I think it's time those die hard Olive Garden fans start bugging the company. According to the Bismarck Blog http://www.kxnet.com/viewBlog.asp?BlogId=3 Olive Garden is talking to Bismarck
We love everything about the new movie theater in EGF, and really dislike Carmike. On Saturday morning we saw online and in the paper that "There will be Blood" was playing at Carmike. We got all excited about it, and decided to give Carmike another try.
So, on a very chilly Saturday night we drove out to Carmike. The parking lot was a disaster, with rows of cars parked willy-nilly all over the lot. When we finally got inside, the young man working the till said that the theater was NOT showing "There will be Blood." Did you read that online? he asked. Yes, we said, and in the paper. Oh, he said, we always have problems with the paper.
We were annoyed. How did two sources have this wrong? I would say most people either check movie times online or in the paper, so to have both wrong is not a good thing at all.
The movie times that run in the paper are an advertisement placed by Carmike. If the ad was wrong, it was their fault for not providing the correct information to the paper to print. Also, until River Cinema came along, Carmike ran the smallest ad possible. So small that a lot of folks had a hard time reading it. When River Cinema ran a bigger ad right next to Carmike's, Carmike was forced to finally pay for a bigger ad.
This was our last straw for Carmike. I'm annoyed about the whole experience, and just thought I'd share it with you.
Really the only thing that Carmike has on River Cinema is the digital film, but that's still not enough to bring me back to that hellhole, i don't care if they did lower their prices, River Cinema is still so much better in many aspects, particularly comfort.
Last year sometime Carmike had advertised online for a Midnight showing on a Saturday night, so the boyfriend and I showed up (along with at least a dozen other people), only to find it really wasn't showing a midnight movie that night....frustrating...
The digital projectors they have are cheap-o's from other theaters that got remodeled...the color is fairly crappy, and you actually get a better color with the old film projectors.
Agree with the carmike thing, we have been stuck in that situation before!
SCREW the olive garden! Havent you people yet been to Johnny Carinos in fargo? BEST italian resturdant EVER. I'll never step foot in an olive garden again in my life. WE WANT CARINOS IN GRAND FORKS!
Every blog turns into a discussion about Olive Garden. Come on people, there are other topics out there. Why are there so many banks in GF. Every corner, there is a bank.
Caul fat--I am assuming you tried L and M Meats? I am pretty sure it would have to be special ordered--never seen it in the case over there. Other than that I know it can be ordered online (how that works not sure). I have never used caul fat--wish I could be more help.
Time and spatial averages are the key... you can have a colder winter in certain locals but still end up with a net warming trend over a long period of time. Another thing is the "global" aspect. Global warming/ cooling can mean regional climate change which can include warmer or colder temperatures.
tlh... Yep. I tried there. They were very helpful, but couldn't provide it. Shame, as there is nothing more starkly beautiful than the gleaming white veins of fat running through a thin membranous Caul. It blankets any meatloaf or roast or loin or anything in a tight, clinging aura of fatty goodness.
There is no substitute.
PS... many online sources serve up ill-washed and rancid Caul, frozen to boot!! I wouldn;t wanna try that route again unless you got a solid, tried and true recommendation.
If they quit calling it "global warming" and used the term "climate change" it would make more sense. It's not a myth...North Dakota should be one of the most concerned, climate shifts could ruin the ag industry.
SO I keep hearing KCLD advertise that they bought 400 seats for a special movie night at River Cinema on Valentines Day. Does anyone know if this means the theater will be closed to the rest of the public? That would kind of put a damper in my V-Day plans...
The same thing happened to my wife and I on sunday. I saw online and in the paper as well that "There Will Be Blood" was playing. We went out in the frigid weather to go see the movie. When I told the ticket person what movie we wanted to see, she said that it wasn't playing there. I told her that the ad in the paper and online showed it was. She said they were wrong. If it was wrong on friday in the paper, why not call the Herald and tell them to change it for saturday and sunday. How about putting a sign on the door as well. What a joke. That was the last straw for me.
wannagrapple-- I am sorry I have no tried and true online source, but alot of the foodie blogs I read do mention some sources. The only other option you might have is the hutterite colony in Forest River. I believe they do whole hog butchering there and that would be a close source. They do sell their produce and meat in various places-- I am now really curious to try it also..LOL.
Wow, Carmike drops their prices and is scouting the River Cinema's concessions, but they still can't figure out it comes down to customer service. Amazing how simple the formula is.
I didn't go to "There Will Be Blood" at Carmike 10, which I believe is now playing, but I did go to "Into The Wild" at Carmike's Columbia 4 last week. Has anyone noticed that neither of these R-rated films are showing at River Cinema? Does anyone remember the owner's statement that he personally screens all movies to decide if they're appropriate? Be careful what you wish for people. I have been to the River Cinema and think it is highly over-rated, and the owner arrogant. Who is he to decide what is appropriate for me to watch? I will stick with Carmike!
My girlfriend and I also went to Into The Wild at Carmike last weekend. We both thought it was one of the best movies we had seen in a long time! The place was packed. This past weekend we went to Atonement, an excellent movie that received multiple Oscar nominations. The fact that neither of these movies are showing at the other theater is fine with us. We went there once and were not impressed. It looked and felt like a small town theater, which I guess it is. I also don't approve of censorship and will not go to the River Cinema again.
Sorry, guys, but I really don't think censorship is occurring. First, Rambo is showing right now. It can't get much worse than that. Second, the first time There Will Be Blood was in theaters it was shown at River Cinema over Christmas, I believe. Besides, they own the theater and can do what they want. If they want it to be family oriented theater - fine. I agree, the River Cinema is overrated but its only due to the fact that we have nothing better to compare it to. If you had to choose between RC and a huge multiplex in the cities, multiplex it is, even if it is four dollars more. Also, the lines are ridiculous. There is no order to the lines and people become confused and wait all the way out the door. There are ten tills open. It be nice if they an employee to direct people to the tills shorten them up.
