Canad Inn pics

Canad Inns has been regularly posting pictures of their Grand Forks construction project on their website...take a look.

The main hotel tower has now reached its full height of thirteen stories. Sometimes when they build tall buildings, the workers put a flag on the tallest point. Maybe they should put an American and Canadian flag on this tower? It would be kind of cool and I'm sure the Manitobans coming south on I-29 would like that...put 'em in a spending mood!

The new hotel looks great, and I can't wait to stay there sometime.

I agree with JGS, I wish there would be more tall buildings in Grand Forks. Maybe someone can put up a couple high-rises near UND for student's or low-income apartments.

I want to see the countryside from a top floor room- anyone hear what a room up there would cost for a night?

An eating joint or viewing deck would be neat for the top floor.

I wonder if the fire dep't. has a ladder truck high enough for the Canad Inn

It's going to be absolutely awesome when this place opens. Vanilla pudding will flow from all cold water spickets in town, and chocolate will flow from the hot. This is just one of the many, many magical things that will happen. In fact, the Alerus Commission members will also begin regrowing hair. Thank you Grand Forks City Council.

I've never been quite sure what is going to be on the top floor. I know that it will be a "penthouse" style so I'm assuming there will lots and lots of windows. It would be cool if there was a cocktail bar or something up there, but I'm thinking it will just be some nicer rooms...maybe some suites?

I suppose they have one tall enough to reach the top of the state mill (which I think is technically still taller than the Canad Inn, right?).

Would be awesome to see more of these type of tall buildings develop in the downtown district.

I really wish we had a taller building (or two) downtown! As it is, our downtown skyline is really nothing to write home about...

Our downtown skyline.........I don't think there's a building over six stories is there? I agree, Grand Forks could use a couple of highrise buildings, especially in the downtown area. I was hoping that the new apt/condos going up downtown would have been in the form of a highrise apt building. Quite a while back, when the planning of downtown apts was being explored, I had e-mailed my city councilman with my thoughts, he e-mailed me back thanking me for my e-mail but never did actually address it. Anyways, yes, Grand Forks could definately use a couple of highrises, this town is full of 2, 3 and 4 story brick buildings. It would be nice for Grand Forks to start looking like our peer cities.

I've heard that the top floor will be home to a Martini Bar, but can't confirm that.

I don't think the FD has a ladder truck long enough to reach the 6th floor of the new county office building, or they didn't when it was firs built.

So I guess this means the Canad Inn tower is pretty much screwed in case of fire? I wonder what kind of a bearing this has on Canad's insurance...really high premiums?

I used to hear that too, but I haven't heard anything pertaining to that as of late.

I have also heard that the top floor will have the nicest rooms in the hotel and will be used be the "stars" playing at the Alerus. As it is, most stars who choose to stay in GF before or after their concert lodge at the Hilton.

When Cher came (pre-Hilton), they literally remodeled and expanded a room at the Holiday Inn for her. It was a little sad...Cher having to stay at the local Holiday Inn. Thank God for the Hilton and thank God even more for the Canad Inn.

Martini Bar concept
+ Grand Forks market
= Failure

D'oh. I'd imagine they'll have an extensive sprinkler system as most high-rises beyond the reach of ladders are required to have.

Martini Bar concept
+ Grand Forks market
= Failure

I stated that formula months ago right after The Toasted Frog opened, and was met with an argument to the contrary, backed with the defense of how "they have the best mojitos in town," which has provided an endless source of amusement in my house.

The Frog was jam packed the first 2 times we went there right after it opened (with a group that chose the place), but we were there just this past Friday at 6 pm, prime time for the after work martini crowd. We found the place about 1/3 full, 2 people at the bar, and nowhere near the standing room only crowd that we saw at the same time a few months back.

The martini bar concept has come and gone in much more exciting places like DC and NYC. I don't see how it will last here in GF.

My main problem with the TF, and another part of teh equation, is the menu. They seem to be missing a whole level of food...the $12-$16 range, which would allow them to offer something nicer than pizza and less expensive than the steak. They have appetizers, which could be doubled up for a meal, or dinners in the $18-$22 range, and not much in between. And the food, while certainly head and shoulders above places like Applebee's and Boston's, is still not quite there. I think they need a bit more inspiration to pull off the whole "hip downtown" thing.

I agre that calling something a "martini bar" is the kiss of death, but a happy hour bar/late-night lounge that promises views of the city and beyond could be successful in GF. Especially when combined with business from the hotel itself.

I'd give the Frog boys a pass for now. They're trying to do something unique in a hick market. I support them.

Coffee Guy said...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I fully support them and hope they stay open forever. I just hope that they tweak the menu to encompass something other than a 10 pages of drinks and 2 pages of food.
