1. Marilyn Hagerty should retire.

Her work barely qualifies as journalism, and is making a mockery of the Herald.

Even in the past few weeks you can see her work getting worse and worse. The eatbeat story covering KFC was the pinnacle of bad journalism (even for a restaurant reporter - who, oddly enough, has never given a bad review to a restaurant).

Just check out today's headline from her column:

"Head Start prepares kids for kindergarten".

Tell us something that we didn't already know...

"Ice is water in solid form".

2. We need a "Sensational Suppers" or "Super suppers" in Grand Forks. I wish I had the money to open one. They are a hit everywhere.

5. From the last open thread:

I want to know about the wifi, too :P

rhee said...

Yay for support of the bus system, and ditto the great bus drivers. There are a couple that seem to always be grumpy, but the friendly ones make up for it. A lot of mentally-handicapped people use the city bus, and that puts people off -- Isn't that shameful? Someone wrote an article in UND's Dakota Student paper about how other people on the bus were creepy... Way to go, discriminating and ignorant UND student.

Does anyone know if Denny's has wifi yet?

6. I don't mind the folksy Mariyln columns too much, but it does bother me when she makes up questions and pretend they are from readers.

7. I'm not allowed to comment on other people who write for the DS, but I will give these two links so people can decide for themselves whether or not rhee's comments were correct:

Oh, the people you meet on the bus

8. Forget Olive Garden, Johnny Carino's is the place to go for Italian. I have had Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, and Carino's and I have to say Carino's is the best out of all of them. We have O.G. and Carino's in Sioux Falls, not even a contest to which one I'd rather go to, only thing I don't like about Carino's is salad is not served with your meal, it is an add-on. :(

ReplyDelete
9. Just curious...do we have any open threads over the past 6 months that haven't discussed Olive Garden? :-)

ReplyDelete
10. Deja vu? Or did I just read the same 15 entries on the last open thread...and the one before that.

I hope the reason is that this blog is getting a lot of new readers and posters. I'd hate to think of the alternative.

ReplyDelete
11. Give it up, Justin. The word is out about Carino's---just another of the same ol', same ol'.

Buca's would be the place to satisfy everyone that continues to work over the Italian food in here; unfortunately...it ain't gonna happen.

14. Hey, I actually tried to open to a new direction this morning but guess it didn't work or I was blocked???
Anyway, my question was......has any one heard anything about the new wine club? I heard they were supposed to be starting on Tuesdays with ??? $30 yearly membership and to be meet at L'Bistro's....has anyone else heard of this or have any info to share? I'd love to get involved tho kind of unsure of just jumping out there by myself and not really knowing if it's really open to public or what...I love 'good' wine and think it sounds fun but would love more info or even some one who'd be willing to check it out with---thanks!

15. Heres a new topic, what is UP wiht all the complete HOEBAGS that have been going out to the bars these past few months. I will be 26 next month. When I turned 21 I did NOT act like a skank at all. Yet all these newbies to the bar seem to take home a new guy everytime i see them, or grab MY guy and try to hoebag em.
Cant we just have a classy time? GEEEEEEEZ!

ReplyDelete
16. re: bethski

at what age are you implying that you acted like a skank and thus is the appropriate age to act in that manner?

the problem as i see it is that you're going to the wrong bars. if you frequent gilly's, joe black's, downunder, other 'ho bag' hangouts, then 1) you're probably a ho bag yourself, getting jealous about the prettier ho bags and 2) you really aren't allowed to complain. if you're 26 and looking for class, head to level 10, sanders, toasted frog.

i otherwise agree with you. slutty girls throwing themselves at guys is really not the thing i want to encounter when i go out. and you're right, for some reason, girls celebrating their 21st seem to think it's okay to get drunk and obscene.

in other news... i was dragged into gilly's last week thursday and saw a dark haired girl in short gray shorts and heels. she walked in, danced a while, then she left her friend saying she was going back to level 10 because gilly's was 'gross' (can you tell i'm in love?) anyway i guess my point is that it's sad when a person has to go to a place like gilly's just to dance. or... maybe it's sad that a person likes the music gilly's plays. :P

get me out of this college town...

20. I know everyone wants GOOD italian food in Grand Forks. Try out Giuseppe's...it's right next to Bonzers. It's definitely a place you need to have time to enjoy your meal, but that's because everything is made on the spot and home made fresh. It's not too pricey, either. mmm....

ReplyDelete
21. Ooh, and to clarify: Mama Maria's ORIGINAL owner, Vinny Miranda, is the cook at Giuseppe's (which his son owns). Way better than mama's...MMM again.

ReplyDelete

25. The Dakota Student is garbage, I only pick it up for the crime notes, which don't ever seem to be in there whenever I grab one. The editorials are never compelling, and every girl's article seems to complain about boy troubles.