Censorship??? How is a privately owned theater not playing certain films censorship? I'd call that a business decision. If they want to target a specific audience, more power to them.
On a side note, River Cinema is a small town theater that is very underwhelming compared to many of the more modern cinema megaplexes everywhere else in the country. That said, I prefer it to Carmike, so they'll keep getting my business.
I don't think I would come on here and say that River Cinema is better or that I prefer it to a larger multiplex such as the AMC Theaters or any other (even a decent Carmike owned theater). The fact is, however, that Carmike has been sucking the local market for a long, long time with no competition. They set their prices to ridiculous levels and didn't update their theaters. (let them fall into disrepair, really) It is because of this that people are excited about a new local theater that provides some very good basics for movie-goers. (upgraded concessions from those of Carmike, stadium seating, more affordable prices, decent customer service) It sounds as though some on here are saying that locals are naive and believe this is an end-all theater. This local knows, however, that the lobby is undersized, the lines confusing, and the physical structure leaves something to be desired. It is hands-down, however, better than the Carmike experience in GF.
Ben, don't get me wrong...I completely agree it is better than Carmike and am not implying that the locals are naive in any way. I was and am just as excited as everyone else that a new theater has finally given Carmike a run for its money Just was commenting on the 'over-rated' comment above.
They just closed all the Carinos' down here in the Bay Area, and are planning on closing even more, so I wouldn't hold my breath over getting one in GF anytime soon.
Besides, Maggiano's, Spaghetti Werehouse and Buca di Beppo beat the ever-loving Hell out of Carino's and Olive Garden on their BEST days.
Giuseppe's opened last night. Did anyone go? I'd love to hear some reviews before Valentines Day, as my boyfriend is flying 1000 miles to be here and I want to take him some place more original that maybe won't have an hour wait when we get there.
Kudos to 'DAZ for having the balls to use the word "illegal" when referring to illegal aliens in the Texas Roadhouse story. Much of American media doesn't have the balls to use the correct term, illegal.
This is what locals get excited about? Not the possibility of Thai food, or Vietnamese or Indian or even regional Italian, but a chain? Disturbing. It reminds me of a neighbor who went down to the Twin Cities for the weekend recently. "Did you get to the Lotus?" I asked. "Oh no, we love the Applebee's in Burnsville."
There Will Be Blood is not showing at the Carmike now. That was the point of the above posters' rants.
There Will Be Blood has not played at the River Cinema either. I called them up and asked them this question and they said they haven't shown it and don't plan on getting the movie to show in the future.
10:05.....whaaaattt? The media's failure to use the term "illegal" when referring to the tragedy that is Illegal Immigration is central to the debate. Liberal media elects to use the term "undocumented" instead. As in "undocumented worker". Fortunately for the GF/EGF region, illegal immigration has not become a big issue. If the Federal Government doesn't address the illegal immigration problem, the towns will soon be effected.
The plus is, maybe someday we can all get a smothered burrito in town. (And I'm not talking smothered with 'gravy'.)
She's one of the biggest reasons why I love Grand Forks. I wonder what would happen if we got an authentic _______ (insert cultural title here) restaurant. I'd love to see her opinion on pho or sushi!
I was always under the impression that the media had to say "undocumented" because it saved them from slander/libel if it turned out that these workers simply didn't have their proper legal documents, but were legal citizens. Anyone whose employer hasn't kept proper records, including copies of drivers licenses and social security cards, would be considered "undocumented."
However, I know 99% of the time, an undocumented worker is an illegal alien.
Best res I have eaten at was in Athens, nice little Greek res run by locals for locals, check out the kitchen, sample food, watch it being cooked !As a tourist we found it quite easilt, no sign or name outside. Just word of mouth by people on Eur rail. Greek wine and Ozso were good. Oh Marlyn on her review of KFC, give her a break, plaN ON TRYING "GUMBO" BOWL TONIGHT. Love to see Marlyn eat and reivew Sushi Res that has a naked gal on table with the food on her body. Would that be a scream ? greenglass4.
Once palm trees start growing in Grand Forks, I'll start worrying about global warming. Until then, I'm all for it. I'm tired of this -20, -30 bulls**t! ;)
Thats is too hilarious! A review of a Kentucky Fried Chicken establishment defies all %$^&ing logic! Seriously!
The place has 34 ermployees, I parked between two red pickups, my meal cost less than 5 bucks... lame lame lame. With an extra side of lame sauce.
First off, I will NEVER trust a review from some someone who drinks WATER(!?!??!!?) with their meal. How horribly gauche. Late breaking reseach news has shown that oil and water don't mix. So, how does one ease digestion or enhance pleasure with water? It's the last resort of a CHEAPSKATE!
Lastly.... What the heck is up with the xtra crispy vs original statistics?! Or letting us know that lots of folks get their Grease Buckets "To-Go". Does that help enrich my experience at the restaurant? Most certainly not.
What a waste of a tree. That tripe should have never been envisioned as a column, let alone written.
Wannagrapple, easy does it on Marlyn she is a humorist not a food editor, she rides in a semi-truck for a story and on a Harley, not bad for a 75 year old lady. Just had a KFC bowl for supper, yummy ! greenglass4.
I heard Frontier Airlines is adding flights to Fargo. (Formal announcement tomorrow) I've felt Fargo had adequate air service, so I'm not sure why they went after Frontier. Hopefully Frontier will still consider Grand Forks.

vcsuVikes, GFK is a horrible airport that is badly missmanaged. There will be no other flights to GFK except by NorthWest.
