Well, I don't subscribe to some of the "chiropractic cures everything" thought processes out there, but, having had chronic back pain, due to an injury, since I was about 20, I can tell you that "evidence based medicine" did me no good whatsoever (aside from "here's some pills" once in a while.) I have, however, found significant relief for my back pain through chiropractic.
I see Dr. King, who is on South Washington. He's a traditional sort, but I've literally crawled in there with a muscle spasm and walked out feeling fine twenty minutes later. He's also the sort to do what needs to be done and tell you to watch it and come back if you need to -- not the "you'll need weekly appointments for life" approach.
It just occurs to me that I'm about the most contrary person on this blog... seems I argue with just about everyone. Sorry :-)
with all of these new businesses coming in, i have to wonder... can grand forks actually support all of them? this town business sector has exploded in the past 10 years, but i have to wonder if the patronage is keeping up with it. are there enough people to actually KEEP these businesses here?
Sorry, i can't recommend a chiropractor by name, but i can recomment the science in general. After many months of physical therapy from a sports injury, i decided to go to chiro as a 'last resort'. It shoud have been my first. Most traditional doctors are skeptical of non-traditional methods-whether it's nutrition, herbology or, in this case, chiropracty.
Has anyone else eaten at Mamma Maria's lately? What happened? We were there last Friday night and not a single customer in the place was happy. Some walked out because the food was taking so long, others (like us) said it was inedible and asked for a refund. Did they get new owners or something? If this keeps up I'm afraid they'll be closed in no time. This was the first time in my life I've found food absolutely inedible at a restaurant. Our pastas tasted like rotten fish!
I really like Dr. Thomson at Red River Family Chiropractic on Demers. He's very good plus he does not schedule frequent appointments like some chiro's do. He tells me to come in when I feel I need to and he can always get me in on the same day I call.
My coworker ate there on Friday night. She confirmed that they are under new management. I believe that a UND professor bought the place about a month ago. She very much enjoyed it, but it was her first time there, and nothing to compare it to.
I too ate at Mamma Maria's on Friday night. Aside from being busier than I have seen in a while, the food was delicious and did not taste like rotten fish. Nor did I notice anyone leave, complain about the food or ask for a refund. I will eat there again.
Dale, Getting pills for back pain isn't evidence-based. The research actually says giving pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxants for back pain has no effect vs. a placebo. There are good PT's and bad PT's just like everything else.
Dr. Steven Swanson is an excellent dentist, his staff is top notch. His office is right behind Tom & Jerry's liquor store on the corner of N Washington & 2nd Ave.
My husband sees Dr. Shannon Ray in EGF for chiro care, and has nothing but good to say about him. His prices are also pretty reasonable and he takes a lot of different insurance plans.
For a dentist, we see Dr. Brian Parr on South Washington and have for years. My kids like him and actually look forward to going to the dentist. I've also heard great things about Dr. Bridgford and Dr. Mosher (for kids).
Dentists I'd recommend: Dr. O'Connell (across from Art & Learn) or Dr. Tanabe (across from the Hospital)
Good Chiropractor: Dr. Ottinger (on 24th by the Loaf 'n Jug)
If you are having muscle pain I would recommend Northern Lights Massage Therapy. It's not your typical "spa massage" experience...I really do consider it therapy. She will work out knots in your muscles you never even knew you had and you will walk out of there feeling like a million bucks!
On the dental front, I'd recommend Dr. John Baden, on South Washington (strip mall just south of Subway/Little Ceasars/TCBY.) Nice guy, great staff and, when I was looking for my daughter a long time ago, one of the few dentists in town taking new patients.
Looks like the new owners of Mama Maria's are starting a renovation project of the interior. I wonder what other changes will be instore for GF's only real italian eatery.
McDonald on the east side is a great dentist. I've been to Jim (the dad) for years and years and Peter (one of his sons) for a couple of years. Both are great. A second son, Chris (I believe), has started as well.
My kids like Mosher but he's *expensive*. And when I saw him yesterday in the Porsche Carrera I knew why and decided it was time to take the kids to the east side :-).

I have to 4th that. However, do not go to the office between 1 PM and 2 PM because no one will help you. The staff takes its lunch break seriously! Anyway, Steve is great, and his staff of hygenists are great too. Almost look forward to going and getting my teeth cleaned!
Can anyone recommend a dentist that will take people with medicaid with no question and knows how to treat people with disablitys well? too many wonderful dentists in this town hate taking people with medicaid due to they arent paid as well I think. Any suggestions so I can stop driving ALL the way up to cavalier? BTW, Dr. Olson in cavalier is AWESOME. Its just hard sometimes when emergencys come up.

