What's with everyone--really at work this Monday morning?
I'd like to see some comments on the National Geographic article. It is certainly part of our state. Perhaps we can capitalize on this and have a regular tour of the 'ghost towns'.
Some of the comments on the Herald are ludicrous. It's as if NG stabbed a few people in the heart. Every writer will have some slant to the story... do you really expect an article about ND ghost towns (note this is not about all of ND), to be happy and optimistic? Obviously many peoples dreams ended badly out west.
I myself thought the article was good, but the photography seemed subpar.
75 degrees in Orange County yesterday - more of that all week. The beaches are packed!

Oh, and I agree with the above anonymous. I know quite a few people that are pretty pissed at the article, but I just don't see what's wrong with it - it was fairly specifically about the western ghost towns - and accurate as far as I can tell (my father owned a property in Wheelock that fit the exact description in the article - burned out and abandoned).
After reading the Herald comments, it really seems like most ND'ers have some sort of inferiority complex.
I guess you can't talk bad about the state unless you're from here, but I don't know what it says about someone when they think that was a hit-piece.

What I think is funny about the article relative to western N.D. is that the writer probably stayed in a hotel in Williston while checking out Hanks, Epping, Charboneau, etc. There is a good chance he had to go to several hotels to get a room as they are all full with oil workers. Williston's population is growing right now and the place is booming. I guess he didn't notice...
I heard that the author only does "dark" articles, he is into depression, suicide, ghettos, gangs, drug live, etc. it is his style and subject matter. Besides this article will keep out criminals and riff raff. greenglass4.

Can't believe you folks haven't commented on DAZ's remodeling job. (Hopefully you've moved past your hangups regarding the local tv station!)
WHAT! DAZ doesn't look like the 80s anymore? I might have to turn the tv on.
WDAZ hasn't remodeled yet. They said tonight that they are doing the news from the newsroom while they tear out the old set. They had some pictures of them demolishing it. Can't remember if they said how long it would take to get the new set ready. Hope it's an improvement, but what really matters is the content of the news and I'll take local news from Grand Forks from an ugly set before I'll watch a bunch of Fargo news from a nice looking set. I think the merged KX and KVlY stations now have one reporter in Grand Forks that they share and FOX has never had a reporter even stationed here. I'll stick with WDAZ.
I don't know why people hated WDAZ. Maybe it's because KVLY never has anything about GF and with KX merged it's going to be more of the same. Unfortunately I don't think that weather and one news story a week count as being about Grand Forks.
A new set will be nice, but I actually liked their old set. Maybe they could use some touch up with their computer graphics, but who really cares...it's the news not the latest video game.
WDAZ's look has needed an update for several years. They also could upgrade their techology a bit and stop using cameras and equipment that were new in the 1970's.

I am not so much jealous of the MacWorld attendance as I am of the San Francisco part. Where do you plan to eat with all those amazing choices out there?
Whether you were enraged or engaged by the National Geographic Article about ND, it does bring up an interesting point that I don't often think about, which is abandoned buildings. The article featured buildings in the prairie, but what about those in town? It seems like there would be some very interesting stories about some buildings in GF/EGF that have sat empty for a long time. I can't understand why there are so many, especially because property tax doesn't stop, just because the space isn't occupied. After a while, we tend to overlook them, such as the old Hardees on Demers and Washington, the old Java Express on Demers and 4th St. NW, the empty storefronts in the downtowns, etc. Even the Leevers building is sitting vacant now. Meanwhile, we're still building on green land and sprawling out (clearly not a sustainable development pattern). I haven't lived here long enough to know what some buildings around town used to be, and why they are still sitting empty. If anyone has knowledge or stories of some of these buildings, please share. Ideas on how to infill this city would also be interesting.
So Dale what's new at MacWorld? I need to replace my iMac with a Mac Mini or similar.
RE:National Geographic article
I heard part of the interview with the author on NPR and to me it sounds like he will write anything that brings in a paycheck. Sounded like a nice guy. I also read the article on NG's website and it wasn't that bad. If everyone keeps making a stink about it - it should help everybody with the attention it generates. If it generate a demand, I'll bet he would write more about ND. Wouldn't hurt.
Yeah, more about those thin-skinned, defensive North Dakotans. People will really want to relocate here now.
So someone on here HAS to know more details about T.J. Oshie's arrest. Why was he and the New Hampshire player arrested? The Herald's saying it's "disorderly conduct." I want to hear more about this...come on people, let's fire up the rumor mill.
I heard that they were urinating in the elevator? Is that what other people heard?
I heard from a girl who went to school with TJ's friend that they were urinating into a rusty old bucket and then splashing it each other.
You know, there are more appropriate places than this blog to talk about Oshie. One or two local message boards come to mind off the top of my head, one dedicated to UND hockey and the other to UND as a university.