There is a slight chance we might get the alegiant airlines but don't count on anything else. Fargo is a much bigger airline and your better off driving the 75 miles to fly.
There isn't even enough room at the airport for another airline.
The sad thing is she isn't; she's absolutely serious. Her columns pretty much show the complete lack of respect Jacobs et al have for their readers' intelligence.
wannagrapple, What is the proper beverage pairing with a KF bowl? Pretentious much? CG, fire up your torch and get ready to pass it on. You know which one.
Whoa! I come on here to check the happenings, and I see that somebody has a crush on my. I'm flattered! You like me. You really like me!
Please remind me again why I'm pretentious. Is it because my previous post on this thread expressed my love of a chain restaurant? Or is it because I've also expressed my desire for an Olive Garden to come to GF, rather than another upscale restaurant downtown that I can't take my kid to. Maybe it's the fact that I often drink water with my meals.
I have to admit that I'm pretty confused here. And I apologize if anything I've said in the past hurts your tummy.
The pretentious post was for wannagrapple. You just need to fire up th db torch and pass it on, perhaps. Not yet, the jury is still out. We'll let you know.
I'm driving to Minneapolis today so I can take my $130 direct flight to Chicago vs. driving to Fargo and spending $700 for... a direct flight to Chicago.
We routinely drive down to the cities to fly. When considering multiple people, it is almost always several hundred dollars cheaper to fly out of MSP even with gas and parking $$$.
I always fly into MSP. I will never pay the ridiculous fares to fly into GFK directly.
It is cheaper to fly into Minneapolis and rent a car there and drive to GF. My flights from Tampa International to MSP cost about $110 on Airtran, bringing my grand total for a roundtrip flight to $220. If I wanted to fly directly into GFK, it would cost an additional $774.00 roundtrip.
"wannagrapple, What is the proper beverage pairing with a KFC bowl?"
anything but water. read my post again. I wasn't suggesting that you sneak in a bottle of Opus One.
it's just that water and oil don't mix. water is for cheapskates. If I HAD to suggest something, I would maybe recommend a fine 2008 coca-cola, perhaps the diet varietal... shaken, not stirred, with a twist of lime (all totally doable at your local KFC). Give it a try!
If I happen to see you though, rest assured I will be laughing my @ss off.
Are people just pretending to be greenglass at this point? Hell, I'm going to do it at the end of this post.
Re: Airline prices. I haven't had luck with GF versus Fargo prices (and when tickets are only 100-200 more to fly from here than MSP, I'd rather save myself any hassle and fly here (I don't care how stupid that may seem here). I almost drove to MSP to fly to Chicago too actually in a few months, but end up getting a flight out of here for $300 vs. $150+parking+gas) I'm fine with that.
And if Marilyn really is more of a humorist than a food critic, than I guess she has succeeded, since I usually laugh and roll my eyes a lot when I read what she writes.
(Oh, and great link to the Patton Oswalt clip. :) ) greenglass4
The best option for both Grand Forks and Fargo would be for both of them to close their airport or just use it for private planes. Then open up one new large airport halfway in between the two cities and share it. This would give the entire area the best of both worlds. Multiple airlines and large pool of people to entice them to show up. The distance is about the same as most major cities. It will never happen as both cities would never give up for the better of both cities.
anonymous@8:29: That was a proposed project a few years back that never got off the ground (har har!). IIRC it was to be sited in Hillsboro. Depending on who you talk to it was either the people in Grand Forks being their normal, bitter-towards-Fargo-being-bigger selves (likely) or Fargo realizing that they could do better on their own (less likely) that killed that project.
It would also appear MBK's serial spamming of our local blogs and the DS website got him a feature with our favorite restaurant reviewer! (just kidding Matt!)
I'm all for an improved Mayville airport. If both GF and Fargo think they're gonna grow tremendously (as their officials do) it makes sense to build an airport a few years before Mayville becomes the choice suburb of Fargo...
"If I HAD to suggest something, I would maybe recommend a fine 2008 coca-cola, perhaps the diet varietal... shaken, not stirred, with a twist of lime (all totally doable at your local KFC). Give it a try!"
First Northwest does not own the gates but they do own the jetways (quite common at US airports for some reason), so if any airline adds GFK, you can bet that NW will not let the airline use the jetway.
Second the airport needs a new terminal because the one they have now is basically falling apart plus it has lots of flooding problems for one reason or another.

I'm speechless. Really. I'm not sure what to make of that article. I would also like to mention that I'm not married.
(and oh gosh darn it, you've discovered my secret identity!)
"The airport needs a new terminal because the one they have now is basically falling apart plus it has lots of flooding problems for one reason or another."
You're exactly right. There's also an asbestos issue that makes part of the administrative offices unusable. What carrier would want to initiate service from such outdated facilities. I'm confident that once a new terminal is built, carriers will take a second look.
And there's more at stake than cheaper fares and better scheduling. The Alerus has been hampered in attracting bigger conventions/meetings for the same reason. And while the Ralph still seems to do ok in attracting big events, I wonder how long that will continue considering the complaints about air service during the World Juniors.
I remember when playing Sim City, a frequent downfall for my city budget was wasting all my money on an expensive airport that was underutilized. It sure looked cool, however!
The new terminal is not an Alerus-type wishlist project. This is basic infrastructure. Because of the structural/foundational problems, repairing/renovating the existing facility would cost more than building new. Repeat: This is not an ego project.
I don't agree with the Alerus Center failing because of a lack of air service. When I fly into Denver, there's lines of shuttles ready to take me to almost any town on the East side of the Rockies. Golden, Red Rocks, Boulder and Broomfield are all at least as far from the airport as Grand Forks is from Fargo. I think that may be a better fit in the long run. Why can't Grand Forks run a shuttle service from Fargo's airport to the five-star hotels in Grand Forks, and maybe have a rental car place located in one of them? Set up a park and ride system at one of the hotels? In my opinion, the only way to attract more airlines and more routes is to have more boardings, and I don't see how Grand Forks can make that happen.
