Open Thread #42

I think it's time to start a new open thread when the last one has over 100 comments...and yes, that is a new record.

42 comments:

  1. What's with the urge of passing motorists in GF to yell random stuff at you while you are out working on the lawn, biking, running, etc.?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Hmm. Could be you need to dress more modestly?

Or maybe they're just being neighborly. *s*

  3. What's up with people parking their cars on their lawns? There is a city ordinance against it. I'm seeing more and more if this in what used to be very nice, tidy neighborhoods. Now they're starting to resemble dumpy, used car lots.

  4. I was just out having lunch with a friend of mine today and we were lamenting the lack of a good soup/salad bar. It seems that all the good salad bars are drying up. There used to be a killer salad bar at the World Market in the UND Student Union...gone, replace with fast food style Mexican food. Hugo's on the East side used to have a great salad bar with lots of topping options and three different kinds of greens. (iceberg lettuce = blech) I'm thinking of something along the lines of a Ruby Tuesday's salad bar with a soup/breadstick or baked potato option, but without the rest of the menu and a bit more along the lines of how the Royal Fork used to be where you get a tray, take a plate or a box if it's "to go" follow the line and make your salad, optional baked potato and soup bar at the end and cashiers at the end weighing the salad and adding on the soup or whatever as needed. Quick. Fresh. Potentially pretty healthy for you.

  5. I yell at people who are being idiots and riding their bicycles on the wrong side of the road. If you don't like it, maybe you should pay attention to following the traffic rules.

I would have ranted about drivers on this side of the state earlier, but they just wore me out.

Just for the record, the bells downtown every hour are still pissing me off. If anyone who has control of them reads this blog, PLEASE shut the stupid things off!

  6. bad Monday, matthew?

    ReplyDelete
  7. do you yell at bad drivers too?

  8. Souper Salad...ever heard of it? It's a chain buffet restaurant that only serves a concoction of soups, a very extensive salad bar, bread, and dessert. It's pretty good if that's your sort of thing.

    ReplyDelete
  9. FYI, there are rumors of a new soup/salad bar type of chain restaurant coming to one of GF's new strip malls. I'll let you know if I hear anything further about this.

  10. BTW, today is Christine Reid's last day at WDAZ.

    ReplyDelete
  11. What's up with people letting their dogs out without a leash and supervision? Almost every time I walk my dog we get "harassed" by ownerless dogs!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Christine Reid is out too? Why is WDAZ a revolving door? I realize it's a stepping stone to bigger and better things, but it seems that reporters are leaving the industry, not just leaving for a bigger market.

  13. I have a little tip for everyone. This is a fact also. Hooters is coming to town. I actually dont know the location right now. But, if you call the GF builders association I am sure they will tell you.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Like we need more boobs than we have already.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I thought Tavern United was filling the Hooters void nicely in GF.

    ReplyDelete
  16. personally, I think it's safer for me as a driver to see the biker on the wrong side of the road and vice versa. besides, it's not that big of a deal unless the biker is not off to the side of the road.

  17. I agree with the dogs and no leash thing. We used to live by neighbors that let their 2 labs out all by themselves to run around the neighborhood. They were not friendly dogs & would "trot" after you and bark. Several times I would try to go out my front door and they would both be sitting there. I called the cops on them 3 times & was told that the cops knew about them & they would WARN the owners again. I wonder how many times they gave the owners a warning. I don't know if the cops ever did anything more than warn them, but nothing worked.

  18. Hooters. Sa-weet. That's what we've been missing.

What the hell is going on here? This market cannot possibly handle this many restaurants - chains or not.

Unless, of course, they can stay alive on the weekend Canadian/out-of-town traffic alone.

Sucks to be off the beaten path, that's for sure.

  19. In response to Anon, I had a long drive across the state and didn't eat all day, so it was not the greatest of days. I also yell at bad drivers--they can only hear me when I'm on my bicycle though, because usually I am swearing through the windows when I'm in the car.