I'd have to agree, if everyone is limited to the subject of seconding, thirding (?) and so forth of their nomination for favorite dentists, things MUST be good in The Valley.

It ain't so. From what I understand, the J. Llyod Stone house (the "old" presidents residence) is going to be moved to a new location to make room for expansion of Gamble Hall. The current president's house (not a historical landmark)is to be torn down. Right now, the Alumni Ass. uses two buildings. The old J. Llyod Stone center, and across the street, the old (can't remember the name) religious center/church. The Alumni Association will build a new building for themselves, and as a part of the new building, the president's residence will be incorporated into it.
Subject to change of course as is just about everything on campus. This was the last I had heard at a meeting I was at for a particular campus dept. I work for that I would like to remain nameless.
The current president's house is a ranch style house built in the 50's...more Brady Bunch than historical landmark. You must have been thinking of the Alumni Center, which won't be torn down.
My house was built in the 50's and it sure doesn't need to be torn down. There is a concept called remodeling and it works for most of us-unless you are a fast food business. College presidents receive free housing-fixing it up should do. Enough waste!
Regarding the problems with the Area Voices blogs...
I believe we're talking about a server problem...not really programming. I use a Dell and I've been having troubles lately accessing all Forum Comm sites including the papers and the blogs. Hopefully the issue has been resolved.

The university built them a subway under Columbia at University. No one uses it. They prefer to cross on the red light when left turners have a green arrow. I guess the all come from towns that don't have stop lights.
Tom Buning, UND Athletic Director, seems to be a coward ! According to Wayne Nelson in Fargo Forum : he does not return phone calls, hiding in his office on Thursday, no show at UND Sioux Boosters Luncheon, no show for Potato Bowl Football game on Sat, no show for UND Hall of Fame induction cermonies Sat (Buning was to speak). As you might know local radio show host is covering for him, and making threats to UND for not giving info. Well call Bruning and ask him why he asked for "leave of absence" sound like AWOL. Away Without Leave ?
Has anyone heard rumors that there is no recycling in Grand Forks? Waste Management throws the "recycling" in with all the other garbage and it goes to the landfill. --Or so the story goes . . . does anyone know if there is any truth to this??
I've heard the "recycling rumor" stated as fact on Martha: Much of what we place in recycling bins never actually gets recycled because it would cost too much to transport it to the proper facilities, and it can often waste more petroleum transporting it than is wasted creating new plastic bottles. I wish I could remember the name of the guy's book because it seemed like an interesting read...Anyway, it's not just happening in GF; it happens everywhere.
Geez, everytime I walked under Columbia at University, I thought I was going to get raped. And it smelled awful. I hated walking under there, but wasn't stupid enough to stand at the light and wait for it.
A male law student was assaulted at 6:30 pm in front of the law school (GFPD can't seem to solve the case, despite having the car's tag #. I understand that the owner of the vehicle "knew nothing about the incident," so the investigation stopped there. Nice work, Officer Fife.)
UND does not have a security department, they have a police department (fully licensed ND officers), so it would definently be the UPD, not GFPD. By the way, UPD doesn't write any parking tickets, as that is a separate entity altogether (UND Traffic Division). The woman who was "mugged" supposedly was mugged on Sept. 7, and reported it on Sept. 18...something fishy there? And coffee guy, you have access to that case file to know that it was filed inactive? You must know that license tag # thing is true? remember, there is more than one side to every story. Maybe you should let some more facts come out before you berate your public safety officials.
According to the official site, the UND Police Department has had setbacks in recent years regarding their status as a 'real' police force: "1997 also was the end of the department's national accreditation period. Because of budget concerns and lack of personnel to work on accreditation the department was unable to apply for re-accreditation. The department hopes to become re-accredited some time in the future when personnel and budget conditions permit it."
In addition, if the traffic division is a separate entity, why does the UND PD get to list "three parking enforcement vehicles" and "several other bicycles for parking enforecement" under its jurisdiction?
I don't know about you, but when they pick up my recycling, they sometimes leave items on the berm that can't be recycled but I've put in the bins. So if they do it curbside, I think they must do it at the center.
I expect that they do the recycling for free because they're making a bit of cash off of the monetarizable stuff like aluminum. Can't imagine that it would be profitable to just haul it all to the dump, but I imagine that there are loads of people who put junk out for the recyclers, and that does need to go off.
But it's probably pretty easy to sort through a bunch of crap on a conveyer belt ("can", "bottle", "rat", "rat", "rat", "bottle") and just leave the "I don't know what that is" stuff to fall off the end into a dumpster. You'd probably pretty easily pick off 95% of the cans, bottles and plastic crap that can be recycled.
Isn't it New York City that requires everything either go in the garbage disposal (foodish things) or into recycling (cans, paper and the lot) and you can't have any "trash" at all (or small amounts)?
Interesting concept...not being allowed to have any "trash" at all. If I think about it, just about everything that I use is recyclable, except maybe the occasional styrofoam cup or meat tray. (Styrofoam can't be recycled, right?)
Everything else is food, paper, cardboard, plastic, or glass. Definitely recyclable. My husband and I recently started recycling most everything that we can, and I was amazed at how much our trash was reduced. We produced only 1 trash bag full of actual trash last week...very proud of ourselves!