Because we live in a small town. You should have read some of the comments on the police lawsuit story before they disabled commenting on that story. The editors have to live around here too.
I remember when playing Sim City, a frequent downfall for my city budget was wasting all my money on an expensive airport that was underutilized. It sure looked cool, however!
Only useful if you are going to high-rise commercial buildings. Other than that, big waste of money.
Yes, I play too much Simcity as well. The new Simcity is terrible though...
They only set a few up for comment, and if it gets too negative or heated they take down all the comments and the option to post new ones...guess they just want friendly academic debate on there. Oh the negativity of anonymous!
Just out of curiosity... what's worse: a food snob or a faux food snob? LoL!
Regardless, what is most certainly worse than either of the above is your monotone, Chicken Little post whining about a gloriously, bitingly sarcastic expose of Marilyn's KFC review.
"Is it even proper procedure to leave someone outside a vehicle unattended when they are pulled over?"
That is exactly the first thing I thought of! How un professional to leave a "suspect" (although he doesn't seem to fit *that* bill very well) outside of a car with the officers sitting inside like... well: Sitting ducks if something were to go awry. Could go horribly wrong... their assumptions could have led to the damage to the poor fellow trapped outside or to officers if he had indeed proved to be dangerous.
PS... ya just gotta love this disclaimer that the paper claims:
"The allegations *may* be found to be completely false. There *may* not be sufficient evidence to prove them true. They *may* be true, but the fault is with flawed department policy, not the officers. They *may* be true but officers acted lawfully and properly. Or they simply *may* be true, and the officers are at fault, Remer said."
Sounds like ole Remer is a reeeeeeeal Straight Shooter. ND style. Tax dollars well spent, eh?
Did anyone catch WDAZ news at 10:00 on Friday? Their lead story was expanding GFK. A couple of us saw the story and we swear that Milo started the story by saying GFK is "one of the busiest airports in the country". Can anyone confirm his comment?
Did anyone catch WDAZ news at 10:00 on Friday? Their lead story was expanding GFK. A couple of us saw the story and we swear that Milo started the story by saying GFK is "one of the busiest airports in the country". Can anyone confirm his comment?
What kind of confirmation do you want--That Milo said it or that GFK is one of the busiest airports in the country?
I think I heard him say it. I think that I also heard/read [some years ago] that GFK is one of the busiest airports in the country--that is that it has one of the largest numbers of planes landing and taking off [daily/weekly/monthly whatever]. This is because of UND's Aviation program and the student pilots. It certainly is not one of the busiest in terms of number of commercial passenger boardings, but from the Air Traffic Controllers point of view it is very busy. Grand Forks is in the habit of claiming whatever superlatives it can!
I am the aviation focal point at the local NWS office in town...and I did some research regarding the number of operations at each of the airports in our forecast area (E ND and NW MN). One operation is a take off and another operation is a landing. For GFK on a yearly basis the latest figures from the FAA was 225,000 operations/yr. Fargo was next at around 52,000/yr....then DVL and TVF at around 30,000/yr. GFK big use is by UND. There was a story in the Herald sometime last year I think about how GFK was in the top 50 in terms of busiest airports in the country...but again most of the operations is UND related.
Thanks for the WDAZ confirmation. The GFK stat is misleading. O'hare is one of the busiest airports too, but obviously the two airports don't even compare. If GFK can get Frontier and Allegiance, maybe they become the top 10 airport in the country :)
I can't wait until the Herald brushes that police brutality story under the rug...Grand Forks Herald to the rescue again, protecting us from the unbearable truth that GF isn't the utopia everyone believes it to be.
Your missing out if you never had a sub at grand junction. The guy went out of business from his two stores so is selling the subs from the downtown bar of gillys. Not so bad at all, a sub with a beer! yeeehaw!
wait the grand junction by blockbuster is closed? why did they move out of the happy harrys plaza anyways? you could hardly tell where they were in that stupid blockbuster plaza. only place to get it is gillys now?
Grand Junction? Worst food ever. Especially the fries. They would fry them , and then when you ordered, refry them. Double fried...Holy! Bad. Went there twice when they were in the HH Plaza. First time I thought maybe it was a new person maning the fryer. Nope, they did it a month later as well. Never went back.
Plus, my clothes smelled horrible after I left. Kind of like the Panda Buffett. You have to change your clothes after you leave (Although I do like the Panda Buffet occasionally, even with the wardrobe change).
"I can't wait until the Herald brushes that police brutality story under the rug...Grand Forks Herald to the rescue again, protecting us from the unbearable truth that GF isn't the utopia everyone believes it to be."
Just in case I missed something, tell me where I am wrong, Wentworth -- The Herald was the one that broke the story in the first place and put it on the front page. W DAZ followed them the next day, and KNOX news didn't even report it. Those are the big three news orgs in town. I would say KNOX is sweeping it under the rug, if anyone is. Just a thought.
oh and I dont know where you got the double fry business from. Everytime I've eaten it especially now he is at Gillys its always good. Messy, but delicious!
The whole idea of the Herald "brushing it under the rug" by hiding the story online is stupid. Anyone that reads the Herald online knows it's nearly impossible to follow articles past a day or two online... especially ones with comment sections.
Since thanksgiving there have been 4 days where the temperature has risen above freezing, I hate it!! I love the town, but this climate is too much for me.
The Herald sweeping things under the rug again? how about a stabbing Sat. night/Sun morning near a GF bar and NO mention of it in the paper...how is that not newsworthy, especially since the police were asking for the public's help in finding a suspect vehicle and possible suspect (on wdaz). Heraldo doing the "destination city" role for the mayor again??