  20. "I have a little tip for everyone. This is a fact also. Hooters is coming to town. I actually dont know the location right now. But, if you call the GF builders association I am sure they will tell you."

Anonymous is correct...a new Hooters is currently listed on the Grand Forks Builders and Traders Exchange. However, there is the slight chance that they are advertising for bids for the new Fargo location because a new location there was recently announced. However, it seems much more likely that we're talking about a brand new GF location here. I'll have to see what I can find out.

  21. Hooters is a sweet bar. I can't wait great

    ReplyDelete
  22. Great, another white trash establishment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My boyfriend and I go to Hooter's every now and then. Every time I've gone we've loved the food & have never had a crappy waitress.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What and where is the Tavern United? I might have to go check that place out.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tavern United is in the Canad Inn.

    ReplyDelete
  26. People in the area probably think Canad Inns isn't open yet. It's open and has been for months. Their Grand Opening is this month and should open lights to the people of the area and advertising should be started as far as I know.

As for Hooters. It's amazing if they choose to build a Grand Forks location and being close to Fargo. I just read up on their site and they apparently require 100,000-150,000 people within a 5 mile radius. Grand Forks-EGF and surrounding probably makes up around 70,000 because Thompson/Manvel are not in the 5 mile radius.

    ReplyDelete
  27. What restaurant would require a 5 miles radius? That's lame. I live in EGF and work on 32nd avenue, so I travel 8 miles to work. If 5 miles is true, that doesn't even encompass the radius of GF-EGF.

  28. So, is it safe to assume that the Boyd Drive Follies, CulturePulse, GF Teenview, GGFYP, and My Grand Forks blogs have all joined Voice of Dakota in the Grand Forks Blogosphere graveyard? Am I the only one who is left wondering why nobody can ever stick with anything that they start? The once burgeoning local blogging community now consists of me, Tuey, Tom Dennis, and Terry Dullum.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Dedication and hard work makes the cream rise to the top, GFG. The four of you are doing just fine. And might we add MattFacingSouth's blog to your list, too? That also fills a void.

Maintaining a blog has to take a committment of time, to be sure, something some likely don't realize when they start one up. Not everyone is cut out to lead, yet they can still make valuable contributions by offering their views in others' blogs.

My appreciation to you---and Tyuen, Tom Dennis, and Terry Dullum for continuing to offer an intellectual view on a wonderful area.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agree with Charlie. This blog is the #1 blog in GF. I read it everyday to see what's new.

The Canad has its grand opening a week from today (Sept. 20). If I were you, I'd check out Tavern United. The girls are pretty and the drinks are cheap. Last friday I hit up 1.50 domestic bottle night.

  31. That's a fresh concept. Cheap booze in a college market. My congrats to the marketing/concept genius that came up with that.

  33. Why would it matter how many people are in a certain radius, blah blah blah. Applebee's is everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Applebee's, like flyshit, is everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Does anyone know what is going up next to the Hilton Garden Inn on 42nd Street and what is being built to the west of Wendy's on 32nd Ave.???

    ReplyDelete
  36. Dennys on 32nd next to Wendys

    ReplyDelete
  37. Next to the hilton is UND's COLESAT, the first building in a research and tech park located next to the hilton.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Does anyone know of a shop in Grand Forks (besides the obvious Scheels) that carries sports memorabilia? A store that has unique baseball cards or other interesting items?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Barnes and Noble and Ralph Engelstad Areana's shop both have Sioux memorabilia

    ReplyDelete
  40. There's a comic book shop in the Grand Cities mall that probably carries baseball cards in some quantity. Some general merchandisers (I know that Kmart did, at one time,) carry cards by the case, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Barry's Collector's Corner in the South Forks Plaza has tons of stuff, including baseball, hockey, football cards, etc. Also figurines, comic books, record albums, you name it. Cool store.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks guys! I will have to check them out!
