Open Thread #79
Here's a new open thread for the weekend, kids.
Have fun at Springfest if you go...but leave the fiery couches at home, please.
I asked before but got no response: Does anyone know what that dark stuff is on the trees lining the streets? (I think the trees are flowering crab but I'm guessing.) Anyway, the stuff is along the outer branches and looks like, well, you know what it looks like.
Some people I've talked to suspect they're leftover egg cases from the Great Crawly Infestation of a couple of years ago, but that doesn't seem right.
Any ideas? It looks absolutely gross when there aren't any leaves, which is most of the year.
The stuff on the trees is known as black knot. It's a fungal infection that hits several types of trees. It's hit our chokecherry bushes pretty hard. There is no cure other than to cut out the effected branches. We have one flowering crab, and the thing looks so awful, I plan to cut it down this spring.
So this black knot stuff spreads? As much of it as there is, wouldn't you think the city should be clipping it off the trees on the berm? I'd do it myself but I'd have to get a ladder and a clipper.
Springfest is NOTHING compared to 4 years ago...every year it gets worse (or better depending on your perspective). I remember it was where ALL my friends and their friends were when I came here in 2004, now maybe a quarter of them are stopping by the park just to check it out and then continue the festivities somewhere else. Replacing BYOB with shelling cash out to suite 49 really killed it.
Here's a big "F-U" to the few that ruined it for all of us in the previous years...
I hope you guys realize it was the behavior of those few that recked it for everyone else. Don't blame the city, the police, Suite 49, etc for the canges. Only those fire-starting, couch burning jerks. That being said, it looked like a pretty fun time this year. The beer lines moved quickly and thre was good music and weather to be had by all!

I didn't think Springfest was all that bad. I was only there for an hour and a half, but the weather was nice, the crowd was behaving (for the most part), and the music was great. A BIG improvement from last year - when the weather was cool and rainy.
Id-5 played. Man thats a great band! I dont remember much after 3pm, but it was a pretty good time. Met lots of people I'll never meet again. Good times.
I thikn that students should be able to bring in there own beverages instead of forking out all that money. Maybe there wont be many loud partys, or minors there,. I say have wristbands if u want to drink in teh fenced off area with all the security too. I truly miss the days where it was unorganized and we threw picnic tables in a fire.
You could TRY Gateway Auto Tech, I know they specialize in some imports, but you may have to take it down to Valley Imports in Fargo, depending on what you need done.
Your definitely going to have to take your Audi to Valley Imports. I would not let anyone in GF touch that thing. Im also hesitant about Valley Imports, but its the closest thing to an import shop around.
I have started to notice quite a few Audis in town, as well as a few BMW's and Mercedes. Maybe someone will open up a shop for you people.

The two buildings being built are two separate car dealerships. One is the Toyota/Scion dealer and one is the Chrysler/Jeep dealer. Toyota is mandating that in order to keep franchises, they demand a building to their own brand. NOT a body shop...have you looked at the size of the thing?
Spring garden planting doesn't often start until about 2-3 week in May, sometimes even close to Memorial Day. But once in the ground that black dirt helps them take off!

dude I work at the NWS...guess that is a bit revealing about my identity...I'm not a forecaster or even a weather person...guess that narrows the field even more...this weather is just insane! I commend ya'll yanks with the upmost respect...how anyone could live here...and actually thrive here... is beyond me...I amazed every day at how many really nice people live here..and LOVE it! What am I missing? I arrived here on Jan 11th, 2007 and its been winter ever since...
I gotta say...I went to The Kegs drive-in today for the first time and I loved it! The sloppy joes really are the greatest thing ever. We showed up a little after noon and it was packed. I have to go back to try a lime coke or malt sometime soon.
The individuals responsible for the graffiti tick the heck out of me. I noticed that they have also returned to the bike path under the Demer's overpass "doodling" on both the pillars and the lamps along the path. If you're going to vandalize crap, at least make it a cool mural. This is some piss-poor graffiti. Losers.
This is the internet, and the beauty (or curse) is that college students can go home for the summer, stay in town, or go to Amsterdam, and still post idiotic comments here.
Hey Lynsey, Jerry is the dude that volunteers at the North Dakota Museum of Art. He's upper middle-aged and seems to know pretty much everyone of any status in this town. He throws a party four times a year for the solstices and equinoxes. His parties usually consist of an eclectic group of affluent people, ranging from international students, to artists, to business men and women, to the mayor and his wife. There is plenty of wine and top-shelf liquor to go around and keep everybody socially lubricated.
I see that the headline on Carlos Gomez hitting for the cycle called him "Go-Go". This allusion to the old Dick Tracy cartoon character is certainly hostile and abusive; a clear sign of racial stereotyping. I expect a letter to the editor from the UND Anthropology Dept decrying this blatant insensitivity.
Tabula was renting the space from Christus Rex, who opted to open their own shop and not renew Tabula's lease. It happens. I think Kelly Thompson's facebook statement about religion versus integrety was uncalled for. Apparently if you're religous you shouldn't want to own your own coffee shop.
My complaint is that at Tabula, if I ordered a latte or cappucino drink, it didn't taste any different than if I'd ordered a regular cup of joe. I want to taste mocha and peppermint if I order a peppermint mocha! It was good coffee, but anything beyond simple coffee seemed to come up lacking.
I am responding to a question about work on Import cars in Grand Forks and I would highly recommend Gateway Auto tech I dont know what the person was saying by there is no on in Grand Forks to work on cars I have had my cars worked on there and they are very honest, I have gone in there before and asked them what they thought was wrong with the car and they told me without charging me, also Golden rule is a awesome place to buy a car they go through them before they sell them and are again very honest about the cars!

GF (EGF technically) had a strip club in I believe the 70's/maybe 80's - but we have WAY too mnay conservatives to ever be able to open one again.

Grand Forks had a strip club until around the mid-80's.
ReplyDeleteIt was the Club 81 in the north part of the city, just north of were TSC used to be. Now it's a storage lot.
It burned down and the owner didn't want to rebuild and wanted too much money for the property/liquor license and such.
what are the hours for the Kegs? Are they open for lunch?

ReplyDeleteMy complaint is that at Tabula, if I ordered a latte or cappucino drink, it didn't taste any different than if I'd ordered a regular cup of joe. I want to taste mocha and peppermint if I order a peppermint mocha! It was good coffee, but anything beyond simple coffee seemed to come up lacking.