So, the case is solved? Please tell us the details. As "public safety officials" how have you taken care of this matter so that we, as the public, are safe?
GF City Cop, I apologize for my sarcastic tone, and I certainly wasn't berating anybody. However, the question remains "What is the state of security on the UND campus?" It certainly sounds like there has been an increase in crime of late.

Yes, I believe Coffee Guy was berating any officer involved in the investigation at UND. By calling any officer involved Barney Fife, they are eluding to the most incompetent example of a police officer that he could come up with. Most officers take extreme pride in their jobs and in their work. I personally don't know anything about this assault, as it was handled by an agency I don't work for. The legal system does not allow for us charging a vehicle owner just because we know a license plate of a person who was involved in the assault. The plate will give us little information other than who owns the car - it doesn't tell anything other than that, and it could be likely the car was stolen, plate given to police was innaccurate, or the suspect is unwilling to cooperate - making it difficult to prove a case. Maybe we should be talking to UND facilitites to have better surveillance of campus.
By the way, the accredidation has nothing to do with UND being a police department, it is more like a feather in the cap of a police department with a certain number of minorities represented and types of training and equipment. The listed vehicles are under an umbrella of the UND safety department, which both the traffic division and police department fall under. The police officers themselves are not responsible to write tickets, those are mostly student employees. By the way, coffee guy - if Barney Fife were the worst thing I were called when I go to work at night I would be happy - so no, I don't really have thin skin...just suprised to hear that on this blog. Good questions, though.
Nothing has the potential to stall downtown's growth like filth. This just reinforces the view of South Siders and others who are reluctant to come downtown and resistant to its development.
I had a nice, lengthy, well-reasoned reply all typed out, clearly explaining the situation from an honest, law-abiding citizen's POV, but have decided to just leave this thread altogether.

I think since you don't work for the UPD you should let them speak for themselves. As you can see by speaking up you have started to dig a hole that is not easily filled. Especially since those whose numbers start with a 3 or 2 or even a 1 may troll through here from time to time...
anon - yeah, I know what you elude to...What I was doing was trying to prevent jumping to conclusions. I don't think many involved with UPD come around here really often, and I also don't think that I am digging many holes. The "3s, 2s, or 1" - in my opinion wouldn't really care that I provided a little info for a discussion. We still have free speech, after all!

Anon, I am not running. I had a post that expounded upon my thoughts quite well, I thought. I just had a few reservations about posting it for the world to see. It's called a rational decision, and one that I don't regret.