Just FYI. Weekends are hit and miss for newstories making it in the paper since most of the weekend stuff (Monday included) is produced on Friday. I guarantee you'll see the stabbing story online today and in the paper tomorrow. Monday is weekend "catch-up day" in the newspaper business. I agree that it would be a very bad business practice to ignore high-interest news, and I don't think your local paper is thinking up ways to lose money. So all you consiracy theorists can take a nap now.
In regard to the post about if the times or movies are wrong in the Herald, I have some information. Yes, a local person gives the movie information to the paper. However, sometimes there are changes that come in later that are then called in to the Herald. However, they can never seem to get that information correct if there is a change. Once the info is in the Friday paper, the Herald WILL NOT change it until at least Monday. The internet info is controlled by corporate, so I don't know why that is wrong sometimes. Your best bet for movie info is to call the theatre directly. Col. 4 is 746-5620. Carmike 10 is 772-4719. Or you can drive by either theatre to get times. They are posted on the building under posters or on a sign in the window.
Another movie thing to mention is the attitude of those coming into the movies. Some people come in looking for something to complain about or are just plain in a bad mood. It is hard to please these people because nothing seems to be good enough. Many people come in happy and anxious to have a good movie experience. These people are the ones theatre employees love to deal with. It is easy to make them feel welcome and help them enjoy their movie experience. The stories theatre employees could tell, both good and bad. Isn't one of the things we learn in kindergarten is treat people how we want to be treated? There are good people at Carmike. Remember that please when you complain and rant about Carmike. Employees have no control over prices. They charge what comes up on their screen. They are just trying to do their jobs and make the movies a good experience for all.
wow - director of EERC again in trouble with the law...this time for assaulting his wife (adult abuse charge) - should be interesting to see if he can weasel his way out of this one too!
What is with places in GF and having inadequate lighting? You will never see me in the Kmart parking lot after dark (do they not know how to replace light bulbs). Also, who the heck would ever go to the motel that used to be the Westward Ho? Have you ever looked at that place at night? SCARY! Just looks like you are going to get mugged.
Why is it absolutely necessary to comment on every little thing in the Herald?
What does this story need commenting on? Does this incident have any effect on the way he runs the EERC? Does it effect Connie Triplett's performance as a commissioner or senator?
In other words, how does it affect you?
I suspect the only reason you would like to have the ability to comment on this is to start the anonymous bashing train.
I second that. This guy was put away for a little bit, his wife commented publicly on the matter, and I'm sure there will be a review either by Pres. Kupchella or soon-to-be Pres. Kelley on how this will affect UND's reputation.
What more needs to be said, other than the inevitable "Crazy wife beater" personal attacks on the guy?
Must be a Carmike manager or employee who previously posted about why the times get screwed up.
It is obvious the customer service is lacking when you tell people to call the theater directly or drive by to check the times of the movies. I hate to inform you, but always passing the blame on to others will not be good for business, especially in the movie business.
It is 2008, get the times right on the website, in the paper, or both.
So domestic violence is an okay thing depending on who you are??
Maybe it's time this Gerald guy gets some help with anger management and if he can't do it on his own, it's time for the courts to step in and mandate it before it gets worse.
If you feel the need to comment on everything, why not just start your own blog? Then people can follow what you want to talk about, without your comments getting scattered all over cyberspace.
---------- Campus Dakota: Serving students, not universities
EERC Director Gerald Groenewold assults wife County Commissioner and Dem State Senator Connie Triplett. Made Monday night news on WDAZ and Tuesday GF Herald paper. You can't make these things up !Tran has been on this story for days. Adult abuse, simple assult (fight, push, shove, and bruise on her face). Just your average "power couple", who is out of house for 4 months during leg session every other year. Connie pleads with police and County Attorney Peter Welte not to file charges against "hubby". "Hubby" a little bit intense at times, said Connie. But Connie called 911 asked for Police for help. Maybe take away the guns from "hubby" for awhile. Remember threats againsy Manvel firefighters, how about other fellow workers at EERC, ant threats there ? greenglass4
"So domestic violence is an okay thing depending on who you are??"
Never once did anyone advocate domestic violence on here.
You stated that maybe he needs help with anger management, will your commenting on the situation make that happen? Are you someone important enough to listened to implicitly? And for that matter, is it any of your business?
Sounds to me like Mr. Groenwold has anger managment issues. Also sounds like a wife that is used to getting abused (emotional and/or physical) and didn't want anything to happen to him as she knows what she will have in store later for her. Hope the man can admit he has problems, and seek help.
Just to change things up, does anyone know what schools has the meat recalled from them? I can find a list for Minnesota, but nothing for North Dakota.
"Why is it absolutely necessary to comment on every little thing in the Herald?
Some stuff just doesn't need your opinion."
you couldn't be more wrong.
This country prides itself on having a "free press" (however false that impression might actually be).
Despite our value of a free press, it would serve no more value than a cold turd if no people formed an opinion of this news voiced by the press.
Press and news are about information, sure. But that is only a tiny part of the picture. Without strong public opinions to help shape reaction, response and future direction then news is simply an academic endeavor... not real life.
Imagine if Washington and his cronies had simply kicked back another tin o' grog when they heard the "news" of the repressive British taxes they were facing.
Sure, a GFH comment might not save our country, but it contributes to our identity. Your repressive censorship at the source serves noone but shallow fools. Debate isn't always pleasant, but it serves us well in the end.
This also allows you to read any comments on an article.
Whether it gets used or not is not the point. The point is, the Herald shouldn't cherry pick articles which get comments and articles which don't.
Oh, and let it go eats it.
Okay, Kelly. The 'eats it' comment following a reasoned response to an equally anonymous, and, apparently, speech hating whiner, is ironic. It's a subtle form of humour. Kind of like that right there.
