This is something I've been considering for awhile: Does the GF post office need an overhaul? It seems like every time I've had to go in to mail or pick up a package, I've been about the 10th person in line. However, their customer service counter doesn't appear to have any more space for helping customers, and the postal workers seem to handle everything as efficiently as possible. It just seems like they're understaffed and outgrowing the current post office. I noticed there was some remodeling work taking place last time I was in, but it didn't appear to be anything to fix the long lines. IDK, what do you all think?
There has been discussion on this site in the past about the desire for GF to get a Fresh Market store somewhere in town. I have, for the most part, kept out of that discussion because I had no experience with Fresh Market other than what I had heard about the place.
Well, today that changed.
I went shopping today here in Tampa and I saw a Fresh Market store on my way home, and having remembered all the talk about it on here I decided to take a look around. I can only say that I was absolutely STUNNED at how nice a place it was. I went in with the intention to just browse, and left over an hour later with $30 in produce, organic coffee beans, and freshly made peanut butter (that I ground myself, in the store, thank you very much!).
Now, I'm no gourmet. In fact, I normally shop for my groceries at Super Wal-Mart or Publix, but I plan on doing much more of my fruit and vegetable shopping at Fresh Market from now on.
I'm not sure GF has the market for such a specialized store, but I am now VERY MUCH in favor of GF getting one, or at least Fargo. If you have never been to one, you need to go.
Actually, North Dakota took the first available opportunity to slam Minnesota on their bridge maintenance and boast about how much better the North Dakota bridges are. I can't remember which engineer they had asked about it, but he cited the flooding we get through the valley as a major factor that influenced the import ND places on their bridges and went into great detail about how often the bridges are inspected. I personally thought it was a little distasteful for him to be making such a statement blaming Minnesotan maintenance before inspection of the bridge had been performed, but that's politics I suppose.
Things in Minnesota have really changed over the last decade. I remember, as a kid, driving from ND into Minnesota, thinking how much smoother MN roads were and that they had reflectors, as well as stripes, separating lanes. These days, there are just as many potholes and uneven surfaces in MN as ND.
Lines at the Post Office really vary with what time you're in there. There have been healthy lines at lunch and post-3PM for years. They currently have four and a half windows (half being the guy to the right as you walk in, who can sell stamps and a few other things, but not all services,) which should be plenty for Grand Forks.
Hopefully more people will realize that the automated machine out in the lobby will handle most mailing issues, and you don't need to talk to a clerk to buy stamps or mail a letter, Priority Mail or normal package. If you need to pick up mail or send something weird, then go inside. Otherwise, the machine is your best friend.

Apparently I'm going to the wrong post office because I have never seen four windows at the Grand Forks Post Office. On a good day over the lunch hour I have seen 2 people working the desk. But, I also understand that by going there at 12:30 it's going to be busy and I need to be patient.
greenglass4 I will have to disagree with you. In a state the size of North Dakota with less then 700,000 total residents I can't believe you'd get a more fair trial in Minot or Grand Forks as compaired to Valley City. I think it's quite funny how they are changing venues for this trial in a state where everyone knows everyone else and statewide media has put out trial coverage from the fist show in Minot. It's not like this is California and you could go from San Diego to Sacramento. How much money are we wasting in the pursuit of justice to cart this guy all over the state?

I agree. I just so happen to be a casual stamp collector (nerd!) and heaven forbid I ask a window clerk for a particular stamp. The Post Office used to sell nice shrink-wrapped packages of every stamp as it was issued. Now, you have to either order online/through the mail or ask a window clerk for the stamp(s) you're looking for. They act very rude and are very unfamiliar with the stamps that are out there. I have asked them specifically for stamps that have been very recently issued and they look at me as though they've never even heard of the stamp. They also sell very few different kinds of stamps now too. It's much easier to just send in my order now and then. So, yes, I agree that customer service at the PO has a long ways to go!
I went to the Post Office last week about mid morning. The clerk on the right asked me to come to her area so I wouldn't have to wait. There were only 2 people at the main counter-both being helped. She offered me a choice of 3-4 different stamps and I hadn't asked. While she didn't offer me coffee, I thought she was a lot more pleasant and helpful than most the staff at Walmart. And no-I don't work at Target.