I also thought that the letter in the Herald about downtown was a very worthwhile thing for the paper to run. It's very unfortunate to see the way some people treat the downtown area.
I fully realize that it is often the bars who are the only businesses that are actually bringing people downtown at times, but I don't think that this means that the bars or bar patrons have the right to trash downtown every weekend. I often see beer bottles and trash all over the street directly in front of some of the bars downtown. Shame on the owners who can't even bother to pick up the trash that their customers have left right in front of their bar. Perhaps the downtown bar owners would be interested in forming a cleanup group that would clean downtown after busy bars nights? I really doubt that would ever happen though.
When downtown looks dirty and sketchy, that is absolutely going to prevent more growth and redevelopment downtown.
Who do you recommend for eye care in Grand Forks? I'm noticing things are looking a little fuzzier than they did a year ago, and I'm not too fond of the last optimologist I saw. I need someone who is going to provide both a reasonably priced exam as well as reasonably priced contact lenses and eyewear.
I'm happy to hear about the success that the Canad Inn has been having in the last few months. Weren't their some readers of this blog who used to doubt that the Canad was going to be able to make a go of it? The parking lot is usually packed.
I really expect to see that second tower coming up in a couple of years. I still kind of wish that we could have had one 26-story tower instead of two 13-story towers. That would have been pretty sweet.
I'm also glad to see that the Canad finally found the time to plug in the sign at the entrance of the hotel. One of my bizarre obsessions lately is the fact that the Canad hasn't had any lit signs on the building...aren't those maple leaves and the signs for the restaurants going to be illuminated? And what about the water park...no sign for that yet. Odd things bother me.
lynsey - I recommend Opticare in East Grand Forks. Dr. Gander is very good and you can talk politics with him while getting your eyes checked!
On the subject of downtown cleanliness - hear, hear to the individual who wrote to the Herald. I do the Farmers Market every Saturday morning and have woken up homeless, cleaned up enough vomit and beer bottles to feel sick myself and last Saturday mopped up urine on the stage. AND the Farmers Market pays the city for the privilege of holding the market on their property. Something needs to change...
FYI GF City Cop: "they are eluding" "I know what you elude to..." Sorry, it was bugging me; The word you were looking for was allude. If they were eluding to you, you'd have lost them.

I can't condone those whose limited imaginations can't allow them to pass up an opportunity to toss a can or smash a bottle, as if the experience sustains their state of virility. The only reasonable excuse for doing such a thing is if you're underage and you don't want to get caught with an open container when there's a police officer coming your way. Of course, if they're not quick enough, they'll get caught for littering and open container, and minor in consumption if their luck has really run out.
For eye care in Grand Forks, I highly recommend Lifetime Vision Center out by the mall... I have gone to Dr. Yunker for years and Dr. Torkelson is good too... They have a great facility with top of the line eqipment and eyewear. Always quick, easy and personable.
2 things : all of the crap and garbage downtown may be left by the Wine and Art Crowd ! AD Buning receives poor grades ! On a scale of 1 to 7 he received a 2.7 from head coaches. Plus he needs to cut out the embarassing pushups !45 question survey results in todays Fargo Forum. Phil Harmeson says "scan of what's going on" with UND and Buning.
I also think Opticare in East Grand Forks is great. I've gone there for a couple years and they've always treated me well. Last time I was there to pick out new glasses the people who helped me were great & I felt gave me an honest opinion about what looked good and what didn't. They also called me a couple weeks after I got me new glasses just to make sure they were working out.
I went to Level 10 Martini Bar downtown this evening after hearing about its grand opening last week.
Kinda lame.
I think I was more pissed that I heard there was a dress code there and that they turned away people who wore jeans (even though, I disagree with that depending on the jeans). So, when I saw people walking in like they lived in the Mission, I was ready to go.
The dress code there is similar to Subway.
I'm thinking they didn't do great last week because of turning away people that they said "screw it" and Gilly let whoever he wanted in.
Nice atmosphere, but definitely not busy. Even if it was Thursday night.
Unless they funnel profits from Gilly's (owned by the same people), I don't know if they'll be in the black. I'll give them a month if they aren't.

I'm not completely surprised at the "not guilty" verdict in the Hammond trial. I wasn't on the jury but just from the little bit that I heard from both sides it would probably be hard to find him guilty. I'm left with enough reasonable doubt that I don't know if I'd feel comfortable calling him "guilty" or not.
I was not shocked. Finding a jurist that claims to know little or nothing about a case is sort of like looking under a rock. I realize one has to find someone guilty beyond a reasonable doubt but there seemed to be too much evidence of suffocation and various healing stages of rib fractures. I wouldn't want to be Hammond's next baby girl.

Having experience encountering a street with cars on it will make you a well rounded person after you graduate.
Haha, you obviously know nothing about me. For one I figured that would spur discussion, but I also just think it's dumb that the same people continue to drive down University and get pissed off every day because they have to wait for pedestrians.
I definitely agree that many pedestrians are dumb, especially in the winter, but they do have the right of way. Closing the street down would alleviate problems on both sides.
For the sake of discussion, why do you think we should leave University open?
I went to the Level 10 on Thursday night as well, and as much as I also agree that the atmosphere and design could be "less lame", I have to say that I am very excited, that GF now has almost a classy place to go to, have a drink and a quiet conversation without breathing in the smoke. I did see people dressed appropriately, but I also saw coupls of girls wearing jeans and definatelly not a dressy top. Otherwise I though it was nice, their martini list is interesting, however they do not serve any food - I wish they at least served desserts.