I noticed some people agree with me and some, like you and the anonymous 'let it go', disagree. Seems like there's room for more than one opinion here, you freedom hating nazi.
Oh noes! Tough guy anonymous name calling! Godwin's Law! I think the intertubes might rupture.
You see, THIS is what this whole argument is about.
Feeling compelled to give an anonymous, unsolicited opinion. I think 'Let It Go' is a coward as well for not having the guts to stand behind his/her opinions by signing it with their real name. Despite the fact that I may agree with them.
The internet is the perfect place for certain people to disengage themselves from society and prattle on about things in a manner they would NEVER do in real life in front of people.
If you can't stand behind your own opinions, and personally accept the consequences that arise from giving them, you shouldn't have the right to express them in the first place.
I don't think that makes me a "freedom hating Nazi" (as funny as that is to be called that!). I think that makes me an advocate of personal responsibility, something modern society has been sorely lacking as of late.
Kelly, you're an idiot. You came on this site and started bashing away with an anonymous screenname. Remember? Then, you were blown out of the shadows. Now, you champion some big, badass, "I post under my own name" shit.
That wasn't the anonymous that wrote the other responses. I'm that anonymous. We are legion. All seven of us.
I wouldn't call you an idiot, Kelly. I would call you an unreasonable blowhard with a hot temper (see comment two), though. Get YOURSELF under control there, tough guy, before YOU go prattling on.
I made a valid point--we should be able to comment on, for example, good police behavior, as well as bad police behavior. I don't see the problem.
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't call me that to my face in person.
But, then again, maybe I'm wrong. You could always say who you really are, and we could find out if you are actually that tough without the safety of anonymity.
But I kinda doubt it. You see, THAT'S how cowardice works. Taking tough-guy pot shots without actually putting yourself in the line of fire.
I realized that, and now I fully sign each and every post I make. I'm not the least bit afraid of my own opinions. I take responsibility for EVERYTHING I say. Even going as far as apologizing when I've made rude, uncalled for statements.
Try it sometime, you'll find being a responsible grownup man to be quite a liberating experience!
I would also like to add that I immediately, and fully, apologized for those comments I made toward Greenglass on City Beat.
It was late, and I was not in the correct state of mind for making comments about that subject.
My grandfather, a WWII vet, is going under the knife today to attempt to remove a cancer he is suffering from. I was deep in thought about the sacrifices he bravely made for his country, and how I may lose the last living link to that generation I have, when I came across Greenglass' comment about skipping Vietnam.
I'll admit, I got pissed off at him.
But...
My current situation with my grandfather's surgery today, and his possible death from it, is NO EXCUSE for me to lip off like that.
I'll say it again:
Greenglass, I'm sorry. You probably have your reasons for choosing not to go to war as a young man, and they are none of my business.
I'm proud of Kelly for his service, and I'm proud of greenglas for his decision to avoid fighting in an unjust and unnecessary war.
My dad served in Vietnam. He was drafted, and did one year. That one year did an unbelievable amount of damage to his life. Our family has spent the last thirty-nine years cleaning up from the fallout of that one year.
I'm proud of my dad for his service, but I can tell you I would be just as proud to hear that he dodged. Either decision has far ranging consequences.
I need to make it clear, Anonymous @ 6:38AM, that I have not had the honor of serving my country in the military. I am medically unable to join. I've tried.
I have, however, been trying to get Nine and Numb over there to entertain the troops. It's a long process, and we haven't been cleared yet.

Whre can I find Caul Fat and Leaf Fat in town or within a short drive?!!?
Please! My terrines will not be the same without it!
I think it's time those die hard Olive Garden fans start bugging the company. According to the Bismarck Blog http://www.kxnet.com/viewBlog.asp?BlogId=3 Olive Garden is talking to Bismarck
But if there was an Olive Garden here, there would never be any reason to go to Fargo.
I agree with bethski...Johnny Carinos is far beeter than olive garden
ment to say 'better'
Carino's has awesome food and great prices too! I would rather have a Johnny Carino's in GF than the Olive Garden.
5.99 all you can eat soup, salad, and bread sticks from OG sounds pretty appetizing to me.
Every blog turns into a discussion about Olive Garden. Come on people, there are other topics out there.
Why are there so many banks in GF. Every corner, there is a bank.
So... erm. about that Caul Fat?
Where the hell is global warming? Last winter was way warmer than this one so far.
Caul fat--I am assuming you tried L and M Meats? I am pretty sure it would have to be special ordered--never seen it in the case over there. Other than that I know it can be ordered online (how that works not sure). I have never used caul fat--wish I could be more help.
"Where the hell is global warming?"
Global warming is a myth.
If they quit calling it "global warming" and used the term "climate change" it would make more sense. It's not a myth...North Dakota should be one of the most concerned, climate shifts could ruin the ag industry.
When will an Olive Garden open in Grand Forks?
If an Olive Garden ever opens here in GF, the open blogs will have no posts.
You don't really want that now do you? ;-)
SO I keep hearing KCLD advertise that they bought 400 seats for a special movie night at River Cinema on Valentines Day. Does anyone know if this means the theater will be closed to the rest of the public? That would kind of put a damper in my V-Day plans...
Regarding Carmike......
"climate shifts could ruin the ag industry."
Or help it... a warmer and wetter climate would probably have a net benefit due to the longer growing season.
wannagrapple--
I am sorry I have no tried and true online source, but alot of the foodie blogs I read do mention some sources. The only other option you might have is the hutterite colony in Forest River. I believe they do whole hog butchering there and that would be a close source. They do sell their produce and meat in various places--
I am now really curious to try it also..LOL.
Wow, Carmike drops their prices and is scouting the River Cinema's concessions, but they still can't figure out it comes down to customer service. Amazing how simple the formula is.