There is one clerk at the PO that seems a bit more helpful than the others. She's the small brunette with short(er) hair. I think she's fairly new at the counter, and it shows. Not in her service, which is above average for the PO, but because she seems more eager to please than the rest of them put together.
I was in line last week, when there was one window open (the aforementioned clerk's). Despite the line actually going out the door to the counter in the lobby (no exaggeration), the two window clerks who were not open didn't even look up from their counting, or whatever they were doing, to even acknowledge the problem, heaven forbid actually open up another window or two, or request a a manager to do so.
This is why I end up doing a lot of PO visits in EGF. At least you'll get a smile back, and a "thank you."
For your information: the Moe Gibbs trial may be delayed or moved from Grand Forks. Call 701-298-9363 and find out why. People should expect lines, thus the availability of automated machines to take care of most routine things. I suspect it's simply easier to bitch in here than take a moment to find out how to use the automated services at the post office.
The people at the window? Smile---and you'll get the same in return; time after time. Not only will they return the smile, they also have delightful senses of humor if given the chance.
The guy to the right---used to be Eugene Brueckner, who could teach the human relations experts a whole lot, recently retired, but he added a bright ray to everyone's day!
Hopefully, rumors of a more dictating management style at the local p.o. won't change any of that.

I don't see how the jury pool could get any more polluted. If you watch the news or read the paper, then you should know all about the Moe Gibbs trial. Unfortunately, the chance of finding a jury in this area that doesn't already know about the trial, and has not already formed their own opinion is going to be extremely difficult. Hopefully, the jurors that are picked are able to put aside their own opinions and base their decisions on the facts of the case.
Obviously, "Mr. Mac" would not be a good juror for this case.
For the record, I *usually* use the kiosk, but the past few things I've needed from the PO have required counter service, and that's where I've gotten burned. For example, I stood in line 15 minutes to ask if insurance covers full replacement value on electronics, or if it covers just the value of a year-old electronic device. I got no real answer, followed with "If it's that valuable, maybe you shouldn't mail it."
And, like grandforksguy, I do some stamp collecting. Those kiosks don't give you Judy Garland stamps, unfortunately. GFG, thanks for pointing out I can get them online, though!

I'm extremely friendly to everyone I meet. I've worked in the service industry, and no matter how dumb the question you need to answer/react in such a way as to make the person feel satisfied with the service. I don't get that at the PO, and neither have a lot of people I talk to.

The psychotherapist's full report received into evidence at the hearing was rather guarded in its diagnosis. The report noted that Gary scored significantly below the average on one measure of general credibility tests and that he demonstrated some cognitive distortions regarding sexual-offense behavior. There was no evidence presented to indicate that Gary has ever acknowledged responsibility for traumatizing Christine by sexual abuse or by the extended abduction. The court noted that although the Minnesota restraining orders prohibiting Gary from harassing Delores, prohibiting him from living within one mile of Delores, and prohibiting him from seeking to visit the child, "may no longer be in effect," Gary "manifested extreme insensitivity to the child's best interest by moving so close that she must be afraid to leave her house without an escort and is likely to see him 'in the neighborhood.'" Further, the Hawaii court observed that because of Gary's move to Hawaii and the indifference he has shown, Delores "acted appropriately under the circumstances in sending Christine to spend this coming school year in North Dakota with family members." The Hawaii court issued an order denying Gary's motion to modify visitation.

This is something I've been considering for awhile: Does the GF post office need an overhaul? It seems like every time I've had to go in to mail or pick up a package, I've been about the 10th person in line. However, their customer service counter doesn't appear to have any more space for helping customers, and the postal workers seem to handle everything as efficiently as possible. It just seems like they're understaffed and outgrowing the current post office. I noticed there was some remodeling work taking place last time I was in, but it didn't appear to be anything to fix the long lines. IDK, what do you all think?
ReplyDeleteThere has been discussion on this site in the past about the desire for GF to get a Fresh Market store somewhere in town. I have, for the most part, kept out of that discussion because I had no experience with Fresh Market other than what I had heard about the place.
ReplyDeleteWell, today that changed.
I went shopping today here in Tampa and I saw a Fresh Market store on my way home, and having remembered all the talk about it on here I decided to take a look around. I can only say that I was absolutely STUNNED at how nice a place it was. I went in with the intention to just browse, and left over an hour later with $30 in produce, organic coffee beans, and freshly made peanut butter (that I ground myself, in the store, thank you very much!).
Now, I'm no gourmet. In fact, I normally shop for my groceries at Super Wal-Mart or Publix, but I plan on doing much more of my fruit and vegetable shopping at Fresh Market from now on.
I'm not sure GF has the market for such a specialized store, but I am now VERY MUCH in favor of GF getting one, or at least Fargo. If you have never been to one, you need to go.
I may have missed it, and I live out of state, but has anything been written about the safety of GF and Northeast ND bridges?
ReplyDeleteActually, North Dakota took the first available opportunity to slam Minnesota on their bridge maintenance and boast about how much better the North Dakota bridges are. I can't remember which engineer they had asked about it, but he cited the flooding we get through the valley as a major factor that influenced the import ND places on their bridges and went into great detail about how often the bridges are inspected. I personally thought it was a little distasteful for him to be making such a statement blaming Minnesotan maintenance before inspection of the bridge had been performed, but that's politics I suppose.
ReplyDeleteThings in Minnesota have really changed over the last decade. I remember, as a kid, driving from ND into Minnesota, thinking how much smoother MN roads were and that they had reflectors, as well as stripes, separating lanes. These days, there are just as many potholes and uneven surfaces in MN as ND.
ReplyDeleteLines at the Post Office really vary with what time you're in there. There have been healthy lines at lunch and post-3PM for years. They currently have four and a half windows (half being the guy to the right as you walk in, who can sell stamps and a few other things, but not all services,) which should be plenty for Grand Forks.
ReplyDeleteHopefully more people will realize that the automated machine out in the lobby will handle most mailing issues, and you don't need to talk to a clerk to buy stamps or mail a letter, Priority Mail or normal package. If you need to pick up mail or send something weird, then go inside. Otherwise, the machine is your best friend.