People need to abide by the speed limits. Those of us who went to UND in the past didn't have the luxury of 20 mph speed limits, shuttles etc. We made it. And quite frankly, we made it without whining.
I would like to go back to the earlier discussion on Mama Maria's - I was there Friday night and I noticed the changes in the interior design - it is starting to look very nice. We picked up some dessert (which was delicious an is also home made, as I found out) and chatted with the very nice owner (or manager?). I am very impressed by the positive changes and will have to make a point to go there more often.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line and also it's a public street.

You make good points, when you aren't doling out ad hominems. From what GFG posted here, it doesn't look like any changes are in store for University. This is good and bad--as that suburb to the West grows, there will be increased traffic along that stretch of road. While the road won't become wider (making it harder to cross), it will become more full of cars ignoring the speed limit.
Since it seems like UND is not doing anything to really integrate themselves into the rest of Grand Forks, they might as well finish the process of segregating themselves right now instead of in the future, when the "whiners" will be those drivers who absolutely must drive down University.
Actually, I'd be happy for less traffic. Perhaps a UND campaign toward catching speeders and promoting the use of other nearby high-traffic roads.
By the way, the speed limit is 15 m.p.h. when those yellow lights are blinking.
An overpass from Demers (near the railroad credit union) to UND has been discussed (perhaps not recently) and would go a long way toward reducing Univ. Ave. traffic by providing students and commuters a back way into and out of UND, one that avoids most pedestrian traffic.
The proposed over pass mentioned was planned to connect Stanford Road with S. 34th Street south of Demers Ave. It will never happen for a few reasons. Obviously cost is the biggest but the second is because the University was not crazy about bringing that many cars into this area of the campus.
I'm the one who posted to matthew. I don't think suggesting you are whiny is attacking your motives or character. It just seems very unreasonable to ban traffic on University Avenue now that you are a student. Having the traffic go by elementary schools seems irresponsible and selfish. Crap-that was probably an ad hominem.

ReplyDeleteI see Dr. King, who is on South Washington. He's a traditional sort, but I've literally crawled in there with a muscle spasm and walked out feeling fine twenty minutes later. He's also the sort to do what needs to be done and tell you to watch it and come back if you need to -- not the "you'll need weekly appointments for life" approach.
It just occurs to me that I'm about the most contrary person on this blog... seems I argue with just about everyone. Sorry :-)

ReplyDeleteSorry, i can't recommend a chiropractor by name, but i can recomment the science in general. After many months of physical therapy from a sports injury, i decided to go to chiro as a 'last resort'. It shoud have been my first. Most traditional doctors are skeptical of non-traditional methods-whether it's nutrition, herbology or, in this case, chiropracty.

Has anyone else eaten at Mamma Maria's lately? What happened? We were there last Friday night and not a single customer in the place was happy. Some walked out because the food was taking so long, others (like us) said it was inedible and asked for a refund. Did they get new owners or something? If this keeps up I'm afraid they'll be closed in no time. This was the first time in my life I've found food absolutely inedible at a restaurant. Our pastas tasted like rotten fish!
ReplyDeleteI really like Dr. Thomson at Red River Family Chiropractic on Demers. He's very good plus he does not schedule frequent appointments like some chiro's do. He tells me to come in when I feel I need to and he can always get me in on the same day I call.

ReplyDeleteGetting pills for back pain isn't evidence-based. The research actually says giving pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxants for back pain has no effect vs. a placebo. There are good PT's and bad PT's just like everything else.

ReplyDeleteMy husband sees Dr. Shannon Ray in EGF for chiro care, and has nothing but good to say about him. His prices are also pretty reasonable and he takes a lot of different insurance plans.
ReplyDeleteFor a dentist, we see Dr. Brian Parr on South Washington and have for years. My kids like him and actually look forward to going to the dentist. I've also heard great things about Dr. Bridgford and Dr. Mosher (for kids).

If you are having muscle pain I would recommend Northern Lights Massage Therapy. It's not your typical "spa massage" experience...I really do consider it therapy. She will work out knots in your muscles you never even knew you had and you will walk out of there feeling like a million bucks!
On the dental front, I'd recommend Dr. John Baden, on South Washington (strip mall just south of Subway/Little Ceasars/TCBY.) Nice guy, great staff and, when I was looking for my daughter a long time ago, one of the few dentists in town taking new patients.

