Open Thread #80
It's a new week and I'm sure you have plenty to talk about.
Let's start this week with something juicy. Enough of these "sickly-sweet topics". What was the WORST thing you've ever done in Grand Forks? Your one big secret? Let's get a confessional going. In 1987 (before computers) I shoplifted typing cartridges from Target- total value $20 or so.
In 1989 or 1990, some drunken friends and I "borrowed" a car that was idling outside of the old Valley Dairy near campus. We left it in the middle of the old intramural fields, with minor fender damage, and vomit in the backseat. I apologize to the owner of that 1985 Renault.
1. There are too many cops in Grand Forks. Every street, every other car... police.
2. The early-morning construction noises at the new Country Inn & Suites motel is going to lead me to suicide.
3. Motorcycles and their noise pollution is ridiculous. That is one good thing about winter... no annoying as hell motorcyles driving by and shaking my whole house.

Add that to the sound of trains here in Downtown Fargo. Ugh...nightmare.
Although the "quiet zone" is in effect now, there are still some times when the trains sound their horns. It gets really old, really fast.
The added bonus is the sound of people screaming during Friday and Saturday nights from midnight to 4am. I'm usually not up that late, but when I am I can hear it from blocks away. I just want to stop these people sometimes and say "hey...I know you're drunk. But does everyone within three blocks of you need to know it as well?"
They would probably just want a high-five...
I guess that's the price you pay living Downtown.
Speaking of which, I finally visited Downtown GF this weekend, although during the day. It looks great - kind of made me think that those with some $$ or power are actually reading what we've been writing for years.
More downtown housing. Alot more, and alot better. Then you have a base of customers to support local businesses. Seems like it's finally happening, and it looks really good. Two thumbs up!
I hate the freakin idiot college kids who come home every night at 2am, after the bars close and feel the need to yell, scream, and otherwise act like douchebags in the parking lot outside my apartment.
I dont remember being that annoying and inconsiderate when I was an undergrad
During summer I sleep with my window open, I really hate those birds that sing in the morning by my window, way to early. I plan on killing those birds this summer.

I (one time) "broke into" Memorial Stadium during the early morning to run across the field that the Fighting Sioux played on.
I say "broke into" loosely because the gates at the south entrance are locked with a chain, and there is enough room to squeeze between the gates.
I ran up and down the field, as if I was catching passes from Danny Freund.
It was awesome, and I probably would've went to jail if I had been caught...but I didn't destroy any property and did it purely for the fun of it. Even if it was kind of weird pretending you were a Sioux football player when you're the same age as most of them.
The funniest part came later when I bought a quart (or "skinny carton", whichever) of milk from Mini Mart on 42nd St that same morning, and took a giant gulp.
It had the consistency of cottage cheese, and I almost (but didn't) throw up all over the place.
Never got sick, but was reaally close. I can't help but laugh about it now...so damn stupid.
The running of the field was great though - I will never forget it.
Many years ago, perhaps close to 30 years ago I was in my shiny new compact car, stopped at a stop sign in EGF. I was rear ended, not bad, but put a nice dent in my rear end right below the tail light. The guy gave me his insurance info, he looked to be somewhat drunk too. He was elderly. The next day I went to the agency and they told me he had not paid his insurance for a year. The guy had given me his address, it was in an apartment building (long torn down after the flood), I went there and beat the hell out of his door. An elderly lady across the hall opened her door and told me that he was "real hard to wake up in the morning". I continued to beat on the door until finally the deadbolt unlocked and the door opened about an inch. I stood there for a bit and finally walked in to find the guy lying in filth on a hide-a-bed. I told him he needed to pay for the damage he did to my car, and he said that he didn't know what I was talking about, along with a few other choice words, and passed out. I pulled his wallet out of his pants and took the $50 that was in it and left. This whole ordeal still pisses me off, nice to get it off my chest.
BTW, I have run on the Mem. Stadium field too. You can still squeeze between the so. gates. :-)
I have a confession, my brother is an upper mangagement guy with the Olive Garden, I had him persuade his other guys to not build the restaurant in GF.
Matthew, I'd love to start a Minot blog, but I won't be living in Minot proper. Instead, I'll be living and working in a town that is Minot's equivalent to Larimore. I just won't be getting the good scoops that GFG gets if I live 25 miles outside the city. :)
I have a question for you all... I'm going camping in a couple weeks, and I was looking to purchase some Dry Ice for my cooler. Is there any place locally i can purchase some in the GF area? Back home they sell it in the freezer at Pavillion, but i can't find any around town.