Since when did it become illegal to go skinny-dipping in the hotel pools after hours? :-(
Refused to get dressed? Sounds like the young man wanted to keep the party rollin'!
"If they quit calling it "global warming" and used the term "climate change" it would make more sense. It's not a myth."
Of course the climates been changing the last four billion years.
About half the time it's been for the better.
P.S. Into the Wild is great movie. I highly suggest it.
I'd rather have a Romano's Macaroni Grill over Olive Garden or Carino's any day!
river cinema caused global warming
They just closed all the Carinos' down here in the Bay Area, and are planning on closing even more, so I wouldn't hold my breath over getting one in GF anytime soon.
Besides, Maggiano's, Spaghetti Werehouse and Buca di Beppo beat the ever-loving Hell out of Carino's and Olive Garden on their BEST days.
Atta boy, Kelly...bought time someone spoke up for Buca's! :o)
I ate with the whole family at Buca's in Broomfield, CO. Once you get used to the menu concept, it's a great place!
I love Joe's Basement! Great food, great service. But I don't see one coming anywhere near GFND for at least 10 years.
Nice job!
"I ate at one at the Orlando airport last week"
This is what locals get excited about? Not the possibility of Thai food, or Vietnamese or Indian or even regional Italian, but a chain? Disturbing. It reminds me of a neighbor who went down to the Twin Cities for the weekend recently. "Did you get to the Lotus?" I asked. "Oh no, we love the Applebee's in Burnsville."
Boycott the Olive Garden- they contribute to global warming with all those hot ovens going
There Will Be Blood is not showing at the Carmike now. That was the point of the above posters' rants.
There Will Be Blood has not played at the River Cinema either. I called them up and asked them this question and they said they haven't shown it and don't plan on getting the movie to show in the future.
8:50 am anon, I have never heard anybody complain about the use of the word "illegal." And I'm a pretty liberal person.
I have, however, heard plenty of people complain about the use of the word "immigrant."
"I was at the airport, doofus."
Sorry, thin-skinned blogger. In that case, maybe you could write a Zagat-like guide rating all the chains' airport locations.
I'll bet there are illegal immigrants washing dishes at the Fargo Olive Garden.
On the subject of local cuisine, it would appear that Kentucky Fried Chicken got a wonderful review by Marilyn today.
http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=67030§ion=Food
That bowl things IS nasty.
wanderingjew:
LOL. :) Have you been to the Vietnamese restaurant in Fargo? I hear they have pretty good pho there.
I haven't read such an essay on the KFC in... well, never. Thanks Marilyn.
Is the Columbia 4 going to be a cheaper second run theater? I see starting Friday older movies will be playing.
Is the Columbia 4 going to be a cheaper second run theater? I see starting Friday older movies will be playing.
Patton Oswald has a whole routine on the Famous KFC bowls. It sums the concept up quite nicely...
Fair warning, he uses the F-word a few times in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfan5MacmsI
Once palm trees start growing in Grand Forks, I'll start worrying about global warming. Until then, I'm all for it. I'm tired of this -20, -30 bulls**t! ;)
LoL at that review of KFC by Marilyn!!!
OMFGWTFROFLMAOBBQ!!!!
Harumph.

Greenglass, did you eat that bowl or smoke it?
Lynsey, definitely worth checking out
vcsuVikes, GFK is a horrible airport that is badly missmanaged. There will be no other flights to GFK except by NorthWest.
There is a slight chance we might get the alegiant airlines but don't count on anything else. Fargo is a much bigger airline and your better off driving the 75 miles to fly.
There isn't even enough room at the airport for another airline.
"she is a humorist"
The sad thing is she isn't; she's absolutely serious. Her columns pretty much show the complete lack of respect Jacobs et al have for their readers' intelligence.
"easy does it on Marlyn she is a humorist"
You spelled "idiot" wrong.
Ad in the paper shows the Columbia 4 theater is now $1 for all shows all the time.
A good move, as that theater should have switched to that kind of format a long time ago, but the lack of pressure forced them to do so.
wannagrapple,
What is the proper beverage pairing with a KF bowl? Pretentious much? CG, fire up your torch and get ready to pass it on. You know which one.
re: ^
Ridiculous.
We routinely drive down to the cities to fly. When considering multiple people, it is almost always several hundred dollars cheaper to fly out of MSP even with gas and parking $$$.
weird, i just flew my roomate to the cities this weekend. Costed about 200 bucks cheaper!
Nope, not gonna happen.
"wannagrapple,
What is the proper beverage pairing with a KFC bowl?"
anything but water. read my post again.
Did I read a new terminal for GFK? How can they justify this when they can't get any airlines.
Anybody know what is going up by Sams Club. To the East....so far it just a large chunk of steel....looks like a Sams Club sized building....
725 pm anonymous
That is the new Lithia Toyota dealership going up between Ford and Sams
The best option for both Grand Forks and Fargo would be for both of them to close their airport or just use it for private planes. Then open up one new large airport halfway in between the two cities and share it. This would give the entire area the best of both worlds. Multiple airlines and large pool of people to entice them to show up. The distance is about the same as most major cities.
It will never happen as both cities would never give up for the better of both cities.
I would agree. In alot of cities, the airport is located out of town.
Of course, I doubt Fargo would go for this.
Put a large airport near Mayville!!! Yes!!!
greenglass7
anonymous@8:29: That was a proposed project a few years back that never got off the ground (har har!).

To clarify two things about the airport.

Please. There is nothing faux about my academic snobbery.
Why is it that you can comment on only a few of the articles on the GFHerald web site and not all of them?
So, is that it now? The latest excuse is The Alerus is a failure because of lack of air service?
"WARNING ! ! Faux food snob Alert"
Just out of curiosity... what's worse: a food snob or a faux food snob? LoL!