ReplyDeleteMcDonald on the east side is a great dentist. I've been to Jim (the dad) for years and years and Peter (one of his sons) for a couple of years. Both are great. A second son, Chris (I believe), has started as well.
My kids like Mosher but he's *expensive*. And when I saw him yesterday in the Porsche Carrera I knew why and decided it was time to take the kids to the east side :-).
I would definitely recommend Dr. O'Connell for a great dentist. He and his staff are wonderful!

I have to 4th that. However, do not go to the office between 1 PM and 2 PM because no one will help you. The staff takes its lunch break seriously! Anyway, Steve is great, and his staff of hygenists are great too. Almost look forward to going and getting my teeth cleaned!
Can anyone recommend a dentist that will take people with medicaid with no question and knows how to treat people with disablitys well? too many wonderful dentists in this town hate taking people with medicaid due to they arent paid as well I think. Any suggestions so I can stop driving ALL the way up to cavalier? BTW, Dr. Olson in cavalier is AWESOME. Its just hard sometimes when emergencys come up.

It ain't so. From what I understand, the J. Llyod Stone house (the "old" presidents residence) is going to be moved to a new location to make room for expansion of Gamble Hall. The current president's house (not a historical landmark)is to be torn down. Right now, the Alumni Ass. uses two buildings. The old J. Llyod Stone center, and across the street, the old (can't remember the name) religious center/church. The Alumni Association will build a new building for themselves, and as a part of the new building, the president's residence will be incorporated into it.
Subject to change of course as is just about everything on campus. This was the last I had heard at a meeting I was at for a particular campus dept. I work for that I would like to remain nameless.
The current president's house is a ranch style house built in the 50's...more Brady Bunch than historical landmark. You must have been thinking of the Alumni Center, which won't be torn down.

ReplyDeleteThe university built them a subway under Columbia at University. No one uses it. They prefer to cross on the red light when left turners have a green arrow. I guess the all come from towns that don't have stop lights.
Everywhere else on campus students can cross the street without looking or stopping for cars, and they aren't going to stop now.

As you might know local radio show host is covering for him, and making threats to UND for not giving info. Well call Bruning and ask him why he asked for "leave of absence" sound like AWOL. I've heard the "recycling rumor" stated as fact on Martha: Much of what we place in recycling bins never actually gets recycled because it would cost too much to transport it to the proper facilities, and it can often waste more petroleum transporting it than is wasted creating new plastic bottles. I wish I could remember the name of the guy's book because it seemed like an interesting read...Anyway, it's not just happening in GF; it happens everywhere.

UND does not have a security department, they have a police department (fully licensed ND officers), so it would definently be the UPD, not GFPD. By the way, UPD doesn't write any parking tickets, as that is a separate entity altogether (UND Traffic Division). The woman who was "mugged" supposedly was mugged on Sept. 7, and reported it on Sept. 18...something fishy there? And coffee guy, you have access to that case file to know that it was filed inactive? You must know that license tag # thing is true? remember, there is more than one side to every story. Maybe you should let some more facts come out before you berate your public safety officials.

ReplyDeleteI wonder what the quality control is on that project. With so many, what, hundreds of thousands of items to sort through, how particular can they be?
I don't know about you, but when they pick up my recycling, they sometimes leave items on the berm that can't be recycled but I've put in the bins. So if they do it curbside, I think they must do it at the center.
ReplyDeleteI expect that they do the recycling for free because they're making a bit of cash off of the monetarizable stuff like aluminum. Can't imagine that it would be profitable to just haul it all to the dump, but I imagine that there are loads of people who put junk out for the recyclers, and that does need to go off.
ReplyDeleteBut it's probably pretty easy to sort through a bunch of crap on a conveyer belt ("can", "bottle", "rat", "rat", "rat", "bottle") and just leave the "I don't know what that is" stuff to fall off the end into a dumpster. You'd probably pretty easily pick off 95% of the cans, bottles and plastic crap that can be recycled.
Isn't it New York City that requires everything either go in the garbage disposal (foodish things) or into recycling (cans, paper and the lot) and you can't have any "trash" at all (or small amounts)?
Interesting concept...not being allowed to have any "trash" at all. If I think about it, just about everything that I use is recyclable, except maybe the occasional styrofoam cup or meat tray. (Styrofoam can't be recycled, right?)