ReplyDelete
26. Sure the Dakota Student has some horribly bad editorials every now and then, and this is probably my very favorite (it took him a while to admit his Republican values might have been dead-wrong)-

http://media.www.dakotastudent.com/media/storage/paper970/news/2005/09/29/Sectionsopinion/A.Time.For.Patriotism.Not.Protest-1770302.shtml

For a campus that really doesn't have anything for a protest scene or any large scale student involvement (other than the "fraternal" drinking clubs), the DS does a decent job of educating the students about issues affecting them like administrative hiring, where student money gets spent and so on. Now if some students actually gave a damn...

ReplyDelete
27. ^ You have no idea. I've been here for a little over 2 years now and, granted that I'm a grad student, it's really disappointing how little most students care about anything at all. We've had moderate success with Campus Dakota, and Voice UND seems to be doing okay, at least for the semester, but getting any real reaction out of students that takes more than whining on Facebook is difficult.

Even the graduate student association got together last Spring, had a meeting to elect officers, had big plans, and then nothing ever happened. It's alarming when students won't even take steps to save their owen asses when it come to rising tuition, unnecessary movements to DI, eternal parking issues.

From my perspective, there is a general lack of enthusiasm for being involved in anything at all besides the party scene. Some good things happen (Relay for Life, various other charity events, the occasional uprising led by a student body presidential candidate on the make), but mostly it's just been depressing. Maybe it's the eternal self-defeating nature of North Dakotans shining through?

Most students seem to treat their education as a job, where 90% of the work is showing up, and in the end you get a shiny new diploma. I think it's this outlook that makes them not care a whit about what happens on campus. Nobody even runs for student body president for the hell of it, so we're stuck with three 'ticket' candidates at a school of 12,000 students. Seriously people!

That's the end of my rant for today. Carry on.

29. Wine Club: L'Bistro started one that is Tuesday nights from 4:30 to 7:00 (I think). The cost to join is $30 and you get a $20 l'bistro gift certificate from that. Every Tues you get a sample of one red and one white and a glass of your favorite. Apps are available.
Level 10 also has a Wine Club on Wednesdays (Wino Wednesday). For $20.00 you join their club for the year and every Wed you get a free flight of wine (3 samples) and get a glass of your favorite at 1/2 price. They don't open until 6:30 or 7pm tho.
They are both open to the public!!!

32. speaking of work that barely qualifies as journalism, does anyone else think that the herald should have hired someone for arts and entertainment that actually knows something about art?

There is actually a lot of culture in grand forks, and I find it embarrassing that the arts editor admits in her professional blog entry that she knows nothing about classical music. One would think if that was your job, you would take the time to educate yourself.

34. I remember reading a review of the Brad Paisley concert and the reviewer was complaining about how loud it was and that Brad played his guitar too much.

First, it's a concert. It's gonna be loud. It's not a symphony at the Fritz. IT'S GOTTA BE LOUD.

Second, Brad Paisley is a great guitarist and is known in the musician circle as a great guitarist, therefore, HE'S GONNA PLAY HIS GUITAR.

37. I quit reading that part of the Herald after the rock-n-roll version of Britney Spears (no real artistic contribution, songs written for radio, pitch correction used in the studio and live...) got rave reviews for their stop in GF...

God I hate Nickelback, and I don't know any other musicians that actually like them...I'm sorry if they're in your car's CD player at the moment :-)

ReplyDelete
38. grandforks guy, what are your thoughts about paulette tobin? i recall you disliking her cirque "review".

It is one thing to report dates, times, and locations of performances. It is an entirely different matter when an arts "reporter" decides to become a "critic". To me, a critic actually has a working knowledge of whatever they are criticizing. But it seems to me that a lot of the gf community finds her critiques a bit ridiculous.

39. I ate at Giuseppe's with my husband and my parents a week after it had opened. I don't recall everything on the menu, but I think most entrees ranged between $8 - $19 and came with salad and bread. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and we would go there again.

They should have their beer and wine licence in a couple of weeks and we are looking forward to going back and enjoying a glass of wine with our meal.

I appreciated the fact that our waitress was attentive and was sincerely interested in our feedback on everything from the new sauce they served the gnocchi with to the lighting.

Teh Moose's bountiful bevy of bodacious beauties certainly beats out any bar that I been to in the GF area by such a large margin that I can't even hazard a second place contender.

What say ye all? Personally, I am in love with the Blue Moose Crew!

46. Topless Waitresss at Giuseppes ? How about Hooter Girls at "The Moon", Brad said ok. Marilyn H and the paper napkins and as the GFlife turn, comments too funny. Any comments about the movie "Juno" friend and I seen it again on Monday night. greenglass4.