Anyways, I thoroughly enjoy seeing hockey players go down... I'm sick of their "above the law" attitudes and how they get whatever they want in this city.
I heard that the two players were good friends (went to school together) and they were up at Oshie's house. They had been drinking and took the elevator downstairs. The elevator was stuck for over 90 minutes and they ended up peeing in the elevator.
Truth? I don't know...

You were looking for more info. I was trying to point you to places where it was already available. Didn't mean to make a big deal out of it.
That's the story I heard as well. It's not as "disorderly" as one might imagine - and the two players involved are friends. They got stuck in an elevator shaft for over an hour. Yes - they had been drinking - and that's why they weren't looking for the video camera - but an hour wait for help seems excessive.
I was really sad to hear Bob Brooks passed away. He was a good guy who liked to listen to people.

They did cover you and Ntractive a little bit in today's St. Paul Pioneer Press in an article about Macworld.
I agree that the article was done in all fairness, it is an essay (and is hardly new news as far as the sad nostalgia that goes with these abandoned farmhouses/towns)... but at the same time, it was done with nary a positive spark. There was a caption to an old junker car that said something like "cars are abandoned when they no longer help you leave..." I mean, really. It is exaggerated; almost makes me think this "suffering" they report on in the third world isn't really that bad.......
New Mayor in Grand Forks ? Mike McNamara (talk show host) today on Dakota H talk show on KNOX made a hint he will announce he is running for mayor against Mayor Brown> Will Mac run from Iraq ? or Ward 2 ? Stay tuned to KNOX. greenglass4.
I'm actually excited to see what WDAZ's new set is going to look like. Any idea when they will start using it? The old set wasn't so terrible, but it wasn't all that professional looking. I hope the new set won't make use of a big screen tv just sitting there and hopefully there won't be any carpeting on the walls. I also like the new WDAZ theme music.
GFG, why not start an Alerus thread? The property just completed and absolutely horrible year. The commission is spinning it as a success. Time to provide more information, the citizens aren't getting the complete story from the conventional media.
Well I am thinking that one not have "heart tests" at Altru ! You may die ! I had a stress test, but as a former runner the second test was an injection, not running on a treadmill ! Bad decision. Check out Mayo instead and live. greenglass4.
Pretty big irony there: guy goes in for an angiogram and dies of a heart attack on the table. I had one done years ago at Altru, and it looked like O'Hare airport, people in the OR, people on gurnies in the hall, people in the waiting room. I came to the conclusion that the Cardiology Dept. at Altru was a huge cash cow for the place.
Is Grand Junction still open on Wash? What are the hours. Went there a couple of times this last week around 5 at night and the place was dark...

As I was saying in a different thread, Grand Junction is moving to Gilly's. I know nothing of their old location, I guess, but can tell you that I spoke with Josh Gilleland a few weeks ago, and he told me that he had made a deal with the owners of Grand Junction to bring their business to the kitchen at Gilly's.
So, I have a topic for you all. This goes hand-in-hand with that recent story about the UFO spotting in Texas...
Just recently, I was working at a Subway here in town and a woman came in with a shoe box. I served her, then she sat down, opened up the shoe box, and pulled out a camcorder. A few minutes later, she walked back up to the counter where a co-worker and I were standing, and she turned the camera toward us so that we could see the LCD display on the back. The video she showed us was taken in broad daylight, and showed a metallic, disc-like object hovering in the sky right above a tree line. Clear as day, and obviously not an airplane. Everyone I was working with agreed, this video, if it was real, was probably the clearest evidence that any of us had ever seen proving the existence of UFO's.
The lady told us that she had filmed it herself and that she was on her way to drop the tape in the mail. She said she had talked to a few people within a government agency (though, which one it was escapes me at the moment) and they asked to see the footage for themselves. But the tape was just too good not to share, she thought, so she let us Subway employees in on it. I'm glad she did... I'd just like to know what ever came from that tape.
I know it's a long shot, but has anyone here heard of this? This woman was quick to show us (complete strangers), so I can only imagine that friends of hers would have seen the tape, as well. It WAS pretty spectacular.
I was pretty convinced it was real, so I'd like to know.

There's a retired Indian Studies prof from UND who insists he had a close encounter of the tird kind. Don't remember his name, but I understand the UFO course he taught there was very popular.

Had an HS project that turned into a UFO sighting. We made a bunch of hot air balloons out of thin-mil clear plastic sheets. Made a basket/base of balsa wood and used a whole pack of candles. Used a Eurosealer to seal the balloon and pre-heated before launch with a hair dryer. Ignited candles and off it went. If you do a few at the same time you can get some UFO sightings out of it ;) They float somewhat irregularly, but close together, so they shift shape and flicker at the same time.
What's with the Denny's sign? Is it supposed to be off center, and hanging off the side of the building? It looks stupid!

Grand Junction is a grilled sub shop, and they're delicious. If you're lucky, the sandwich ninja cooks your food, and he does some pretty sweet moves.
Their food is really good.
