empire last night?

Anonymous said...

Melt Already,
Are you from Williston? I ran cross country and track with Corey Ihmels. he's now the head track coach at Iowa State

Anonymous said...

I wanted to run track in high school, but I took break dancing lessons instead

Anonymous said...

Anon 4:51, no, I'm from Carrington, ND. I graduated in '91, and was running in high school around the same time as Corey. I saw that he got the head coaching position. That's very cool. I think he will do well there.

That 9:03 in those conditions is still one of the sickest things I have ever witnessed!

Are you still running?

Anonymous said...

I went to the Brosseau show. The guy is fantastic. Great crowd. Brenda Weiler had a great set also.

Anonymous said...

I saw Brenda Weiner one time. I thought it was a great set too. Brenda Weiner is a very talented individual. Are there any other artists in the Weiner family?

ON another note:
anyone heard Kate Nash? She is a very talented singer.

Anonymous said...

It's Brenda Wieler.
www.brendaweiler.com
www.myspace.com/bweiler
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brenda_Weiler
etc, etc, etc..thanks to Google but let us NOT talk about that, please.

Anon above, why would you say something like that? Maybe Miss WEILER decided to move to Portland to find more open-minded people.

Nick you probably right, this blog will be defunk in a month, maybe less. Maybe the moderator should take a stab at shaping up the blog and write the next article about the hate that is in North Dakota. It's like the big elephant in the room..and it keeps sh*ting all over the place and making a big mess for the rest of us. One that no one wants to clean up. I believe people can change, and want to and need to, it's a necessity of life. To think that we are unable to is to give up. Have we all just given up? This town will never grow unless people are willing to learn and grow and change. Of course we all could continue to look a blind eye from things like hate crimes and contributing to minors. We don't need to keep the 'riff-raff' out, take it how you want it, person or action, I believe we are our own 'riff-raff'

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:42,
I like this blog, I think its great that we can come on here and talk about what every we want!

GrandForksGuy said...

I have Verizon and I've been pretty satisfied with their service.

I've never had a chance to see Brosseau in person, but I did see him on WDAZ the last time he was in town and I was very impressed. We're lucky to have such a talented young man who was born and raised in Grand Forks. Unlike some people, Brosseau is clearly proud to have been raised in Grand Forks and North Dakota.

Ahh good, Your Carrington team would have been great back in 91' if Mike and Dave Sobolik hadn't moved to Colorado. They both ended up running Division I. I agree, the 9:03 that day was insane.

Anonymous said...

UND football standout Donovan Alexander gets a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Hopefully he can be more than just a practice squad player. To my knowledge, Weston Dressler is currently not signed.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the Sobolik's were super talented (hard workers, too). With 20 extra points from the 1600 and 3200, and help on the relays, we would have been a contender. Mike was fifth and second in the mile in HS in Colorado, and ran 4:12 in college (UC-Boulder and UVA). Dave was 2nd in NCAA DI indoors, and ran 4:04 for the mile.

We used to tease Dave pretty mercilessly. Good times...

Serious question.
Has there ever been a prostitution arrest in Grand Forks?

Anonymous said...

Yes! All I remember is that it was on campus.

Anonymous said...

Man, I wich I could go back to 85'. I could have made it to Nationals you know, I could throw a football over a mountain back in my day!

I still wear my lettermans jacket sometimes. If coach had just let me play that last quarter, I could have taken us to nationals. I wish I could go back to 85'. You know I used to date Cindy Johnson! Yeah man, Cindy Johnson! Now I hear shes married to some geek Doctor. Back in 85' she was the Captain of the Cheer squad.

GF Yourself said...

There are regular prostitution arrests in Grand Forks.

Wait, scratch that. I can't verify that with the internet. Probably not true.

This blog is dying. What happened to the good scoops and rumors? Open threads have run their course. Time to put that tool back in the shed for a while.

Anonymous said...

New blog!! GF YOURSELF!!!
Laugh out Loud!!
I like it..you should be daring and write posts about the real things in GF and ND. Don't be a wimp about it....ruffle a little feathers..please!
The last prostitution article i saw via internets is from '88 and that was EGF. Published on May 7, 1988, Page 2D, Grand Forks Herald

But I would have to pay for the archive on the Grand Forks Herald to read the whole thing.

Anonymous said...

GFYourself is quite right; this blog is on it's final threads (no pun intended).

It's become a running commentary of mindless, childish posts.

Sad. I realize that nothing lasts forever, though, and know it's time to move on to another site.

Thanks, GFG; you did your part, anyway!

Anonymous said...

Let's TRY conversation, at least a good try....
Rebate stimulus (debt we can pass down to our great-great-great-grandchildren) check,
http://money.cnn.com/2008/04/28/news/economy/rebate_update_monday/index.htm

Anyone else wanna just send theirs back?? How long will it take to repay this back? Where ARE we getting this money from anyway?

And..discuss

GF Yourself said...

While I can't afford to send it back, I do wish it was never offered, since the money is coming from a loan that I, or my kids, will eventually pay back with interest.