ReplyDelete
49. Kind of like how you are Best Friends Forever with spelling?

Also, you should fix your own punctuation before criticizing anyone else's. You missed a comma after, ironically, punctuation.

ReplyDelete
50. Uh uh. Brush up on your grammar, 4:31.

No punctuation is required after the last of items in a series.

Originally, yes, it was always correct to do so, but the rules were relaxed over the years and it's now acceptable to leave the final comma out.

Sort of like "email" is now acceptable, where originally it was "e-mail."

Now...if we could just get GFG and a few others to quit using that damned "anyways"! :o)

ReplyDelete
51. what kinda closet geeks would rather demean each other about their infantile efforts at punctuation than hoot and holler about which local spot has the most gorgeous babes?!?!?!

postively shameful.

ReplyDelete
52. Ah! But the beauty of it all: this is an informative blog!

We can always learn something by checking it out. Some things useful, some things, not.

ReplyDelete
53. While we're on the topic, most of the complaints about writing style whine about improper "grammer." Get it right: it's spelled "grammar." By the way, notice how I placed the periods inside the quotation marks, thereby displaying proper punctuation!

ReplyDelete
54. Having perused Marilyn H's latest bit on the Pita Pt, I've come to the conclusion that her pieces are not to be read as revues, but rather as free advertising for the eateries of GF. Much like Holmes receives every Friday on the radio,

ReplyDelete
55. *sigh*

So much for hopes of correct spelling and punctuation.

That last post was a classic example of, well, laziness, ec99!

ReplyDelete
56. Ok, I'll grant I used the wrong "review." At least I spelled "receives" correctly.
"Pt" was a typo.

ReplyDelete
57. I can't wait until Marilyn Hagerty reviews the food offerings of various local gas stations. I'm dying to know which gas station offers the best Deli Express sandwiches. Or even the best cheese filled hotdogs.

ReplyDelete
58. I would like to see MH review the frozen burrito options available at local grocery stores.

Where in downtown is Guiseppe's located?

And just because no post is complete without this: Olive Garden :)

ReplyDelete
59. I think the DS ran a mock Marilyn review of "Ravine Creamery's" selections in the spoof issue last year...However, the spoof edition doesn't make it online, so I don't have a link to it.

ReplyDelete
60. Oh my...I just read today's review.

The fact that the owner's parents live in Leeds, ND has as much bearing on how much I'll enjoy the food as knowing Marilyn parked between two red trucks when she went to KFC.

ReplyDelete
61. Who kares about gramer and punktuation in an onlone blog? This isn't an essay on a college application it is peoples thoughts. I think that is more important than whether or not you won the spelling bee in 3rd grade...

By the way, what about the waitresses at Tavern United (CanadInn)? I know those plaid skirts always add to the enjoyment of my English pub fare, such as bangers and mash.

I think you made my point.

Anyway, the distinction you mentioned was made way back when I was in grade school, some twenty-five years ago, and probably before. I am well aware of the ebb and flow of 'acceptable' grammar, but I don't let that color my understanding of the 'rules'.

I think this is ok:
"Mr. Akavez owns a house"

I think this is ok:
"The Akavezes went on vacation last summer"

I'm not sure here:
"The Akavezes's dog stayed at home"
or is it
"The Akavezes' dog stayed at home"

Anyone know the possessive form?

This is not some sort of a test or anything, I'm really not sure

68. According to the grammar guide (I'm a geek) on my desk (Write Right! by Jan Venolia), the original best practice was to always put a 's at the end of all possessive words. The modern approach is to leave of the s after the apostrophe.

It depends on whether you want it to look pretty on paper of be easy to pronounce. One would always say "The Akavezes's dog" (pronouncing each s) whether that s is there or not, but in my opinion, "Akavezes'" looks nicer.

ReplyDelete
69. Bzzt. Thanks for playing. The possessive form of Akavez is Akavez's. The plural form of Akavez is Akavezes.

Ne'er the twain shall meet. I would consider that combination to be redundant, and would use Akavez's to refer to the Akavez family's dog.

It becomes more clear if you approach it this way...

The Akavez family's dog

OR

The Akavez families's dog.

Make sense? Actually, looking at it that way, it's not even redundant, it's just incorrect.

ReplyDelete
70. Whether or not you are a fan of correct grammar or not, certainly you'll have to admit that this discussion is at least one level above the tripe that has appeared on this blog the last couple of months.

I mean that respectfully, too.

BTW: thank's for the lesson on possessives. :o)

ReplyDelete
71. Question for "Bzzt"

So I am with you that the possessive of Akavez is Akavez's; thus: Mr. Akavez's dog.

But when we talk about the whole Akavez family (wife and 2 kids) it's the Akavezes, right? So far I think we are in agreement.

