Hey the subject is Federal Student Loans. Sen. Clinton has introduced Sen. Bill # 511 "A Student Borrower Bill of Rights". What happens now is like the Mafia runs things at Dept of Ed. Sen Conrad has signed on to this bill also. Private collection agencies now contract with Dept of Ed like they do with IRS. Charge 28% interest, ad collection fees 0f $8,000 to each account. More later. greenglass4.

greenglass: is your foil hat loose? Methinks you ought to tighten it and pay attention to the real world (and correct punctuation/spelling!).

How about a thread focusing on someone in retail or some waitstaff that stands out for a job well done? It'd be entertaining and enlightening, I think, to see how many in the Grand Forks area excel in their job. There are many, for sure!

Today, a holiday, no less (I mention that as she probably would rather have had the day off, too) a cashier in Target---Laine---went out of her way to be helpful and attentive to not only me, but my six year old granddaughter as well. Sure makes the day a lot brighter.

I like Charlie's idea.

There is a guy who works in the fitting rooms at Old Navy (I don't know his name) who always does a great job of going to find things for me, or he will actually do a merchandise locater to find it for me within the building if he can't find it. I found a skirt and blazer I loved on the clearance racks a few weeks ago, and though he couldn't find it, he did let me know he suspected it was an online exclusive someone had ordered and returned to the store, and suggested I look there for a blazer in the right size.

I like the ideas of finding a person going above and beyond...
By the way - has someone in the city made WDAZ mad? each of the last two nights they have had pieces on how much the city spends. First on "overpaid" department heads, then on the public information office. (interesting how department heads in GF make more than their counterparts, but most regular city employees make less hmmmm...)

WDAZ and the city banter on a regular basis....Kevin Dean (city information office) used to work at WDAZ.

Anyone see an DAZ hotties?

What happened to KXJC a few years ago? It was the CBS station for Grand Forks and it was the only other local TV news besides WDAZ, the ABC station

Anonymous said...

Yeah, one lonely reporter who looked like he was in someone's basement. I don't think they found it financially viable, but they set it up to fail.

Anyone know what's happening with the "Welcome to GF" signage as part of the Gateway Dr. improvment project. The Herald and Grand Forks Life both made a big deal about it and I haven't heard a peep since the justified outcry over fraudulent voting.

Ahh, coming back to you now?

"Anyone see an DAZ hotties?"

Dullum's a hottie.
Then only problem is, he leaves a lot of make-up on your pillow.

I see the WDAZ reporters out fairly regularly, but you'd barely recognize them. It's interesting how different they look when they're not at work. I've seen Cassie Walder at Target several times in sweats and a ponytail. It took me a few seconds to realize who she was.

I heard a rumor that GF Goodribs is closing or has closed?

Anonymous said...

Wouldn't surprise me, it's always dead in there. But I really like the food!

Anonymous said...

I called GF Goodribs earlier this summer because I saw their building listed for sale. The staff that answered the phone said they were accepting reservations for functions throughout the summer months. They wouldn't say anything else...
They supply the catering/food for the Engelstad and King's Walk so they may do well enough with just those challenges.

Back when all the new chains opened I wondered which once-successful local restaurants were going to take the hit and have to close.

Tally-to-date:

Jeannie's
Ponderosa
GF Goodribs?
I suppose you could throw in Capone's - although they were never really successful, that may have been in part to what was happening around town.

My guess as to the next ones to fall - Grizzly's and Campbell's. Anybody else care to hazard a guess?

I guess it's cool if you like having basically the same food and same menu anywhere you go.

It'd be cool if someone could make a graphical timeline of restaurants in GF since it's our favorite topic up in here.

Anonymous said...

why does everybody think that Jeannie's closed due to lack of business? The owners made it very clear during their WDAZ interview that they were retiring and they were trying to sell the restaurant. The interested party happened to be an auto parts store, not a restaurant, therefore, the place closed.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm...

If I owned a restaurant and I had to close it, I would come up with something other than a lack of business too. It was just a coincidence that they decided to close their business and retire after the place started tanking.

Goodribs, if it closes, will go down because their quality wasn't what it once was. Ten years ago, it was fine dining with excellent food. The last few times I went, it was semi-fine dining with average food. Criticize them all you want, but one taste of the ribs at Texas Roadhouse, and I knew that I wasn't going to go back to GF Goodribs, ever.