So, instead, I will play pretend with the money. I'm going to pretend that gas is $1.29 again. If I take $600 and divide that by 270 gallons, about the amount I estimate I use in a year of driving.

Or maybe I could have more fun by pretending to buy $2.29 gas, and pretending that I spend $75 a week on groceries instead of $80. I could do this for a whole year. Imagine the fun. Wall to wall smiles.

Anonymous said...

we need an overpass over demers and 42nd.

"GFYourself is quite right; this blog is on it's final threads (no pun intended)."

I guess that's why it's getting more posts than ever!

GF Yourself said...

You're a real optimist, anon 11:48. If a dozen people each take a dump in a pot of Chicken Tortilla soup, you'd be happy that the pot was twice as full.

I'd throw the soup out. Pot, too, for that matter. Ick. Then in the future, I'd keep an eye on the soup, maybe even lock the kitchen door.

It might not be a bad idea to stay away from Chicken Tortilla soup for a while, as it's developed a bit of a bad reputation after all the $hit that went into it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Some vegan vegetable would be good. Maybe attract some hippies. Try jambalaya or knaidel on the menu once in a while to broaden everyone's horizons. And don't be afraid to sneak some Flavorite Cream of Chicken in every so often just to mess with people.

Okay, that's as far as I can go with the soup metaphor. Somebody take over CPR for me...

Anonymous said...

I just wanted to say Thank You for all those that gave the feedback for hair cuts and I will let you know how it goes...I may just try them all (before I take DD in)since I am looking for a good experience and a friendly technician along with the cut...someone that I can rely on for cut #2,3,4 etc...

I like this blog, its nice to get honest feedback from real people that live here...I just ignore the other stuff...sounds like someone needs a friend. Everyone has days when they only see the negatives and concentrate on the not so good things but there are good things to share too so I think this blog will be just fine :) I know I for one will be back. Its nice to hear the scoop and see opinions about things. Smile everyone and have a good day!

PS is the circus here always so...hate to say anything negative but...hmmm...only thing that comes to mind is that something seemed to be missing...no elephants, tigers or men being blown from a cannon? And the acrobats kept falling...good show overall though and the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves which is what it is all about anyway. and before someone says anything about the english behind my sentences...no I didn't expect elephants or tigers to be blown out of a cannon...this is a blog, not an English exam

this blog is dying a slow and painful death.

Finally Riff Raff is not racial... :)

Cell phone coverage sucks out west...

Anonymous said...

a blog is only dead if the blog moderator kills it...by deleting it....which I hope doesn't happen. This blog gets a lot of traffic...it is far from becoming stagnant.

anon person why don't you leave your name or even a nickname? Become a real person instead of just a very annoying pessimist... It is quite possible to have a discussion without being rude to others.

Anonymous said...

What is "out west"?? It's great around Minot, Williston and Watford City due to all of the oil activity. Or did you mean Larimore when you mentioned out west?

Anonymous said...

gfyourself,

And if you left, there'd be only eleven people to each take a dump...

Anonymous said...

Hey anon 4:02. GFYourself.

There, now we're both part of the problem.

Anonymous said...

As far as the circus missing the animals this year. I heard that an elephant died on friday therefor the rest of the animals were quarantined. We didnt even bother going this year since that's my son's favorite part.

Anonymous said...

I saw the circust last year and felt bad for all the animals, it's the saddest part. They should work more on the acts and get rid of the animals completely. I am not a PETA supporter, hell I love a good steak and some bacon. Living in a cage on the road is no place for an animal that could take out any number of people it wanted. Elephants can go wild and trample people with out a second or even years notice. Dogs...keep the dogs. Put the wild animals back where they belong. They probably would make more money if they really worked harder on the acts, and it would smell better. I am not trying to be negative it's just when I went with my child last year I was kinda grossed out and not very impressed..we left early. I won't be going back either.

Anonymous said...

The cell phone coverage out west like past the Missouri River sucks.

Anonymous said...

I didn't hear anything about the elephant dying! I just heard that since the animals are usually housed outdoors in during the nights, it was too cold for them to even bring them to Grand Forks.

Anonymous said...

Hmm Im not sure about that it being because animals are typically kept outdoors. I remember years when it's been as cold as it was this year. Guess we will never know!

Anonymous said...

I too heard that an elephant died and that nearly all the show animals were quarantined as a result. A child who went to the show Sunday said the circus featured dogs, but no "wild" animals such as tigers and elephants.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand how it can snow so late in the year with global warming.

Anonymous said...

Has anybody noticed that GFYourself has become the new Greenglass of this blog?

Anonymous said...

I would like to know why the housing prices are so high in this town, there arent any real attractions here, unless you like to see canadians driving the wrong way down every road but honestly even the GFHA cant make a house affordable, I am currently in the market but if you want a nice turn key house you are looking in the 150k area. We need higher paying jobs or cheaper housing to bring more people here. What are your thoughts?