Regardless, what is most certainly worse than either of the above is your monotone, Chicken Little post whining about a gloriously, bitingly sarcastic expose of Marilyn's KFC review.

Here is the police complaint article with comments restored. Comment away. =)
Complaint Against Police Officers
That's better.
from the comments on that article:
^ great!
many features available once one becomes blue!!
now if I could only get green.
"Grand Forks is in the habit of claiming whatever superlatives it can!"
CHER'S BIGGEST CONCERT WAS AT THE ALERUS!!!!!!
Thanks for the WDAZ confirmation. The GFK stat is misleading. O'hare is one of the busiest airports too, but obviously the two airports don't even compare. If GFK can get Frontier and Allegiance, maybe they become the top 10 airport in the country :)
"Grand Forks is in the habit of claiming whatever superlatives it can!"
You mean like 'international'?
^^
Bah, I meant that in regard to the airport.
Grand Junction now is serving at 11:30am at Gillys finally! yyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhawwww!
:o)
Just tryin to keep it positive here people....
Is it safe to say the town is suffering from Cabin Fever?
anon:
Yes, it is safe to say that. ALMOST SUMMER PEOPLE! HEADS UP
I can't wait until the Herald brushes that police brutality story under the rug...Grand Forks Herald to the rescue again, protecting us from the unbearable truth that GF isn't the utopia everyone believes it to be.
"Grand Junction now is serving at 11:30am at Gillys finally!"
what is a Grand Junction... and do you mean Gilly's as in the downtown bar? Are some new food items are happening, eh?
Your missing out if you never had a sub at grand junction. The guy went out of business from his two stores so is selling the subs from the downtown bar of gillys. Not so bad at all, a sub with a beer! yeeehaw!
You're
wait the grand junction by blockbuster is closed? why did they move out of the happy harrys plaza anyways? you could hardly tell where they were in that stupid blockbuster plaza. only place to get it is gillys now?
Perhaps Marilyn can rate McDonald's next. Looking forward to it.
Just a thought.
rumor mill told me the owners brother screwed him out of alot of money. Forcing GJ to close his stores.
oh and I dont know where you got the double fry business from.
Ditto, the weather. Depressing.

"Perhaps Marilyn can rate McDonald's next. Looking forward to it."
She already has. BK too iirc.
Hey, Erin! I didn't know you blogged on here too. Welcome.
"Why can't Grand Forks run a shuttle service from Fargo's airport to the five-star hotels in Grand Forks"
Where is there a 5-star hotel in Grand Forks?

Eh... it happened at El Roco, not really news ;)
wow - director of EERC again in trouble with the law...this time for assaulting his wife (adult abuse charge) - should be interesting to see if he can weasel his way out of this one too!
Sorry - that's a typo - I meant three star hotels (Cannad Inn, Ramada, Holiday Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Townhouse).
EERC Director In Trouble Again - COMMENTS!
Why does the Herald not have comment links on these articles? As a matter of fact, I don't see comment links on any articles today. WTF?
Why is it absolutely necessary to comment on every little thing in the Herald?
What does this story need commenting on? Does this incident have any effect on the way he runs the EERC? Does it effect Connie Triplett's performance as a commissioner or senator?
In other words, how does it affect you?
I suspect the only reason you would like to have the ability to comment on this is to start the anonymous bashing train.
Some stuff just doesn't need your opinion.
Hear, Hear!
Anon @ 7:37 AM, I thought you signed all of your posts Greenass4?
"What does this story need commenting on? "
So domestic violence is an okay thing depending on who you are??
Maybe it's time this Gerald guy gets some help with anger management and if he can't do it on his own, it's time for the courts to step in and mandate it before it gets worse.
Another way to comment on Herald articles, though it may be "old fashioned" is a letter to the editor.
If you feel the need to comment on everything, why not just start your own blog? Then people can follow what you want to talk about, without your comments getting scattered all over cyberspace.

Just wondering...
Boo. Hoo. I'm glad you're irritated.
To get to the comments page on any GF Herald article, just add page=comments& after the ? in the URL. For example:
http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=67875§ion=homepage
would become
http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?page=comments&id=67875§ion=homepage
This also allows you to read any comments on an article.
Whether it gets used or not is not the point. The point is, the Herald shouldn't cherry pick articles which get comments and articles which don't.
Oh, and let it go eats it.
Why is it absolutely necessary to comment on every little thing in the Herald?

"I suspect the only reason you would like to have the ability to comment on this is to start the anonymous bashing train."
"Oh, and let it go eats it."
Pretty sure 'Let It Go' just proved his/her point with that one! Heh!
Gotta love Anonymous tough guys!
Weasel!
Zing!
But, I'm not an idiot...
Yup, Kelly...weasel!
Wow...
I see I've still got fans on here!
Please forgive my rudeness.
Dear Mr Clow. I understand your comments, and thanks for them here and in Trans blog. I choose not to go, and am proud that I did not go. greenglass4.
"I choose not to go, and am proud that I did not go. yellowass4."
Yep... Keep telling yourself that, it's amazing what the mind can do.
"I'm proud of Kelly for his service"
I need to make it clear, Anonymous @ 6:38AM, that I have not had the honor of serving my country in the military. I am medically unable to join. I've tried.
I have, however, been trying to get Nine and Numb over there to entertain the troops. It's a long process, and we haven't been cleared yet.
I'm sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you served in Vietnam.
"I thought you served in Vietnam."
Oh, good lord, no! I was born in the late 70's!! Ha Ha!! :)
Hell, I was too young for Bosnia.
My FATHER was just barely old enough to be in the Navy during the last years of Vietnam.
Thank you anyway! :)
Thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering if CiCi's had invaded Souper Salad.