My husband and I recently started recycling most everything that we can, and I was amazed at how much our trash was reduced. We produced only 1 trash bag full of actual trash last week...very proud of ourselves!

Yes, I believe Coffee Guy was berating any officer involved in the investigation at UND. By calling any officer involved Barney Fife, they are eluding to the most incompetent example of a police officer that he could come up with. Most officers take extreme pride in their jobs and in their work. I personally don't know anything about this assault, as it was handled by an agency I don't work for. The legal system does not allow for us charging a vehicle owner just because we know a license plate of a person who was involved in the assault. The plate will give us little information other than who owns the car - it doesn't tell anything other than that, and it could be likely the car was stolen, plate given to police was innaccurate, or the suspect is unwilling to cooperate - making it difficult to prove a case. Maybe we should be talking to UND facilitites to have better surveillance of campus.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the accredidation has nothing to do with UND being a police department, it is more like a feather in the cap of a police department with a certain number of minorities represented and types of training and equipment. The listed vehicles are under an umbrella of the UND safety department, which both the traffic division and police department fall under. The police officers themselves are not responsible to write tickets, those are mostly student employees.
By the way, coffee guy - if Barney Fife were the worst thing I were called when I go to work at night I would be happy - so no, I don't really have thin skin...just suprised to hear that on this blog. Good questions, though.

ReplyDeleteI also thought that the letter in the Herald about downtown was a very worthwhile thing for the paper to run. It's very unfortunate to see the way some people treat the downtown area.
I fully realize that it is often the bars who are the only businesses that are actually bringing people downtown at times, but I don't think that this means that the bars or bar patrons have the right to trash downtown every weekend. I often see beer bottles and trash all over the street directly in front of some of the bars downtown. Shame on the owners who can't even bother to pick up the trash that their customers have left right in front of their bar. Perhaps the downtown bar owners would be interested in forming a cleanup group that would clean downtown after busy bars nights? I really doubt that would ever happen though.
When downtown looks dirty and sketchy, that is absolutely going to prevent more growth and redevelopment downtown.

ReplyDeleteWho do you recommend for eye care in Grand Forks? I'm noticing things are looking a little fuzzier than they did a year ago, and I'm not too fond of the last optimologist I saw. I need someone who is going to provide both a reasonably priced exam as well as reasonably priced contact lenses and eyewear.
I'm happy to hear about the success that the Canad Inn has been having in the last few months. Weren't their some readers of this blog who used to doubt that the Canad was going to be able to make a go of it? The parking lot is usually packed.
ReplyDeleteI really expect to see that second tower coming up in a couple of years. I still kind of wish that we could have had one 26-story tower instead of two 13-story towers. That would have been pretty sweet.
I'm also glad to see that the Canad finally found the time to plug in the sign at the entrance of the hotel. One of my bizarre obsessions lately is the fact that the Canad hasn't had any lit signs on the building...aren't those maple leaves and the signs for the restaurants going to be illuminated? And what about the water park...no sign for that yet. Odd things bother me.
lynsey - I recommend Opticare in East Grand Forks. Dr. Gander is very good and you can talk politics with him while getting your eyes checked!

I do the Farmers Market every Saturday morning and have woken up homeless, cleaned up enough vomit and beer bottles to feel sick myself and last Saturday mopped up urine on the stage. AND the Farmers Market pays the city for the privilege of holding the market on their property. Something needs to change...

I can't condone those whose limited imaginations can't allow them to pass up an opportunity to toss a can or smash a bottle, as if the experience sustains their state of virility. The only reasonable excuse for doing such a thing is if you're underage and you don't want to get caught with an open container when there's a police officer coming your way. Of course, if they're not quick enough, they'll get caught for littering and open container, and minor in consumption if their luck has really run out.
For eye care in Grand Forks, I highly recommend Lifetime Vision Center out by the mall... I have gone to Dr. Yunker for years and Dr. Torkelson is good too... They have a great facility with top of the line eqipment and eyewear. Always quick, easy and personable.

ReplyDeleteI also think Opticare in East Grand Forks is great. I've gone there for a couple years and they've always treated me well. Last time I was there to pick out new glasses the people who helped me were great & I felt gave me an honest opinion about what looked good and what didn't. They also called me a couple weeks after I got me new glasses just to make sure they were working out.
ReplyDeleteI went to Level 10 Martini Bar downtown this evening after hearing about its grand opening last week.