So if we want to refer to something possessed by the Akavez family, couldn't we say
Akavezes'
or
Akavezes's
--one just being the old-fashioned way

I'm with you that it is easier to say the "Akavez family's dog." But what about the possessive form of Akavezes? You say that the they never meet -but don't plurals possess?
I agree we can avoid the problem by adding the word family, but must I add the word?

Thanks, for the post and especially the citation Matthew. I consulted my Elements of Style (by Strunk and White) to no avail.

My official Yogi Berra Quote of the Day:
"It's never happened in the World Series history - and it hasn't happened since."
--Love it!

Oh, and being able to consult the local blog for grammar advice (and argument) -- priceless! Thanks!

ReplyDelete
72. Woops, my mistake--I was reading the bottom half of the post when I was typing my response. I thought the original poster was saying that the name of the family was Akavezes, not Akavez.

You are perfectly right in your analysis for the plural of Akavez, I just lose points for not reading carefully!

Anon8:36, you're welcome. My source tells me that Strunk and White would follow the "classical" style (apostrophe s) in case you are wondering.

ReplyDelete
73. Okay, talk to me about the proper use of the word "that". I must use it often when I speak, beacuse when I write, I frequently end up editing a few out. Take Matthew's post above, to me, every sentence has an example where the word could be deleted, or added, and it would read alright.

Must be that it's one of those words that is flexible like that, and that that's just the way that it is. ;-)

ReplyDelete
74. Barack Obama will make a great president.

ReplyDelete
75. No, he should be Miss Congeniality.

ReplyDelete
76. Here's what Strunk and White have to say:

That. Which.

'That' is the defining, or restrictive pronoun, 'which' the nondefining, or nonrestrictive.

Examples:
The lawn mower that is broken is in the garage. (Tells which one)

The lawn mower, which is broken, is in the garage. (Adds a fact about the only mower in question)

The use of 'which' for 'that' is common in written and spoken language ("Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass."). Occasionally, 'which' seems preferable to 'that', as in the sentence from the Bible. But it would be a convenience to all if these two pronouns were used with precision. Careful writers, watchful for small conveniences, go 'which'-hunting, removed the defining 'whiches', and by doing so improve their work.

The Elements of Style (illustrated) at 87-88, Strunk & White, (3d Ed.)

ReplyDelete
77. I would add that the use of 'that' is more of an Art vs. Science situation. Technically, using 'that' clarifies (or makes overly precise), that a clause is on the way. 'That' can be inferred, and is understood in parsing the meaning of the sentence.

Where the Art comes in, is in deciding to value economy over clarity, and removing some of the unnecessary articles dressing up your prose.

To use 'that' or not is often not a question of correctness, but of intention.

ReplyDelete
78. Notice in the above reply you can remove 'that' from the first paragraph and it still reads clearly.

As well, you can add 'that' (using 'that are' or 'that dress') to the second paragraph, and the meaning is equal and clear.

ReplyDelete
79. Regarding the question of using Akavezes's, Akavezes', or Akavez family's, the answer is any of the above.

The "rules" say that any of the above is correct. Stylistically, Akavezes' would be preferred, I suppose because it's precise while being compact.

And yes, Virginia, there are plural possessives!

ReplyDelete
80. Alright, onto the next topic: use of the semicolon.

yale researchers have found that some female duck genitalia is evolving, forming clockwise spirals, to avoid impregnation from undesirable yet aggressive males.

The study builds upon a finding by Yale in 2007 that first noted how duck's sexual organs had been morphing. While most birds are phallus-free, ducks are oddly endowed--up to 8 inches. Using high-speed video they found that ducks could go from zero to happy in less than half a second.

That endowment should give the males an advantage during forced mating but these Viagra free males aren't out of the woods yet.

Want to know what duck endowment looks like? Check out this video over at Boing Boing. There is something very Bloodhoud Gang about all of this.

"In species where forced copulation is common, males have evolved longer penises, but females have coevolved convoluted vaginas with dead-end cul-de-sacs and spirals in the opposite direction of the male penis," said Patricia L.R. Brennan, a researcher in the Yale Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Yale researchers tested the theory by examining duck penis eversion in a series of glass tubes. As expected, a straight tube or one that has counter-clockwise spiraling doesn't slow down the process. The tubes that mimicked the clockwise spiral completely halted the eversion.

"This coevolution results from conflict between the sexes over who is going to control fertilization," Brennan added.

"Although we predict that sexual conflict should be ubiquitous, finding a system where the 'arms race' between the sexes is so dramatic is exceedingly rare. Ducks are providing us with an incredible opportunity to understand the evolutionary consequences of conflict," said Brennan.

Why Yale decided to study duck penises in the first place I will never know.