If they'd have stayed where they were, quality wise, ten years ago, that wouldn't be true.

I haven't been to Grizzly's lately, but they always seemed to be very busy in the past. In that part of town, I'm amazed that Ground Round has lasted as long as it has.

Campbell's is up and down, but their bad location seems to contribute far more than food quality. Mamma Maria's suffers from a similar malady. I would be sad to see either leave, though, as they're on the frequent rotation list. Grand Junction went from a decent location to one of the worst in town, and they were still shaking out opening issues the last time we went there. Time will tell if they last.

Still Fighting It said...

I have to agree on the location issues, Dale. I also should say that I don't want to see any of these businesses close, it's just that I don't think GF can support eleventy billion restaurants. I wish it could...

Bring back Toppers.
Also, I recall there used to be a restaurant called Uglies before Toppers went in, which had the Ugly Burger.

Does anyone know what is going on over in the old Budget Furniture Store on Gateway? Looks like activity over there the past few days.

I'm new to town and will soon need to bring my VW to a dealership for some work. I've read some negative reviews of the place down in Fargo, so I'm curious what dealerships VW owners in GF take their cars to.

The third restaurant in the Canad Inn, L'Bistro, is supposed to open on July 16. It should be a pretty classy place, from what I've heard so far.

We've had this conversation before, but when local restaurants refuse to update their menus, upgrade their service or reinvest in their infrastructure, why should they expect our business?

Thoughts running through my head. Anyone have any comments?

- New downtown Subway opened last Friday and is open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday night (or morning). How is business?
- South Washington development. Valley Dairy south of car wash has put up walls. Next door strip has Crary and lumber (Dakota?). What do they do? Are they associated with Crary?
- South Columbia development. Bank Forward has been discussed here before, but there's a sign about a future home at 47th and Columbia.
- Other downtown stuff. Brownstones set to open. How's business at the Crosstown Lounge? When is the martini bar at the old Edge set to open? Sheet rock was up a few weeks ago.
- Two relatively new board/video/card game stores are open. 30 Rock (?) next to Taco Bell on Wash. and other spot on 5th Ave. N. across from Central. Filling the void of the old card shops from days of yore?
- Other downtown vacancies. Luthern Social Services and CVIC have moved on/consolidated. What's next for both the organizations and their former homes?

Anonymous said...

I heard that the city approved a permit for two pretty large projects. A retirement community near 47th/South Washington and apartments for the old YWCA across from Central...anybody that can confirm these?

Anonymous said...

CVIC is at 211 So 4th St and has been there for a number of years (4 or 5)

Don't know about Lutheran Social Services but the last time I was there, (less than a month ago) they were just down the block from Bonzers on DeMers.

Wll, perhaps CVIC has closed its doors, for lack of interest and lack of any real crimes. Crime is down in GF and all over in ND, False rape and abuse reports are up ! CVIC needs statistics to increase to justify need for grants from city, county, state , and federal sources. Old story for 20 years at CVIC and most other female advocacy groups, folks its a gender war ! greenglass4.

Oh one last item. Conflict of interest story on WDAZ tonight at 10 pm by Lacey Crisp, concerning KNOX Mac Talk and Mr Mac on the City Council. Rumor of another recall in Ward 2 ? Fred Wittman and Barry May did interview on WDAZ. Problem: Mr Mac excluding people from debate, ie: hanging up on callers that differ in views from his ! This is not debate ! This is a bully ! Mr Mac says in interview " I want to hear all sides of story or issue ". That is a bunch of crap and everbody knows it. See where debate goes from now on. greenglass4.

That's right, she was asking for it. The American Taliban is alive an well in GF.

Anonymous said...

I think CVIC will be around for awhile.

The guys that break their wive's jaw will make sure of that.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm...sounds like the "anything for the south end" crowd has a problem with a real effective Ward 2 councilman.

You go Mac!

greenglass4...what's the web address of your blog/website?

I'd like to check it out.

Thanks in advance.

- Other downtown stuff. Brownstones set to open. How's business at the Crosstown Lounge?

I was there Saturday. It was alright. The bartender was great, one of the waitresses was a bit snotty, another was really nice. There were three pool tables out of order and one of the stalls in the two stall women's bathroom had a broken handle.

i love campbells.....best burger in town, plus you can get a-1 on it....yayyyy