I think I was more pissed that I heard there was a dress code there and that they turned away people who wore jeans (even though, I disagree with that depending on the jeans). So, when I saw people walking in like they lived in the Mission, I was ready to go.
The dress code there is similar to Subway.
I'm thinking they didn't do great last week because of turning away people that they said "screw it" and Gilly let whoever he wanted in.
Nice atmosphere, but definitely not busy. Even if it was Thursday night.
Unless they funnel profits from Gilly's (owned by the same people), I don't know if they'll be in the black. I'll give them a month if they aren't.
Ah, The Herald and their 3rd grade politics. So ridiculous. Try fing the Canad article from yesterday, on-line. It has disappeared. Why can't it be found? All I wanted to do was check the article's comments. You can't find it with the search function.

I have to say that I'm quite shocked that the jury came back this afternoon with a "not guilty" verdict in the Hammond case.

I'm not completely surprised at the "not guilty" verdict in the Hammond trial. I wasn't on the jury but just from the little bit that I heard from both sides it would probably be hard to find him guilty. I'm left with enough reasonable doubt that I don't know if I'd feel comfortable calling him "guilty" or not.
ReplyDeleteI was not shocked. Finding a jurist that claims to know little or nothing about a case is sort of like looking under a rock. I realize one has to find someone guilty beyond a reasonable doubt but there seemed to be too much evidence of suffocation and various healing stages of rib fractures. I wouldn't want to be Hammond's next baby girl.

Haha, you obviously know nothing about me. For one I figured that would spur discussion, but I also just think it's dumb that the same people continue to drive down University and get pissed off every day because they have to wait for pedestrians.
I definitely agree that many pedestrians are dumb, especially in the winter, but they do have the right of way. Closing the street down would alleviate problems on both sides.
For the sake of discussion, why do you think we should leave University open?

Campus Dakota - for North Dakota college students
I went to the Level 10 on Thursday night as well, and as much as I also agree that the atmosphere and design could be "less lame", I have to say that I am very excited, that GF now has almost a classy place to go to, have a drink and a quiet conversation without breathing in the smoke. I did see people dressed appropriately, but I also saw coupls of girls wearing jeans and definatelly not a dressy top. Otherwise I though it was nice, their martini list is interesting, however they do not serve any food - I wish they at least served desserts.

matthew...So you would propose the east west traffic go where? Down 5th Avenue where there is a school, headstart and day care? University Avenue is a busy street. People need to abide by the speed limits. Those of us who went to UND in the past didn't have the luxury of 20 mph speed limits, shuttles etc. We made it. And quite frankly, we made it without whining.
ReplyDeleteI would like to go back to the earlier discussion on Mama Maria's - I was there Friday night and I noticed the changes in the interior design - it is starting to look very nice. We picked up some dessert (which was delicious an is also home made, as I found out) and chatted with the very nice owner (or manager?). I am very impressed by the positive changes and will have to make a point to go there more often.

If you have to stop every 5 feet to let someone cross, is that helping you get to your destination quicker? Is it improving your gas mileage to drive this way?

You make good points, when you aren't doling out ad hominems. From what GFG posted here, it doesn't look like any changes are in store for University. This is good and bad--as that suburb to the West grows, there will be increased traffic along that stretch of road. While the road won't become wider (making it harder to cross), it will become more full of cars ignoring the speed limit.
Since it seems like UND is not doing anything to really integrate themselves into the rest of Grand Forks, they might as well finish the process of segregating themselves right now instead of in the future, when the "whiners" will be those drivers who absolutely must drive down University.
Actually, I'd be happy for less traffic. Perhaps a UND campaign toward catching speeders and promoting the use of other nearby high-traffic roads.
By the way, the speed limit is 15 m.p.h. when those yellow lights are blinking.

Campus Dakota - a place for North Dakota college students.
An overpass from Demers (near the railroad credit union) to UND has been discussed (perhaps not recently) and would go a long way toward reducing Univ. Ave. traffic by providing students and commuters a back way into and out of UND, one that avoids most pedestrian traffic.

ReplyDeleteI don't believe there are designated crosswalks every 5 feet. If pedestrians and drivers both went by the book I believe there would be less problems.
The proposed over pass mentioned was planned to connect Stanford Road with S. 34th Street south of Demers Ave. It will never happen for a few reasons. Obviously cost is the biggest but the second is because the University was not crazy about bringing that many cars into this area of the campus.

It just seems very unreasonable to ban traffic on University Avenue now that you are a student. Having the traffic go by elementary schools seems irresponsible and selfish.
