Golden Corral coming to Grand Forks

I love finding out what businesses are coming to Grand Forks before others do and I think I've done it again. Golden Corral, a large national chain of buffet-style restaurants, appears to be planning a restaurant in Grand Forks as well as a location in Bismarck. We can always use more restaurants, in my opinion. As it is, the Royal Fork is the only buffet-style restaurant in Grand Forks. The way I see it, competition is a good thing. I look forward to another addition to the local restaurant lineup.

Update - 4/18/2006
Does the Grand Forks Herald read Grand Forks Life? You tell me. It sounds like this restaurant will be a part of the new Kohl's development on 32nd Avenue South. Watch for more stores and restaurants to announce plans pertaining to that same development soon.

So what are the Panda, Buffet House, etc. or don't the Chinese buffet's count.

:-)

Anonymous, I thought about that after I posted the story. I guess those places are in a different category to me. There are "regular" buffets and then there are Chinese buffets. I love both kinds...I'm an equal opportunity eater.

Totally off topic reply:

What goes on in Grand Forks on the 4th of July? My girlfriend and I are planning on driving out there that week before we hit Minnesota and Iowa and head back out West.

For years, the local Sertoma chapter has sponsored a giant fireworks show on the evening of July 4th. It has been located in many different locations throughout the city over time, but its most recent home has been the Greenway between GF and EGF. They shoot the fireworks off from near the Point Bridge and they are visible throughout downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Also, there are lots of activities for kids, food vendors, and music throughout the day in the downtown area. If I remember correctly, there is usually a street dance. Its not the biggest July 4th celebration around, but (from what I've heard) it is quite good compared to cities of comparable size in the region.

Yes, reporters read blogs, too. Thanks for the tip. Better from you than from the Enemy at WDAZ. Those guys are insufferable when they get a scoop.

LOL, you made my day with that comment, Tu-Uyen. For those of you who don't know, Tu-Uyen Tran is a writer for the Herald. I find it pretty cool that my blog caught the "scoop" before the Herald or WDAZ did! :)

I've never understood why there is so much animosity between you guys and WDAZ...

I think everybody is forgetting about Ponderosa. This sounds a lot like Ponderosa...lets just hope they can put together better food!

Hey grandforksguy, there really ISN'T animosity between us and WDAZ. We love them like brothers and sisters. One of us, is even getting hitched with one of them (not me).

That doesn't stop them from rubbing it in when, once in a blue moon, they do get a scoop.

Anyway, they are the closest competitor so we have to take them seriously. I do anyway. In bigger cities, newspapers compete with newspapers and ignore TV. But we're a pretty small market. The hardest lump to take is when one of your loyal readers ask: "I saw it on DAZ. How come it wasn't in The Herald?"

Oh god. The Ponderosa is awful. Worst food ever. That food hut in the airport has better food. :-P Actually, gnawing on part of an aircraft might be tastier than the food at the Ponderosa!

The 4th of July thing sounds fine to me. As long as I can get some bbq ribs and a beer, I'll be happy. :-D

Tu-Uyen, you said "We love them like brothers and sisters. One of us, is even getting hitched with one of them (not me)." So is that more like Arkansas brothers and sisters since their is a marriage.

I highly doubt Tu-Uyen would post on this blog and leave his name. Probably just another anonymous poster.

Props to Tu-Uyen, a good guy, who along with elisa rinehart is probably one of the two best reporters in town. Tu-Uyen is one of the few who is actually proactive and bothers turning over a few rocks to uncover stories. He keeps his ear to the ground and does good work without whining about "budget cuts" or "low pay," neither of which is a good excuse to suck.

No offense intended, but WDAZ, in general, offers horrible reporting. Its unfathomable how they can pay people to spend time shooting in the field only to see them rehash a press release and cut an hour of potential footage down to a 3-second meaningless quote that adds absolutely nothing to the story. The pay over there may be low, but management is getting even less than $7/hour for their investment. Cut out the lame WDAY fluff stories, and give your people more time to shine with some local content that we can't get from other sources.

To anonymous and anonymous and anonymous:
No really, it's me. There's at least two other reporters I know that troll the blogs. I just feel I should identify myself.
Also, I appreciate the "attaboy." It's always good to hear that sort of thing from a reader and not a source. Rineheart will appreciate the kind words, too, as soon as I get over to her desk.
In defense of WDAZ, I know how hard those guys work with the limited resources they have. Many of their reporters are youngins with a lot less experience than most of us at the Herald. When I was at the one year and two year mark, I was a doofus. (I'm at six years now.) I'm not sure I could have done better.
Plus, in the TV business, it seems you're more liable to get show horses than in newspapers and those guys always have to be weeded out.

Tu-Uyen

P.S. Maybe I should have said that "I love them like brothers and sisters." The one that's getting hitched obviously is doing a different kind of lovin'.

This thread sure covered more ground than a new restaurant coming to town. . .:-)

Actually Grand Forks wouldn't know an investigative reporter (paper, TV, radio, etc) if one came up and slapped their face.

This is a small town, everyone worries about advertising $$$$$$$.

Remember Scott Hennen?? To quote someone else, "Hennen would defend the city of Grand Forks if it bombed an orphanage."

I think KNOX Radio is almost on the cutting edge in asking the questions some of their people ask on the air. I've talked personally with one of them and was told it can get a little hairy at times. Look at Voice of Dakota getting a visit from Mayor Brown's attorney. Where were other investigative reporters? It should have been a front page story. "Mayor Brown intimidates" Whoops, cant' do that, Altru et al advertises with us.

Anonymous said...

First off, advertisers do not, as a matter of principle, intimidate reporters. Ask our ad reps. They have to deal with angry customers.

I can never understand why people leap to the conclusion that there's a conspiracy when stupidity and ignorance are perfectly good explanations.

I didn't look into this because I didn't know about it. Too busy with stuff that affects more people than one radio host -- like the elections and property taxes.

Anyway, the only reason I can think of for sicking the attorneys on a media person is if there's a possibility of slander (the spoken version of libel). If KNOX thinks it has a good case, more than likely the mayor will have to back off. Advertising's got nothing to do with it.

Keep up the good work. Don't let uninformed idiots get in the way.

Didn't Hal Gershman refuse to advertise inthe GF Herald after someone told him to "Shut up" on a radio program??

Grand Forks 4th sucks! If your a little kid it would be fun but come on, looking at fire works over the bridge? I was so glad that we moved away from GF. The town is so boring!

Just saw the comment about Hal. Um, I wasn't here for that, but I understand ad-pulling has happened in the past. In the newsroom, we usually hear about it indirectly from hearsay rather than from our supervisors. So, that sort of tactic tends not to put any pressure on the offending reporter. Not unless the reporter had truly screwed up, factually or ethically. But we get in trouble for screwing up rather than for lost ad revenue.

I saw that the band 32 Below is going to be playing here on the night of the 4th. They always put on a great show.... So there will definately be something to do that night here.