On a good day over the lunch hour I have seen 2 people working the desk. But, I also understand that by going there at 12:30 it's going to be busy and I need to be patient.

In a state the size of North Dakota with less then 700,000 total residents I can't believe you'd get a more fair trial in Minot or Grand Forks as compaired to Valley City. I think it's quite funny how they are changing venues for this trial in a state where everyone knows everyone else and statewide media has put out trial coverage from the fist show in Minot. It's not like this is California and you could go from San Diego to Sacramento. How much money are we wasting in the pursuit of justice to cart this guy all over the state?

ReplyDeleteI agree. I just so happen to be a casual stamp collector (nerd!) and heaven forbid I ask a window clerk for a particular stamp. The Post Office used to sell nice shrink-wrapped packages of every stamp as it was issued. Now, you have to either order online/through the mail or ask a window clerk for the stamp(s) you're looking for. They act very rude and are very unfamiliar with the stamps that are out there. I have asked them specifically for stamps that have been very recently issued and they look at me as though they've never even heard of the stamp. They also sell very few different kinds of stamps now too. It's much easier to just send in my order now and then. So, yes, I agree that customer service at the PO has a long ways to go!
I went to the Post Office last week about mid morning. The clerk on the right asked me to come to her area so I wouldn't have to wait. There were only 2 people at the main counter-both being helped. She offered me a choice of 3-4 different stamps and I hadn't asked. While she didn't offer me coffee, I thought she was a lot more pleasant and helpful than most the staff at Walmart. And no-I don't work at Target.

There is one clerk at the PO that seems a bit more helpful than the others. She's the small brunette with short(er) hair. I think she's fairly new at the counter, and it shows. Not in her service, which is above average for the PO, but because she seems more eager to please than the rest of them put together.
I was in line last week, when there was one window open (the aforementioned clerk's). Despite the line actually going out the door to the counter in the lobby (no exaggeration), the two window clerks who were not open didn't even look up from their counting, or whatever they were doing, to even acknowledge the problem, heaven forbid actually open up another window or two, or request a a manager to do so.
This is why I end up doing a lot of PO visits in EGF. At least you'll get a smile back, and a "thank you."
For your information: the Moe Gibbs trial may be delayed or moved from Grand Forks. Call 701-298-9363 and find out why. Mr Mac may have polluted the jury pool in Grand Forks, and by encouraging "vigilante justice" in Grand Forks, sorry to tell you Mr Mac this is not lawless Iraq. The people at the window? Smile---and you'll get the same in return; time after time. Not only will they return the smile, they also have delightful senses of humor if given the chance.
The guy to the right---used to be Eugene Brueckner, who could teach the human relations experts a whole lot, recently retired, but he added a bright ray to everyone's day!
Hopefully, rumors of a more dictating management style at the local p.o. won't change any of that.

I don't see how the jury pool could get any more polluted. If you watch the news or read the paper, then you should know all about the Moe Gibbs trial. Unfortunately, the chance of finding a jury in this area that doesn't already know about the trial, and has not already formed their own opinion is going to be extremely difficult. Hopefully, the jurors that are picked are able to put aside their own opinions and base their decisions on the facts of the case.

For the record, I *usually* use the kiosk, but the past few things I've needed from the PO have required counter service, and that's where I've gotten burned. For example, I stood in line 15 minutes to ask if insurance covers full replacement value on electronics, or if it covers just the value of a year-old electronic device. I got no real answer, followed with "If it's that valuable, maybe you shouldn't mail it."

I'm extremely friendly to everyone I meet. I've worked in the service industry, and no matter how dumb the question you need to answer/react in such a way as to make the person feel satisfied with the service. I don't get that at the PO, and neither have a lot of people I talk to.

Further, the Hawaii court observed that because of Gary's move to Hawaii and the indifference he has shown, Delores "acted appropriately under the circumstances in sending Christine to spend this coming school year in North Dakota with family members." The Hawaii court issued an order denying Gary's motion to modify visitation.
